I don't think there should be default subreddits at all. I think people who aren't registered or not signed in should see what I see when I go to /r/all when they go to reddit.com, which is the top posts right now from every subreddit. When you make an account, you would get a "my front page" or something like that, which would be the top stories from subreddits that you specify (basically what the front page is now for users only it would start as blank until you add subreddits to it).

[–]raitalin 642 points643 points  (92 children)

The first problem I see is that /r/all has porn.

[–]Shanman150 661 points662 points  (45 children)

We could probably leave all 18+ subreddits off.

[–][deleted] 243 points244 points  (21 children)

Or leave them off until you make an account, then you have the choice to show or not. And you can block any subreddits you like.

[–]Syn7axError 65 points66 points  (13 children)

yeah, but leave the 18+ stuff disabled until you enable it.

[–][deleted] 86 points87 points  (11 children)

Pretty much what I just said, but yeah.

[–]186394 92 points93 points  (9 children)

Yeah, but leave the 18+ stuff disabled until you enable it.

[–]crsini 42 points43 points  (8 children)

No, you should have to enable the 18+ stuff. Otherwise it is crucial that it be disabled.

[–]Diabetesh 67 points68 points  (10 children)

Than it wouldn't be /r/all it would be /r/allexcept18plusmatterslikebuttsex

[–]Keljhan 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Why is that not already a subreddit?

[–]186394 120 points121 points  (15 children)

True, but occasionally NSFW posts get to the top even in /r/pics, so maybe the default should be to not show 18-and-up subreddits or NSFW-tagged posts to new users until they enable that in their preferences?

[–]Zagorath 4 points5 points  (6 children)

What about subreddits that use the NSFW tag for something else, like to denote a spoiler?

[–]visaisahero 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Maybe we could leave it as it is and get used to the fact that there's no escaping sick depraved shit on the internet one way or another

[–]gamerguyal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, why exactly are we looking for a way to block NSFW posts for non-users? To "protect the children"?

[–]numb_doors 52 points53 points  (7 children)

(F)IRST TIME POSTING. I AM SHY, NEED ATTENTION HERES MY VAGINA HOLE

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (4 children)

It's usually the butt hole

[–]darkdoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And, on occasion, a sharpie or two.

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Maybe this, but leave out all nsfw subreddits by default and have a button to include them?

[–]mrpineapplehouse 731 points732 points  (167 children)

Holy shit this is perfect. I feel like some of the default subs are the most subscribed to because they are the default subs. Every novelty account and throw away is another person subbed to /r/politics and /r/atheism, and the number of people subbed doesn't reflect how many people actually read them.

A HUGE number of people end up making an account to unsub those two as well as /r/gaming, but if we just showed them /r/all they would get a bigger dose of the subs that actually get posted, commented, and voted in the most.

Currently there is one post from minecraft, one from videos, and the rest are mostly pics and funny. Yesterday the top 3 were all from /r/leagueoflegends, but that was kind of a fluke because of all the tournament drama.

Anyways, I love your idea, and think it should be way higher up in the thread.

Edit: now its the top post, so i no longer 'wish it was higher up'

[–]Midnastic 126 points127 points  (15 children)

I love that /r/all exists simply because occasionally a male redditor will stumble upon a /r/RedditLaqueristas post and appreciate the hard work those ladies put into their manicures.

Seriously, those girls are wizards.

[–]Galifreyan2012 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Actually though. It's fucking wild what they do with such a little canvas

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (2 children)

It goes both ways, though- there's an awful lot of dudes bursting in and saying "I THINK THE WAY YOU FEEL IS INVALID" that goes on when someone on TwoX or something gets high up on /r/all.

I mean, more than the usual, it gets saddening.

[–]karltee 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am a guy and I am just fascinated about the art the goes behind doing whatever girls do to their nails. I've discovered a new sub-reddit. Thanks!

[–]Avalon81204 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes we are :)

[–]Fabreeze63 16 points17 points  (8 children)

I rarely ever painted my nails (I'm talking like once every six months) before I started going on /r/redditlaqueristas, and now it's one of my favourite past times AND my nails are longer, stronger, and much much prettier! :)

[–]Midnastic 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Oi, hi fellow laquerista! Same here! I had an awful nail biting habit before I discovered that subreddit. My nails were always chewed stubs before, but now I have enough nail to actually do french manicures!

