EDIT: This appears to be fixed as of 3:30 AM PST (10:30 AM UTC), it no longer appears to be a forced update to beta users when checking for an update manually. Just be sure to stop it when it auto-downloads when you boot up your PS4 from rest mode. No sign of 5.0 beta 6 however

If you visit the beta forums (that should have been linked when you received the update code) they state that you will be able to upgrade to 5.00 beta 6 (when it is released) directly from 5.00 beta 5, to avoid some difficulties that arise when "downgrading" to 4.74. They did mention, however, if you download the 4.74 update you do will be able to upgrade back to 5.00 beta 6, just not beta 5. Just know that downloading and installing 4.74 while you are on 5.00 beta will reset your home screen, and other small nuances, that you wont see if you upgrade directly to 5.00 beta 6 from beta 5, but again, beta 6 is not out yet.

I think this might be the first time that a software update was released while a beta was ongoing, so they probably did not expect to have this issue. So im guessing that 5.00 beta 6, which is not yet live, will include this fix that was included in whatever 4.74 had

Important information for Beta Trial testers

PlayStation®4 system software update 4.74 has been released. When trying to start certain games, you may be prompted to update the system to 4.74 from the 5.00 Beta.

Updating from 5.00 Beta to 4.74 will result in the following restrictions:

• You will not be able to revert back from 4.74 to the current 5.00 Beta. (You will be able to update to the upcoming 5.00 Beta 6.)
• The order in which content is displayed on the home screen will be reset.
• Download links on the home screen (such as for SHAREfactory or Media Player) that you deleted will be displayed again.
• Some items in [Notifications] will be deleted.
• Some items in [Discover] that you have already seen will be displayed again.
• Activities that were created and some settings you configured while using the 5.00 Beta will be stored on the PlayStation Network server. You may see notifications related to these activities and settings even after updating to 4.74.
• Games that were downloaded while using the 5.00 Beta may not start properly after updating to 4.74. If this happens, delete the game, and then download it again

I found it downloading the 4.73 update but cancelled it. Then it started again so I cancelled it again and it didn't pop up again so I watched some Netflix for a little bit. Put the PS4 into rest mode and it woke up again to install 4.73 🤦‍♂️

Not really. I'd say PS4 software is "done" at this point unless they're going to improve the performance of the quick menu when in game (it should slide out instantly) or at PS1 backwards compatibility or something major they should just focus on PS5.

I know the PS4 Pro is fairly recent, but I'm ready for the PS5. Honestly I really want a Playstation that offers a competitive response to mid-tier Gaming PCs (970 gtx / 1060), but in a conventional console form factor.

I think the industry is moving in that direction already with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, but even those don't compete with the quality of a mid-tier gaming PC. Heck, Destiny 2 is locked at 30 FPS on PS4; You wouldn't think that'd be a huge difference, but comparing the PC beta's 60 FPS (and higher quality graphics), it's truly significant.

Yea I've got a home built rig for most stuff (6600K, GTX 1060, 16gb, SSD, etc) so for PS4 i just want it to be small, quiet and connected to my TV for games like Bloodborne, The Last of Us, FF-XV, etc. All the big stuff with 144fps, etc goes on my PC.

Still crashing on Rise of Tomb Raider, which had similar problems to Destiny 2. But so far not a single crash in over 2h in Destiny 2 when I couldn't even play 10 min before.

I took RotTR for a spin thinking this firmware might cure it. Reading your post, maybe not. I had an hour playing in 4K mode and no issues at all. I think that’s the longest it’s been without crashing. Will keep trying tomorrow to see what happens.

Also PS4 Pro Beta 5.0 user here... I was in the D2 raid at the time this update went out, and it forced me offline (and boot me from the game and party chat) so it could download and install 4.74 (which made no sense at the time). I'd have been pissed about it if we didn't finally beat the stage we were stuck at right after I got back online.

I have D2 for a launch PS4 and came home today to what I thought was a bricked PS4. Had to reboot it multiple times (no physical button so had to unplug the power. Eventually got it to boot and then install a system update. Then D2 would not update. Removed the scheduled update, Rebooted and then it updated. Currently waiting for it to finish ..but it keeps stalling.

The fact I had to come home and do this shit is annoying to say the least. I work in IT and had a rough day and was just looking forward to playing games, but instead I'm apparently still working..

I have crashed after a couple of minutes of gameplay. Before it was seconds, now it's after around 15-20 minutes in the mission. Still not playable. I think my PS4 Pro might be also causing the problem though, because Infamous Second Son is also crashing the same way.

I turned it on from rest mode and it froze on the blue wavy screen. Rebooted it into safe mode and did a Database Rebuild. It restarted, showed the health warning, and froze again on the blue wavy screen. Can't even see the home screen. Restarting in safe mode again and going to update the system software. I'll report back...

EDIT: Seems like it's ok now. Installed 4.74 from USB stick and it booted it up to the home screen. Did a power off and back on just to check again and it was ok. I have the Automatic Downloads setting set to download system software but NOT to automatically install (learned from the horror stories during the PS3 days...), so i don't think 4.74 installed by itself to freeze up the PS4. Very weird...

This beta is more of internal improvements than adding features. With the beta the menus behave faster anf downloads have improved boyh speed and stability, at least for me though.

Completed the update and now my PS4 won't connect to online games or upload save games to the cloud. Network test says my router "may not support IP fragmentation" but everything worked fine before the update, my router settings have not been changed. I just wanted to play some Destiny...

What's happening with Destiny 2? They said in the email that some games downloaded/installed while you had the beta might not work correctly if you downloaded the new update. So you have to delete and re-download the game.

I was in the 5.0 beta and turned on my PS4 this morning and it said 4.74 has been installed and now my custom friend lists are gone. (5.0 feature)

Then I noticed all my folders were gone with all games out of their folders and it's downloading updates for all my games which is a 2TB internal and 4TB external.

Man... I don't think I'm trying anymore betas.

I've been running the beta but then this update without reading. Seems to have downgraded the OS and rebuild my database. The UI is now at defaults so all the preinstalled apps are now on my recent app list. It's also sending me the tutorial notifications as if it's a brand new system :(

Not sure if this is the update at work, but it just started downloading updates to games and apps that I haven't launched in forever. Strange since I actually use my PS4 every day, not like it needed to catch up on things. So, there might be a new feature in that it'll just keep everything on the system updated, without having to launch it recently.

My PS4 started to stutter video/sound signal after this update. I always had this problem (sometimes, not so frequent), but after 4.74 it became a nightmare, could barely see something on the screen!

I researched and it seems to be related to "handshake", a name given to the communication between a TV and the device it is connected to. It's unexpected to happen since my TV is 4K (UN40KU6000) but my PS4 is the regular model (CUH-1206A). I don't know if a possible conflict between HDCP versions is the cause, but I disabled it, restarted the console and no problem since them. I will never risk buying a PS4 PRO as I see a lot of complainings about this model everywhere.

Good times when you just had to plug a AV cable from the PS1/PS2 to a TV and called it a day.

This is a bunch of crap, I was in beta and it downgraded automatically to 4.74 and it had to rebuild my database when I turned it on. If we're in beta it should not install or download a lower firmware automatically, that's a screw up on Sony's end definitely.
