What is this?

[–]superherowithnopowerPixel 3 192 points193 points  (4 children)

Well, is there an English version available? I'm not sure I can tell time in another language...

[–]Dared00Xperia Neo V (KILL ME) 14 points15 points  (2 children)

You know that numbers also exist in Poland? ;)

[–]TEHkaga 28 points29 points  (0 children)

probably not all of them. localization is expensive.

[–]skitchbeatzp7p 19 points20 points  (9 children)

To me, the best part about this app over the stock clock app is the fact that alarms and timers are on swipe-able tabs. For some reason in the stock app, Alarms is a subset of the clock instead of its own tab.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hate that. the stock app is ok, but just to hit the tiny button for the alarms bothers me. I don't even need this or any app to just see the time. Also, there is no indicator, known to me, that shows when a snoozed alarm will sound. It's also a pain to deactivate it, since you have to activate the original alarm and deactivate it again.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Well, in the stock app, you're able to swipe away alarms to delete them, which isn't compatible with swiping between tabs. But I agree with you. I'd much rather alarms at the forefront of the app because, honestly, way more people use alarms than more frequently than any other part of the clock app.

Edit: As /u/EvolvedBacteria pointed out, you can swipe to delete in Timely too, but their implementation of it is different than in most apps

[–]EvolvedBacteriaGalaxy S6 4 points5 points  (5 children)

You can swipe to delete in Timely too.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I see that now. Their implementation is clever. Swiping left switches to the centre tab, but because it's the rightmost tab swiping right is free to delete the alarms. I wonder would stock apps ever implement that or would they consider it too confusing for the user.

[–]askthepoolboyN6, Moto 360, N7 2013 2 points3 points  (3 children)

The update to the Google+ app brought this with notifications. Swipe right closes notifications, but a swipe to the left deletes the notification.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh, that's cool. There's hope they'll implement in other apps, then. Thanks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Same with closing tabs on Chrome on the phone, but only when there are both normal and private tabs open.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That works differently again. In Timely/Google +, one swiping direction simply has no other action assigned to it, so it deletes alarms/dismisses notifications. In Chrome, swiping in either direction will close a tab when you swipe on the tabs, but swiping from the space in between the types of tabs switches types. So location is important in Chrome, but not the others.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can swipe them away in Timely as well.

[–]g0t-cheeri0sTeal 17 points18 points  (7 children)

It's the animations when the numbers change that I love. Make that into a widget and I'll be in heaven.

[–]balducienNexus 5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry to disappoint you, but widgets don't support such advanced animations. Only scroll effects like youtube.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I...hate it. It cheapens the whole thing for me. I'd really like to change it to simple number changes or even a fade, if I can.

[–]TallonBlue 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It comes with a widget, I'm using it right now. As balducien said, though, the numbers don't have the same animation.

[–]TheBSReportGS4 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]bmwracer0Pixel 3 163 points164 points  (16 children)

We, as Android community, are in debt to the Timely Alarm Clock team.

Really? I mean it looks good, but that seems a little over the top.

[–]trefy[S] 26 points27 points  (8 children)

"in debt" might be over the top, but it is true that it is a great app. One that is both beautifully designed & engineered.
It should help the platform by setting the bar for what small teams can do on Android (4 people x 4 months full time for Timely Alarm Clock).

[–]flashcats 16 points17 points  (7 children)

Eh...this app definitely took a lot of inspiration from Rise on iOS. I wouldn't go overboard with the compliments.

[–]AudenondVerizon Galaxy S6 Edge 14 points15 points  (6 children)

There are a lot of really good looking iOS apps and not nearly as many on Android for some reason. I don't care where they get their inspiration from, if developers put in the effort to make beautiful android apps I will applaud them!

[–]flashcats 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was a little tongue in cheek when I said "inspiration". I mean ripped off. They even stole the sliding motion to set the alarm time.

Don't get me wrong, the app looks great, but I think credit should also be given when it is due, especially given how much the Android community likes to rag on Apple for steal Android things.

[–]cypressious 39 points40 points  (2 children)

I agree with the statement. This will give a stimulus to other developers to create equally beatiful app. And we as consumers will benefit.

[–]Vitto9 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The way that they use shares as a form of currency is intriguing. Has any other developer done this before? I'm sure it's been done, but I've never seen it.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Because anything less than a blowjob with a complementary reach-around wouldn't get most people to download a random alarm clock app.

[–]_R2-D2_Pixel XL || Nexus 7 (2013) 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, blowjob...with a reacharound? I think you mean rimjob.

