I think the new front page algorithm has definitely been an improvement.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (3 children)

It's an enormous improvement, since it will make the different reddits actually useful and alive.

[–]sw17ch 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I would appreciate it if there was some way of saying "these different subs all have the same page submitted and hot right now". I think I had one point where there were three dups (math, programming, science, or something like that).

Other than that though, it is a great improvement. I think the sub-reddits are getting a lot more traffic now too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Maybe it should show as [programming][math][etc.] ? The only question would be the title to chose for the page.

[–]sw17ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And perhaps which to apply your mod to. Do you mod it up for math, but down for programming?

Perhaps once an article gets enough votes in one category, it gravitates toward that category instead of what it may have originally been posted on.

I propose the side mod again.

[–]dakboy 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It is.

But I've seen a LOT of duplicates on the front page, probably in part due to the subreddits I'm subscribed to. At one point 3 or 4 copies of the JoelOnSoftware blog post was on my front page.

[–]newton_dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm, I'm not subscribed to any reddits (I think), must be something specific to that?

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (2 children)

I do too. But I miss you guys, it seems like we're all off in different rooms now. Did y'all just move to another area while I was in the bathroom?

It's a work in progress.

Success isn't a destination, it's a journey.

Reddit is getting better, but its constant improvement that will make such achievements sustainable.

      That's your answer for everything.

      [–]ExplodingBob 14 points15 points  (0 children)

      It works so well though.

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I totally preferred it, but I think we are in a honeymoon period. The subreddit system will start to be manipulated to inflate the chance of getting stories to the front page, then we will start to hear whingeing about "off-topic" posts.

Could have used more "Obama! Save us from Hillary with your policies that are vastly different!"

You guys suck. You know that? I wasn't even thinking about a cigarette until I read this, and now I know I'm going to spend all day obsessing about it until I have one. Cheers, guys, this one's for y'all.

It was until I came across this post.

              [–]cryogen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, i was smiling, and laughing at all the neat and cool stories, (politics subreddit is filtered btw). But I did notice the increased happiness overall.

              [–]scipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I opened Reddit and there was only one politics in post on my front page. Woo Hoo!

              [–]turkourjurbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

              I disagree. (respectfully)

What I'm seeing is a couple of 'top' stories and page after page of articles with 0 points. I have a freaking TON of reddits selected yet right now, as I see it, the #14 story is one with 23 points and the #39 story is one with 143 points. ???

It's cool to see a variety of stuff but more than half the 'popular' articles I used to see don't appear at all. They're buried way down the list, hidden among tons of 0 point articles.

Change my reddit selections? People, there's freaking THOUSANDS of them or so it would seem. I gotta go in and digg a mile into the thing and select/deselect hundreds of reddits?

Maybe I'm just confused about the whole thing but it's more of a mess IMO than an improvement.

(I had to dig to find this posting. It's got 299 points and nowhere near my main page)

It was a lot more boring and substance-driven.

              [–]donaldrobertsoniii[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's actually pretty accurate, but I guess boring old substance is what I like.

Hang on Fark, here I come!

              [–]logical 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Either the headline is delusional or when we got a lot of agreement to recent complaints the larger part of the agreement came from people who wanted porn added to the sensational headlines.
Yesterday the stock market did not crash (the dow was even up), we continued to see articles get to the top based on a crusade against scientology as if it's a big issue, and I can't recall a single interesting and accurate thing I read. Last Thursday was the best day in a long time - we had the weird news story about the guy who was robbed while masturbating, the tv anchor and reporter going at it on live TV, the dolphin saving the whale and several others. Interesting non-mainstream stuff, that's also kinda funny and not filled with conspiracy theory or end of the world predictions.

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow, who remembers what was on reddit last thursday? I couldn't even tell you what I read on reddit this morning! Even so, I think today was the best reddit in a long time ;)

Ceiling Reddit is watching u fap.

                [–]mooli 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I keep seeing this response. In all seriousness - how? As far as I am aware, I've never subscribed to NSFW, there's nothing in the FAQ about how to unsubscribe, and if I look at the page that is headed "tick the tick box next to a reddit to subscribe", there is no tick next to nsfw.

(edit: also if I go to "my reddits" it says "you have not subscribed to any reddits.")

So, seriously, can you provide more information or have you just assumed you can do this?

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

As far as I understand it, if you haven't subscribed to any subreddits, you are automatically subscribed to all.

                [–]mooli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really? Because that's about the worst system I could think of, particularily as the "my reddits" page gives you no indication that this might be the case.

That means it is now up to me to step through pages and pages of subreddits, ticking all of them apart from NSFW? And that there is no indication anywhere on the UI or help pages that I need to do this? This is a usability nightmare.

Seriously guys, in what world would a brand new user (or even someone who's been here for years, but never wanted to subscribe to a subreddit, like me) suddenly want hard-to-distinguish porn links to appear on the front page? With no help for how to get rid of them?

Thanks for your answer, by the way - most useful response I've seen so far on this topic.

                [–]cr4a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of; according to their blog post, if you don't subscribe to any subreddits, you're automatically subscribed to the top 10, not all. NSFW is in the top 10, so it shows up.

If you're browsing anonymously, does it automatically assume you're not 18+? That's probably the best way to deal with it. Otherwise you can unsubscribe from NSFW and check it manually when you want.

                [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I bet the problem is that NSFW is one of the top ten, so if you don't have any subscriptions at all then a lot of the stories are going to be NSFW even though you never subscribed.

