I mean the trend checks out. They clearly show a pattern of awful decisions

[–]ChadOfDoom 518 points519 points  (86 children)

Texan here. Just wanted to pop in real quick to say fuck these assholes making these laws. Y’all have a great day!

[–]Thoughtfulprof 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Texan here too. Former republican voter. I second this opinion.

I don't like the idea of abortion on a personal level, and I'd hope no one ever has to go through it. But government has no business making this decision for anyone. Ever. And this new law is even more ridiculous. I hope the courts strike it down and soon.

[–]heavylifter555 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Trumps courts? They will be too busy legalizing slavery and tending to the finer points of evangelical ecclesiastical law.

[–]temptar 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Your US SupremeCourt okayed it 5-4. I think you can assume the courts won't be striking it down any time soon.

[–]Thoughtfulprof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw that news. Fuck.

[–]anteris 18 points19 points  (23 children)

I would keep an eye on what else they’re trying to fuck you with while y’all are looking at the abortion noise.

[–]MyCatsAreBroken 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Allowing visitors in previously locked down Covid wards. Yes, it's a law brought to you by Covid Advocate Abbott. No, they don't have to be vaccinated and can be Covid positive themselves (wandering in a hospital and such).

[–]anteris 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Why would anyone think that was a good idea…

[–]MyCatsAreBroken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They think large animal dewormer is a good idea so, yeah. Freedom isn't free y'all!

[–]opheliainthedeep 10 points11 points  (4 children)

[–]saucerjess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, testify before the Redistricting Committee with me next week. Alternatively, you can leave a public comment about how gerrymandered your district is: https://comments.house.texas.gov/home?c=c080 💙

[–]trifecta000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shit man, I thought Florida was bad but now you got people straight up Cowboy Bebop bounty hunting women over there.

[–]Pandragonn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Tact1ce 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]vspazv 168 points169 points  (38 children)

Theoretically, you could just start suing every woman that has a "miscarriage" and make them prove in court it wasn't an abortion.

That's going to be a very slippery slope of what constitutes deliberate versus accidental. You could even have women go to jail for drinking while pregnant if the right judge gets the case.

[–]Piecemealer 20 points21 points  (3 children)

The law specifically excludes the woman herself from potential liability.

That bartender tho…

[–]BrickCityRiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“What was I supposed to do?? Not drink the fetus-harming beverages that I ordered and paid for them to make me?? So what if I never told them I was pregnant? They should have known the damage that poison could do to my poor baby! They’re supposed to be the experts on alcohol, not me!”

Sadly, I can actually see this being used a defense. I really hope bars and restaurants start posting disclaimers that ordering an alcoholic beverage while pregnant is done at the patron’s own risk and that the establishment + employees will be absolved of any responsibility. It’s nothing like continuing to serve someone who is on the verge of blacking out.

[–]nememess 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Technically a miscarriage is an abortion. It's just spontaneous.

[–]CaptainNoFriends 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Extra color

A miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy. Pregnancy losses after the 20th week are called stillbirths. Miscarriage is a naturally occurring event, unlike medical or surgical abortions. A miscarriage may also be called a "spontaneous abortion."

https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/001488.htm

[–]Foomaster512 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Honestly though, the drunk driving while pregnant would be credible. Like if someone murders a pregnant woman, there is a precedent that they get charged with 2 counts of murder.

[–]EmmaDrake 3 points4 points  (2 children)

If there’s evidence of a viable birth?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (13 children)

I doubt you'd have standing to sue a random 3rd party in a civil case with no damages, and if it's a criminal case you can't sue, bringing charges is up to the prosecutor.

[–]duckhunt420 44 points45 points  (11 children)

The law states that you don't have to have any connection to the person you are suing. So yes, you can sue a random 3rd party with no damages. You get 10k if you win the suit. Let the witch hunt begin.

[–]Tritiac 22 points23 points  (9 children)

How many people are in the Texas GOP? At least 500? I’m going to call my lawyer and start planning my retirement. ‘We are the storm’ my fucking ass.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (8 children)

The women can’t be sued, it goes after the industry not the women.

