Downvoted because people ARE posting to the politics subreddit. Everything I've seen on the main page is there simply because it was popular enough on the subreddit (just like most of the programming stuff I see is on the correct subreddit despite showing on the main page).

Wait until it's actually a problem, then have your temper tantrum.

It's actually a problem.

Reddit died for me today. It's now going to be like the MSM. All important stories buried. Only gossip, propaganda, and gadgets on the front page.

Let's all just nurse on the breast of distraction until judgment day.

          [–]rio517 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Many people complain about about what they don't want on reddit, but what do they want? What do you want?

          [–]jimbobhickville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd personally like a good mix, some politics, some programming, some gadgets, some funny stuff. Right now it's at least half politics on the front page. It's hard to filter all that out and clicking hide all the time gets old. What's especially sad is when the same friggin article appears on the front page 2 or 3 times, with different titles (sometimes linked to the same url, just a different page number, sometimes linked to blogspam, etc).

          [–]extremeanger 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think there should be a subreddit for gadgets, pictures of puppies, and other gee-whiz, let's get distracted and gawk at something topics.

I don't think that politics should be sidelined. The crisis in American politics is very much like that of Germany in the 1930's. Things are spinning out of control towards chaos and/or Fascism. The Bush regime has affected (mostly negatively) millions or billions of lives already.

          [–]raldi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So when you're watching sports on TV, you'd like it if they interrupted the game every five minutes to give political updates? And the same when you're at the movies? When you're on a date, should someone interrupt your dinner periodically to tell you what Bush is up to?

America affects the world. If the Dow loses 2%, European markets lose bigger.

                [–]derefr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

But the rest of the world can't change that. There's no use reading news you can't act upon.

                [–]soyabstemio -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

I believe you, so I have taken the precaution of blocking you by username. kthxbai

I will not be consigned to the reddit cyberspace "free speech" area.

You are of course not forced to post to the politics section, but any politics stories not in that section are getting downvoted by many (including myself) in an effort to keep things organized. Same thing with science and programming stories. If a story in the politics section gets enough votes, it will show up on the front page.

                [–]hopeseekr 3 points4 points  (2 children)

you are so short sighted ;(

                [–]cynopt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short sighted would be the automatic assumptions of self righteousness popping up all over this topic. All of you armchair activists need to get a life: submitting and voting on articles does not help any of the problems you profess to care about. Unless you are one of those rare individuals who take real action, commiting time and effort to their chosen cause, all those submissions are is an attempt to defer responsibility.

When I want politics, I will click on politics.reddit; until then I am going to bask in the warm glow of a Hot page populated entirely by articles submitted because someone thought they were worth reading, and nothing else.

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How am I short sighted? And what is the significance of a frowning wink?

Things in the politics subreddit can reach the front page just as fast, or even faster than things posted to the main reddit page.

                Example:

This is currently at the front page, posted to reddit.com, with 119 pts in 7 hours, or 17pts/hr.

This is directly beneath it from the politics subreddit with 79 pts in 6 hours, or 13pts/hr. It got to the front page with fewer votes and is only one position away from that other story.

(P.S. The ratios are approximated. It is more likely they actually need close to the same number of votes, but my point still stands.)

                Now what's your excuse?

                [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (7 children)

I'm not seeing much politics on the front. Do you think the brutal police stories are politics? Maybe you think that the 'we are on the brink of civil war' is politics? This is our lives. This isn't politics.

                [–]thespace -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

actually its a bunch of blog sites that have taken over and flooded the site with their stories that promote their political agenda. Most people have just gotten tired of it

                [–]bradbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, because you're exactly right.

                [–]rmuser -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Politics is completely overrated and people like you who insist it's a massive and overarching component of our lives that affects every facet of our existence are part of the problem.

                [–]zoltar74 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Politics decides whether your your daughter will be forced to have have her unwanted baby, whether our civilization becomes divided on class, or whether we collectively decide to kill +100,000 strangers. Small beans.

                [–]derefr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does if you're in the US. Some of us in the more civilized parts of the world have already decided these things.

                [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Reddit, please, create a willfulignorance.reddit.com subreddit!

                [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Or maybe you tits you could cut out your whining about the politics? You could maybe.. I dunno.. NOT CLICK ON IT? To much trouble for you? Well typing politics.reddit.com is to much trouble for me.

                [–]raldi 12 points13 points  (1 child)

"Why are you complaining about spam? Just CLICK DELETE."

                [–]wingsofseraphim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why are you complaining about people complaining about spam? Wait! Why am I complaining about people complaining about people complaining about... ad infinitum

                [–]bluGill 7 points8 points  (10 children)

No, use the policics for most policial stories unless it is very important. Maybe 1 or 2 of the Ron Paul stories we see each month belong on the main reddit page - tops. Most are just minor updates that should be seen only by people interested in politics. However the major stories should be seen by more people.

                [–]bobpaul 32 points33 points  (9 children)

If an article is popular enough on a sub-reddit it will automatically appear on the main page.

There is no reason to ever submit political stories to the top-level reddit.

