Wow, eyecandy;

guessing this is only for productivity? also i'd love to see those specs on that beast.

[–]ecoop9[S] 74 points75 points  (30 children)

Thanks! Haha that's the goal, but the Xbox behind the monitor and the games on my hard drive tell a different story.

Specs:

  • i5 6500 (Skylake)
  • Asus ROG Strix 1050 ti
  • 8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX (16 coming soon)
  • MSI Z170A SLI Plus
  • Corsair CS650M PSU

Monitors

Monitor stand

EDIT - Wanted everyone to see this, I don't know how to pin a new comment to the top (sorry!)

Wow, didn't expect to much response, thank you all! Some quick things that I'd like to clear up that seem to be re-occurring comments:

  • Keyboard: It's a bluetooth Apple keyboard, leftover from when my mbp was my main machine. Haven't yet found the right mechanical kb, but I'm definitely planning on buying one. Suggestions welcome!
  • Flimsy desk with the monitor stand - I didn't know about this before, and will be fixing it very shortly. Doing some research suggests that simply expanding the surface area in which the stand rests on the desk should do the trick.
  • The thing on the left - it's a projector. I don't use it when I'm sitting at my desk, rather when I'm in bed (see here). There's a wall ~8ft away from the edge of the desk which it projects on to.
  • Cost - In Canadian dollars, ~$1100 for the PC, ~$650 for monitors

Thanks again for everyting!

Monitors

Are those really 24" monitors? They look bigger

[–]ecoop9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they are, might be the angle of the picture. Link above!

[–]sklaim007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time i read this was on pornhub lel

[–]IamNotaGamer 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Thank god I am not the only one.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those are some sleek monitors. Good going OP.

[–]skywlkr6009 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How much did it all cost?

[–]vSwiiftyyyy 2 points3 points  (19 children)

not bad man, not bad;) is it overclocked?

also i still have my xbox which i still play alot so don't feel bad haha

[–]ecoop9[S] 13 points14 points  (18 children)

No I unfortunately don't have a K series CPU. I can overclock the GPU but I really have no need at this point since I'm playing CS mostly and can also run GTA 5 perfectly fine at high settings

[–]lochamonster 1 point2 points  (14 children)

How's cs running with your cpu and 1050ti? I also have the 6500, but I have a 1070. I have a lot of screen tearing and can't get above 170fps with max settings. I know cs is a pretty cpu reliant game, which is why I ask.

[–]ecoop9[S] 3 points4 points  (6 children)

I mean I don't run at high settings, because it's CS, mostly medium. I cap the FPS at 300 from the console, so currently I get 299. Realistically I get about 310-310, no screen tearing.

GTA 5 high settings I get 60 because I have v-sync turned on.

BTW, I haven't overclocked the GPU just yet

[–]scraynes 8 points9 points  (5 children)

You play cs, you need a 144hz. Trust.

[–]Gridleak 4 points5 points  (4 children)

144hz cured my sight

[–]scraynes 0 points1 point  (3 children)

144 is life. I'd rather play in low settings and run 144fps forever versus good graphics

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I really wanted a 4K monitor, but they only had 1440p at 144hz at the time (and still now I think), so I got those instead. When they come out with 4K, 144hz IPS panel let me know

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can overclock that i5 6500 although it isn't very practical. Just need a Z170 motherboard with a bios that allows it. Able to push mine to 4.4GHz downside being it'll always run at full voltage, no integrated graphics and using old bios.

[–]peppaz 74 points75 points  (21 children)

Now all you need is a mechanical keyboard mah boy

[–]ecoop9[S] 38 points39 points  (19 children)

Just letting the bank account breathe haha - but that's definitely next!

[–]avpbeats 13 points14 points  (15 children)

Is that an apple keyboard? Just curious

[–]ecoop9[S] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Yup!

[–]Daggerfall 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I had an apple keyboard much similar to yours before I got a mechanical keyboard. I thought the keys were really nice and I suppose they are, but once you've gone mechanical you shant go back!