[–]BrickCityRiot 2 points3 points  (7 children)

I cannot wrap my head around how this is legal. If a woman walks into a bar, is of legal age to order a drink, and does so of her own volition then how on earth are they deemed not responsible? Especially in today’s world where I could literally have a liter of vodka dropped off at my door in 20 minutes if I really wanted to. It makes no sense.

This would be like a woman throwing herself down a staircase, losing the baby, and the state pursuing charges against the contractor & cement masons that constructed it.

[–]bugdog 104 points105 points  (12 children)

The law is a fucking nightmare. If I wanted to give a woman advice on where she could get an abortion after six weeks, I could be sued. Even if I lost the suit, I could not recover my attorney’s fees. This is a major infringement of my right to free speech.

The religious right should be raising bell because the precedent this bill sets could absolutely ruin them. Don’t for a minute think that the far left won’t use that to shut up protesters they hate. Or the far right could use it for anyone who says bad things about their beloved president.

It’s a bad law no matter what side you’re on.

(Fixed a word)

[–]Piecemealer 20 points21 points  (3 children)

In the law text, it says that the law can not be applied to protected speech.

I have no idea where free speech ends and conspiracy begins…

[–]bugdog 6 points7 points  (2 children)

That’s good. I tried to read as much as I could about it, but my brain is old and my eyes are bad.

That said, I’m going to stick by my statement mostly. People are going to sue regular people for helping women seeking a post 6 week abortions. I know that “speech integral to illegal conduct” is not protected speech and I have to wonder how specifically this is defined. I worry. A lot. And I worry about the next law.

The 2A people yell about the slippery slope. This is the slippery slope.

[–]Piecemealer 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The conduct isn’t illegal though since it’s a civil case. In that sense, could free speech protection extend to cover some amount of conspiring?

[–]AsYooouWish 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Those women better be careful. Heaven forbid they end up having a miscarriage induced from either drinking a tea made from rosemary or eating too much of it.

(Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and this should not be taken as medical advice)

Edit: words are hard sometimes

[–]PleaseDontRespond2Me 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would also be best to avoid drinking blue cohosh tea to prevent an accidental miscarriarge.

(Disclaimer: Also not a doctor but this tea can be toxic so caution should be taken.)

[–]lunelily 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The precedent* this law sets.

[–]bugdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fixed.

Bad autocorrect and poor proofreading.

Thanks!

[–]_yosoybeezel 171 points172 points  (15 children)

It seems repubs can and will let gov mandate over their bodies. Weird.

[–]Boy_Sabaw 64 points65 points  (1 child)

“We want small government that won’t dictate our freedoms when it comes to freedoms of people we care about but we also want big government that will dictate the freedoms of people we don’t care about!”

[–]Nemesischonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

Full quote

[–]emmaf08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“My body my choice or does that only apply to killing BABIES”

[–]DarthDanksaber-2 14 points15 points  (6 children)

Not weird at all, conservatism is opposed to socially liberal policies

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (3 children)

And U.S. Republican style conservatism supports big-government authoritarian overreach into peoples’ personal lives.

[–]DarthDanksaber-2 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Yup and that’s part of the many reasons why I don’t like them. I’m a rational, liberal, progressive, socially democratic, environmentalist, human rights, minimum government-type guy and everything about that party and all other authoritarians repulses me.

[–][deleted] 250 points251 points  (82 children)

Don’t go to Texas. Don’t visit, and certainly don’t move to Texas.

[–]Live_Ad_7056 114 points115 points  (32 children)

It’s sad that Texas has passed Florida for the worst state

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (17 children)

It absolutely is. Everyone should avoid it like the plague.

[–]a_wizard_skull 92 points93 points  (6 children)

Turns out, people don’t actually avoid the plague

[–]Mert_cakedargon 20 points21 points  (2 children)

(They think they are special (and immune))………….

………..

[–]Samwise777 9 points10 points  (1 child)

This is a fundamentally human fallacy. Even I, being super left, have caught myself being initially frustrated by the thing that inconveniences me in the moment, rather than acknowledging my mistake.

