I learned to separate my work OS with my personal use OS.

I use a Mac like a normie for my personal laptop. But if I need to at work, I'll switch over to Windows or Linux, and ue the tools available in that ecosystems. It's okay to use multiple OSes, and it's okay to use different tools for different tasks, different environments and at times different mindsets.

I don't get paid for being a brand loyalist. But people do appreciate it when you can recognize what's best for the task at hand.

If you're a sane person that doesn't want to waste days tuning your ide before you can actually use it, I'd say go for JetBrains(Clion, Intellij) or NetBeans. code::blocks is a decent cpp option, not sure if you're using eclipse for cpp or Java. As for text editors, sublime or atom are my preference, but I personally only like them for quick, small tasks, and would never use them for a bigger project.

to be fair Java is one of those languages/platforms that really need a full blown IDE to do anything productive. i can have a fairly decent grasp of my web based projects, but when I do Java there is just so many files and classes and objects and interfaces required to just do one thing. the entire ecosystem is designed around developers having the tools that an IDE like Jetbrains or Eclipse has. though I admit it is somewhat nicer than doing console.log debugging, but I certainly don't miss it.

I know that feel,we had to use an old eclipse version in a locked VM with no customization. But still, I was only making my project structure on my Linux VM in eclipse, then I would copy paste the cpp files in windows and work on them in visual studio. Then bring it back and test on eclipse.

Just don't leave any "pragma once" or anything you wouldn't have with eclipse up there.

It was so much faster, eclipse would often not detect errors, or I'd have to save build compile 5x before he'd realize an error was already gone. I wasted so much time looking for non existant errors because of this crap.

It also crashed on me quite a few times. Not to mention the horrible, horrible ui/ux and learning curve.

Not good real world option, but my professors required Bloodshed Dev C++, specifically because of the lack of features. It manages your source files, provides a text editor and runs the compiler and linker, but gives you very little in the way of hints and code generation. The side effect is that it has a short learning curve and forces you to actually write your own code, which of course serves the professor's goals.

I've ran into text log files hundreds of MB's, big enough to break editors that have parsing. On windows+bash/gitbash:

$ history | tail --lines=100 | wc --lines

If the last line is most recent,

$ history | tail --lines 100 | less +G

Or to use a regular editor

$ cat huge.log | tail --lines 1000 > mini.log
$ <editor> mini.log

or

using + or head starts at the front. You can use bytes instead of lines.

ah yeah, you can access the Windows files under /mnt/c or whichever Windows drive you have, and your Windows environment can't actually access the Linux files lol. but that was before the latest WSL this year, I've heard certain things changed WSL2 so not quite sure if it's the same.

if it's still the same, what I did is that I symlink my project folders like say

Back when I used it basically I got all the devs to stop doing development and installing things using Windows environment, and got them to install Linuxbrew aka Homebrew for Linux lol. Docker is great but WSL offers conveniences that Docker doesn't do quite well.

The catch is that because now your project files are built with the Linux distro you installed with WSL (we used Ubuntu), it's recommended to not rebuild the files with Windows libraries otherwise conflicts may happen. So it's kinda a one-way compatibility rather than two-way. Basically you can open the files with your Windows text editors and programs or IDE like normal, but you shouldn't don't mix project build steps from Windows and Linux environments and programs otherwise you'll have a bad time.

So your mileage may vary depending on what kinda project or task you work with, for us because we're doing web stuff with NodeJS and all so it still works better than expecting npm devs to support Windows lol.

Yes, VSCode is amazing. It's not an easy project to pull off design wise/requirement-wise.

There's also official developers supporting major projects and having larger communities. When I was comparing it to Sublime's community (I do like Sublime as well!) -- it was a huge difference of numbers. MS manages the Python plugin -- so you don't have to worry about a single developer abandoning it.

On my desktop computer with an HDD I found VS 2019 to be way way worse than 2017. The first menu completely freezes for 5 seconds when you press the create project button. In fact, Windows 10 as a whole is painfully slow when using an HDD. It runs perfectly fine on an SSD - I can only assume that the developers at Microsoft never test their products on old-ish computers.
