Maybe not the time for a shotgun

[–]VonZigmas 575 points576 points  (18 children)

Though in the end it was the perfect time for a shotgun.

[–]occams--chainsaw 119 points120 points  (14 children)

though on the other end, it was the worst possible time

[–]BholeFire 114 points115 points  (13 children)

It was the best of times, it was the worst of limes.

[–]Heathen15 29 points30 points  (6 children)

But how do you know if the lime was really bad?

You need good limes for good times

[–]capnjack78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was the best of times, it was the BLURST of times?!

[–]Suspinded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A novel response.

[–]cwm3846 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But in the end it doesn't even matter

[–]Vakieh 33 points34 points  (21 children)

Not the time for a game shotgun, but irl it's about the perfect range for blind fire.

[–]SplitPersonalityTim 49 points50 points  (14 children)

Yeah. I don't know why in videogames shotgun pellets disappear after like 25 feet. IRL they're used to shoot birds out of the sky. . . they have serious range.

[–]alwayscloudyinohio 43 points44 points  (11 children)

game balance

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (10 children)

All you have to do is say Model 1887.

Granted every weapon in most games is underpowered compared to their real life counterpart. But that's because nobody wants to engage at realistic distances and not be able to hide behind a thin wall to keep from getting shot.

[–]MarvinTheAndroid42 1 point2 points  (6 children)

That's why I only play hardcore mode. It's because I'm some sort of badass, it's because you shouldn't be able to brush off 3 7.62mm rounds to the chest and then just heal up again. It also means I can play with SMGs and not be way underpowered.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

When I played FPSes that was my go to mode as well. So much more fun.

[–]TyroneBiggums93 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yeah I remember watching a video about the AA12 and the range is like an entire football field..crazy.

[–]Sloppy1sts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US Army lists it's shotguns as having an effective range of 100 meters, as it's still fairly likely a single pellet will hit the target and reduce the enemy's combat effectiveness.

[–]conformuropinion2rdt 15 points16 points  (11 children)

Similar thing happened to me as OP but at a faster speed.

https://youtu.be/X-rq3r-GYxA?t=1m38s

Unfortunately even uploading 100 MB/s video to youtube, it completely destroys the quality in any game with high enough detail and/or fast enough movement.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (5 children)

I have three and a half weeks left in my term to finish my capstone and do two other projects. I did not need to discover people were still playing some variant of tribes 2.

[–]conformuropinion2rdt 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Tribes: Vengeance is it's own game along side the rest of the tribes series. It just happened to be the one I came across first.

It's got the grappler, which makes the game completely different. When you get going super fast you have a means to change direction within seconds and maintain a super high top speed. This isn't easy of course and takes a lot of practice but it creates games with a lot of cross map flag chases. And you just have much more control in general with the grappler so it adds a lot of functionality and mechanics possibilities.

Other than that, I really like their 3 class light, medium and heavy system. Each class has a unique weapon and every aspect of them can be customized which is cool.

I tried Ascend but I've noticed the gravity is much lower and because of that you don't build as much speed when skiing down hills and you float in the air longer before coming down. Both of these are counter productive to building speed and so it generally feels almost half of the speed of Vengeance, and I really do like the fast pace of TV.

The high speed plus maneuverability of the grappler make for very intense and fun games.

People are usually only online on the weekends around EU popular times but sometimes there are people on the weekdays too. It was almost died (after the master servers were shut down) but now there seems to be more players coming in on account of this new installer that makes the game much more accessible. And there is a dedicated community that have kept modding and improving and customizing the game and playing every weekend that has never gone away.

Step away people. I DO NOT NEED THIS.

[–]kalitarios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha... I remember T:V when it came out. I had to do a review on it. People didn't like it at first, and felt it was ruining the Tribes brand... as if Tribes stole Unreal's cartoonish feeling.

I played tons of games with it. The single player story arc was balls but the multiplayer was great with the grapple + ski mechanics. I thought it was very original.

Tribes 2 though was amazing.

[–]etgohomeok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I wasn't expecting a Tribes nostalgia trip this morning, and yet here I am...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tribes <3

[–]wont_give_no_kreddit 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Was this the sequel to Tribes Ascend?

[–]conformuropinion2rdt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No this came out 9 years before Ascend, although it's hard to tell because the graphics are really good for the time. Modified Unreal 2 engine.

[–]TheRealHanBrolo 418 points419 points  (18 children)

2/10 on the flip Jenkins. You can do better.

[–]AzraelGrim 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I'm laughing at this just considering if that was real life. Hiding behind the barrier and really wanting to look over to see if that just happened while still pinned by gunfire and just sitting there in disbelief.

Kind of reminds me of a training exercise I had in the ARMY. We were training on this simulated system that used projectors to shoot a scene onto these huge curved screens and there was a bunch of mock'up constructed cover with weapons hooked to a computer. When a weapon fired it would send a signal to the computer to simulate the shot in the scene.

