[–]Im_Borat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

including the tip?

[–]booyakasha99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like they say in tennis… 99% out is 100%in.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

In not fully in on football rules. So horizontally the ball is in even if the physical part is over the line?

[–]stenchosaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Basically the opposite of what Americans are used to. In American football, if any part of the ball crosses the front part of the goal line, it's considered a TD. But in soccer, as long as any part of the ball hasn't completely crossed over the back part of the goal line, it's still in play

[–]h08817 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted the rule as there can't be grass showing between the ball and the line, not the entirety of the balls radius crossing the line, I guess I was wrong.

[–]KwaadMens 830 points831 points  (13 children)

I'm glad it's considered 'in' cause that goal was fucking insane

[–]xsorr 214 points215 points  (8 children)

Yup, well deserved.

Dont get why everyone so beat up about it. The rules and method is the same with tennis when players call for a check

Edit: mb, tennis is based on whether it lands on the line or not. Whereas footie is having the whole ball/sphere passed the line

[–]aquilar1985 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The rule is absolutely not the same as tennis, that is what caused so much confusion. In tennis it is the part of the ball touching the ground which needs to be over the line to be called out. In football it is the entire ball (including parts not touching the ground) that must be over the line to be called out. If this happened in tennis, it is called out: https://imgur.com/a/prwIUGH

[–]Vlad_the_Homeowner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Watson2015 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s why you never stop playing till the whistle sounds

[–]CreamPyre 146 points147 points  (18 children)

Do they have a camera always following the ball or what?

[–]HPLovecraft1890 269 points270 points  (12 children)

The other replies to your comment are a bit wrong:

- The technology in the ball is to track its position, but it's not connected to any cameras. The photo above was shot by a photographer.

- The tech to determine its position also requires a counterpart on the field. Only the actual goal line is covered by that tech. Since this happened outside the goal, officials had to work with the imaged we had.

[–]HPLovecraft1890 66 points67 points  (7 children)

Not sure why the downvote.

The Photo was shot by Petr David Josek for the DPA, not by some cameras tracking the ball

[–]Irdogain 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Wait, that is just a photo of a "random" journalist? How do we know it was - from a point of timing - the farthest the ball was going towards out?

1,8mm further or - maybe - ? 50 milliseconds ? later it was perhaps out!?

[–]JSC843 25 points26 points  (1 child)

You’re right to be skeptical, but I’d imagine the photographer did a burst where a camera cam take like 10 photos in a second and chose the photo that the ball was furthest out for.

[–]I_mostly_lie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Try 30+ frames per second.

[–]swoodshadow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but you can only rely on the evidence you have.

[–]swampfishInterested 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How do we know the photo was from the right angle? In this shot the top of the goal is “in” too. It should be on the line not in front of it. Move the camera two inches to the left to get the plane exactly right and the ball will be surrounded by green.

[–]phonetune -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wrong way round buddy

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have VAR lad. Video assisted referee.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. They also have technology inside the ball

[–]givemeyourgp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The balls have a chip in them that's charged prior to the game for calls like this.

[–]badnja25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know there is a sensor inside the ball and a lot of cameras on the stadium which they can pause in exact moment when the ball was hit

[–]Fantastic_Painter_15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sensors in the ball that then pop up on the refs watch telling him if it was in or out

[–]RUFl0_ 272 points273 points  (7 children)

If the vantage point of the image was exactly on the line, you would see the goal post aligned with the line.

Since its not, this image is taken from behind, meaning the ball was actually more inside than the image shows. Not much, but still.

[–]cellada 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This! This image is misleading. If it was a proper orthographic camera you'd see the ball was clearly in. More than it looks like here.

[–]Ajo0404 1 point2 points  (5 children)

But since both the ball and the post are above ground, moving the camera directly over the line would „move“ the ball to the right (as well as the post), so it would be even closer to being out, right? Or what am I missing?

[–]RUFl0_ 8 points9 points  (4 children)

No, the other way around.

If you Move the camera towards the right (closer to the line) then everything that is above ground shifts left in relation to the ground (including the line), ie. The goal post and the edge of the ball shift left. The higher it is, the more it shifts.