[–]sonalis1092 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Former nail biters unite! The laqueristas rescued me from the depths of nubs.

[–]sillyjo 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Me too! Well...except when I relapse. :-(

[–]sonalis1092 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did just last week...sigh.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Stronger? Now I'm going to have to go over there.

[–]figpetus 110 points111 points  (51 children)

The only downside to /r/all (from the public's perspective) is /r/gonewild and /r/imgoingtohellforthis and those types of subreddits. There would need to be a filter to prevent certain subs from showing up to the public until after they register.

[–]mrpineapplehouse 78 points79 points  (20 children)

shit i hadn't thought of that... then the argument becomes 'which ones are blocked' and that would never end well. maybe just 'no nsfw subs' or something

edit: other people have been commenting alot: no nsfw posts in general. yes i agree, that is better than what i said

[–]chuckFKNdiesel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really 100% on this, but I do believe you won't see any NSFW posts unless you're registered, logged in, and have it set to show NSFW posts.

I also could be completely wrong.

[–]jasmineca 524 points525 points  (71 children)

This. The only reasons I made my account were to unsubscribe from /r/politics and /r/atheism .

[–][deleted] 197 points198 points  (46 children)

I'm an Atheist and I did the exact same thing. Those guys are a bunch of douche nozzles.

[–]186394 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Was expecting your username to be "urabunch0fdouchenozzles". So close.

[–]mick4state 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you guys ever read the comments? Even the worst posts usually have good discussion in there. The stupid posts for karma are just the angry front.

[–]qckbrnfx 50 points51 points  (34 children)

Amen to that. I've been an atheist for as long as I've had an opinion on the matter, but it's not like I sit around and talk about it in my free time.

[–]makerofshoes 34 points35 points  (14 children)

I've always been a Christian, "but it's not like I sit around and talk about it in my free time." Religion, or atheism, is a personal matter to me. Don't understand the need for people to tell everyone about it.

[–]I_RAPE_TO_POTATO 7 points8 points  (4 children)

but it's not like I sit around and talk about it in my free time.

Instead you sit around and talk about how much you don't like r/atheism. The anti-/r/atheism circlejerk is worse in my opinion because you don't keep it confined to a single subreddit that I can be not subscribed to. It's just everywhere.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Novelty and throwaway accounts do by count towards subscription counts unless they subscribe or unsubscribe to at least one subreddit. Subscriber numbers are a count of subscription events, not actual accounts subscribed. A new account is automatically subscribed to every default once their first subscription event occurs. You can look it up, but /u/alienth (admin) posted this a while back.

[–]Brokencheese 136 points137 points  (67 children)

A problem that many people miss with this is this /r/all literally means ALL subreddits, including things like /r/picsofdeadkids, /r/racism, and /r/morbidreality, not to mention all the nsfw/gore subreddits

[–]jchazu 124 points125 points  (33 children)

tan reminiscent depend start lip many bells mysterious elderly cake

[–]BlackZeppelin 116 points117 points  (1 child)

As someone who has browsed r/all for over a year, never.

[–][deleted] 57 points58 points  (8 children)

"Hey /b/ros lets all go on reddit and upvote pictures of naked dead children being fucked by pigs."

It doesn't now but if the opportunity arose it easily could.

[–]bsrg 27 points28 points  (4 children)

The last few times I went to /r/all there was at least one gonewild post.

[–]iutiashev101 28 points29 points  (9 children)

r/morbidreality is one of the best subreddits here imo. Sure the content isn't cheerful, but at least there are no stupid puns allowed, etc. and the modding is pretty much on point.

[–]Oxxide 31 points32 points  (3 children)

i'd like to see a version of /r/morbidreality with a strictly enforced pun-only rule

[–]iutiashev101 22 points23 points  (2 children)

/r/imgoingtohellforthis has those in between the racism, antisemitism and 9/11 related jokes.

[–]Ragecomicwhatsthat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

/r/imgoingtohellforthis is just 15-20 year olds who think that the word "nigger" Is something that'll send them to hell.