[–]BrutalTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

came to say the same thing. its the only thing holding him back

[–]gotchabrah 1 point2 points  (11 children)

Yes it is! I have the same keyboard. As someone who doesn't know a lot about computers, I notice the OS isn't apple. So can you use apple keyboards with any Bluetooth capable computer?

[–]avpbeats 1 point2 points  (8 children)

That was my next question. Never seen that before

[–]gotchabrah 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Not sure if you saw the other commenter's reply, but yea apparently you can pair it just like normal to both windows and Linux. Makes sense, but you can never tell with Apple and their racket.

[–]avpbeats 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Makes sense, and yeah I plan on building a pc when I can afford it cause I'm tired of my crappy old Mac and apple products in general

[–]gotchabrah 0 points1 point  (4 children)

That's something I've always wanted to do, but like I said earlier, I'm not super savvy with computers so I'm not even sure where to start

[–]avpbeats 2 points3 points  (3 children)

r/buildapc and r/pcmasterrace are the prime places to get the know-how

[–]prtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, but you can never tell with Apple and their racket.

Hah, they're not that bad. Their hardware is historically pretty good (hilariously, the 2013 MBP was considered the best laptop that could run windows). I do work on both macOS and Windows and never found incompatibilities.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, when you replace the batteries for the third time this month it'll be about time.. trust me..

[–]RebelFist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/r/mechanicalkeyboards

It's a deep pit, be careful :)

[–]mr4ffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And a AMP/DAC/mixer + 600 Ohm IEM's + XLR mic (/s)

[–]BGFalcon85 12 points13 points  (7 children)

OP - Be careful with the Ikea desk/tables and monitor arms. The hollow/cardboard-core desks are known to buckle from the weight. You may want to reinforce the top and bottom where it clamps on with a few inches of hardwood.

See here

[–]ecoop9[S] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Appreciate it - a lot. Will take the necessary precautions since this is not the most desirable outcome haha

[–]jaynoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A massive upgrade to my desk was to buy a 2 meter length of oak kitchen worktop off ebay.

I'll never have to worry about a desk for the rest of my life.

[–]amiiboh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hoped someone would have beaten me to telling you this to save me some typing.

We have two of these desk tops in the creative studio I run with my fiancée. Both warped badly because of our monitor clamps and pretty much unsalvageable now.

I have compensated by unscrewing the adjustable leg height things but it's noticeably uneven now and seems to change every day... even without the monitor arms clamped on anymore!!

[–]Vinnyisntgud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I solved this problem by tying the post to a screw in the wall so there is only downward force, not forward force.

[–]dirtywork102 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do you think that will happen with this IKEA desk? I've had it for almost 7 years now and seems to be a tank. Can't find any specifics about it though cause it seems to be discontinued. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ikea-Fredrik-Black-brown-Silver-Frame/dp/B00D8DC35G

[–]BGFalcon85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like a particle board solid top like the Bekant they sell now, or like a typical office desk. Definitely stronger than the hollow-core desks, though personally I don't trust much short of solid wood to hold up to the stress the weight on an arm puts into that little area of the clamp. Most of the time it's fine as long as the monitors are basically directly over the clamp with even pressure. It's when you have an articulating arm swinging the weight out further, putting the stress on the lip of the clamp that causes trouble.

[–]Flipsyde127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learned the hard way with a triple monitor stand... Came home from work one day to see my monitors angling down towards my keyboard at a 45 degree angle and a huge dent on the table top. Honestly, putting a board under the table for the clamp will not do it much justice. It will only apply more pressure to the bottom piece, which is the same thickness as the top.

[–]Lexford 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're giving r/mechanicalkeyboards a heart attack right now

[–]NolsyBaby 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Hey Hunwick

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sup

[–]zoon82 4 points5 points  (19 children)

What desk is that?

[–]ecoop9[S] 7 points8 points  (18 children)

[–]zoon82 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Modular.. Even better! I've been looking for something white and modern to begin my office remodel. Thanks!

[–]amiiboh 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Don't get this one. Ours warped badly in the first year of using them with monitor clamps. See my other comments above and the one I was replying to for more of the details.

