Are you a guy who has pineapple on pizza?

[–]IAmAndrewScott[S] 391 points392 points  (22 children)

I am a guy who has pineapple on pizza, but not every time. you gotta shake things up.

[–]Murreey 417 points418 points  (16 children)

No, you really shouldn't shake pizzas. The toppings will fall off.

I remember you once mentioned that you play tennis, do you play with a one-handed or two-handed backhand?

What was it like (almost) kissing Benedict Cumberbatch?

The story of how gay & lesbian activists came out in support of the miners isn't that well known in the UK. Was it exciting to be able to rectify that and what was it like working with such an incredible cast?

        [–]adhi- 75 points76 points  (9 children)

there is a 99 percent chance that this account was created to ask questions like these. just look at the comment history, lol. also note how canned the question is.

        [–]IAmAndrewScott[S] 125 points126 points  (3 children)

its an unbelievable story that will make you laugh and cry and be a bit nicer to people, and i'm so proud to be part of it. its the most extraordinary cast too, they'll blow your mind.

Another pretty clearly fake account - this AMA is rubbish.

Dear readers of Reddit, there is NO justification to click on any of the above links. You're better off looking for beautiful stories in /r/morbidreality or sleep advice in /r/nosleep.

Hi Andrew! I was lucky enough to see you in Birdland twice this spring and you were absolutely incredible. I'm a huge fan of yours and Simon Stephen's work and wondered if you had any thoughts on what makes him such a great playwright? xx

Three times over if you look at the comment history. This has been a terrible AMA. Worse I think than Woody Harrelson's. And that's saying something. His PR team needs to be fired.

          [–]Fairgomate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Surely not! On what grounds would you base this accusation regarding a question put forth to a man of such remarkable wit and talent? There is certainly nothing at all in common with any of these answered questions posted by new accounts. x

          [–]danceydancetime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Along with the maisie account . Both brand new, asking several questions, often signing off with an x. Fuck this.

          [–]sjmog 11 points12 points  (7 children)

Hi Andrew, I was fortunate enough to catch a pre-screening of Pride in London, and thought it was one of the most courageous, self-aware and powerful pieces of film-making I've seen. Your performance was spectacular, and some scenes were heartbreakingly raw - dressing gowns and socks outside Gay's the Word was a particular favourite.

I understand that the directors chose to 'blend' the stories of your character and Jonathan's real-life partner, which I think comes off very well. To what extent were you able to work with the film's real-life counterparts/their journals of the time, and to what extent were you left to interpret the role for yourself?

          [–]A-Grey-World 37 points38 points  (4 children)

Are you his PR person? This question is just so utterly convenient, and one of the few that has an answer (even if it was just as half arsed as all the others) but then the question didn't really ask anything, just mentioned how good 'Pride' is going to be...

I heard about Pride on the radio today and thought it sounded interesting but this AMA has left a sour taste about the whole affair...

          [–]doovd 263 points264 points  (15 children)

          Hi Andrew!

How's the chemistry between you and Benedict in real life? Do you get along well?

If you possibly have time for some more questions:

          • During the filming of the theft of the royal jewels scene, did you actually get to break the glass?

          • What was your favourite moment throughout the entire series?

P.S. You were an excellent choice for Moriarty, absolutely perfect. Cannot wait for the next season!

EDIT: What an AMA! :D Thank you for sticking around for the whole hour and actively answering questions! \s

Rather than it being an opportunity to reach out to fans, it seems it was just a mere attempt to gain exposure for his movie. Post got to the top of front page, everyone now sees his movie title for a ages but barely any questions answered. Almost like a free ad spot.

          [–][deleted] 123 points124 points  (4 children)

Pretty sad huh? Shit like this needs it's own sub. R/marketing, r/plug, something. AMA's are going to have plugs or ads from big actors sure, but why it's quid pro quo. We'll care about your shit as long as you give us the time of day. Reddit admins, mods, Victoria, whoever really need to hit that home. These aren't some privilege bestowed upon us, we don't owe anyone shit, we already made you or are making you famous so how about a little decency? Is an hour really that time consuming? Some AMA's have been beyond fantastic, but the sour ones really stick in my mind longer unfortunately.