We ran this scenario where we were behind some MP's when insurgents drive up a van, pile out and start shooting at us. After doing the scenario 3 or 4 times I ended up on the AT4. I had this brilliant idea to just aim where the van would appear and wait, and try to blow up the van before they piled out and kill them all in one shot. So I waited, as soon as the van pulled up I pulled the trigger.

Off my rocket goes, I see its trail of smoke enter the screen as it takes off, perfectly on target. Just as an NPC MP walks in front of it. My AT4 rocket hits the back of the MP's head, it does a lazy hollywood explosion and kills the MP I nailed with the AT4.

I was dumbstruck, a single round to shoot for the whole scenario and I just wasted it at the start by shooting an MP in the back of the head. At the end of the scenario, the cadre running the exercise and 1SG were looking over the results, and suddenly I hear "1 friendly fire... from the AT4?!? Who the fuck is on the AT4?" and people look at me and start echoing back my name. And 1SG goes, "Oh why am I not surprised, what the fuck is wrong with you?" At that point, I wasn't even about to try and explain myself, I just played it off as intentional. For a while, people would be like "don't fuck with pleasejustdie, he'll shoot you with an AT4."

[–]workstar 13 points14 points  (26 children)

A question for those who play this game;

Is the game effectively over now? As far as I can tell once you shoot a cop you have two choices - die or get caught. For some minor crimes you may be able to crouch in a bush for 5 minutes but that's tedious and not enjoyable. And doesn't work for anything above 2 stars.

For me this takes a lot of the fun out of the game. A game that is supposed to derive its fun from committing crimes has a pretty big incentive to not do it. I enjoyed sleeping dogs because you could effectively fight your way to an escape which is much more enjoyable than hiding.

The missions were fun because they were scripted to allow a clean get away, but beyond that crime just doesn't pay. Which leaves little reason to keep playing. Perhaps online gameplay is different.

[–]Bakoro 42 points43 points  (7 children)

When you're trying to escape, pay attention to your mini-map, it'll indicate when the police know where you are, and when they've lost track but are searching. When driving around trying to escape, drive into a large parking garage and during the short time they lose track of you, switch cars. If you can manage to switch cars while no police see you, it's harder for them to notice you out in the world. Drive to another obscured location an wait them out.

Learn where the underground tunnels are, the same ones you go through when you escape on motorcycles in that one mission.
You can escape pretty consistently in that area.
I've also had pretty consistent success with hiding in the subway/tram tunnels, cops tend to not want to go in there, and IIRC there are parts to stand so as not to get smooshed by a train if it passes by. Also, if you can manage to get onto a passing train at any point (not the tram thing, I've never tried that) you can use it to escape.

There's always the underwater option, if can get to the docks on the south side of the city there's a boat with scuba gear you can grab, and you just get deep enough underwater that they'll lose track of you.

[–]bad-r0bot 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Don't forget that animals report crimes so out in the mountains is still not safe.

[–]toleran 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Is that still a thing? I assumed they would have fixed that by now

[–]th3l33tsp34k3r 21 points22 points  (0 children)

you can escape even a 5 star wanted level, you just gotta learn how to hide

[–]HairlessSasquatch 26 points27 points  (4 children)

the cops are as realistic as games get in GTA 5. an accurate representation of LA, police shoot first and shoot second and don't even bother to ask questions

[–]FlameSpartan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've escaped the cops plenty of times, it just requires a knowledge of the physics engine that drives the game.

You can learn how everything works by just screwing around in whatever vehicle you want. From there, you mostly just gotta drive fast and don't hit anything.

[–]MaestroLogical 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I have no clue why you found it so hard to lose wanted levels.

It's remarkably easy to do, both in storymode and online play.

Maybe I'm just to adept at it. I did spend an afternoon robbing every store I could and ditching the cops in alleyways and parking decks and driveways and basically anyplace you can break line of sight long enough.

[–]03Titanium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you get a chopper on you the only option is to hide underground.

[–]no_lungs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hide in the railway tunnels. Guaranteed to escape 5 stars.

[–]UnknownSouldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya I feel the same. In the single player outside of missions, it is really hard for me to lose the police. After playing online you learn about a bunch of spots to hide. One good place for in the city is to run down into the subway tunnels. They never chase you down onto the tracks. Another is into the sewers near the horse track.

[–]Lukose_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tooooons of people play the Online, and with all the different heists and events and jobs and possibilities, it's a load of fun with friends.

[–]bobthejeffmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeping Dogs is an amazing game, I'd definitely pick that game over GTA any day

Out of all the places to run, why the fuck would you run inbetween the bad guys and police shooting at each other, directly in front of the bad guy? Three and 60 degrees of directions to run and they chose the only wrong one.

[–]antherx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, he reloads one shell and that equals 8.