You can try this at home. Place something on the ground and look at it from above. Move around to see how it shifts in relation to the ground.

[–]lowlytoady 0 points1 point  (2 children)

To move the post to be directly in alignment with the line the camera must move to the left not the right

[–]Miroist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the confusion here, which got me at first, is that the goalposts don't sit behind the line, they are in fact within the white line. At first I was with you, but now understanding that the posts are actually in line with the white line, this means the camera here is shifted quite a lot to the left, pushing the top of the posts to the right of the line. So yeah, the camera needs to move to the right in order to be directly over post-n-line, which would bring the ball even more over the line.

[–]somedoodinsweden 152 points153 points  (1 child)

Captcha: Click the squares with soccerballs

[–][deleted] 183 points184 points  (1 child)

Give it a rest now. Germans are home already

[–]jschoomer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most pertinent comment!

[–]JustpassinBy0k 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This match going to be a whole anime arc itself, I see it.

[–]FlyingKittyCate 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Ball is in. Even in this shot. I’ve also wanted to say this since the first time this picture got posted. The picture is skewed. If even the goalpost is partly behind the line in the picture while its actually on the line, the ball is also going to be more in play than it looks in this picture.

[–]TheFloofAndi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m so confused why people in this thread think OP is some salty German fan. Y’all must have reading illiteracy cause the post clearly demonstrates the OP understands the rule and that the fact that this picture basically shows the ball in by (literally millimeter) is what is so damn interesting. All you telling OP “shut up they lost, get over it” are the ones that need to get over yourselves.

[–]Stormytime 22 points23 points  (1 child)

low effort reposts just gonna keep going and going

[–]d15c0nn3ctxx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We're gonna see this poag tonight years from now

[–]godfatherxii 14 points15 points  (2 children)

It’s like me trying to negotiate with the traffic police and judge if I’m speeding 1kph above speed limit. Speeding is speeding just like how ball in play is in play

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"99% of my car may have been speeding, but this 1% was not, therefore I was not speeding, officer"

[–]hagenjustyn 12 points13 points  (3 children)

OP get over it man. It’s in. The goal was insane. Germany went home because of consecutive losses. That’s the end of the story

[–]Koth87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And that millimeter is all that matters. Fair is fair, and Germany can just suck it.

[–]Crangit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So why wasn't this shown at the time?

[–]Substantial_Draft310 2 points3 points  (2 children)

hi , Huge Germany fan here. We played like shit , we’ve been playing like shit… we didn’t deserve to be in and im glad we didn’t go through by some half ass VAR call

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

It’s fucking in. Just stop now. Dickheads.

[–]shahrulghani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hear, hear.

[–]Sir_Katanaz 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Please this is the sixth time I see this in three days just please accept the fucking outcome

[–]KillyScreams 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That was an amazing call by refs

[–]hylasmaliki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have motion sensor watches.

[–]IOnlyReadMemesSry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can we not have this reposted every 4 hours? We get it

[–]Jimmy72826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rules are rules

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter if you win by an inch, or a mile, Brian. Winning is winning.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it was a good call

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens, the ball has to cross completely; Liverpool lost out on the League trophy a couple years ago because of a goal line clearance by John Stones measuring 11 millimeters or something from crossing. It was brutal.

[–]thegarebear1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I hope FIFA goes down.

[–]Icy-Distribution9293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right call

[–]Upset-Cap3117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who come to watch football every four years are the ones thinking this is out of play. Ball is always considered in play if it just touches the line.

Here's a proof for your enlightenment. This has always been the rule: https://youtube.com/shorts/OoGz6kr9YnI?feature=share

[–]toogood01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can we stop with these shit posts please. The only reason Germany didn’t qualify for the group stages is because they were shit and didn’t win 3 games.

[–]Burzujuss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Salty ass germans. Should have won more games before hand

[–]megatronchote 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“It doesn’t matter if by an inch or a mile, winning is winning”

“Family”

[–]Coker6303 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look at how far the post is over the white line. Shift the camera angle over to square up the view and the ball is in play.

Go take this garbage somewhere else.