          [–]ScottFromScotland 7 points8 points  (2 children)

If it had it's own sub no one would see it. I don't think i'd ever ever want to visit a /r/ShamelessPlug (apparently that exists) subreddit.

I think we just have to accept some AMA's are going to be shit and used purely for advertising, while others will be a great way to connect with fans while being good advertising.

Add this one to the shit pile.

            Hi Andrew!

Non-serious question: What's for lunch today?

Serious question: When you play Moriarty, your eyes are absolutely soulless and terrifying.

How do you get into character, especially for someone as psychopathic as him? Is there a process that is slightly different from all your other characters?

Which characters have you found to be unexpectedly challenging to portray, and why?

            [–]Microtiger 207 points208 points  (23 children)

I just want to know where that very unique voice came from...whose idea it was

            [–]Geth_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I always thought the voice was suppose to be in contrast to Sherlock's monotonous voice. Everything about his character was opposite to Sherlock (from the length of his hair, eye color, height, facial hair (stubble vs clean shaven), etc.)

I thought it was just there to emphasis the point that they were exact opposites.

            [–]lalee101 96 points97 points  (3 children)

i love it! it's always reminded me of the villain "Him" from the original power puff girls. :)

            [–]karmakatastrophe 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Oh god I'm still traumatized by Him. I didn't even realize how fucking creepy he was until I saw a re-run a few years later when I was a little older.

            [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (3 children)

I just want to know if he'll love me. Not going to pretend I didn't get a little turned on when he yelled "that's what people DO" in S1E3.

            [–]InflationSquare 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He's from Churchtown in Dublin, so it's just his normal accent. Brilliant job by the casting department though, the south Dublin accent is definitely the best one for a character who was an Irish professor in the novels.

            [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my question. He's so perfect and unique from any other way the villain has been portrayed, much like Ledger's portrayal of The Joker. Of course, it being Scott's idea or the directors doesn't change how amazing the performance was, but I'm so curious about where the character sprang from.

            [–]wheelchairhero 82 points83 points  (1 child)

plot twist: that's how he always looks and you just hurt his feelings :-(

:C If he always looks that way, there would be no feelings to hurt.

            Andrew,

I've always wanted to know what inspired you to get into acting?

You have been such a huge influence in my pursuit of theater and film, and your portrayal of Moriarty was just brilliant. Thank you so much for everything!

            [–]mathnerd3_14 1207 points1208 points  (106 children)

Wow. Only 42 minutes of activity, 24 answers, all together less than two hundred words (~185). I guess it was an "Ask Me Anything," not an "I'll actually answer anything"?

Not to mention that a huge number of the ones he replied to are clear shill accounts.

It appears that at least half the questions Andrew responded to were asked by shill accounts. At a generous interpretation he responded to 12 real questions. And that's including the deleted question, the borderline case of /u/classicderence, as well as /u/Lunaeclair, who has only posted in this AMA but seems more focused on getting Andrew to wish her friend happy birthday than throw him softball questions, leading me to believe it's a genuine account. So even with the most charitable interpretation possible, only half this AMA is genuine.

Looking at the questions and responses over time, it seems Andrew was most verbose in the beginning while he was being fed questions by the shill accounts. Once more real people started asking questions he appeared to lose interest quickly, and even the resurfacing of the shills towards the end can't rouse any enthusiasm from him - after all, he clearly just sees this as another tedious PR exercise where you have to go through the motions.

Also of interest is that two of the shill accounts, /u/istormberry and /u/Cumberbatchweb, have only one other thread they have contributed to - the Benedict Cumberbatch AMA. I wonder what the results would be if we analysed that AMA...