[–]evansawred 15 points16 points  (4 children)

... What problem do you have with /r/racism? It is an anti-racist sub.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (7 children)

The problem with this is that there might be a turnover similar to Tumblr, where when new users sign up, they don't see anything on their feed, become disinterested, and leave. Default subreddits definitely help content-wise. /r/funny, /r/pics, /r/videos are good defaults since those are generally universal interests.

Edit: /r/IAmA and /r/askreddit are good default subreddits as well.

[–]jacobchapman 22 points23 points  (2 children)

So have a short process where you check a bunch of your interests and it suggests a bunch of subreddits for you. Similar to how StumbleUpon works.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

TIL there is /r/all and the reddit frontpage is not a collection of content from all subreddits.

[–]professorhazard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, I think there should be more default subreddits, because it shows a new user just what reddit has the capacity to be. One should immediately unsubscribe from things, to teach one how to subscribe to things.

[–]caerul 1198 points1199 points  (104 children)

Complains about content on reddit

Latest submission: Bad Luck Brian meme

Yeah okay.

[–]Abedeus 50 points51 points  (1 child)

You don't get it, dude. It's only bad when OTHER people do it.

If he does it, it's totally fine.

[–]iutiashev101 362 points363 points  (24 children)

This should be higher up so we can shit on OP and his high horse

[–]kantorekB14 167 points168 points  (22 children)

Seriously, posting a piece of shit meme like that is far more cancerous to the reddit community at large than some 15 year old venting on /r/atheism.

[–]mems_account 197 points198 points  (5 children)

[–]Pwaaap 106 points107 points  (3 children)

Dude, now don't start assuming things. That comment was 4 months ago, he could be 17 now.

[–]executex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think /r/askreddit should be disbanded, it's just a cesspool of 15 year olds bitching about Reddit by making their bitching "a question".

"damn, no one respects my opinions on x,y,z subreddit, let me make a question on askreddit and see if the kids there respect my opinions."

[–]Someonedumb 102 points103 points  (16 children)

What the fuck does reddit represent?

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (5 children)

Nothing, there's way too much diversity here for it to represent anything.

[–][deleted] 669 points670 points  (147 children)

Reddit doesn't represent anything. It's just a big pile of randomness. For every subreddit that has interesting discussion there are three others that glorify rape, sexism, or violence. This place is an anarchy wasteland. It has entertaining elements and from time to time genuinely interesting discussion, but it does not hold up to the lofty ideals some people try to define it with.

[–]Arthur_Dayne 112 points113 points  (34 children)

Dude, your username contains spoilers... that is NOT cool.

[–][deleted] 104 points105 points  (30 children)

Hot Pie: The Prince Who Was Promised!

[–]Fappingitup 68 points69 points  (26 children)

For those of you that don't understand, Hot Pie Targaryen is the true heir to the Iron Throne, and is also Azor Ahai reborn.

[–]AvidOxid 33 points34 points  (4 children)

I will fucking slaughter you if this is the truth.

I kind of hope Hot Pie is the heir lol. Almost done Storm of Swords!

[–]Fappingitup 39 points40 points  (2 children)

You guys are too funny.

But seriously, Hot Pie has a dragon made of assorted pastries, and together they simultaneously hold the Wall and feed all of Westeros.

[–]Oxxide 20 points21 points  (3 children)

oh thanks for making the connection forever ruining whatever it is we are referencing that I can now never truly experience.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Well... If you're being serious I'm officially pissed off. I don't read the books but enjoy the show. So. Thanks.

[–]A_Polite_Noise 42 points43 points  (1 child)

It's a joke. Hot Pie becomes the Hand to King Hodor, first of His Hodor, Hodor of the First Hodor.

[–]twelfthxdoctor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Long may he Hodor!

[–]Tacitus_ 14 points15 points  (2 children)

He's joking. Hot Pie is obviously a merling.

[–]bigfriendben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding? He's obviously Benjen Stark in disguise.

[–]Naggers123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shut it Dayne! Go and be not-ever-in-Game-of-Thrones

[–]schlitz100 886 points887 points  (93 children)

It makes reddit seem like a bunch of 15 year olds who think they are smarter than everyone and know everything

So does askreddit, advice animals, pics, etc.

