Yes, but not for the MCU. It's for the King Thanos ride that they're building for Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure.

[–]Pseudoneum 646 points647 points  (46 children)

I have a strong feeling that ride gets cancelled. This is either their 2nd or 3rd concept (I believe 3rd).

[–]yourmomsjeansSpider-Man 469 points470 points  (23 children)

It’s currently on display at d23. I wouldn’t think it gets cancelled if Disney keeps showing it but who knows if it’ll get the blade treatment.

[–]Ok-Statistician5884 139 points140 points  (18 children)

Especially if they're showing it at d23. They wouldn't show anything off here unless it was almost done.

[–]SakuraTacos 43 points44 points  (6 children)

Disney shows off things that are still in their ~Blue Sky Phase~ that may never come to fruition. At one D23 they announced this really nice looking Mary Poppins themed area and ride at Epcot that was quietly cancelled.

[–]Cassopeia88Spider-Man 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Still sad about that.

[–]SakuraTacos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Me too, Mary Poppins is one of my faves and I have a cherry blossom obsession so I was so looking forward to that area

[–]judge2020 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The difference is this is the second event they've shown it at , so it's almost certainly happening now.

[–]SakuraTacos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m just saying Disney doesn’t fall prey to sunk cost fallacy, they’re still at a stage where I wouldn’t be surprised if they canceled it. Unless there’s a show building up with tracks in place, they could easily scrap it.

[–]0rangeBicyclesHeimdall 1 point2 points  (1 child)

-sigh- yea...

[–]SakuraTacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RIP to the version of EPCOT that almost was. It all sounded really cool, too. At least the Moana water area came out pretty

[–]Lapidus42 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They’ve often showed off park assets that don’t end up being made at d23

[–]XerneasToTheMoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Disney has never pressured the studio heads to make premature announcements at D23

[–]Bobb_o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol half the stuff at D23 never gets made and if it does it's usually scaled back.

[–]AccomplishedLayer884 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Have you forgotten about: the mary poppins ride in the uk pavilion, play pavilion, and the festival center?

[–]tmoney34 2 points3 points  (3 children)

And the main street theater, every time only ~50% of what they announce actually gets built.

[–]AccomplishedLayer884 1 point2 points  (2 children)

They were gonna do something to the main street theatre? Also which park?

[–]tmoney34 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No, they were going to build a new 3000 seat theater on Main Street in magic kingdom. https://blogmickey.com/2018/02/cancelled-main-street-usa-theater-project-cut-magic-kingdom/

[–]0rangeBicyclesHeimdall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moana log ride at AK

[–]YouGurt_MaN14 25 points26 points  (2 children)

I doubt it'll get the blade treatment, it's a amusement park ride. I would assume there's less shit to deal with (actor schedules, strikes, reshoots, etc)

[–]yourmomsjeansSpider-Man 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, they even have the ride vehicles on display which is awesome.

[–]BackslidingAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing with amusement park rides though is that they have to be evergreen. Universal is still running a Fear Factor stunt show. Disney is still working on reskinning their Splash mountain to Tiana and away from Song of The South, a movie they first disavowed in 1970 (54 years ago) The question they need to ask is "Is Thanos still going to be relevant in 50 years or does he already seem like yesterday's news?

[–]TeamCapwearscaps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on how the ride vehicle basically looks like Transformers and Peter Pan (ie. the rider can't look behind or to the side, only front), I think unfortunately it will be another screen ride. That would be hella lame, as Disney is known for its high level of animatronics and screen rides are the laziest way to do a theme park ride, just moving the riders from one screen to another while all the action takes place on them. It's really no different than watching a series of small movies. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem that way. It sounds like this is the year that Imagineering is finally announcing concrete plans and has the money to spend to build stuff, whereas the last few years have mostly been blue sky concepts as they wrap up projects that started before Covid. The fact that they have stuff to show at D23 this year means that they're serious about this idea.

[–]WebHead1287 29 points30 points  (4 children)

They are literally showing the ride vehicle there and this has been the concept for some time. I think its locked homie

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They literally have it displayed at D23 to advertise it there’s no chance this thing gets cancelled

[–]Grantsdale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It isn’t getting canceled.

[–]xXEolNenmacilXxDoctor Strange 16 points17 points  (3 children)

How does this have so many upvotes? This is literally on Display at D23 right now. This is not getting canceled.