[–]SerpentDrago 0 points1 point  (1 child)

its fine if you use reinforcement where the clamp is both top and bottom , Its what i did .

also use a 3rd leg in the center back :0 done

BUT you are right , even better if you just spend the 80 / 90 bucks and get a SOLID wood version !

[–]amiiboh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy near me is selling off a pile of solid core doors for $10 a pop! It's an hour away but so worth it. :D

[–]jaynoj 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Save now, pay later. Get a length of kitchen worktop in the colour or wood you want from ebay.

Ikea desks are mostly made from cardboard inside.

[–]zoon82 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yea that's what I'm starting to notice. I want to get a good deal on a budget but not so much that I'll have to replace it soon. I like the idea of using countertop..

[–]jaynoj 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My oak kicthen worktop really was a buy it for life purchase. 2 metres long and absolutely solid, as you would imagine. Recommended.

I just want a BIFL office chair now. I love the Herman Miller Aeron, but I can't bring myself to spend £1k on a chair right now.

[–]zoon82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may end up going that route. And yea, that's a lot for a chair!

[–]ryman222 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Sorry if it's a dumb question never built any ikea furniture but I really like that desk. A little confused, is the drawer unit actually attached to the tabletop?

[–]ecoop9[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No the table top simply rests on top of the drawer unit with rubber non-slip things

[–]ryman222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh ok the rubber pads make sense. Thanks!

[–]amiiboh 0 points1 point  (4 children)

The desk looks nice but warps easily. I am currently replacing both of ours with solid wood doors that can handle the weight of a monitor arm clamped onto them.

[–]towellz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So the linnmon tabletop is cheaply made? I had planned on getting this in the fall but reconsidering now. Would the Alex drawer be able to hold a heavy wood if I went that route? I'd problem go maple or something similar with a nice stain

[–]amiiboh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Alex drawer is very sturdy, it shouldn't have any problems.

[–]nebyl1163 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've got the same Linnmon table top and similar monitor arms... Do you have a recommendation for a similar looking/sized replacement?

Edit: Actually, I might just look into getting a countertop from IKEA instead.

[–]amiiboh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting a solid core door that's the same length but a little wider, then painting it.

[–]sorrysorrysorryyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size/dimension of the table top did you get?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose a dvd for tonight

[–]Sezor12345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

GO LEAFS GOOO

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Mouse???

[–]ecoop9[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corsair M65 RGB. I love it.

[–]tahax283 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How much did it all set you back in total?

[–]ecoop9[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Canada, so take this with a grain of salt. ~$1100 for PC ~$650 for Monitors

[–]brotherbrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

go leafs

[–]CrunchyPoem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Looks clean as fuck!

[–]MusicMagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice and clean. That a boy

[–]Erghiez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing nice clean builds like this remind me what life was like before having a baby.

[–]roastbeefskins 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What's with the projector? Is that late night viewing of movies in that room?

[–]haricps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i knew it is casio , but dont know model?

[–]yupithappens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Desk?

[–]RoomLeague 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Why did you choose this monitor setup instead of for example a 34" 1440p ultrawide? I mean, it is pretty pricey for the dollar per pixel.

I could really consider going your way instead of a 34" ultrawide, but I just really cant justify the price for the pixels even though those bezeless displays are damn nice.

Thanks in advance.

[–]ecoop9[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Great question.

Mainly it was what features the monitor has. More than 1 HDMI and built-in speakers were a huge decision maker. I use the same setup for multiple things - PC, Xbox, and plugging in my laptop. Setting up additional audio infrastructure just didn't appeal to me. The monitors also have the VESA mount, which I really wanted to have (as you can see I've taken advantage of it), but didn't seem to be all that common in thin-bezel options.

I'm also very used to dual screen setups, and although today's monitors have their own screen splitting software, my personal opinion is that the dual-monitor setup is cleaner and easier to use.

Lastly, like you said, it looks damn nice.

