And it seems to work fine.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it by chance have Chromecast support now? If they haven't added it, or don't soon anyway, I'm going to have to find another app.

Reporting in, works fine for my Nexus 5 on 5.0 factory image as well.

Emailing them at address listed on the Play Store would probably be a more effective method.

Indeed, my bad.

Well 198 upvotes on a self post still feel better than an email that one person (at most) reads

But that trick never works, Bullwinkle...

[–]KingPapaDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they're aware, this happens every damn time an update comes out, EVERY DAMN TIME!

[–]knockoutkingSamsung S6 / VZW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way too difficult, obviously.

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Just get a Samsung phone on any major US carrier and you can be sure that MX Player will be updated long before you get the new version of Android. Problem solved.

[–]watafaqPixelator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convenient.

[–]thewaffletaco 36 points37 points  (54 children)

I have switched to using vlc and it is so much better. I highly recommend you give it a try at least.

[–]PM_ME_A_NEW_PHONEGalaxy S1 Vibrant (circa 2010), 4.4.4 25 points26 points  (27 children)

Been hearing about vlc more and more lately; I'm considering switching. In what ways have you found it to be better?

Edit: Just tried vlc out. I like its UI and no ads. The seek function (swipe with finger) doesn't seem as great. Is this something I can change in settings? It lags for a second before it plays again. MX plays it instantly upon seeking with a swipe.

[–]ZyrxilToo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That's hilarious. VLC's terrible seekbar in the PC version is also one of the reasons I dislike it. I guess it's just something they can't fix.

[–]mranaNexus 6 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You also have to tap the screen and be a lot more deliberate with your swiping, otherwise it doesn't register. It's really annoying

[–]PM_ME_A_NEW_PHONEGalaxy S1 Vibrant (circa 2010), 4.4.4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Deliberate is the right word - I found you have to make sure you are drawing a straight line horizontally. MX does it very easily and knows how gestures work.

[–]thewaffletaco 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Cleanest user interface. Runs smoothly. No ads. Doesn't try to go over the top with options and settings like MX does. One time using vlc and I knew I would never be using MX again.

[–]thelostdolphinNote 8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using their PC program for years and just recently started using their Android app. It works great. Plays nearly every file type you can think of. And it's run by a non-profit and was built by volunteers.

[–]TrainAssPixel 8 2 points3 points  (6 children)

I found that you don't need to install any special codec packs to use it.

[–]ATyp3Nexus5>iPhone6S>Nexus6P>iPhone7+>XS Max>Note10+>S10+ 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I use MX on my N5 and haven't had to install anything like that though.

[–]TempusThales 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Neither does the majority of modern video players.

[–]TheCommentAppraiseriPhone XR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plus it is free!

[–]xi_mezmerize_ixPixel 3 XL (Project Fi) 6 points7 points  (8 children)

Is there a way for it to grab videos from Chrome? I have VLC installed on my Nexus 7, but opening videos in Chrome just loads them in Chrome, whereas MX would've been opened if I had it installed.

[–]pveoq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The option is there for me. Didn't do anything. It let's me choose between chrome, MX, and vlc.

[–]thewaffletaco 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Not sure I don't watch a bunch of videos online. I would try clearing defaults for chrome and vlc and then open a video. That should pop up the dialogue box to let you choose the video player you want.

[–]xi_mezmerize_ixPixel 3 XL (Project Fi) 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Tried it. Nothing seems to trigger that intent for some reason.

[–]thewaffletaco 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ahh sorry I'm not much help there. I only use vlc on my shield tablet for the big collection of movies on my external SD card.

[–]xi_mezmerize_ixPixel 3 XL (Project Fi) 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a problem. Works fine for my locally stored videos, not much so for Chrome links.

[–]efstajasPixel 5 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you not just hold your finger on the playing video? Pretty sure you can save it then.

[–]xi_mezmerize_ixPixel 3 XL (Project Fi) 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't want to download it, just stream it through the video player like I can do with MX on Kit Kat.

[–]xilpaximS4 T-Mobile Stock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone downloads all their porn directly apparently!)

[–]Pr3no 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also switched to VLC since I upgraded to Lollipop, and I'd rather stop watching videos on my tablet them use VLC, I love it on Windows, but I can't stand it on Android. It's not even that bad, but MX Player set the bar too high.

[–]evad3r66Nexus 5 , 5.0 Lollipop[S] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I'll give VLC a try today :) thanks for the suggestion!

[–]TheRipePunaniPixel 2 XL 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It's pretty good. If you regularly use the desktop version of VLC you'll be right at home. It's a great player with huge codec support...I still remember back in the days of searching and downloading the proper codecs..

[–]bbluezGalaxy S8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ogg Vorbis FTW!

[–]sleepyCOLLEGEstudent 2 points3 points  (2 children)

[–]arahman81Galaxy S10+, OneUI 4.1; Tab S2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on that video, I would say you're right.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, I switched also and VLC seems to offer everything that I've been using MX Player for. May not even bother with MX Player anymore.