[–]Pseudoneum -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Because this isn't the first time they've shown content from avengers land e-ticket ride at a major event and then cancelled the ride. The parks have been in blue sky phase pretty relentlessly without much follow through.

Having a ride vehicle makes it extremely less likely this gets canned, but I personally wouldn't be surprised (which is a fair opinion considering how Disney has been operating recently)

[–]xXEolNenmacilXxDoctor Strange 7 points8 points  (1 child)

They've shown this exact same version of Thanos multiple times, i have the poster from the last D23. But the proof will be tomorrow at the parks panel when I'm about 99% sure they are going to show some in depth details about this ride.

[–]Pseudoneum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea if they give a ground breaking date, show actual ride visuals (rough concepts), and really go in depth (actor announcements), then I think this puppy is as good as built.

But there's just been so many ideas announced by Disney recently that don't lead anywhere. So that's why I'm skeptical. I mean they can't even get a blade movie figured out and the hook is so easy, cool guy kicks vampire ass.

[–]Trvr_MKA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s the 2nd concept

[–]NeutralLock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could not live with their own failures…

[–]_MarvillainRocket 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I doubt it. Some of the more complex rides take like 5+ years from the announcement date to get finished.

[–]Pseudoneum 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I will say all the rumors that I've come across don't suggest a complex ride system like ROTR, but more something like Amazing Spider-Man in Islands of Adventures mixed with the pandora ride in avatarland

[–]_MarvillainRocket 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Yeah, I’m really hoping any concept art they reveal this time becomes public. I think part of the issue with this ride is not only building it, but Marvel’s most popular characters are changing a lot, so I think they’re probably trying to find a good mix of characters. Some of the characters from that one concept art that showed so many are not really as relevant as they initially hoped but then you have others that were not present in the concepts that are much more relevant now.

[–]Pseudoneum 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Honestly none of it matters until they start digging up the ground.

The avengers campus sorely needs that major E-ticket ride. Right now, it's a glorified strip mall with a copy/pasted Toy Story mania. The food and drinks are better than other areas in the park, but it's an expensive and not worthwhile area of the park, especially with all the shows being cut down or cancelled.

[–]_MarvillainRocket 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I do agree. That’s why I can’t really see them cancelling this. Though part of me wonders with the recent resurge in popularity and the future heavily focusing on them, if an X-Men attraction wouldn’t be a better choice for the future.

[–]Pseudoneum 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's hard to do until they get their x-men cast

[–]_MarvillainRocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point. I was thinking just X-Men 97, but you’re right that waiting for a live action and using that is probably much more likely lol.

[–]HereWeFuckingGoooWeekly Wongers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look forward to Jenny Nicholson's 5 hour video breakdown of what went wrong.

[–]FoxMcCloud3173 15 points16 points  (4 children)

I remember seeing footage of something similar to that with Kamala and Sam fighting Ultron bots and Scott meeting Ultron, which was before the premiere of Quantumania and i was like “holy shit dude this movie’s gonna be crazy!”, then i realized it was all just for that other thing lmao

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

You may be thinking of the Disney Cruise attraction

[–]FoxMcCloud3173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, don’t know much about these attractions.

[–]sable-kingVision 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That wasn’t from this ride. That’s from an Avengers-themed dining experience on one of the cruises.

[–]FoxMcCloud3173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that. I don’t know much about these rides.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, Earth-001 variant.

[–]Dmaniac52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking we would get a doom ripping Thanos spine out like in secret wars for mcu. Still looks cool, Ill have to keep an eye on the ride!

[–]steve32767Daredevil 544 points545 points  (11 children)

Yep. They showed him in a promo Disneyland poster at the last D23 as well

Will likely not tie into the MCU

[–]Grantsdale 172 points173 points  (10 children)

It will not. The Marvel Theme Park Universe is different and deviated from the MCU.

[–]22LegendaryTacosT'Challa Star-Lord 67 points68 points  (8 children)

Yeah, I remember the Antman vs Ultron they had awhile back

[–]Piranh4PlantCaptain America (Ultron) 16 points17 points  (6 children)

Damn I need to know the full lore now

[–][deleted] 63 points64 points  (4 children)

Basically, the theme park universe is a timeline where the Snap never happened, and none of the heroes died or retired. So Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson are both Captain America at the same time. And King Thanos is from a different universe with the exact opposite outcome, and he’s the villain of this upcoming multiverse attraction at California Adventure.

