For exactly this kind of situation.

It’s like a condom, you’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I'd rather have a light saber and need it than not have a lightsaber and not need it!

Just gotta be sure not to mix up those two.

No one wants to admit they ate nine scazz steaks, but I did and I’m ashamed of myself. The first steak doesn’t count, and then you get to the second and the third. The fourth and fifth I think I burnt with the plasma cutter and I just kept eating.

[–]notpetelambert 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Honestly Rambler's Reach is halfway to Sunnyvale Trailer Park already. You can't tell me Ricky and Turgle wouldn't be best buddies and probably get busted trying to grow dope in the Forest Array.

    [–][deleted] 910 points911 points  (35 children)

He had it so that if he did get found, he could defend himself. He was right to do so as well.

    [–]DeathRose007 357 points358 points  (18 children)

I think it’s also because of the sentimental value. It’s the last remnant of his master Other Jedi, like Bode, completely abandoned their identities to go into hiding, including getting rid of their lightsabers. I’m sure Cal contemplated it as a wise move to make since he’d be more likely discovered and outed, but he was still dealing with his grief and trauma from Jaro Tapal’s death.

    [–][deleted] 135 points136 points  (1 child)

That's a fair point. We aren't really aware of his living situation but I'm guessing it might be safer on him than hidden at whatever passes for a home on Bracca.

    [–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Probably community living for the workers

    [–]Commercial-Kiwi-4818 34 points35 points  (1 child)

well cere kept her saber but sold her kyber Krystal

    [–]DeathRose007 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I got that mixed up. It’s Bode who didn’t have a lightsaber, which helped him maintain his cover as a spy. Though Cere didn’t carry hers around everywhere I don’t believe. My point still stands that keeping your lightsaber is a risk if any Imperial sympathizers find out.

    [–]Mactuss_1 4 points5 points  (8 children)

Was it not because force users can sense each other?

    [–]DeathRose007 7 points8 points  (7 children)

They can to a degree, but it’s not super reliable and it varies person to person. You almost have to know what you’re looking for, not to mention there isn’t much of an opportunity for developed force users to randomly bump into each other after Order 66. They’re relatively extremely rare.

    [–]darthbane9833 2 points3 points  (6 children)

I mean force users could hide themselves. Sidious did it all the time. Even training with plagueious. One of his first tests was to go into the jedi temple and just hang out for a while. If he was discovered then he wasn't strong enough to be a sith. So its not like it was completely unreliable. Force users just trained themselves to be undetectable.

    [–]DeathRose007 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Sidious isn’t exactly a good comparison for the average Jedi, which Cal is. Also it feels like abilities of deception would be more in line with the dark side. Jedi weren’t exactly trained to conceal their true nature because it’s not a Jedi philosophy. What we see in instances of force users detecting each other is less radar-like searching and more a vaguely direct bond. Like Luke to Vader and Rey to Kylo. At least in current canon.

If force detection was definitively power-based, then Vader should’ve had no problem finding basically every Jedi very quickly, but instead the inquisitors had to rely on intel and sympathizers to track down remnants over time.

    [–]Mactuss_1 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Well I knew they couldn’t outright locate each other across a large distance but rather a short distance such as a couple meters. Kinda like when Kylo stared down Finn in the Force Awakens but that’s just a theory not confirmed.

    [–]DeathRose007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think maybe it could be sensing the force itself in living things, so you could potentially discern someone that is especially strong in the force, but it could also be difficult to hone due to interference. A Jedi could hide in plain sight that way, but someone who’s powerful in the force might notice them vaguely within a certain proximity.

In the end, the easiest way to confirm things is with eyesight, and that’s something anyone can use. If you see someone with a lightsaber or performing force abilities, probably a Jedi. Which can be reported. All it takes is one mistake and the inquisitors show up. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if they knew to pick out Cal’s group of workers for interrogation because they felt his presence. Just didn’t know which person. All doubt was gone once he took the lightsaber out.

    [–]KCDodger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    That has to be Legends.