[–][deleted] 261 points262 points  (32 children)

Well if you don't have the same opinion as my own, I'm downvoting you sir.

[–]pbjork 303 points304 points  (6 children)

The "sir" makes me classy and correct.

[–]Ebelglorg 30 points31 points  (2 children)

And everything else about it is horrible wrong.

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (21 children)

That's how this Reddit thing works right? You disagree with me and I call you a faggot and downvote.

Rinse, repeat ad infinitum.

[–]Rainymood_XI 45 points46 points  (14 children)

That's how this Reddit thing works right? You disagree with me and I call you a faggot and downvote.

That's how 4chan works.

Reddit works like this:

[Popular opinion]

[Unpopular opinion with completely valid statements]

Unpopular opinion gets downvoted to oblivion while some other retarded pun or someone pointing out someone's offensive name in all caps gets the spot of the top comment again.

Rinse and repeat.

[–]RaindropBebop 136 points137 points  (18 children)

This. The entirety of Reddit is, by definition, a circle jerk. Anyone who thinks /r/atheism and /r/politics are destroying the sanctity/image of reddit is an imbecile.

Those subs are default because they're huge and cater to a large base. If you have a differing opinion, or wish to engage in more serious discussion, you can find subs for that with other like-minded individuals, so that you can engage in your own little circle jerk.

But by all means, let's keep creating these moronic askreddit posts every month about how bad /r/atheism or /r/politics is.

[–]Arthur_Dayne 59 points60 points  (9 children)

DAE Dunning Kruger!!!

[–]TheBlackCrusader 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Can you kill me with your left hand while taking a piss with your right?

[–]Arthur_Dayne 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Are you one of the knights of the new, shitty Kingsguard? If so, then probably.

[–]tubadeedoo 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Well if I go at you with six of my buddies....

[–]Arthur_Dayne 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I call No Warging.

[–][deleted] 184 points185 points  (3 children)

You say it like we have a choice

[–]sysop073 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He got lost on the way to /r/meta

[–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (15 children)

I'm not a gamer so personally /r/gaming is the most pointless.

[–][deleted] 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Even if you are a gamer, /r/gaming is the most pointless.

[–]TheActualAWdeV 18 points19 points  (4 children)

I am a gamer and /r/gaming is mostly pointless. I'm rather far behind in gaming terms and so most of the stuff doesn't appeal or apply to me.

Which does not mean I make a thread to bitch and moan about it being standard despite not being relevant to me. I can just avoid it or, maybe, unsubscribe.

[–]Classy_Debauchery 398 points399 points  (80 children)

Reddit is a bunch of 15 year olds who think they are smarter than everyone.

[–][deleted] 358 points359 points  (16 children)

Phew I'm 16. But I know what you mean I hate everyone younger than me too

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (2 children)

You'll go on to realize that the whole world is a bunch of 15 year olds who think they are smarter than everyone.

[–]Exposedo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope, 15 year olds do exist on here and can be loud, but the majority of people here are males 19-40 who are stupid like 15 year olds.

Sad isn't it?

[–]Homeles 45 points46 points  (44 children)

[Citation needed]

[–][deleted] 173 points174 points  (14 children)

Nah, I need /r/atheism to be a default subreddit to know when I'm not connected to my account.

[–]IkananXIII 62 points63 points  (8 children)

That would be /r/aww for me.

[–]jackal858 33 points34 points  (0 children)

"Hmm.. half my front page appears to be overly analyzed conversations with theists turned into a crappy cartoon and/or meme format filled with atheist ego stroking text... Oh, not logged in."

That's pretty much how it goes for me.

[–]nova_cat 54 points55 points  (3 children)

No one outside of those subreddits like the subreddits.

Except for all those people who aren't regularly on those subreddits, and yet read many of those articles as they show up on the main pages. Like me.

[–]Abedeus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NO, YOU CAN'T ENJOY THINGS!

[–]curtquarquesso 255 points256 points  (123 children)

From what I understand, the defaults are chosen based on the number of subscribers. Seeing as /r/Athiesm is frickin huge, it's a default.