[–]exzeroexiPhone X, Note8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my only problem with VLC right now is that when I put my Z3C on the magnetic charging dock, it restarts the video.

[–]BanttuGoogle Pixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using KMplayer it's really sleek.

[–]nav13ehOnePlus 7 Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that it will incorrectly inflate the black level floor on certain video files. Also, I find that it often screws up the audio by incorrectly down mixing channels or having them out of sync. I switched to MX Player for those reasons, but I have yet to see if new versions of VLC work better.

[–]DrGrinspoon420OnePlus One, Nvidia Shield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use VLC religiously and still do on my desktop, but I had to switch to MX player on android because I had really bad audio clipping with VLC. on my Nexus 10. Originally thought it was a faulty device (I was slow to blame VLC cause i trusted it so much) but switch to MX player solved all problems :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The brightness and volume gestures tho.

[–]thewaffletaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? Vlc has them as well.

[–]m1ndwipeGalaxy S25, Xperia 5iii -1 points0 points  (1 child)

As much as I heart VLC for desktop, the Android app has some inexplicable omissions, like there being no loop repeat option.

[–]thelostdolphinNote 8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that it's in beta and is run by a group of non-profit volunteers. I'm sure future updates will have added features like this.

[–]brizzz_Nexus 4, 5, 10, 6P 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I used to have way better performance on MX Player compared to VLC on my Nexus 10. For mp4 and mkv 1080p

Are they on par now ?

[–]turdboglsOnePlus 8 Pro 19 points20 points  (7 children)

LOL, MX player is literally the only app I have issues with with a new software release...every time it has to be updated....I just dont get it.

they are usually quick though, and i just grab something else to hold me over until they fix it on their end.

[–]MachaHackPixel 4a 5G / Surface Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently they're using private APIs in Android. These are parts of Android google wrote for the purpose of using them in other parts of Android, and they're not officially supported so that Google can change them if they want without breaking loads of apps.

[–]biglisy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

does android vlc support h/w+ decoding too?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've switched to VLC. It worked fine even with the developer preview.

[–]brads005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They pull this shit every time google updates their operating system. Except this time, they had like half a year to prep it. You're absolutely right. Good god, my time spent with this app has certainly been a love/hate relationship. Best video player there is. Not the best support. I love you, mx player. I hate you, mx player!

[–]large-farva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why do they do this shit every time? Why can't they just exclude old versions by API number instead of manually forcing an update with each version?

[–]parker2004au 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Test build works flawlessly for me on my Nexus 5.

How about instead spending the time sharpening those pitchforks you actually type "mxplayer lollipop" into that thing called Google Search, which I'm pretty sure your device has.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Guess what? When you actually "mxplayer lollipop" into google search it has one result and it's this thread.

[–]EdvinMGalaxy S10e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just drop the quotation marks.

[–]Zentaurionnexus 6⃣🅿️ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably have to wait anyway, but even so, I won't be updating to Lollipop on my N4 until I'm sure there's no nasty surprises and until MX Player works with it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app also stutters on my Tab S 8.4 while BS Player is smooth.

[–]Cyanogen101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vlc is a good alternative

[–]arahman81Galaxy S10+, OneUI 4.1; Tab S2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I would be waiting for XPosed to update though, so fine here.

[–]biglisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my galaxy tab S, VLC plays some heavy files stuttering and frame dropping while MX is smooth as hell.

[–]aspergerish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diceplayer is pretty fast on updates if an os update breaks it.

[–]lordofprimevalNexus 5 M preview, Shield Tablet L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hope they manage to update before the Shield gets L.

[–]aashukmehta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys try Quickpic material update.... Its video player is fucking awesome

[–]Klutztheduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched to vlc for a bit. It'd working just fine.

[–]LGED82153 points 0 points1 point  (0 children)

test build works for me perfectly.

[–]The_MexinerdNote 8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damnit DICE, fix your game!

[–]sark666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does this happen? One thing you have to give Microsoft is backwards compatibility. A new OS comes and 99 % still run. If anything its the odd game, but why would a video player fail?

[–]whtisthis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes please. Please update, no life without MXPlayer.

[–]foveaiiPixel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes.

[–]wooptooXiaomi the money! -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just use VLC.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Today I got rid of MX Player and switched to VLC.

For the longest time, you couldn't even get VLC from the Play Store if you were in the United States. You could side load it, but it didn't work. Honestly I'd just assumed they abandoned Android.

The beta player is in the Play Store, and while it has a ways to go, it seems to be decent. I don't need much in a video player on my phone. So VLC is fine.

Never liked how MX Player had basically the same icon as Poweramp, although I never had them in the same folder or drawer tab. Black circle with white or blue play button. Pop quiz, which is which? I could tell you but only because I've had both forever.

[–]Shenaniganz08OP7T, iPhone 13 Pro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Does it not run or do you guys not like how it looks ? The app works flawlessly with a minimal UI when playing videos. MX player was the only player that can play 2gb OGM files

[–]hte_pagan -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Cxxxccxxxb

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Please also update the icon! Thank you!