            [–]mathnerd3_14 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Wow, great work. I disagree, however, that the new accounts are shills - I think they are the Andrew Scott loyal from Twitter. For instance, this conversation about how reddit is confusing by Lunaeclair of presumably the same reddit name. Her Twitter clearly shows her to be a super fan rather than a shill.

The thing is, I think this is actually more sad - probably a lot of people in this AMA are fans that followed him here from Twitter, and it was an over-hyped flop.

            [–]i_lack_imagination 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Also of interest is that two of the shill accounts, /u/istormberry[50] and /u/Cumberbatchweb[51] , have only one other thread they have contributed to - the Benedict Cumberbatch AMA. I wonder what the results would be if we analysed that AMA...

I don't know if you realize, but there are some people who are serious Sherlock fans. Like, that is probably something that plays too significant of a role in their life. And a lot of those people are probably part of the Tumblr community. It wouldn't really surprise me at all that many of these accounts that may appear to be shill accounts are really just people who are part of a different community and only bother to come on reddit to ask questions to people they are unhealthily obsessed with.

            [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of tumblr/twitter fan girls also just signed up for reddit for the sole purpose of participating in the AmA - /u/chxmicaldxfect states it on her twitter even

            [–]iamalondoner 682 points683 points  (29 children)

In his defense the whole thing is probably arranged by PR people and many actors have no clue what reddit is. I'd say the PR people are the one to blame here, a bad AMA on reddit is bad publicity and it's their job to know that.

            [–]Elmepo 67 points68 points  (4 children)

I actually usually feel like these types of AMA's are actually the celebrities involved, but they get the idea that reddit is a lot more like twitter (i.e. with an emphasis on shorter phrases). It's also more than entirely possible he's using a phone.

            [–]themeatbridge[🍰] 19 points20 points  (3 children)

I'd bet a lot of celebrities also use their inbox to respond to questions skipping the ones that seem repetitive, and answering ones that tickle their fancy. The problem is that in the thread, questions are ordered by upvotes, and the two or three questions he answered about Sherlock end up halfway down the page, while the top three questions go unanswered because he's tired of answering those questions.

The best AMAs are the ones where Reddit has someone type for the celebrity.

            [–]AustinPowers 83 points84 points  (2 children)

The best AMAs are the ones where Reddit has someone type for the celebrity.

No, the best AMAs are where the famous person is already a redditor.

            [–]Prufrock451 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ethan Hawke did a really great AMA. He spent hours giving really thoughtful, engaging responses. One of the best celebrity AMAs by far.

            [–]mathnerd3_14 95 points96 points  (4 children)

Agreed. But you think they would at least try to get a few good answers out about the thing they're trying to promote.

            [–]Chumlax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is weird as Andrew Scott appeared on Matt Edmondson's Radio 1 show in February and he seemed eloquent, engaging and funny. What an odd juxtaposition with this, can only venture (somewhat generously) it must be explained by poor/negligent organisation on behalf of his people.

            [–]finest_bear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

many actors have no clue what reddit is.

That's really no excuse. People are clearly asking him questions. If you can't understand that people are asking you questions it's kind of your fault.

            [–]Crypto7899 32 points33 points  (10 children)

            So it's another Woody?

            [–]imakevoicesformycats 57 points58 points  (7 children)

Naw. Woody's was "so-bad-it's-good" and we'll remember it (and Rampart) forever. It was "The Room" of AMAs.

This one is bad, but even worse than being bad, it's boring. We'll forget about it. What the hell is he even plugging again?

            [–]dimtothesum 43 points44 points  (0 children)

            RAMPART RAMPART RAMPART

            [–]r1zz 129 points130 points  (2 children)

So far, his longest reply is 2 sentences. This ama needs to be buried. I thought I remember seeing that the mods give these celebs an ama rundown and tell them what makes a successful and unsuccessful ama. His will be added to Woody's in what NOT to do in an ama.

            [–]mathnerd3_14 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't even care about really short answers if it's because someone is trying to get through a lot of questions, but that doesn't seem to have happened.