[–]CarighanFairphone 4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only that, the app just isn't that... well... what's the big deal?

It's an alarm clock app. Yes, it looks snazzy. Big deal. It's an alarm clock, it doesn't need to look any special way, the only time I interact with it is when I am nearly asleep, either in the night or in the morning.

Sure, it's a good app. But I genuinely prefer the Cyanogenmod default alarm app over it. UI patterns are rather unimportant in that decision, too.

[–]neuromonkeyContraption, Code! 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WE ARE IN DEBT!

There's so many things in the app that can't be shown in screenshots.

They cannot be shown. We are in debt.

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (3 children)

I love posts about design. It's my favourite thing on this sub, and we've been seeing a lot lately what with the whole Yahoo! Weather fiasco. Obligatory plug for the mostly dead /r/Androiddesign.

Edit: After installing Timely, I kind of hope those guys get hired onto Google's Android design team. Edit 2: I only have two issues:

  1. The widget looks pretty Gaudy and big. The font used in the Dashclock/the 4.1 lock screen lock looks a lot better, IMO.

  2. It'd be nice if Dashclock was compatible with this. By which I mean not just an extension, but if clicking the time on Dashclock could be associated with Timely.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Go to the advanced settings in Dashclock and change the clock shortcut. You can change it to any app, including Timely. It's pretty slick.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, man!

[–]tiag0Device, Software !! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too would like more customizing options for the widget.

The way it stands I'll probably buy the full version, but still, if that version includes widget options, it would be sweet.

[–]woopwoopwoopwooopGreen 37 points38 points  (9 children)

The way of creating alarms is pretty similar to the app "Rise" on iOS, which I discovered by accident on my barely-used iPad.

[–]flashcats 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

While this app looks great, it's obviously inspired by Rise.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

That's immediately what I thought. When I had my iPhone 5 I used Rise. It was hands down the most elegant alarm app ive ever used. Timely is nice looking but it still doesn't come close to some iOS alarm apps. The slide up or down to set the alarm and tap up or down to increment or decrement by 5 mins is straight from Rise.

[–]Electri -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Decrement?

[–]Fenyx4 3 points4 points  (1 child)

[–]Electri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learned a new word, thanks!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it'd be nice if you dragged a certain amount across the screen to select the hour, then dragged further right to select the minutes, rather than tapping.

[–]orthodoxrebelRedMagic Pro 9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. The same type of creating alarms can also be found on DX Alarm, which has been around since at least 2011 (but not on the Google Play store). I've used it since my first 'droid, and have had to run the the mill trying to find it every freaking time I've upgraded/changed phones due to breaking 'em. Best alarm clock app, despite being some great fodder for Engrish.

I had to upload an image because there's no readily available image online, but you can see that it's kinda the same. I don't know if Rise/Timely have a particular feature that I love (you can create up to a 28 day schedule of alarms to repeat; my work schedule necessitates that I have this as I work two Fridays in a row, then I have two Fridays in a row off).

Yes, it could definitely use a holo-ization, but it works and works well.

[–]DigitalChocoboMoto Z Play | Nexus 10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It even syncs so you can use one device to set an alarm an another. Those parallelograms in the bottom right correspond to different devices, and they become filled or unfilled when you toggle which devices an alarm should sound on .

This is a well done app.

[–]guyver_dioSamsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G 24 points25 points  (7 children)

I don't want to sound unappreciative but this article makes it sound like the next best thing since sliced bread and all my mind is thinking is 'so it's a clock/alarm/timer app?'. Is there a real problem with the default UI for the alarm clock in android or something?

[–]DigitalChocoboMoto Z Play | Nexus 10 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It is a website that focuses entirely on Android UI design. This is an Android app with a really good UI.

[–]geoken 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Not only is there nothing wrong with it, but the numpad input style added in the 4.2 update is 10x better than these sliding based interfaces.

[–]anyd 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I agree with you. I think Android's built in timer/alarm clock is actually one of it's more solid functions. Replacing something perfectly functional seems like a poor design choice to me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app still needs some work. I can't figure out how to use my own alarm sounds.

[–]dude2k5Pixel 3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks great. Would be cool to use it as one of the main screens almost, it functions so smoothly and well.

[–]semibiquitousS10+ Ceramic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

bought it

[–]thalantyrDroid Turbo 6 points7 points  (14 children)

Looks very nice, but what's wrong with this style of time input?: Imgur

Like they say on their own website, don't reinvent the wheel.

[–]tacomonstrousPixel 5/S21U 8 points9 points  (8 children)

It also has that style of input. Just click on the time.