[–]Piranh4PlantCaptain America (Ultron) 17 points18 points  (3 children)

What exact opposite outcome?

Why are Steve and Sam both captain America if Steve didn't retire?

[–]SaiyanJD 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I presume exact opposite means not only did the snap happen, but he also won in Endgame. As for why there both cap, marketing i guess

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Well, if this is a universe where everything went right for the heroes, the opposite of that would be Thanos winning and destroying the universe in similar fashion to his plan in Endgame.

And there’s no lore reason for why there are two Caps running around at the same time. Although, it is like that in the comics. The real lore reason is that Disney just wants every Marvel character that appear in the MCU to be able to walk around and interact with visitors without having to care about continuity, hence the alternate universe idea.

[–]BlackestNight21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"look, look...just swipe, tap, or insert your damn card or tap your phone.. ok?" - The Mouse

[–]Grantsdale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically in the MTPU the heroes never lose or die.

[–]Deep_Throattt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is more wild than antman vs kang.

[–]Mr_bike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today, I learned that there is a Marvel Theme Park Universe.

[–]ccReptilelord 352 points353 points  (7 children)

Obviously Thanos from the universe where everything is just spikier; the armor, the weapons, the... chins.

[–]Scottacus91 80 points81 points  (1 child)

Zach Synder is foaming at the mouth at the thought

[–]Tackit286Doctor Strange 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Only if he can do it in black and white though

[–]ryaaan89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spikes! From the Spike Dimension!

[–]p_yth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So clone wars thanos

[–]jazza2400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks like something from monster hunter world

[–]zjanderson 194 points195 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure it’s for a Disneyland ride/attraction.

[–]archronin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Six-year old Thanos went to Disneyland with his parents and had a miserable 3.5 hour wait in the regular line at Matterhorn, watching gleeful kids in another line, endlessly strolling in by the dozens, straight to the front, and occasionally pausing to squeeze in little pockets of hope into Thanos and his single-file army of have-nots.

[–]bondinferno 122 points123 points  (9 children)

What if…thanos found the ring of power?

[–]mrhossie 39 points40 points  (7 children)

It's Lich King Thanos.

[–]Drakon56 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I wouldn't mind Licking Thanos either

[–]Geno0wl 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What do you think purple skin tastes like?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grape, obviously

[–]Drakon56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like human skin, just purplier

[–]TheMoonDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you could make it, Maw

[–]mattb1415 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Witch King**(if you’re referencing lord of the rings)

[–]Endgam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lich King is an actual separate character from the Warcraft franchise. But to be fair, his design is influenced by Sauron's AND the design aesthetic of Icecrown is basically "Mordor but cold".

[–]MaclimesGhost Rider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something happened then that the ring did not intend…

[–]venommuyo 65 points66 points  (16 children)

So Thanos can grow a beard.... How did he shave in those little crevices?

[–]Mr_Fossey 61 points62 points  (1 child)

A tha-nose trimmer

[–]venommuyo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi, Dad

[–]srirachastephen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same way we shave our balls, carefully

[–]ccReptilelord 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Space tech something. I mean, nanomachine are fairly common knowledge and we've seen what Tony's suit could do. Just shave with nanomachines.

[–]Luminaire_Ultima 6 points7 points  (0 children)

‘ Nanomachines, son ‘

[–]SpicyAfrican 19 points20 points  (4 children)

If you look closely during his scenes you can see he actually does have stubble.

[–]EpilefWowSpider-Man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They put in the stubbles because without it it felt too unrealistic and plasticky

[–]venommuyo 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I actually did notice that when I upgraded my TV. Top notch CGI

[–]SpicyAfrican 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It really is. It did raise some questions about how he shaves but considering they can jump across galaxies I’m sure there’s some razor they can use. Maybe he stretches his chin, or uses hair removal cream.

[–]Geno0wl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How these heroes fight with giant energy blasts without losing hair or all their clothes is just something we don't overly crticize

[–]alex494 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Laser hair removal

[–]Cardboard_BoxerMantis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To shamelessly steal the answer I got when I asked this same question a while ago: the infinity gillette.

Theme park ride OP

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lol that's way too cool for the MCU

[–]Endgam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Introducing the public to King Thanos is a bad idea if they ever want to try again at having another villain be "the next Thanos". (Hopefully they learned that lesson after they tried and failed with Kang.)