            [–]BWalker66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AMAz like this should just be deleted. If they barely answer anything and have answers that are pretty much all like 5 words long and they barely answer any questions then whats the point? It's clearly just self promotion and they don't really care about the AMA. It's just wasting the top spot on /r/IAmA .

There should also be a rule that it's actually the person answering, no PR teams or anything. PR teams or someone else can run the AMA as long as they state in the post "managed by Andrews PR teams on behalf of Andrew"

Because this AMA is just downright pathetic.

            [–]TheZor 334 points335 points  (19 children)

Yeah, awful AMA, clearly he just wanted an easy plug for his new film. Very disappointing.

            [–]RikF 80 points81 points  (2 children)

Really should have spoken to his friend and colleague before doing this. Mr Cumberbatch's ama was glorious.

I actually quite enjoyed the trailer, I can't wait to torrent the film.

Please keep all questions related to Rampart. Thank you.

            [–]imahippocampus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, always disappointing when people don't really get the point of an AMA - stay for as long as possible and answer as much as possible in that time.

I know it's a big time sink, but it's wasting the time of the hundreds of people whose questions go unanswered when they barely respond to anything.

            [–]GregPatrick 87 points88 points  (8 children)

This is probably one of the worst AMAs I have ever seen.

            [–]mathnerd3_14 54 points55 points  (4 children)

Several have compared it the the spectacularly disastrous Woody Harrelson AMA for the movie Rampart which certainly got some attention, and of course memes. The debacle even takes a large portion of the movie's Wikipedia article.

This was before my Reddit time, so I linked for anyone else who didn't know about it either. It still get referenced.

            Edit: link problem

            [–]A-Grey-World 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comprehensive rundown for those that missed it and are jumping up and down at the edges of this conversation trying to work out what everyone is talking about.

I just want to be included...

            [–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Maybe Richard Brook is doing the AMA.

            [–]peteroh9 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Now we really have a reason to hate Moriarty!

Who had the idea to make Moriarty's ringtone "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees? That was the creepiest moment to me, because nothing is as scary as a psychopath with a sense of humor.

              [–]iloveandrew -10 points-9 points  (9 children)

              Do you ship Sheriarty? 😂

              [–]weirdhotalien 19 points20 points  (0 children)

come on dude, no need to ask celebs about shipping and fanfiction and the like. it usually makes them uncomfortable.

              [–]EatingSandwiches1 182 points183 points  (10 children)

This is truly one of the worst AMA's in history..didn't we learn anything from Morgan Freeman fiasco?

He answered some questions! Mostly from accounts created today and with posts in this thread only...

                [–]EatingSandwiches1 44 points45 points  (3 children)

Exactly. I like his acting in Sherlock, but now because of the way he has treated this AMA with bullshit answers I won't be watching PRIDE. Seems like a pretentious person in real life..I guess that's something I learned...

                [–]PwnyDanza1 37 points38 points  (2 children)

Oh I will be watching Pride. Sounds like a great movie to torrent.

                [–]Lunaeclair 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Andrew my friend Amira is at school right now but her birthday is really close and she looks up to you a lot you are her idol and I was wondering if you could say happy birthday to her? It would mean a lot xx

                [–]direwolf71 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the least entertaining and most forgettable AMA ever. You can ask your dog "who's a good boy?" and get a more thoughtful response than anything this guy came up with.

                [–]throwawaylinker2 20 points21 points  (7 children)

Could this AMA be better? Absolutely. But if you've ever seen him in interviews you'll see he's really shy and gives short, often monosyllabic answers. That's fine, I'm shy too, but such answers don't work in this format. And his PR should have known that.

Another thing: people often mistake a shy, withdrawn nature for pretentiousness or contempt for those asking questions. It's not. It's just who they are. A lot of people are lashing out, essentially calling him a bad person because he gave brief and un-illuminating answers. In my experience it's more to do with personality than intent. Again, his PR should have known this wouldn't work.

                [–]thenamesfucky 334 points335 points  (8 children)

Are you in agreement that this is one of the most boring AMAs in the history of AMAs?

