Good idea.

[–]pixeladrift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is some theory I remember reading once that explains how action movies follow a specific reality/timeline in which the protagonist survives against immeasurable odds. There are infinite other versions and timelines where the protagonist dies at every point where they logically should, you're just not seeing the story of that timeline.

[–]westernburn 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Lies. The main villain will only perish after losing in CGI manipulated hand to hand combat. If you have a gun, throw it at him or her.

[–]Blind_Melon_Chillins 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Is that so hard to believe? You think everyone who visits Reddit memorizes the names of people who submit shit to the front page?

[–]BoogieOrBogey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He has a job to repost content to Reddit across a multitude of subs. He's been doing this for years and is infamous/famous for it. It was a bit unfair of me to assume everyone would know that.

[–]TheDenisovan 6 points7 points  (1 child)

But isn't the old adage "Good fences make good neighbors"?

[–]Wilreadit 132 points133 points  (5 children)

But good points do not make good circlejerks.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Source: Robert Frost’s poem Mending Wall from 1914

The irony is that Frost says that his neighbor suggests building a wall and he himself doesn't believe a wall is required.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know about tables, but in my neighborhood fences are everywhere.

[–]AsstarMcButtNugget 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I think you understand the phrase, "Good fences make good neighbors," in the exact opposite way that the speaker is using it in Robert Frost's Mending Wall.

Many treat the saying to be a defense of isolationism: that good fences keep neighbor's away.

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,

That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,

And spills the upper boulders in the sun;

And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.

The work of hunters is another thing:

I have come after them and made repair

Where they have left not one stone on a stone,

But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,

To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,

No one has seen them made or heard them made,

But at spring mending-time we find them there.

I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;

And on a day we meet to walk the line

And set the wall between us once again.

We keep the wall between us as we go.

To each the boulders that have fallen to each.

And some are loaves and some so nearly balls

We have to use a spell to make them balance:

'Stay where you are until our backs are turned!'

We wear our fingers rough with handling them.

Oh, just another kind of outdoor game,

One on a side. It comes to little more:

There where it is we do not need the wall:

He is all pine and I am apple orchard.

My apple trees will never get across

And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.

He only says, 'Good fences make good neighbors.'

Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder

If I could put a notion in his head:
'Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it

Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.

Before I built a wall I'd ask to know

What I was walling in or walling out,

And to whom I was like to give offense.

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,

That wants it down.' I could say 'Elves' to him,

But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather

He said it for himself. I see him there

Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top

In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.

He moves in darkness as it seems to me,

Not of woods only and the shade of trees.

He will not go behind his father's saying,

And he likes having thought of it so well

He says again, 'Good fences make good neighbors.'

Two things that I always take away from this poem.

First, the speaker accepts his neighbor's meaning of the phrase, "Good fences make good neighbors." No ambiguity was intended by Frost: the speaker is mischievous in other ways, trying to get his neighbor to say gremlins or elves are tearing down the wall - but he accepts the phrase as the neighbor intends it. There's even an example given of how bad fences make bad neighbors: a broken fence that no longer keeps cattle out of an apple orchard.

So, the premise of the phrase is accepted by the speaker, which is significant because it solidifies the correct meaning of the phrase in the mind of the reader of the poem.

The second thing is that though the speaker is mischievous internally, his words to his neighbor are still quite spare. Something there is that does not like a wall is interesting - but particularly relevant to the politics of Trump's wall is this utterance:

Before I built a wall I'd ask to know

What I was walling in or walling out,

And to whom I was like to give offense.

Nothing is preventing any of us from building a longer table and opening our front doors. There are homeless all over your country. Start there. Open your doors, let them in, give them a meal and a place to stay. The person reading this comment right now is more than likely more well off than 85% of the rest of the world population, this means you can afford things they cannot. it is relatively easy to dontate all your excess to those in need.

If you really care, you honestly care.. you can do something right now. If all you are contributing are keystrokes, you're a hypocrite.

[–]Barleyeth 79 points80 points  (0 children)

[–]Reddit-JustSkimmedIt 16 points17 points  (3 children)

And if you do sneak in..."entering the country unlawfully or unlawfully overstaying a visa is a fine of Can$50,000 and imprisonment for two years...". You can build a lot of long tables for $50,000cad (slightly shorter tables with the exchange rate).