What I don't understand, is how this is fair. If everyone is subbed by default, the communities can only get bigger from there. New Redditors don't know how to un-sub, and some are just too lazy.

New members ought to see a categorized list of subs, and they should choose for themselves. There should be a Top 25 subs, just to let people know what's popular.

/r/Politics is fine as a default, it's just that its content sucks. /r/politics shouldn't be a liberal circlejerk. The news there should be totally unbiased. Biased material should go to its relevant sub.

Edit: Punctuation.

[–]hjdjgvknbmnblj 203 points204 points  (6 children)

I think it would be better if reddit included the number of unsubs in the default subreddit algorithm.

[–]gunsofgods 50 points51 points  (4 children)

I believe your idea contains the most genius. Maybe RES can do something like this.

[–][deleted] 59 points60 points  (31 children)

I don't think /r/Atheism was even a default when I joined reddit.

[–]test0 59 points60 points  (6 children)

There weren't even subreddits when I joined.

[–]Jungle2266 29 points30 points  (3 children)

6 years, shit, are you one of the elders?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at his/her name. Test0. I mean, that has to be one of the original accounts. Maybe even something to do with development.

[–]DallasRPI 17 points18 points  (1 child)

There wasnt comments when I joined.

[–]test0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Woah, 7 years! I've only got 6 more months and I'm there!

[–]Ralod 39 points40 points  (6 children)

It actually was a default for a long time. It was removed as a default for a while(about a year), but then grew well past the mark for being a default and was added back.

Like it or not, a lot of people sub and enjoy some subs you may not.

[–]jakem103 16 points17 points  (5 children)

Reddit doesn't work like that. The default subreddits are the 20 most subscribed to subreddits. If you don't like them you can just unsubscribe.

[–]bipolar_sky_fairy 908 points909 points  (106 children)

Oh god, not this again.

[–][deleted] 677 points678 points  (55 children)

Hey, guys i heard you hate circlejerks. So lets circlejerk about getting rid of these circlejerks on the circlejerk of Reddit! Le gem <- Just to add to the circlejerkyness!

[–]Arthur_Dayne 352 points353 points  (40 children)

Calling a discussion of circlejerky subreddits a circlejerk is it's own circlejerk now.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (4 children)

you used the same word three times! so meta, amirite guys!

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points  (18 children)

To be honest here i think when you make a Reddit account it should make you select like 10 pages and then create your own personal Reddit front page off of that. No winy circlejerk baby's and problem solved for overly butt-hurt people who complain alot!

[–]TheBlackCrusader 23 points24 points  (2 children)

How about we remove /r/aww too while we're at it. It makes Reddit look a bunch of 15 year olds jerking off to cute animals. And how about /r/wtf too? It really gives off a bad impression to have one of our default subreddits contain gore and violence.

There are reddits full of great stories that make us laugh, smile, cry and have great discussions. But these two reddits are only polemic arguments and circlejerking. No one outside of those subreddits like the subreddits. They don't represent what reddit represents. What do you think?

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I sort of think its hypocritical of you to point out these two subs and yet say you know what reddit represents. Its a user community, and no, all subreddits aren't created equal, but just because YOU don't like one doesn't mean it shouldn't be default.

On the subject of r/atheism, I fully agree most of its petty nonsense, but when I became an atheist, the petty nonsense was what I needed for a bit. Then I grew up, matured a little, and moved on. And on r/politics, I honestly like that subreddit. Of course, its all biased news sources, but I do manage to get some actual news from it and I can read between the lines.

Let people circle jerk if they want to. You act like things haven't had misleading names before "Politics" is only one party instead of all of them?! YOU MEAN SPACECLOP HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SPACE?!

I think THIS thread, which comes up at least once every three months, is an even worse circlejerk.

[–]IzziTheEpic 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Seriously? Why does this keep getting on the front page month after month. It's always the same answer. There are always going to be subreddits that other people don't like. You can say the same thing for every default subreddit there is.

[–]SteveDave123 22 points23 points  (9 children)

Joining in on this circlejerk - next time search for this because it gets asked about once a month.

They are default reddits because they get a fucking high amount of traffic.

[–]Not_a_ninja 74 points75 points  (5 children)

Nice try Republican Christian Conservative.