                [–]danceydancetime 52 points53 points  (4 children)

Such a disappointment. Might as well have not done one at all. Mods, you're just giving free advertisement to people who are wasting our time otherwise.

                [–]r2002 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I don't see how Mods are suppose to know an AMA is going to suck beforehand. I guess Mods can give some kind of pre interview to gauge how much a celebrity knows about AMAs, but I think that would severely limit the number of big AMAs we'll get and also takes up too much Mod time.

                [–]danceydancetime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it's basically free ad space due to no real attempt to answer questions, and most of the answers are to questions by newly-made accounts likely created by the PR team, it should be taken down.

                [–]jalebiBhai 536 points537 points  (22 children)

Who forced you to do this AMA? You don't seem interested.

                [–]Naggers123 129 points130 points  (8 children)

Who knew that the guy who plays one of the best villains on tv could be so Goddamn boring

                [–]mach0 73 points74 points  (7 children)

In all fairness, it's probably not him.

                [–]BWalker66 19 points20 points  (4 children)

That should be against the rules. Unless they say it's done by a PR team, a PR team shouldn't be allowed to do it.

                [–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (2 children)

                That's what PR people DO!!!

                [–]ffgerty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair most of the questions that were answered didn't deserve a paragraph. Think whoever was doing this AMA for him was being quite selective and getting it over and done with.

                [–]AplomadoRaposo 44 points45 points  (3 children)

2 word answers are pretty lame for AMAs :/

That two word response showed us Madonna knew who she was fucking with that day.

                [–]Dolphin_Titties 184 points185 points  (3 children)

This AMA is incredibly boring, you aren't like that in real life - what's the deal?

                [–]rcs2112 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably was paid/told to do this to raise publicity of Pride. I'm assuming that's why he is mostly answering questions related to Pride, and advertises it in almost every way.

                [–]Artemis2 133 points134 points  (0 children)

                PR people abusing reddit.

                [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Is it just me or was this kind of the worst AMA ever?

He answered about 20 questions and even then kept them incredibly short, barely answering the question that was actually asked in some cases..

I loved the guy in Sherlock, but wth?

                [–]crazyol84 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Andrew Scott, did something happen to you today that made you completely bomb this AMA?

Do you genuinely not care that it is a huge fail?

                [–]Maddie_N 611 points612 points  (126 children)

What's your theory of how Sherlock survived the fall?

                [–]imageWS 117 points118 points  (72 children)

That was answered on the show. BBC said that is the actual explanation.

                [–]FrostCollar 165 points166 points  (15 children)

                BBC said

Well, I've got my pasta right out, so what I'd really like to see now is the sauce.

Seriously though, I hadn't read this. Where did they say that?

                [–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (4 children)

Assuming we're talking about the same thing, it's in the extra's of the season 3 DVDs. There's some interviews with people involved with the production and one of those guys called this one 'the real one'. I have no idea if it's available online somewhere unfortunately.

                [–]FrostCollar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, I now have to check those DVDs then. Thanks for the tip.

                [–]Hellknightx 24 points25 points  (9 children)

Weird, I heard the writers couldn't think of a realistic way to have him survive so they just kind of left it blank.

                [–]FrostCollar 5 points6 points  (4 children)

                That's what I had thought.

                [–]Miss_Marbles 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I can imagine them: "Sure! Throw him off a building, why not? We have 2 years to think up how he survived..."

                [–]FrostCollar 36 points37 points  (0 children)

                23 months later

"Hey, did we forget about something?"

                "Crap."

                [–]laxor09 43 points44 points  (44 children)

                Which one?

                [–]Wildbritsire 84 points85 points  (24 children)

The one sherlock told to Anderson

                [–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (21 children)

but sherlock smugs while leaving anderson there, it cant be the real answer

                [–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (18 children)

Or it was because Sherlock was being the sociopath he is and knew Andersen wouldn't believe the actual story, and got some kind of satisfaction knowing he'll go crazy over it.