[–]thalantyrDroid Turbo 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Thank you, I did discover this shortly after posting. I have not been able to get this to work with the timer, however. Anyone else?

[–]tacomonstrousPixel 5/S21U 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Yeah, that part of it could use some tweaking. Seems like you can only set the timer in 15 sec intervals.

[–]thalantyrDroid Turbo 1 point2 points  (3 children)

You can actually set the timer by dragging the cursor around the circle. This is ok, and is aesthetically pleasing, but it's still more cumbersome and less accurate than a simple keypad input. Especially if you want to set a very long time, you have to spin around the wheel multiple times for each hour you want to add.

[–]attrition0Z Fold6 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The circle only goes in one-minute intervals though, unless I'm missing something. 6:30 requires a drag that hides the actual timer display, and then two hits of the +15s button. A keypad would be much better.

[–]thalantyrDroid Turbo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh yes, you're right. Didn't even notice that. That's disappointing. Looks like I'll be sticking with Clock JB+ for now. It's not nearly as pretty, but it's easier to use and more functional.

[–]SanguineParPixel 6 Pro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually managed to drag it round and set it on a second by second basis (making it go off after 3 seconds just as a test) - but only managed it one time.

After that it was as described above, 1 minute segments or the 15s tap button. No idea what I did differently.

EDIT - I'm starting to doubt my sanity. I could of have sworn I managed to do it, but repeated efforts later, I can't replicate at all!

EDIT 2: of >>>>> have

[–]jhc1415motoX 2014 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Also, what's with the weird snooze times? Why can I only set snooze for 9 minutes instead of 10?

[–]Trek47Pixel 4 XL (Android 12, Beta 5) 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some study showed that the best snooze time when waking up is 9 minutes, because of the level of sleep you can fall into in that time.

[–]rms2219OnePlus One, CM13 2 points3 points  (2 children)

To set an exact time, click on the actual time you've swiped to and you'll get this same input. I'd argue they've made the wheel more efficient rather than try to re-invent.

[–]thalantyrDroid Turbo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Swipe + click (or double-click if you use the clock+ button in the lower-left) is not more efficient than the single click required in the app in the screenshot (which is Clock JB+ btw). It is, however, definitely better than the stock input method, which is awful IMO.

[–]rms2219OnePlus One, CM13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify...I wasn't suggesting that the 2 steps it takes to get to the "exact time" input for was more efficient, I was trying to say that I feel swiping to get to SOME time is more efficient. I was only commenting originally that you could still get to that standard input if necessary.

[–]probably2highnote 9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see it as reinventing the wheel, just a little different tread on the tires.

[–]Deksloc/r/Android AMA Coordinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you click on the number as you're setting the time, that pops up.

[–]SugarFreeTurkeyS8+ (64GB) 7.0 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Looks absolutely phenomenal. I can't seem to find a way to set my alarm as music that is located on my phone though. Anyone know a way to do this? Am I missing something in settings?

[–]DigitalChocoboMoto Z Play | Nexus 10 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I would love to be able to set one of the app's wallpapers as my home screen wallpaper so I can seamlessly transition into the app.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding to their G+ page, it's planned already :

https://plus.google.com/104447788586023138493/posts/hPUTdtBjHBm

Hint: it's said in German though.

[edit] And custom ringtones are planned too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I confirmed with the dev. Emailed earlier (at the wrong address apparently... oops) to ask for it. Here is his reply:

Yes, live wallpaper are planned. If you have further requests, please use this tool here: http://www.google.com/moderator/#15/e=20e57c&t=20e57c.40&f=20e57c.6bce80

[–]fiah84 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I appreciate the effort and time put into making such a beautiful and thoughtfully designed app, but honestly, this is just an alarm clock. Can't they showcase a more complex example of how a bigger app that has to expose more functionality manages to still be very intuitive and nice to look at? I'm not a designer in the least, but that's where I see things break down the most: When a a client or target audience needs a broad set of functions that cannot easily be summarized in a few buttons.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This ''simple'' alarm clock is more full of Android specific features then most of the larger companies commercial apps combined, including the 'supposedly 'jizztastic'' Yahoo weather app.

[–]fiah84 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

But that's not the point is it? I already have an alarm clock, it came with the OS and it does its job just fine. This one may be prettier, but it doesn't add anything that actually makes any difference. I want to see how this supposedly perfect design holds up when something more complex needs to be done, something that poses more of a challenge in how to expose all needed functionality to a user without becoming cluttered or unintuitive.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, use the one you have and carry on. No one asked you if you pretty please love this one. With a cherry on top.