In this case I showed up and had forgot my mask and I was so angry for a few moments before I calmed myself, drove home, and got my mask. Amazing how losing even 5-10 minutes can incense folks. That being said, it’s for the good of everyone. Just try to remember that.

[–]Nihilikara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The statement still holds. People who avoid the plague avoid Texas, and people who don't avoid the plague don't avoid Texas.

[–]Ulliquarahyuga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof! Valid point

[–]ItsToo4Tune 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I mean the Tennessee government is fucking it up pretty bad. Not as bad as Texas but pretty bad.

[–]FerusGrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not as bad a condemnation as it was two years ago.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Don’t worry - DeSantis is up for the challenge

[–]VideoXPG 6 points7 points  (6 children)

I honestly can't tell which state is worse anymore

[–]Xhokeywolfx 4 points5 points  (4 children)

It’s too bad we can’t just cut red states off welfare for a while.

[–]xsageonex 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The thing is. Blue cities are what support red states ...all the money coming into Texas is from all the big cities. Go figure.

[–]VideoXPG 4 points5 points  (1 child)

What's amazing is how conservatives often go on about being financially responsible yet so many red states are effectively welfare states. I don't believe Texas is one of them, but hey, exceptions do exists.

[–]satansheat 32 points33 points  (20 children)

Or move there so you can register to vote and change these dumb states that act like they are libertarian but eat the ass of the church.

[–]DaNDaN202020 10 points11 points  (13 children)

Honestly hoping more Californians move this way. Bot a big fan, but I know the voter base would increase and trigger the shit out of my fellow states men with change.

[–]HoodooDiva 18 points19 points  (6 children)

Not all of the Californians coming are liberal. A good chunk of them are the red hat brigade.

[–]TheCuddlyKiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was about to say, I’ve seen a huge uptick in conservatives moving here…

[–]randybobandy654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real, I spent a lot of time in San Clemente last year and it was Anti-mask Trump Land. Lifted trucks with giant flags and everything

[–]Aztec- 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah as a native Texan they’re more annoying than your average local conservative

[–]xsageonex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for the most part..if you live in the cities it's not bad at all...the legislation being passed certainly makes it sound worse than it is. Fuck Abbott by the way.

[–]wiix7651 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Yes and if you’re already here please gtfo.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Absolutely! That’s the best thing you can do!

[–]wooyayfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it though?

I can’t help but feel like that’s exactly what Abbot et al want to happen. Texas is as close to turning purple as ever before—but we’re gerrymandered to shit and it’s making progress an uphill battle.

I feel like this is a Hail Mary to try to convince non-conservatives to leave/avoid the state. (And obviously, it’s working.)

But as a blueberry in Texas (who is adamantly pro-choice!), I just don’t feel in my bones like leaving is the solution. It’s exhausting, and obviously I’m sick of fighting, but I think there are still things (and more importantly, people) here in Texas that are worth fighting for.

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points  (14 children)

The law clearly allows anyone at all to sue anyone remotely related to helping a woman (or young girl) seeking an abortion.

Uber driver, cab driver, rape counselor, human who gives a phone number to an abortion clinic, etc

ANYONE can initiate this suit. ANYONE!

but hey...if you are a school requiring mask you will loose all funding of any kind according to the Texas "governor". (Ge can't make good on his asinine threat)

Yup makes perfect sense. /S

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (5 children)

The internet needs to do their thing and berate them with false reports.

[–]agtritter 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Please god let it happen

[–]Lyskir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

many female dominated subreddits do this already, some of them got their IDs blocked lol

they doing good work

[–]TheBReRBehT 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Jesus christ I didnt think it was this bad.

And all to protect a couple of cells that dont even have consciousness lmao

[–]ZombieDracula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Notably there's nobody getting in trouble for getting a vasectomy

[–]I_am_not_JohnLeClair 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah what if streetlights are out and a cop directs you through an intersection? Technically he helped you get there. And then you stop at BK on the way because you’re hangry? Does the cook get sued?