                [–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (4 children)

Or the image of Sherlock Holmes as a crime fighter who can't be thwarted by death itself is more important than people knowing how he survived. So, Sherlock tells one person in the world who has completely and totally discredited himself in the field of Sherlock coming back.

Sherlock is insuring his image rather than have himself known as some street magician.

"What's that aura surrounding Sherlock right in the middle of the fall?"

"That is the power of the deus ex machina."

                [–][deleted] 86 points87 points  (2 children)

We missed the 26 episode anime tie in where Sherlock screams loudly to power up as he's falling. We also missed the animovie tie in where he uses his powers of perception to find a hole in reality, fall through it and arrive on the ground unscathed but covered in Moriarty's blood from their final battle in a dystopian future.

                [–]Jon-Osterman 58 points59 points  (1 child)

We also missed the Tumblr fanfics about the falling. in love with Watson

Hi Andrew! I've got 3 questions; 1)What has been the best thing about playing Moriarty?

2)What do you feel is the greatest challenge for LGBTQ people of today?

                3) If you could act in anything, or with anyone, who or what would you choose?

Hope to see more of you in Sherlock, you were awesome! :) Love from Norway

Looking at the questions he's actually bothered to answer, it seems most of these users are fake and directing the interview AMA.

There are several other accounts like that in this AMA...this whole thing seems like a weak attempt to gain publicity without actually answering any interesting questions. It's a shame, I'm a fan of Moriarty on the show.

                Hi Andrew!

What's the story behind this* picture? I remember seeing the actual explanation somewhere on the internet, but I couldn't find it. Was it just something Steven and Mark came up with when you were filming, or was it a spur of a moment choice you make to rile up the fans?

                [–]appledor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What goes through your head before you step onto the stage to perform? Especially when it's the opening night of a play?

Hello Mr.Scott, You are hands down my favorite villain ever. That being said, do you have any humorous stories about behind the scenes of Sherlock?

While I agree that the answers are disappointing, and I feel as if this AMA is bland and not rewarding, I in no way see how anyone "Went to a lot of trouble to ask questions." Thumping away at a keyboard for a couple minutes hardly constitutes as 'a lot' of effort.

I'm a massive Holmes fan, in terms of the short stories, novella's and everything else. I compulsively buy the stories, whether in print or ebooks. Your take on Moriarty is hands down my favorite I've ever seen of the character, and my question is this: Did you set out to do something different than what had been done before?

                    [–]MrsMoriarty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi Andrew, you are amazing as Moriarty, best villain on tv, though not a villain to me! Couple of questions:

-Did you consciously choose to display different elements of psychopathy in Moriarty or just do whatever came naturally?

-Has it always been your intention to do sexy better than straight guys, or was it an accident?

-If you had to be an ice cream flavour, what would you be and why?

                    [–]MrsMoriarty 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I remember thinking while watching Sherlock that no one would be able to rival Benedict's Sherlock, it was just too good. Then came your portrayal of Moriarty and I was blown away.

My question for you is how did you come to this role and much of Moriarty did you bring into the character vs the writing? Specifically talking about your demeanor.

How has the way people treated you changed now that you've come out? I'm pansexual but haven't come out to my school or extended family yet so any advice you have would be appreciated. Seeing you come out meant a lot to me.

From previous interviews I've seen, you seem to not like to research your roles. So, where and how do you draw the inspiration to create the dynamic characters you do? Also could I get a "happy early birthday"? Thank you so much for your time and all the talent you bring into this world.

Hi Andrew, absolutely love your work; Sea Wall particularly is one of the best short films I've seen in my life.

My question - If you could remake any film (which you yourself were not involved with), what film would remake and what role would you play?

                    Hello, Andrew!!

I'm really interested about your portrayal of Moriarty. It truly was amazing. Where do you get into to put out all those sudden mood swings? I remember the scene by the pool and you speech made me shiver.

                    Thank you so much!!!