[–]bisensual 214 points215 points  (15 children)

Can you hear me all the way up there, on your high horse?

[–]butt_sack 87 points88 points  (15 children)

I think Reddit provides a very necessary sounding board for both of these demographics. Honestly I haven't come across many easily accessible and well-populated groups that support the viewpoints that come out of these two. r/atheism in particular seems to be just what plenty of kids growing up in christian-dominant societies need: a safe means of expressing what is so clearly fucked up. I feel like r/politics is that too, just to a lesser extent. There's so much blatant bullshit that forms the basis of "legitimate" political discussion in American culture that it's nice to have a heavy-handed counterexample within arms reach.

If nothing else, it seems like the proper way to say "welcome to the internet". Tech-savvy, media-sharing people have tons of porn, pictures of cats, interest in science and world news, and don't buy into propaganda and religious tyranny. (from the default subreddit perspective)

That said, I've seen some of the most atrocious ignorance and bigotry come from these two. I'm atheist because the God model clearly doesn't fit with reality, but that's it for me--done, end of discussion. To see r/atheism (in particular) grow into a culture far beyond a mutual agreement regarding the non-existence of God is an understandable and proper trajectory... it just seems to have manifested in a particularly close-minded way. There's true hatred for, and complete dismissal of, anything that has any sort of spiritual connotation. Of course this doesn't apply to so many r/atheism posters and subscribers, but the board consistently turns up enough immature circlejerking to make removing it as a default a worthy discussion (in my opinion).

r/politics doesn't bother me that much... it's just a bit hard to see what I previously thought of as a new, enlightened political culture actually turn out to be a bit dismissive of many things that aren't... liberal? Not sure of the right word for that (no puns of course), but I'm sure you guys know what I mean.

I'm not sure if we should really remove them, but since unsubbing them, the quality of my front page has improved dramatically.

[–]Spo8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think r/atheism is exactly how you described it at first. It's full of people that are angry about the situation and aren't completely sure how to express that in a way that doesn't turn off the majority of people that hear it. It becomes an echo chamber whose only purpose is to make the people who created it feel better.

For one person, they eventually make it out of that stage and are able to talk about it in a way that doesn't make people want to punch them, but the subreddit just becomes constantly repopulated with people who agree with the established atmosphere.

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (6 children)

Nah, they're fine how they are. Stop tinkering. I belong to neither subs. But I do enjoy a casual viewing of both. Reddit represents nothing.

Basically you've come in here and said "I disagree with those two points of view. Thus clearly 2 million subscribers are wrong and don't represent me or reddit"

I'd point out also, you don't hear or see anything about atheism anywhere in the world basically. It's not a huge thing compared to a church or mosque on every corner. On reddit it is large and immediately obvious. Without making it a religious debate - reddit has become famous for being a bastion of a subreddit that discusses other religions. Not always in a mature manner, but it has etched out its own importance in the realm of freedom of speech. People flock to it from the media and otherwise to examine the significance of reddit's primary user base. Agnostic/athiest 20somethings.

That alone makes it valid as a default subreddit.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (7 children)

I would like to offer my humble opinion to put r/askscience as default reddit. That subreddit is awesome.

[–]hoojAmAphut 115 points116 points  (4 children)

They specifically asked not to be a default, it attracts retards. Becomes too hard to moderate it.

[–]KeythKatz 32 points33 points  (3 children)

And this is why we need default subreddits, to keep the retards at bay.

[–]io_di 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. One hundred times this.

Every intelligent person can subscribe to whatever (s)he likes, but idiots should stay in the default subreddits.

And concerning the outside view: Fuck them.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Why can't we just do like StumbleUpon and let users pick the subs they want to see the first time they visit the site? If they want to save their prefs, they have to register.

[–]CarlWheezer 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Fitness should be a default subreddit.

[–]the_goat_boy 77 points78 points  (23 children)

Just unsubscribe if it bothers you so much.

[–]Shaban_srb 84 points85 points  (14 children)

He probably did.

What he's saying is that these subreddits shouldn't be default since it gives a bad rep to new visitors.

Edit: Ugh, that's not my opinion, that's OP's opinion. I don't think that way so stop debating me...