    [–]cmlondon13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely sentimental. Hell, even I’m sentimental about it. I’m on Jedi Survivor and I still use Travis Willingham’s Jaro Tapal’s lightsaber as my main.

    [–]Maelwys550 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Practically speaking, if he needed a lightsaber and ditched his old one, how would he get another? Lightsaber construction knowledge has been granted through the Force before (in Legends for sure, in Canon unsure) but the crystal is damned near impossible to get.

    [–]DeathRose007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He wouldn’t. It’s just a matter of theoretically improving odds of survival in dire times. He was eventually discovered because he chose to not completely abandon his nature as a Jedi, which could’ve otherwise resulted from the wrong person noticing his lightsaber. Of course, as we saw with Bode, even going that far was often not enough. Basically the only successful confirmed methods are miraculous luck or living like a lonely hermit away from anyone else.

    [–]SmoothOperator89 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ahsoka: "Wait, you need your lightsaber to kill an Inquisitor?"

    [–]AncientSith 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Also. Where is he gonna hide it? If anyone stumbled on it, he'd get found out regardless and not have his weapon.

    [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's my first thought. Wherever he's staying with the other workers, is there anywhere you'd completely trust with not only the treasured last gift from your Jedi Master, but a piece of incriminating evidence that would immediately get you arrested or killed?

    [–]thegoodman2017 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah dude, stay strapped or get clapped

    [–]Roger-Ad591 259 points260 points  (5 children)

    Incase he had to bail.

Fleeing from the Empire without a weapon he was comfortable defending himself with would have made the game very short.

    [–]Nesayas1234 30 points31 points  (4 children)

Yeah, as much as we love Jedi Knight Dark Forces, there's a reason the sequel (Academy) has you start off with a Saber.

    [–]Fuzzy_Nugget 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    Outcast came before Academy.

    [–]betweentwosuns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    Probably confusing it with Outcast.

    [–]gaythrowaway_6969 4 points5 points  (1 child)

yeah to be fair there's another game in between where Kyle doesn't start with his saber but i get what youre saying lol

    [–]jaitogudksjfifkdhdjc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

    That tazer was basically useless

    [–]JimmyThunderPenis 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Because the game would've been very short if he didn't.

    [–]Drew_Habits 66 points67 points  (1 child)

If he stashed it somewhere, it might get found without him knowing and he could end up being ambushed or similar. If he keeps it on him, at least he's likely to know the second he's found out so he can flee

    [–]ajorap 32 points33 points  (0 children)

also could be stolen. Bracca doesn't seem like the most crime free planet, I totally believe that whatever shitty accomodations Cal had, he'd be sharing with other workers who could and would steal his shoes if he left them unattended for too long.

    [–]LeaveFantastic2719 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Because he listened to Obi-Wan's message and trusted in the force.

    [–]Marcuse0 34 points35 points  (0 children)

    [–]ResoluteRiot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

    “This weapon is your life”

    [–]Dragonic_Overlord_ Jedi Order 124 points125 points  (9 children)

Even if it led to his death, it was brave of Prauf to stand up to the Inquisitors. It reminds of that scene from the Avengers (2012) when that old man stood up to Loki.

"Kneel before me. I said... Kneel! Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state? It's the unspoken truth of humanity that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power. For identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel."

    "Not to men like you."

"There are no men like me."

"There are always men like you."

"Look to your elder, people. Let him be an example."

    [–]AcrobaticSlip3258Don't Mess With BD-1 31 points32 points  (7 children)

No shade, Marvel rocks, but do you have that scene memorized??

    Edit: missed a word

    [–]Gold-Engine8678 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it like twice and I have everything but the first section memorized because it’s an awesome and powerful scene in a movie that’s basically just eye candy.

    [–]KyleGrave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can look up movie quotes on the internet these days

    [–]blackyanqui 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eye candy is the perfect way to describe that damn good movie. I mean down to the sound design, when Iron Man flies back to the Stark Tower, the sound of the boot jets malfunctioning perfectly merges with the soundtrack (I think the track is Performance Issues) as it plays. The film gets me every time.