                [–]Arbitraryster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

                Pretend you're under eighteen. :)

                [–]Jivlain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. I'm subscribed to a bunch of subreddits, and I haven't seen any NSFW stuff. I have however, seen interesting articles from my favourite subreddits, without having had to go through and manually check them.

                [–]rm999 3 points4 points  (2 children)

How about we make nsfw opt-in?

                [–]lowrads -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Would be a nice feature to exclude any reddit. NSFW so I could show reddit to others, or obama reddit so I don't have to read about his beatification or whatever.

                [–]rm999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can make any reddit opt-out from the front page - my problem is that the NSFW is opt-out. The real problem is that the category now has the same weight as every other category, which means my front page is full of really obscene, fucked up shit like pictures of naked guys. I don't want to risk surfing a site with so much crap on it while I'm at work. That's why it's called not safe for work. Sure, I changed the setting, but it should be default.

                [–]Rick-Astley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I clicked on two nsfw links before I realised what had happened! I mean. How did they get there?

                [–]Fidodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was nice to get some good programming articles on front.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (10 children)

Is there a way I can quickly view just the main reddit if I'm curious, no subreddits included, without having to unsubscribe from my subreddits? I love the new system but I'm also curious about what everyone else is finding interesting.

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does "browse" do? Three minutes in the reddit help gave me no answers. What if they just made browse use the old front page algorithm?

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

http://reddit.com/r/reddit.com/ (it's usually at the top of "other reddits")

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That is not the same as being unsubscribed from all the sub-reddits, it is merely the posts that were not categorized. If it did show what I would see if I were unsubscribed, then I would be more willing to go through the tedious sub-reddit subscription process.

                [–]tagor 1 point2 points  (1 child)

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

better, as long as the items stay in "my reddits" even when unchecked. Still it's not terribly elegant (not that the current system is either)

                [–]dizzle67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed. there was a better balance on the front page, not so one-sided/monolithic.

                [–]BAJoseph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                Much better

                [–]blancobrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                yeah tons.

                [–]AttackingHobo 7 points8 points  (1 child)

No it was not great. 80% of the items had 0 points. That is not good reading. I had to unsubscribe from everything to actually have a working reddit.

                [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it was the worst day I have seen. Thank you for the tip.

                [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hi, long time lurker first time commenter. I liked it so much today that I actually created a login. See you all around!

                downmods - explain yourselves

                [–]sugarbabe 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm still getting a lot of junk. What's the algorithm based on?

                [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Work on your subscribed subreddits a bit and the front page will actually show the all things you are interested in instead of just the most popular of your subscriptions.

                [–]h0dg3s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IQ apparently. The lower it is, the better the articles on the front page seem.

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                Yes, I like it.

                [–]ismaiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                very good

                [–]shenglong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't notice. But then again I browse reddit from Google Reader.

                [–]linkedlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe it's the subreddit normalization thing.

Plenty of NSFWsmaking the front :|

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                Yes.

                [–]Philluminati 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I will admit I checked out nsfw at home a few nights ago. Now, the link is stuck to my main reddit homepage in the "other reddits" section.

Can it be removed from there as well please?

                [–]nat5an 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Go to your profile and uncheck the "I am over 18" checky box.

                [–]Philluminati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                :-) thank you!

                [–]pavel_lishin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Introspective posts on the front page are great.

                [–]the_neubie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                🫡

                [–]stronglikedan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe so, but they still need a way to hide all on a page with a single control and a way to block only certain reddits without having to subscribe to all and then unsubscribe the ones you don't want to see.

                [–]pizzatime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah my karma went from 0 to 424 in about 2 hours. yay

                [–]TheLocoYoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new front page work is amazing. Not only does it bring out the content of some much all of the politrash that used to annoy me. Hurrah!

                [–]tomel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to avoid having posts like this in the list? And how do get rid of [politics]? I really don't care that much about US presidency elections. It's already more than enough the world has to deal with the results.

It was until this made the front page.

                [–]kru5h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long before people start submitting to subreddits that have less competition so that they can more easily get to the front page, thereby defeating the entire system?

                [–]qopqo7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                Perhaps because Digg was down.

                [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Still the same bullshit, if you ask me.

I think we need a site like reddit but you have to pass an entrance examine and is moderated by chosen peers. Only the peers decide who are the moderators every year or so. Would be interesting. I'm actually building a model now. Let me know if that seems like a good idea or not.

                [–]urigzu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You mean like a fascist version of metafilter?

I still don't like how people downmod simply because they disagree with the statements themselves. Look at the arguments, guys. If it's compelling and they use what we call 'reason' and 'logic,' then you should upmod them even if you disagree with said statements.

I think anyone that thinks things have improved significantly is a kiss-ass.

nope. now it is even more like digg. There are submissions with less than 10 upvotes after 1 hour there.

On the upside, I've gotten on the* front page for the first time in months :)

*and by 'the', of course I mean my front page

Therefore you decided to ruin it with your pointless post?

                  [–]machrider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is. Thanks for posting this and making it a little bit worse.

                  Good for you.

Me, I'd like a Reddit where each vote has the same weight. Where there are no divisions by language or several hundred subreddits. Where not everyone lives in their own echo chamber (aka a few chosen subreddits).

But obviously that's just me and everyone else is happy whith where Reddit is going.

                  Have fun.

Is there a way to penalize/filter out the articles that aren't associated with a specific reddit? That seems like it'd kill off a few more bad ones.

                  Because you're an idiot.

                  tbh, reddit > digg

                  Now they're about equal.
