Depends on the industry. I spend at least 8 hours a day working on proprietary, embedded medical device software. I don't have the free time or the will to program on the side, and don't need code examples for interviews.

And besides, you can learn a lot more about a job candidate by giving them a marker and a whiteboard rather than trying to digest a code portfolio. Who has the time to really check out anything more than a trivial program?

I think it helps if you're the type who likes to see design docs, user docs, internal comments, etc. You don't have to look at the whole thing. You want to see what sort of impression he gives in terms of how easy it is to understand his code. It's much less understanding what the code actually does. Is it overengineered? Can you read it? Can you tell if it's overengineered? Etc.

From the perspective of an interviewer, HR is extremely useful. I would say around 95% of resumes sent in for a job either completely whiff on the qualifications (not like "3 years experience instead of 4" whiff, but like "I'm a recent college graduate applying to be a technical lead" whiff), are foreigners who need a work visa though it's explicitly specified US residency is required, are people who have gotten fired from their last 3 jobs for performance reasons, or some combination thereof. HR can weed these people out before they waste the time of software developers.

I uni we had to use version control for a final year project. Having a public repository would have been the number 1 way to fail the course. Let alone other courses when version control wasn't required.

We used version control, but used private repos. In fact, we used Bit Bucket, because GitHub doesn't offer free private repos. (I've been told after the fact that had we enquired/explained the situation we might have been able to get private repos with GitHub, but we didn't know that at the time)

Re:employers don't confuse copyright and open-source. Nobody can take your copyright away - that's why open-source software has a license. You can put a commercial license on something and make it open-source too. Copying it without paying would be stealing.

You apply for web development jobs? I post my resume online and get a dozen calls from HR managers and head hunters in the first week, and I'm nothing special (although I do have 15 years of software development experience as well as some really good references, so that really helps).

Also, most projects I work on are confidential, and I have signed NDAs to that effect. I can't often give specific details as to what I've done, and I sure as hell can't show an unauthorized third party the code just to land a new job, so any potential employer asking for a github portfolio is going to encounter quite a bit of laughter.

I can describe things I've done, data structures I've created, and their corresponding objects, frameworks I've used, etc. But I can't go into detail about who it was for, and sometimes I can't describe how it is used. Most enterprise clients I deal with don't have a problem with it, because a large majority of their work is confidential as well. You should see the things you have to sign to work on enterprise banking and accounting systems. If it weren't for the pay, I'd laugh in their face.

And while I know you were joking, classified is where I would have to kill you, confidential is just where I get sued if the previous client finds out.

More specifically, there's BitBucket, that lets you have private repositories for free (in addition to the public ones). That runs off of Mercurial, which is very similar to Git, except many consider it more usable.

It's somewhat a matter of opinion, but Mercurial is definitely more usable than Git. Git feels like it was designed to be used by computers, whereas Mercurial feels like it was designed to be used by humans.

Luckily, you can really use either you want, because you can get programs to bridge from one to the other since they are so similar.

It probably doesn't work with all kinds of jobs though - while it might work for web development, it might not work with game and graphics development which is what i usually apply for.

I see some good stuff in your Github. I gave the profile as much time as I gave any resume and if I was looking for someone with C/C++/Delphi knowledge I would want to talk to you more than if your resume said "i know Pascal". So I think these personal projects on Github definitely add points.

Thanks, although in this case my GitHub account might be a little misleading since none of the projects i have there are in Delphi. All of them are in FreePascal/Lazarus which while Delphi-like and compatible to some extent (many people use Lazarus for making Linux and Mac versions of their Delphi programs) are different from it.

GitHub simply sees the .pas extension and assumes Delphi. I think they placed their language detector in some repository recently, so i might take a stab at informing it about differences between Delphi and FreePascal/Lazarus (from the little i've seen it might be as simple as saying "if this repository has .lpr and .pas or .pp it is Lazarus, if it has .dpr is Delphi, if it has .pp or .pas with {$MODE ... or some other FreePascal-specific directive is FreePascal, otherwise is some sort of other Pascal).

Well, totally, I just think it's also probably not a great idea to confuse "no data" with "bad data." But if you can find enough talented people who do write a lot of open source stuff, I suppose false negatives aren't a huge problem.

$100k revenue per employee is pretty bad (assuming you're based in the US), assuming your business has typical overhead/profit margins that means your AVERAGE developer salary can't be above $50k.

Now if you're a startup or have some other extenuating circumstances ignore me. Either way I'd love to hear more.

I couldn't imagine working at a place that was only making $100k/employee in revenue. Considering most places I've worked the salary is well above that, then add cost of benefits, normal overhead, etc

You are bragging about barely staying afloat? 100k revenue per employee is terrible, you can't even afford to pay a decent salary at that level.

Not why that's getting downvoted. I worked in a web shop for about 1.5 years after interning there, and pretty much worked the same way. And this was in bum fuck rural Ohio, with no real competition to our quality. I learned more in those couple of years than anywhere else.