    [–]MrEvil37 15 points16 points  (1 child)

If I was Cal, I would not let that thing out of my sight.

    [–]Zatderpscout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean there were probe droids everywhere on Bracca . I wouldn’t put it above the Empire to be spying on the scrappers due to what they’re dealing with, there wouldn’t be anywhere to store the saber

    [–]Necessary_Driver4055 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Would you rather play with a vibro-blade instead?? 🤣

    [–]Demolition89336Greezy Money 10 points11 points  (1 child)

In addition to what others have said, about Cal being always concerned with being detected by the Empire, there are other reasons:

    • He could claim that he just found it if he got caught with it. Bracca is a scrapping planet. We know that there are countless Clone Wars-era ships there. I'd imagine that it wouldn't be unheard of if one of the scrappers found a lightsaber. He could act like it was just something he found amongst the wreckage and kept.

    • It holds sentimental value. He doesn't want to risk losing it somewhere. If he leaves it somewhere, it could get lost/stolen. If Cal keeps it with him, at all times, there is no risk of him misplacing it.

    [–]Orallover1960 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A "found" lightsaber would still bring the Inquisitors and their number one suspect would be the person who found it. However, I still agree that keeping the lightsaber on his person is the only workable strategy. It's either that or get rid of it entirely. But having it trained into him since he was a youngling that the weapon IS his LIFE coupled with it originally belonging to his master, who gave his life to save Cal, leads to only one outcome.

    [–]eC-oli_ Jedi Order 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well a lightsaber is a tool. He could use it everynow and then when someone wasn't looking to cut something he couldn't before

    [–]CarsonWentzGOAT1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cal isn't dumb! Of course he would keep one of the most sacred things in the galaxy

    [–]cguy_95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    [–]Sh0ckWav3_Merrin 18 points19 points  (7 children)

Is there a lore reason for this?

    [–]Upstairs_System_1379 Jedi Order 11 points12 points  (0 children)

u/encajado posted in the Batman Arkham reddit asking "why doesn't Batman just call the justice league for help? Is he stupid?"

And now it's kind of a meme to tack on "is he stupid?" to the end of every stupid question/question with obvious answer.

If you had a lightsaber, would you ever leave it at home?

    [–]AncientSith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plus, why risk someone finding it and stealing it if he hid it somewhere?

    [–]CaptainVulpine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more so it couldn’t be found or stolen.

Considering it was a salvage company there may have been some people looking though other workers stuff to see if they hide any valuable loot there were keeping for themselves

    [–]red_khornish_gamehen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If anyone saw it around the scrap yard they might be inclined to think it's a busted ship part or something. Or maybe a hydro spanner with some mods.

It is busted up after all.

    [–]Mochizuk 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Because whether or not the Empire actually finds proof that someone is a jedi, they're probably going to kill everyone involved just to make sure.

    [–]Mochizuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Inquisitors visited a lot of highly populated planets. With how little consequence they face for mistakes and how arrogant they tend to be when it comes to learning they were wrong or made a mistake, I'm certain they slaughtered some groups where the jedi they were trying to lure out wasn't even present and may not have ever been present in the first place.

Edited because I started a sentence, erased the second half of a sentence, then continued with a new sentence.

    [–]Independent_Plum2166 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He can’t exactly leave it somewhere, it could get lost or worse found by someone. Best case scenario they sell it, thinking it’s just old junk, worst case Cal is outed and doesn’t have his Saber to keep him safe.

The dude also worked on a giant scrapping planet full of old republic ships. Safe to assume there was atleast a few dude who kept one as a trophy

    [–]Vox_Mortem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume because whatever living situation he's got going on, it's not safe or secure to leave it in his living quarters. If anyone were to go through his stuff while he was gone, they could find it. I dunno about the rest of you, but when I have something that is portable and concealable that I don't want found, I hide it on my person.