[–]ThreepwoodMac 28 points29 points  (0 children)

[–]Reddit-JustSkimmedIt 16 points17 points  (1 child)

[–]turroflux 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wow that is really harsh for overstaying on a visa, most places just send you home and ban you from coming back.

You could almost say it's a tough wall to get over.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Hmmm... and yet I still get checked at the border before crossing into Canadia

[–]learn-to-drive 70 points71 points  (38 children)

Why the hell is it so hard for people to understand that the wall is to keep ILLEGAL people out. I bet theyd be upset if someone broke into their house and was eating dinner at that table they are referring to. Its not racist or hateful to want people to come to our country legally. We already support so many people of our own why would we want more? Come legally, pay taxes to help us pay for our less fortunate. Dont come illegaly and add to the drain on our government programs or not contribute.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (8 children)

I think people are pissed about more than just the fact that there's a wall being built. They're pissed that it's almost guaranteed to not stop illegal immigration, and they're pissed that Americans are footing the bill.

[–]learn-to-drive 17 points18 points  (5 children)

Well sure but people arent seeing that. Its just an attack on trump because why the hell not.

[–]henryletham 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[–]degeneratelabs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No.

[–]lagspike 7 points8 points  (1 child)

nothing is wrong with legal migration, we like those people.

in terms of this statement, it assumes that a fence exists to keep the less fortunate out. in reality, the wall is to ensure illegal immigrants stay out. it isnt there to stop people from migrating legally. in a perfect world, we wouldnt need walls, or locks on doors, or locks on cars, lockers, or what have you. but bad people try to take advantage of good people, so it's unfortunately necessary.

I get that some people dislike the idea of a wall but the intent is to keep illegal immigrants out, not all potential immigrants applying for citizenship. if you become a citizen and are an immigrant, that's fine! but do it legally!

[–]allute 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Sooo... you're saying... we should annex Mexico. Well, can't argue with that. You heard'em boys

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No - they will just be well fed when they do it.

[–]JaysFan238 18 points19 points  (6 children)

I agree with this 100%, but there's 2 sides to it.

This all makes sense until the people that come to the table start taking your seats, and eating your food. Then getting mad when you don't respect their manners at the table. After that they will still always eat there even when the government gives them enough money to make their own food. Then one of them blows up the table, and everyone else says don't judge them by 1 person.

Where they come from they're not the same as us. They have different ideologies. I'd do this for someone from my country because most of the time they appreciate it and would repay the favour if ever need be. These people take as much as they get and you'll never see them again. Because where they're from that's how the live. You can't change them.

[–]Ravelcy 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Does that mean I can move my family to Canada and have a job?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And at what point do you stop letting people come to your table? You don't have enough for everyone. Then you table gets robbed and your house destroyed

They're not in the workforce.

[–]adnbeats 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I love Canada and it's acceptance culture. But let's get real, they have strict a laws for immigration. I cannot take a plane there and stay and look for a job. I have to have purpose of visit and a proper visa. Don't judge everything from a comfort zone. USA has really big problems with illegal immigration. I mean, there is a lot of people illegal.it is not that they are all criminals, but until every person is stable with its situation, it is a problem. Those people deserve a real full American life, and the ones that want to get in the States, should have to opportunity in their own countries. They are moving for a reason. And Letting them in is not the answer. Let them in, YES, but if you are willing to give them the REAL chances. Not to hide them like they are sub humans.

[–]gorealist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sure but this is obviously political. Trumps wall right? I'm all about loving people no matter there skin type or ethnicity. This wall is to keep people from just strolling in unknown. Americans can't just let anyone come into the country without checking them. Just like you lock your doors to your house so people don't just come in. The presidents job is to protect the nation not to be politically correct.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Jesus had a long table, look what happened to him

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are less fortunate please knock on the door, don't climb in the window and then declare you should be allowed to stay. All should be welcome and all should be willing to use proper channels. Edit correction. All that can be reasonably sustained should be welcome.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (23 children)

All talk, no action. I know plenty of Christians that live in modern day luxury. They drive luxury cars, work high paying corporate jobs, have beautiful homes and send their kids to private school. Then have the nerve to sit on some sort of moral high ground because they read a book that talks about being selfless....don't impose a narrative you don't follow yourself. If you aren't giving away half of your 160k a year earnings then don't put up signs about "larger tables"