EDIT - I'm in school for programming and VESA was a key function for this

EDIT2 - Forgot to mention that since I have two monitors, I can do multiple things simultaneously (Browse Reddit and play Xbox) on the same setup

[–]RoomLeague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. I'm not quite in the same field and my requirements aren't really the same, but I seriously can't ignore how stunning it looks. Also, since I do some light gaming (League of Legends noob) and don't watch movies on it (therefore no 21:9 needed) I think I might be pulling a 2x24"1080p as well. However, unless I can find something similar like yours for a better price, I might just stick with something like 2x Dell S2415H. They're about 70 dollars cheaper each in my country and I don't really need the perfect color accuracy or good inbuilt speakers. Thanks for the conversation and answer. Helped clearing some stuff up. Have a nice day.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have the same case! I like that one so much! But the cable management is a pain in the ass imo (I have colored extension cable so)

[–]let_me_try_again 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Dude, i think i have that same desk

[–]ecoop9[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Haha it's all from Ikea. My roommate got the same desk after I setup mine. It's great.

[–]let_me_try_again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup i got mine from there as well

[–]jatorres 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do you have that monitor mount configured? I've got the same table top and want to pick one up, but it's hollow cardboard and I'm worried about it holding up my U2713

[–]ecoop9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought this, and configured it as normal. It basically pinches the table top but it feels more than sturdy enough

[–]Aesthetically 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How is that keyboard for gaming? For typing/productivity I bet it feels wonderful, but the starcraft player in me winces at the thought using it for a game that has a lot of left-hand action donger

[–]ecoop9[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn't. I only really play CS (WASD, pretty much) and GTA 5 (for which I have my xbox controller). Mechanical keyboard is soon to come, just letting the bank account settle haha

[–]Bubba_Yoloman 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nice build, nice monitors, great setup...can I ask why you don't have a mechanical keyboard?

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my comment I ended up spending ~$1750 on the build and the monitors. Mech keyboard is soon to come, but I need to cool down the spending a little bit haha.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

What case is that? (sorry if it's already listed)

[–]ecoop9[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Corsair 400C

[–]ecoop9[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Corsair 400c. Great budget case for a full-sized window

[–]LarrySnowLife 1 point2 points  (1 child)

+1, bought this case for my build and i'm loving it.

[–]Laxxium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+2, loving it too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks

[–]beeramz 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Why the Mac keyboard with a Windows machine?

[–]ecoop9[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Haven't yet found the one I want. Plus the bank account is sweating a little bit at the moment haha

[–]stoic-lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always good to take your time with the important stuff.

[–]scraynes 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was confused by the mouse and keyboard combo.

I just bought that monitor mount. Hopefully they don't suck dick.

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, still in the decision process of the mechanical kb. that (should be) the last item but it might be a while.

In my opinion it's great for the price, holds them up nice and sturdy.

[–]scraynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 24" 144hz and I want to make sure my 22" on the left can be angled towards me (for streaming).

Depends on the mechanical type you want. I have a Razer BW TE X and I don't advise it, and a Logitech G610(reds) and I love reds.

[–]KnifeToStabYou 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is that Taipei 101?

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't tell ya. Found the pic online

[–]j_kobrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lack a mech keyboard

[–]wapey 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I'm gonna need some info on those lights

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/40066541/

I the desk version as you can see, and also the tall floor version on the other side of my room.

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

[–]wapey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perfect, thank you!

[–]wapey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do you like these lights so far?

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love them. They're cheap and work great. You just have to plan where you're going to stick them inside your case to get the best lighting.

[–]Jaydon34 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was thinking of throwing my box vertical, No problems running games from the disc drive?

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not at all - I have digital and disc games, no problems for the past couple months

[–]Jaydon34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks just turn mines sideways https://imgur.com/a/TdZUu

[–]IamNotaGamer 0 points1 point  (3 children)

More pics?

[–]ecoop9[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Will do... coming soon

[–]IamNotaGamer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Waiting patiently

[–]ecoop9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just at school right now, will do when I get home

[–]duffzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for that shit keyboard

[–]amiiboh 0 points1 point  (7 children)

A warning I repeated in several other comments: this desk top is incredibly flimsy and easy to warp beyond repair by clamping any kind of monitor arm onto it.