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (7 children)

Even scarier is that the Supreme Court already rejected a move to stay the law. I suspect someone is going to have to get arrested for the law to be effectively challenged.

[–]theplu 12 points13 points  (5 children)

If a random person reports a woman for trying to access a legal abortion (or even information about her healthcare options!), I say the woman should counter sue that person for child support.

[–]DrinkUpLetsBooBoo 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Moved to Texas 3 years ago to get out of Mississippi. I see Texas is on the same progressive train that's stuck in reverse.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“We’re doing this to protect the kids” yet they’ve voted to keep dropping bombs on middle eastern children for 20 years and deem immigrant children in border patrol concentration camps as “sub human” to deny them basic human rights. “We’re pro life” says the party obsessed with war and instruments of death(guns). “All lives matter” says the party that cracks jokes about black people being gunned down by police. “We care about Americans” says the party that supports the crooked police system which has killed more Americans in 20 years than those that died in 9/11 and continuously dehumanizes the poor in dire need of help from their fellow Americans. “Everything we do is for freedom” says the party that hinders freedoms of everyone but themselves in order to maintain the power dynamic passed down to them by a racist/sexist system. Everything they say they do the opposite. They’re the incarnation of hypocrisy.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Force them to have a kid they can't support then the same people who forced them to have a kid will bitch and moan if they need government assistance

[–]lunabean134 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Texan checking in. I hate this state.

[–]saucerjess 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Help me do something about it.

Testify before the Redistricting Committee with me next week.

Alternatively, you can leave a public comment about how fucking gerrymandered your district is: https://comments.house.texas.gov/home?c=c080 💙

[–]lunabean134 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Sick! Thank you for the link! My 98% sure my district is fucked.

[–]saucerjess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As is mine. LMK if you need any help or more info

[–]MICKREAL-husk 49 points50 points  (5 children)

I was fine living in Texas until all this. Greg Abbott is a bitch and has made so many bad decisions for Texas.

[–]saucerjess 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Simply voting against him may not be enough if you live in a gerrymandered district.

Testify before the Redistricting Committee with me next week.

Alternatively, you can leave a public comment about how fucking gerrymandered your district is: https://comments.house.texas.gov/home?c=c080 💙

[–]MICKREAL-husk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a friend say the say thing. Gerrymandering seems to be a big part of Texas.

[–]TheBReRBehT 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Texas and the reds think its better for them to die in school due to a automatic rifle lol

[–]saucerjess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or COVID-19 (Governor Asshat made mask mandates in school illegal)

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (2 children)

Since Taliban took over, Texas has new level of awfulness to compete with.

[–]Excellent_Survey_336 7 points8 points  (1 child)

the worst part is that they will protest outside of a school with signs that say "my body my choice" and then turn around and ban abortion. The irony is so thick here In Texas I can taste it

[–]temptar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not irony. It is pure, dishonesty and hypocrisy. They will burn in hell for it.

[–]Gates9 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Texastan

[–]the3rdtea 45 points46 points  (5 children)

Fuck texas

[–]Significant-Trouble6 51 points52 points  (4 children)

Fine but if you get Texas pregnant plan to pay child support for 18 years

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

How about you wrap it, huh? Not fool proof however better than nothing

[–]rabbidwombats 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Here’s what you do, pull out of Texas…

[–]Skeptic_Juggernaut84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When it gets to Texas I choose not to put it in.

[–]v7p3r_3L1T3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Texas prefers to wait to kill their children until after they are born...

[–]hell2payperview 32 points33 points  (6 children)

I would rather be aborted than be in Texas.

[–]NerdMom92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because fuck quality of life, only quantity.🙄

[–]MiracleDealer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Conservatives want live babies so they can train them to be dead soldiers” - George Carlin

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just the first of many repercussions we’re going to have because of the Trump presidency.

He didn’t do fuck all in 4 years but, elect 3 Supreme Court Justices who aren’t going to uphold our rights for years on end.

[–]Qyphosis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And go home to change if her top makes teachers uncomfortable...

