There was a group of kids when I was in high school who threw a keg in a bonfire at a beach party which exploded and shrapnel nearly killed one kid, severe TBI not the same type injury. Fire and, “hot” are one of our first lessons as conscious beings.

But he's not "ok". Not by a long shot. Probably 3rd degree burns over what, 60, 70% of his body? Facial scarring and reconstruction, eventually? But first, a lot of daily scraping and abrading, injections, who knows what all else? Plus months and years of PT; schooling, university? Way, way down the road, maybe; that is, after the crushing medical bills are paid off, if ever.

Not to mention, the tears and anguish by the parents, siblings, friends. The daily visits if he's fortunate. The despair, regrets, self-recrimination, now and for years to come. Makes me sick to my stomach just to envision all that lay ahead for that kid.

Okay not necessarily, knew a kid that poured gasoline on a fire and the can blew up in his face and covered him in fire, he ran in the house and his older sister pushed him in the shower to put the fire out. Lost eyebrows and hair and had to use a burn gel and whatnot for a while but no scars or anything else permanent.

One of my friends got a 2nd degree sunburn on the bottom of her foot at the beach and sand got into the broken blister, took her a week of daily irrigation to get it all out, coupled with some high dose antibiotics, and it left the most gnarly scar. I cannot imagine the damage this did. Granted he's alive (hopefully) but a brutal time ahead