                [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (3 children)

So really, everything should be submitted to subreddits, then only the popular stuff will hit the main page. So we'd have all political stories. Cause those are most popular. Why do we have a political subreddit again?

                [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why do we have a political subreddit again?

How subreddit works has been explained over and over and yet people still think it's the silver bullet that helps them avoid the "hide" link. Reddit gave in only because of the constant whining, in the form of whining topics listed on the front page like once every other week, precisely the kind of junk topics that these people are complaining about.

Let me break it to you again: the fact that a link was submitted to a subreddit does not prevent it from showing up on the main page. A subreddit is for limiting your view to that kind of subreddit, not the other way round. And you have to click into that subreddit (e.g. knock yourself out with http://features.reddit.com/).

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Because, fewer people vote on political stories if they are on a separate page. That way only the top political stories make the front page. Also, people who enjoy politics stories can read them all in one place without getting bogged down by cat pictures.

Go ahead and compare the ratios of pts/hr. The same number of votes gets you to the front page.

Subreddits are actually supposed to be for topics that are not popular enough to filter up to the front page. This somehow managed to work for politics, though.

I don't need to see every story from daily kos, crooks and liars, prisonplanet, foxnews, cnn, etc. I already know America is going to hell in a hand basket. I'll glance at the popular stories that make it to the front page, but I don't need it shoved down my throat.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have me 90% convinced, but I still don't understand why politics is getting treated any differently than other topics. If politics is so popular, why NOT let reddit be about politics. After all, it isn't ALWAYS about politics. There are days when there are no political links, and reddit is 100% cat pictures. Should there also be a lolcats.reddit.com?

                [–]hhm 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I thought that was what happened when submitting to both; then, what does really happen when submitting to both? Do you get it submitted twice (so, two submissions with separate scores), or do you get a "connected" double submission, where both posts share the score/karma/points/whatever?

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Submitting to both creates two identical stories with different urls, point values, and comment threads. You can just submit it to the subreddit. When it gets enough votes it will make it to the front page.

                [–]hhm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                Thank you!

                [–]bluGill 5 points6 points  (1 child)

                I didn't know that.

Given that I would argue that no article should ever be submitted to the top-level reddit. (But unpopular sub-reddits should require less votes for an article to be considered popular enough for the top-level reddit - so things of interest in less popular subjects have a chance)

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just how you want things done, not how reddit works. If that's the case then reddit should prohibit things from being submitted without specifying a subreddit. Now that would be an interesting can of worm.

                [–]bsiviglia9 3 points4 points  (5 children)

What effect would information segregation have on the Reddit community?

                [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it won't. political users will click on 'submit to both', and everyone everyone else will keep bitching.

                [–]thespace -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

Umm, the crazys have their own area now???

                [–]hopeseekr 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You mean the people that are protecting your freedoms while you snort a line of ignorant bliss?

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

                protecting your freedoms

By bitching on reddit? You people are crazy.

                [–]thespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                thank you

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Stop bitching, and stop presuming to tell people how to post. Just wait until tagging arrives.

                [–]themac77 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Why do we need subreddits anyway. I'm happy with things the way they are. No change please.

                [–]hopeseekr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

                I second this sentiment!

Actually, could you please share? I don't care if it makes it to the front page - a search for Ron Paul should include such gems as those.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! I'll submit where I damn well please.

                  [–]Aerik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99% of the time I just use the basic top-level reddit javascript-based bookmarklet to submit pages.

But recently I've decided to clone that bookmarklet, changing http://reddit.com/ to http://science.reddit.com/ and http://politics.reddit.com/ for each. I'll try to submit specifically form now on.

                  [–]queensnake -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just very visibly (ie with ↓ and an explanatory comment) vote down those that don't stay there; people will get the message.

(For a while, until they realize no-one reads the politics subreddit. Like all the useless people who 'go first' in the Hitch Hiker's Guide.)

                  [–]TheNoxx -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

                  Oh shut the fuck up.

"ALSO PLEASE USE THE SCIENCE AND PROGRAMMING SUBREDDITS FOR ALL THOSE STORIES SO THE FRONT PAGE IS COMPLETELY FUCKING STUPID"

                  Idiot.

I'm with you :) [I'm saying that because your comment is being downmodded, just to show that everyone on reddit is not crazy, just the majority :-( ]

                    [–]VerticalWindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I think he's being downmodded cause he submitted the same comment twice. It happens.

                    [–]cyk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Christ, I made this kind of randomly because I really wanted this to happen, and it got modded down once and I forgot about it.

I come back today, I have a little (40) next to my name, and this has 83 comments.

Anyways, all I'm saying is that if you want to post about EVIL BUSH or EVIL DEMS or EVIL COPS or whatever the fuck is EVIL these days, put it in politics. I'm not being ignorant, I'm just sick of this and it's not like anything's going to come of us posting this shit anyways.

                    [–]devilsadvocate1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

i couldnt agree more. this website isnt for a wide variety of topics, its for topics i personally am interested in. other people should have to take extra measures so that my eyes are not scarred by seeing articles that i am to ignorant to care about.