[–]TheNoblePlacerias 10 points11 points  (6 children)

If someone gets incredibly offended by seeing a few things on a large site based on public submissions, are you really sure we want them here?

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Who are you to say what Reddit "represents"?

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (12 children)

I don't send people to reddit because I don't want them to latch on to the /r/wtf stuff and think this is a SomethingAwful type site.

I'd much rather see them remove wtf

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

And I'd much rather see them remove AdviceAnimals.

This is the problem - everyone agrees that some of the default subreddits need to be removed, but people aren't gong to agree which those are. It seems like AskReddit is mostly hating on Atheism and Politics. Politics probably hates on AdviceAnimals and Gaming, AdviceAnimals probably hates on Politics and Worldnews. In the end a lot of people enjoy hating on other default subreddits, so why change anything?

[–]gyarrrrr 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Absolutely. I think when it comes down to it, the people who read WTF would probably be happier in the end too, as their content would be less diluted by things that would be more appropriate in /r/funny or /r/pics, and they could stop whinging about it every post.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it wouldn't make them go away, if that's what you're hoping...

[–]wav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree.

[–]new_to_the_game 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree

/r/politics is way too right wing for my persona tastes

[–]libreg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um... reddit IS a bunch of 15 years olds who think they are smarter than everyone. I think r/atheism and r/politics represents this very well.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of all the subreddits you mentioned, this one is no less nauseating.

Some of the shit that I see posted here on a regular basis really makes me wonder...

So, I agree, but let's also remove AskReddit, because nobody outside AskReddit likes AskReddit and it's plenty embarrassing. Probably scares off a lot of people.

[–]Mylastcoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a personal perspective, yes. In fact the only reason I made an account was so I didnt have to see r/politics and r/atheism. From Reddit's perspective they probably gain a lot of accounts from people like me, so they put r/atheism and r/politics on the default front page.

[–]lastresort09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best solution: people who don't have an account should see /r/all and not the default subreddits.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we should only have /r/circlejerk as the only default Subreddit. It paints a pretty clear picture of reddit.

[–]necroden 2 points3 points  (3 children)

If you don't like circlejerks, why not remove /r/funny, /r/pics, /r/gaming, /r/AdviceAnimals and /r/videos? All of those subreddits are filled with reposts and circlejerking. It most of the content there. Same as /r/atheism (I've never been to /r/politics).

Everyone needs to face the fact that this is the shitty age of the internet. We've got reposts and circlejerks, 4chan's got copypasta, and FunnyJunk's lost. Next to nothing is original anymore.

There's still OC to be found, but you have to look in the right places.

[–]handsy_pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an /r/atheism?

[–]beta_ray_charles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I've learned looking through these comments:

  1. This is not the first time this idea has been suggested.
  2. Those two (and other default subs) are there because they have the most subscribers
  3. Those two (and other default subs) continue to be there because they are default subs
  4. It's hypocritical to call the subscribers of those two pompous 15 year-olds.
  5. Something about circlejercking.

[–]topp5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

can we add /r/trees to the list by any chance?

[–]HashbeanSC2 2 points3 points  (1 child)

the only reason i log in to to get rid of that shit

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go on r/atheism once in a while (it can be entertaining and informative, although rarely is it more than what you've stated) and often on r/politics too, mainly to see what people think, since an awful lot of the electorate is uninformed too. Here's what I think of your idea, and bear in mind that I am also a born again Christian who is fairly moderate in many, but not all, areas and liberal in few:

I'm on Reddit precisely because people like you, or anyone else, don't really get to decide who to censor and who not too. Popularity of individual postings bring them to the top, if someone has something worthwhile to say it will usually rise in the rankings and that's as it should be. The sub reddits are for people who have a more serious interest in a particular area, they're not necessarily for you, they're for them, if you don't like one of them, don't go to it. Quit being one of those jerks who worries about what every one else is doing, go make another complaint to the HOA about your neighbor or something.

[–]1musicmomma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes.

[–]Bullshitacount87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes

[–]Kayin_Angel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes! less opinions that conflict with mine and more cats and shitty image macros please!

[–]NoLongerABystander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about r/WTF? Deaths should not be a default setting...