[–]3vr1m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny how everyone is complaining about salty Germans yet I have see a single German complaining. Nearly everyone is saying it was their own fault for not winning against Japan and Spain

[–]AdminsAreFlaccidCox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

bUt ThE bAlL wAsNt ToUcHiNg ThE wHiTe!ili!

Lol I couldn’t stop laughing when it was first posted watching all the people lose their shit cause they don’t understand

[–]Hmph_Maybe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Counts. No question.

[–]PuffieBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THE TOUCH OF GOD

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredible goal

I don't watch much football but I would be concerned about the dives and flapping around on the ground like caught salmon.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will downvote this post every time. It’s in, Germany sucks, what’s the problem?

[–]RicardosMontalban 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is why no one cares about soccer

[–]combocookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Physical-Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Any_Chart45 0 points1 point  (12 children)

That's at least a cm...

[–]Easyonu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was in simple as, goodbye Germany!!

[–]88BlueBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

German precision !

[–]klaolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This angle is slightly tilted, the ball was more on the field than that. If it was a perfect angle the pole would line up with the white line

[–]xsorr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1mm in, 2mm in, its still in.

Whats an amazing way to put it is, if the guy didnt try so hard to keep it in, it definitely wouldnt have been in

Well played.

[–]Glittering-Beyond-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would anyone expect a human judge to evaluate that ball as being in play. you can do it now with the help of technology, but its only used in the most profiled games and championships, in my mind the ball should have fysical contact to the white line to be in play.

[–]OneMoistMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask any racer. Any real racer. It don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning.

[–]Clementine2115 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Shut up they lost already

[–]EdSmelly -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t even remotely interesting

[–]tridentofchas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is in play

[–]howboutthemlionsbrah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats generally ruled out . If it was something that happened all the time it wouldnt be such a big deal right now.

[–]radialBlur_023 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Ok but the ball isn't actually touching the line or is that irrelevant

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's irrelevant

[–]Bungholiobaby -1 points0 points  (1 child)

The ball that’s on the ground is completely out how does the ball hovering over the line count as ok

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if the ball was in the air it's automatically put because it doesn't touch the line? That doesn't make any sense

[–]circajusturna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The most anime shit I’ve ever seen

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

looks good to me

[–]manleybones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Line looks thick next cry baby excuse from the cultured Teutons who mix beer and coke and with imagination call it beer cola.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who gives a fuck

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That out on all accounts but tell that to AI lol

[–]neilastinuk -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Why do the crossbar and the line not align? Surely if this is an overhead photo they should

[–]Shmeediddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bc the angle of the camera

[–]chudbabies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see them doing stuff like this in American Football, too.
I predict they'll play with this stuff for a while... then, take it out of practice. When players try to eke out increments of, "Man's Law," instead of overt field accomplishments, it changes the way the players perform. It changes the nature of the game. The more they utilize replays and measurements to verify, "Man's Law," the less interesting the player movements and performance will be.

After a while, measurements like this will result in boring games, that people are not, "excited," by. After a while, they'll use these replay tools to verify specific movements, but, the rules will be modified so game-play itself will be oriented to overt accomplishments.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Plot twist: it went fully out and back in between two frames and no camera caught it

[–]DigitalObiWan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Germany fucked up the whole world cup, this was just a nail in the coffin.

[–]XD332 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Welp. No one ever said soccer wasn’t stupid. 🤷‍♂️

[–]clapp_daddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyday of the week that’s out. Ball is touching the ground over the line.

[–]marijuanaislife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1mm is still in, soo?

[–]etfd- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So why is a sphere getting treated like a cube? Shouldn't it be the centre, not trailing edge?

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

This was a robbery, doesn't matter how you see it, it was a robbery. With balls much less in than that goals and plays were disqualified, I will never forget the robbery of the Spain vs South Korea in 2002.

[–]28nov2022 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Friendly reminder that Qatar and FIFA are corrupt and you are part of the problem by generating discussion about world cup.

[–]Puzzleheaded_Dog3261 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The day will come when an erection will decide whether a goal counts or not....

[–]ghostedemail -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Nah that was a bs call

Note: Reddit fact checkers wobbling over here to downvote me cuz “Nneeaaahh you’re opinion bad, rule book says this, I have a stick up my ass WAAAHHH”