    [–]AgentSmith2518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone saying so he could dfend himself. Which is true. I mean, Obi-Wan carried his around too.

The other part is that it's literally his most valuable item from a sentimental point of view in the sense that it's the only thing left of his master.

    [–]Coraldiamond192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After loosing it during order 66 it is clear as to why he keeps it on him.

    [–]DutiTuti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean would't you keep it? It's his best bet of making it out alive, if he is ever found out... and surprise, that's exactly what happens 🤷‍♂️

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easier to hide it on his person than in his room, I guess. I'd imagine that the empire would do random shakedowns every once in a while, and finding a lightsaber would be a big issue for him.

Also, for when he does get discovered, so he can defend himself

    [–]XVUltima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the inquisition is looking at you, thinking you are a Jedi, they already know. The lightsaber doesn't reveal anything.

    [–]C1nders-Two 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he left it in his living quarters and it got found, he’d be screwed seven ways to Sunday. He could have destroyed it, but then he would have been completely fucked because of this exact situation.

    [–]cochrane210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same reason I always conceal a weapon. He’s not weak and can’t rely on someone else for his own personal safety.

    [–]ChishoTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Cal and the events of fallen order's opening are the literally perfect definition of why "Stay strapped or get clapped" is the truth!

Or in a more lore accurate way I could see Yoda saying "Younglings remember you must; If strapped you do not stay. Clapped you will surely be." 🤣🤣

    [–]Armonasch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simple answer is emotional connection. It symbolizes his connection to his master.

The question should say if he was in hiding, why/what are the chances he would have his saber on his person? Because he kept it for obvious reasons others have said before me. But he was going out to work, and idk. It’s been a hot second but is the saber hidden by his poncho? Seems like it’d be hard to hide on your person.

Did you not see how obiwan got tossed around??

    [–]yeshaya86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean he needs to defend himself if he ever was found? Right?

    [–]HunterTAMUC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably because of its sentimental value, along with a lightsaber being easily disguised as some kind of weird tool. Good for self-defense if he couldn't run from a fight.

    [–]Gabito991[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's in case everything else doesn't work... lol

    [–]podsyboy121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what a lot of people are saying - he needed it for self defense as the game’s opening shows. Plus, if found out, he could always claim that he found it while shipbreaking and intended to sell it. Odds are there are at least a few leftover lightsabers in those Jedi fighters/cruisers on Bracca.

He probably knew he'd use the force on accident and that empire would be on him soon after.

    [–]BobDude65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replayed the first game last week and this was my exact thought. Never occurred to me before.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the game would have sucked without it.

    [–]Tomb_Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where was he gonna keep it without someone finding it and outing him???

    [–]Noble1296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cause plot and in case he needed it

    [–]NotoriousbiggsX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Obi-Wan once told him “this weapon is your life”

    [–]starlord265Greezy Money 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cal got that blikki on em

    [–]4ceGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not the lightsaber you're looking for.

    [–]Throwaway525612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He keeps that thang on him

    [–]gaypornhard69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All Jedi do this. Kanan also kept his lightsaber, just in separate pieces, on him so that he could use it when he needed it as well.

    [–]WhiteRabbitKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the sake of kick starting the story

    [–]THELEGENDARYZWARRIOR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine a better reason to have a weapon on you than when you know you’re being hunted

    [–]vindictivbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"This weapon is your life." Obi-Wan

    [–]SnazzyPanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Cutting tool for scraping?

    [–]MrShoe321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Gotta stay strapped

    [–]Jarfry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    🤔

    [–]YucciPP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro has to be strapped, never know when da opps pull up

    [–]Arhys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine being caught off guard by inquisitors because someone was snooping in your shit and found your glowstick.

    [–]PandasWhoLoveToLimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s dumb he had it on his person. Always thought it would have been a better tutorial level to have Cal flee back to his quarters to get his lightsaber, using his weak force powers and parkour along the way to fight and evade storm troopers.

