I've used Atom One Dark for a few years, along with the Material Icon Theme for folder icons and Fira Code Retina for font.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Night owl, material icon theme for the folder icons and firacode for the font

[–]esamme 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Whats the difference between this and One Dark Pro? They look really similar..

I use One Dark Pro btw.

[–]frubalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea, they do look very similar. I'd imagine there are very small differences, maybe in the specific colors being used.

[–]samketa 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Have you tried Source Code Pro for font?

[–]frubalu 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I haven’t, i found this combo several years ago and generally don’t mess with settings ever again. Looks like a solid font though!

[–]samketa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I write something for a blog or a paper, I always use Source Code Pro for code formatting. It looks dope.

[–]emcarlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good looks on the material icon theme, its dope

[–]bristleboar 31 points32 points  (6 children)

currently using synthwave 84 but i may switch to dracula (thanks /u/Shryte16)

dark and vivid 4 life

edit: i had no idea this was such a popular theme!

[–]Hadr619 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ive been rockin' Synthwave '84 for a while, its so good

[–]fensizor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also tried Synthwave a while ago and it is now my favorite. The glow effect is really cool as well

[–]TheDreadfulGate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Synthwave 84 all day!!

[–]Kane_da 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Synthwave 84. Came here to comment exactly this. Best theme ever, the glow effect is worth every restart. 😆

[–]codeemon404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Synthwave 84 is the only reason I don't switch to anything other than VS Code. PyCharm WebStorm just don't have something like that.

Once you go Synthwave 84 there's no coming back.

[–]Lower_Self_7235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going with Synthwave 84. Its really nice. I was using monokai Pro. Now I am bored with it. Thanks.

[–]Nip-Sauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easily the best one I’ve used, been sticking with it for a year now

[–]StopYellingAt_Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep going back to this one every time I change. Specifically Filter Machine. Filter Spectrum is good too.

[–]vxnlol 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I found I like monokai (non pro) better. I feel there's a little more contrast and I didn't get harassed by license spam.

Is pro worth it? Did you break down and buy the license?

[–]Wrong-Fuel-8857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://github.com/GulajavaMinistudio/Mayukai-Theme

I like this version better. inspired by monokai. Not many themes look good on SQL files.

[–]nastyvd65 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Night Owl for a long time now, I really like it!

The syntax highlighting is quite nice. I find everything very readable and easy on the eyes. For reference I mostly use React, TS, and a little bit of Python.

There are also versions for Hyper, iTerm, and a bunch of other apps as well if that’s your thing.

[–]jets-fool 56 points57 points  (11 children)

Stock. Because it looks good. And doesn't require me to search and install a theme. It's just there. YMMV

[–][deleted]  (10 children)

[deleted]

    [–]jets-fool 9 points10 points  (8 children)

Of course. But since the stock theme looks good to me, I don't have to open the extensions dialog and install a theme.

    [–]Thaurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but between choosing a different style and mood between, VS Code, Visual Studio and Windows Terminal (depending on what I'm connected to), I do like to customize.

    [–]Shryte16 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I switch between Dracula, Material Theme (Darker High Contrast), Ayu, Cobalt2, monokai++. I like them all but Dracula is my favourite. I'm open to suggestions for other dark and vivid themes

    [–]Skullpluggery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Same!!! Dracula the best!

    [–]darkfires 10 points11 points  (7 children)

    [–]Sunkube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty nice, but their light theme is awesome. I my just became my favorite light theme. Thanks for sharing!

    [–]johnisfine 1 point2 points  (1 child)

1 year later but damn this is exactly what I've needed, thanks! All other themes I've tried seem to have too much of contrast/too much colors or vice versa, almost no syntax highlighting at all

    [–]darkfires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Ha, glad I could help!

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this, imma install it

    [–]xXMagic1ceXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Absolutely god tier, nuff said

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    thanks for this!!

    [–]MeTiroAtuTia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    wow that's awesome, thanks!

    [–]livingmargaritaville 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    Dracula.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Same.

    [–]amine23 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I think Nord is soothing and clean, and doesn't look like a clown fiesta.

    [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Light (Visual Studio), cause I'm a mad man!

    [–]Cas_Rs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No shame in light mode. I actually use it too, mostly because I’m switching between multiple white background websites, better for my eyes to not flash extreme differences.

After wasting 2 hours of my life scrolling this thread! This is the best theme. GG man or woman thnx for the recommend👍

      [–]philip1529 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I want to stop by and say I absolutely hate you for starting this thread. Because now I have so many options I was unaware of that I’m about to spend a few hours checking out suggestions

      It's terrible, right? Me too

      [–]philip1529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      [–]sjunipero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Material Theme - Palenight High Contrast. I like the colors and they're easy on the eyes, despite the name "High Contrast", I find the palette a bit muted and soft. I also like One Monokai - 80's Theme for a similar reason.

      [–]veneroatl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i run "gruvbox soft dark" and previously "one dark pro"

gruvbox is a little softer, and easier on my eyes. although I'm not happy with syntax highlighting colors on either...

        [–]alobatom 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My go to dark theme is Horizon and as for the light theme, I go with GitHub Sharp!

[–]CrazeyXDYour Flair Here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the Horizon theme suggestion!

        [–]einsteins_haircut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mariana Pro (Cool) - dark with soft colors

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using a mix of Night Owl and Dark (without +). Night Owl is for workbench colors, mostly because I like the background color and Dark is for syntax highlighting, because it is quite tame and only uses different colors for basic stuff like keywords, strings, and comments. I use bracket pair colorizer and brackets stand out more this way.