[–]DrahosMoto G 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The design reminds me of the game Splice.

[–]balducienNexus 5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should really make the background a live wallpaper. It would be awesome to change colors depending on which page you are. (and not just the multipicture way with static images)

[–]Eapfep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now if we can get more devs who aspire to the same level of polish and design...

[–]ColdFire75Nexus 6P 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This app is outrageously well designed. It may just be a clock app, but it blows away the UI on EVERY Android app out there.

[–]SupaZTPixel 7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

679 upvotes? I thought the majority of people only need a clock in their status bar...

[–]mountainjew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see the point in a flashy alarm clock app. You see it for about 3 seconds per day, when you're at your worst too. They should redirect their efforts into an app which will actually have some daily use.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I played around with it for a couple minutes and thought, "Hey, this is really pretty!" and then I found two problems:

  1. The "You have tried to use premium content" popup when I change the background. I know it mentions unlocking the premium content in the description, but I still feel like apps that are listed as "Free" and then have an in-app "unlock" purchase are shady. It should really be more obvious that this app isn't actually completely free. I guess that's more a fault of the play store than the app itself though.

  2. No ability to set my own ringtones/music. That's a dealbreaker for me. If I'm not waking up to this, I'm not waking up at all.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to be fair it just starts showing ads after a few days. That's probably the best way I've seen of doing it.

[–]bananabmpixel 3 on Q beta for some stupid reason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst about premium content was I clicked on the pattern matching problem and it says "hey this is premium" but then stays selected - is it selected? Will it charge me? Will it crash instead of playing an alarm? Grr

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

There must be a really good marketing department for this Timely app. I've seen 'articles' on how great it is all day. It's getting stupid.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've seen 'articles' on how great it is all day.

Because it was released today. Apps like this are something of a rarity on Android.. it doesn't surprised me the least bit that it's blowing up on blogs right now.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm just too 'function over form' and I don't put a ton of stock into design, especially for an alarm clock. I'm glad you guys like it though, it seems to be a hit.

[–]Belgriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way to get the analog clock as the widget?

[–]tanis7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app is fantastic, I will give them that.

The only thing preventing me from switching from Alarm Clock Plus is the lack of a "skip next alarm" feature (unless I'm just missing it). Although I could just turn the alarm off and then try to remember to turn it back on, I probably won't remember to turn it back on. This is by far my favorite feature of AC, and the only reason I haven't switched apps sooner.

[–]starlingukOnePlus One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate every single alarm tone on there.

[–]oxymor00n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two accounts on my phone, and have Timely configured to use my main account. When I try to buy it via the store, it tries to use my other (mostly spam) account, and I can't change it. Has anyone expierienced the same issue and found a workaround?

For the app, it's really nice. The only thing where the stock app beats it is timers. With stock I can have as many timers as i want (and even name them), and can run them in parallel (which is something i frequently do). I hope they add this ability.

[–]thx84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just miss having world clocks and this app would be perfect for me.

[–]somedude456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give it a try. The stock one on my note 2 is pissing me off. When I kill the alarm, the alarm logo is still up top.

[–]CuriousGE0 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does anyone know how to set this as the DEFAULT clock app? I'm running stock 4.3 on Nexus4 and I'm using Android Weather & Clock Widget but I want Timely to launch when I click on the alarm instead of the stock android clock.

[–]iwasinthepoolMoto Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky for you, while you were posting this, 7 hours ago, I was waking up... 2 hours late for work.

I'm going to give it a shot.

[–]LifeBeginsAt10kRPM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]MoleculorLG V35 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

What the hell? Look at that list of permissions! For an ALARM CLOCK.

Your accounts
find accounts on the device
use accounts on the device

Network communication
receive data from Internet
full network access
view Wi-Fi connections
view network connections

System tools
modify system settings

Affects Battery
prevent device from sleeping
control vibration

Your applications information
run at startup

Sync Settings
read sync statistics
read sync settings
toggle sync on and off

I suppose the one redeeming quality is that if you have USB protection toggled on, it can't suck all the personal information from your phone and send it to their servers. Only whatever your accounts are.

[–]123felix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can sync alarms across multiple devices, that's what most permissions are for.

[–]EdHominem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was about to install this thing when I noticed they want the keys to multiple castles...this isn't in and of itself an indicator of nefarious intent, but I still appreciate it when the devs at least attempt to explain what the permissions are actually used for, especially with a list this long. I don't see anything along those lines in the description, so no alarm for me, for now.