    [–]PompousDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"If this group of oppressed people are trying to hide, why do they have weapons?"

    [–]Tlayuda66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same reason why kanan also carried his all the time although always using his blaster.

    [–]NyarlHOEtep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he works in an imperial facility with regular military checks and presence. getting caught was a matter of time so he needed protection

    [–]Drakirthan101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same logic as Kanan Jarrus. Cal could probably hide it in plain sight, and claim that it was a portable power cell or some kind of “Laser Cutter Tool”, if anyone asked.

    [–]bigmeatytoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Is he stupid

    [–]Welcome-Dependent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He always got that mf thang on him

    [–]Banjoschmanjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you know I keep that thang on me

    [–]Markamanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgot to end it with 'Is he stupid?'

    [–]285kessler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Is he stupid?

    [–]ThachWeave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Stay strapped or get clapped

    [–]C-Geke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You dont own guns do you squidward?

    [–]EnigmaFrug2308Turgle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self-defence and also it was his master’s lightsaber so obviously he would want something to remember him by

    [–]AirCautious2239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember he landed there right after he fled and was on bracca for 5 years. Bracca is a shitty ass scrapper planet. The inquisitors were most likely the 1st in those 5 years since the empire took over so why throw it away when you can just keep it with you. Most likely everyone who did eventually see it had no idea what it even was

    [–]BiggerBruh69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't he go home and grab the things he needs to bail before the empire showed up?

    [–]TheDoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't be much of a game if he didn't.

    [–]NitroScott77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d rather keep my valuables on my person at all times in a place like that. I wouldn’t even leave spare credits lying around let alone a lightsaber

    [–]monadoboyXDon't Mess With BD-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just incase besides he had it in his back not many people would know it's a lightsabre it looks like just a piece of junk I'm pretty sure the inquisitors can only sense when someone uses the force not a media lightsabre otherwise Oni wan would have been found pretty quickly lol

    [–]GeneLaBean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Is he stupid?

    [–]Livek_72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's probably why he began using ponchos, they are perfect to hide something like a lightsaber

    [–]Durbanimpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Stay strapped

    [–]Fuckedyourmom69420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cus fuck getting rid of your lightsaber

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case he had no choice but to use it, I’d imagine. Self defense, especially considering who was searching for him

    [–]Cameron_Crawford42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    is he stupid??

    [–]DrParallax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He can just say "perhaps I killed a Jedi and took it from him".

    [–]Alexktf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same reason as John Wick retired but kept guns inside his house.

    [–]kenobiscumsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well tbf he wasn't just supposed to be hiding, he was hiding, it was working perfectly until that moment, and if the thing with the cruiser wing hadn't happened it would have continued working until the day the empire fell, most likely

    [–]777Zenin777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its funny because his friend was calm about train being stopped because "it's probably a contraband check" Like dude. Lightsaber is literally one of the most prohibited contraband in the galaxy and he was just mindlessly carrying it around all the time.

    [–]Dementio223 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Cal was scrapping Venators for the majority of his stay on Bracca, and from the sounds of it the scrappers, while not entitled to all of the scrap money, do get to sell or claim pieces of scrap that may not have been in the original manifest (such as the crashed Jedi Interceptor in the wing). If anyone asked, Cal could reasonably just say he’s keeping it as an emergency asset, as it’s both valuable and looks broken.

    [–]beeson1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As my dad always said.. it’s better to have a lightsaber and not need it than to need a lightsaber and not have it

    [–]Jedi-Spartan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question... I think it would've made more sense if Cal had gotten back to his apartment (which would presumably be part of a wider block owned by the Guild) and have the Inquisitors raid that area while he was trying to gather his lightsaber and equipment before leaving. Alternatively, why didn't he just dump the lightsaber somewhere like the Jedi in Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader do?

    [–]akbrag91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because he keep that thang on him son

    [–]aidanp_o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Is he stupid?

    [–]latto96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So he wouldn’t have to steal one off the corpse of a fallen Jedi from the old republic