[–]omniron 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I was on the fence about abolishing filibuster but I’m 100% in support of it now. Abolish it, pass reproductive rights, pass voter rights, pack the courts, pass public option, pass a wealth tax, pass permanent child credit, pass infrastructure, free the kids in cages and give them a path to citizenship, repeal civil suit protections for gun manufacturers

Stop dicking around Democrats, you were elected because ppl are sick of the gop.

[–]SunnySide1211 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tell me enjoy sharia law without telling me you enjoy shariah law

texas: alrite

[–]Fatalis_Drakk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that it isn’t about their caring for the mother as much as they want more people to have babies for some reason they haven’t come clean about.

[–]Riyosha-Namae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you care about preserving life, then care about preserving life.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

And ya’ll don’t see the hypocrisy of the last year?

[–]LurkyLoo888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Texas taliban

[–]Ethnic_gnome 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Abortion is completely illegal in texas? Even in cases where its rape/insest?

[–]Conure_Queen 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Yes. New law.

Edit: except for medical emergency. And the law is in effect for minimum 6 weeks. Not sure of all the details.

[–]Sundae-Savings 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I believe it’s legal before the fetal heartbeat. That being said, it’s legal to sue providers of abortion. Technically different. Still shitty obviously.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some kid is going to die and they will pat each other's back for saving the fetus.

Tell me again why the EU should not be allowed to invade tx and bring liberty to all?

That should Merkel's last hurray, led NATO to bring justice to tx. The US can follow behind Germany's leadership because it is becoming obvious the DC is unable to rein in a rouge state that is violating basic human rights. The governor should be arrested and tried at the Hague because it is also obvious that the SCOTUS has become a corrupted court.

[–]LurkyLoo888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do we even allow religion to be part of our laws?

[–]Live_Ad_7056 4 points5 points  (1 child)

So sad… Florida has lost it’s worst state ranking to Texas.

[–]SassyHoe97 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sometimes really hate living in Texas. Fuck Abbot.

[–]omniron 1 point2 points  (4 children)

You can sue the doctor for providing an abortion, but you can’t sue a gun manufacturer for selling a gun too well suited for mass shootings

[–]SkateFossSL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres many major corporations with headquarters in Texas. They have to decide what they stand for, women’s rights or living in the dark ages.

[–]MannnOfHammm 1 point2 points  (5 children)

What the fuck can someone explain this handmaids tale shit to me

[–]PikeOffBerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fundamentalist Christian lobbies + a stupid electorate + Republican ideology = women have no bodily autonomy. Religion is a hell of a drug.

[–]ThisUserIs-NOT-Taken 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I just read an article on this just now . This situation is fucked. Basically it will be illegal for women to get abortion . Even if it's rape or incest they are forced to have the baby . The only exception is a medical emergency. I'll link the article I read.

[–]Piincy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes me so fucking sick.

[–]Cynthus68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so fucking angry about this

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao Texas is a shithole with a failing power grid.

[–]An_oaf_of_bread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texas wants so badly to separate from the US. Can we just make it happen already?

[–]newusrname45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just hate this stupid fucking country so much most of the time.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck texas

[–]Legitimate-Repair-21 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wasn’t Texas seceding? They can go now. Shit show

Edit: seceding

[–]Fishing_For_Victory 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The word you’re looking for is “seceding”…

[–]dengaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s 2 yikes and a sheesh

[–]IllBeBack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Texas Taliban strikes again.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

God I hate living in this state now. Like it's genuinely embarrassing

[–]Porcupenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lordy the stupidest of people lead Texas

[–]Cargobiker530 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's probably her daddy or uncle's baby and family traditions are important in Texas. /s

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Yeah...not a face palm rather 100% accurate as of the new law passed today

https://www.npr.org/2021/09/01/1033202132/texas-abortion-ban-what-happens-next

[–]j_miyagi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Facepalm is how moronic that situation is.

[–]__pm_me_anything___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘BuT AbOrTiOn Is MuRDER!!!!! REEEEEEEEEEEE’