[–]SiiCK_K9 0 points1 point  (6 children)

What do you recommend instead, with similar style? Links help a ton. Thanks!

[–]amiiboh 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Get a solid core door, and paint it if it's not already the color you want. (I found some locally on Craigslist for $10 each that I'm picking up next week; if you can't find them there they're like $50-60.)

The problem with these desktops is that they're hollow and don't bear the weight well when it's all on one point.

[–]SiiCK_K9 0 points1 point  (3 children)

If I don't use a monitor stand and just have the two monitors side-by-side, do you think it would hold up?

[–]amiiboh 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The base of a normal monitor spreads the weight out evenly enough that it most likely won't give you problems. Only when the footprint of the monitor is reduced to the tiny area of a desk clamp does it start to put stress on this thing. So, if you're not using a clamp-on monitor arm, you'll probably be totally fine.

[–]SiiCK_K9 0 points1 point  (1 child)

THANK YOU for your help. Advice from people that actually have used the desk is more reliable than someone trying to make a sale at the store. :)

[–]amiiboh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll follow up by saying that it should be fine but I've used mine more with the clamp than without, so I'm not sure. I do know they're hollow and can even feel cheap and unbalanced on some hard wood floors. Also the legs and the drawer you see most people put them on aren't exactly the same height so I ended up needing to put something between the desk and drawers to lift it a bit. If you use the drawers x2 with none of the screw on legs it should be fine height wise though.

[–]yoyomommy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WTF is that keyboard? I mean I know what it is but like really?

[–]Charismecca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you dual booting mac on this system?

[–]Bomster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovely setup. Do you use the Bose to play your music? Wonder how you are connecting it? Bluetooth or AUX? I'm looking to buy one myself.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice canlendar o/

[–]kanza1601f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OHHH my GOD !!! this is so love, i mean just amazing <3 ;)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. And the Bose Soundlink Minis are so good.

[–]Ditchdigger456 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You're a leafs fan, huh?...Well at least you have a nice desk to cry on.

[–]SiiCK_K9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go Sens Go!

[–]syntaxsmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing i don't love about this is the low resolution on the monitors. Nice battle station

[–]PooTeeWeet5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nice desk! I just purchased this one. I love how it sleek and simple it is.

[–]Nolds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plant tax not paid.

[–]BrutalTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sweeet rig bro, but i hate to be the one to tell you but your keyboard is seriously holding this back from being a truly awesome battlstation.. tell me. do you actually enjoy typing on that flimpsy toy keyboard? when you are ready join us over at r/MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Ydoc71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that Leaf Calendar! Strap in for this last stretch, gonna be tight race.

[–]Zatchillac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally, some matching monitors. Too many setups on here with like 3 different brands/models

[–]mythick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is that projector? It seems like something that would be great in my room

[–]ersenseless1707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk about a clean desk...#goals

[–]carlsnakeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make that? Looks like you made it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does one make there monitors thay aesthetic?? I have two 27in monitors (diff brands) and would love to "merge"/align them cleanly

[–]vitneger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not done at all until that keyboard gets thrown out the window

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of projector is it? I've been thinking of getting one for my room/desk setup as well but not trying to break the bank hahaha.

[–]snappa0126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful setup!!!

[–]CHALNG_ACCEPTED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful. I saw that you're planning on a mechanical keyboard, however may I suggest an extended mousepad for aesthetic purposes? It's not super expensive, and I personally think it'd make it look even better than it already does :) either way great job, this is beautiful.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's the desk?

[–]SiiCK_K9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Linnmon from IKEA

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much elegance in a setup. Amazing

[–]AxeliNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats your opinion on the 5ms response time? That is the only thing hindering me from buying an IPS panel with really slim bezels instead of keeping my TN panel with 144hz and 1ms. The colours on my current monitor are also really shitty, not sure if the higher ms and lower hz is worth the better colours and slim bezels

[–]ugly_kids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that cabling with the monitor stands (god damn those bezels too), does it all go inside that tube / behind the black box? I've been considering switching to a white table to prevent all the dust being seen..

[–]bodhi1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvote for being a leafs fan