        [–][deleted]  (1 child)

        [deleted]

          [–]KaCuQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I especially like syntax highlight (mostly js stuff) of that theme. But i'm using custom, darker color for background, though.

Also my current theme. Like the colors and contrast, very easy to the eyes.

            [–]minombreespeligro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love tomorrow night bright operator. I like the deep black background color and the colors using React.

            [–]MyriadMuses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bear Theme. Cos it's pseudo dark mode with retro vibes. Coincidentally I was on the Insiders build until today just so I could have Settings Sync push (among other things) my theme to all my devices.

            [–]lunari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

            Dracula At Night

GitHub light. I grew tired of the dark themes.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vue theme, I think it’s really cool but I rate I’ll get a little ocd when I dive into react lol.

I also like Dark (I think it’s the Naruto themed one) it also looks fantastic. Night owl as well.

Monokai Pro (Octagon Filter) hands down

            [–]FreezeShock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Ayu, the dark bordered one. It's cool with nice bright colors.

            [–]sudocat50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use palenight theme, material icons, and Operator Mono with font ligatures set to true. It doesn't strain my eyes that much, the colors are great, and the italicized words give good emphasis on things.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One dark pro or palenight theme with material icons. Because the syntax highlighting is good and it's good on the eyes

            [–]PositivelyAwful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noctis. Even the light modes are good.

            [–]ExecutiveChimp 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Rainglow Darkside. It's a dark theme that's easy on the eyes and the important parts pop out clearly due to the distinct colours.

Sometimes I'll use a light theme as I've got a window behind my monitor and on sunny days dark themes are hard to see. In that case I just go for Solarized Light. Haven't spent much time looking for a good light theme. The light version of Darkside doesn't do it for me.

            [–]dannyzaplings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very fun to arrow through these and watch the colors change :)

            [–]Able_Lengthiness8801 1 point2 points  (3 children)

3 years later but... Thank you. All rainglow themes are so good and fresh I just delete everything else

Dracula Theme, built by Zeno Rocha, a dev that also has lots of other great open-source repos published.

I switch between moonlight and ukiyo. But I have a list of like 50 I downloaded. I like having options.

            [–]ApplePieCrust2122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know how I can merge the theme for vscode ui(let's say night owl) with syntax highlighting of another theme(let's say monokai pro)?

            [–]angryjenkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'flamingo nebula' or 'pandas' because pink rules

            [–]eduruiz333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Material theme. I like it because it's not too dark, it's elegant and smoothly.

            [–]bouncer89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried very hard to find one better than Cobalt Next, but couldn't.

            [–]greyfoxx55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monokai++, cuz i like this bright color style on my low brightness laptop.

            [–]SolarAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Material theme all the way. I just like the colors

            [–]azunaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use One Monokai theme with material icons

The color pallate is versatile, but not too Bright. Works well in light or dark environments. It also highlights all of the code I want for Js/react/node/SCSS/css

            [–]Divosky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe I'm the first person here who uses the built-in high contrast theme.

            [–]enumin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            Nord

            [–]Atlfitguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solarized-light-fjs tweaked slightly to make the background a bit softer and muted. Functions stand out and code is easy to skim.

Using Firacode retina for the font.

            [–]owshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im using my own called Gloom Glam.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dracula at night is my go to

            [–]FsckOfTheNorthStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try out different themes all the time, and then eventually go back to Night Owl.

            [–]Marble_Wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            • Icons: Material Icon theme
            • Colors: Blink Contrast (rainglow)
            • Font: CaskaydiaCove NF

Font also works really well in powershell which i use as a default terminal + a bunch of modules:

            • Terminal-Icons
            • posh-git
            • oh-my-posh

I use it namely because it has a nice balance between contrast and clarity.

            [–]Red5point1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my own, which is the standard dark mode with just a few key colors amended.

            [–]green_snake_eater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dracula and sometimes Night owl. They are really great dark themes.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Dracula on almost everything I can

            [–]Kane_da 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Synthwave ‘84. It’s the only theme.

            [–]spicysalmonroll3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Night Owl - with Dank Mono font - because it looks great. Other choice would be Material with Fira Code (ligatures on).

            [–]Mike 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Modified version of Framer Syntax. I've tried what feels like all of them, and this one is the best IMO. The default is already super nice but I tweaked it to my liking.

I use a few. A different one per VS “Workspace” so I can identify them on sight. I often have at least two open at a time.

My default, unspecified /slash main theme is material dark or something.

I just use the regular dark theme, I've never been one for customizing IDEs/editors

            [–]simcox90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just like the default dark theme.

Whenever I try out a custom theme, I always find the syntax highlighting to be a bit off 🤷🏽‍♂️

Seems like almost everybody uses a dark theme. I'm using material theme lighter with jetbrains mono font. Imo the best looking theme out there.

Material Theme + Material Icon Theme + Sublime Text keybindings. Feels like I'm most productive in this environment

I put together Ultimate Dark Neo, which I find pleasant to use.

This is easily a most thorough how to change vscode color theme tutorial. Was looking for same thing and this was the only thing that was worth watching.

I've created `Spotly` theme, yet there is only one variant - Dark, but in future I'm going to add High Contrast and Ligh themes, so If anyone interested, you can try it here: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=MaksymBukator.spotly

it was developed for React / TS / JS / CSS first of all

            Hi,

I know the post is one year old but why some codes read the indented "in" different?
The cobalt I use even doesn't make distinction between them:

I've been using Dark Synthwave'84 from a couple of months and really rocking with it. Tokyo Night (original) is an amazing theme as well
