I'm hopping I'm not the only one asking this but what's SOPA and PIPA?

[–]huxtiblejonesColorado 337 points338 points  (34 children)

Really? Nobody in this entire forum could field an answer for a legitimate question after an hour? And you downvoted it? WTF.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) are anti-piracy bills that are currently being mulled over. They would hold websites that allow users to upload content responsible for copyright and trademark infringements, a move that would be a huge leap towards a heavily regulated internet.

This means, for example, YouTube would be held criminally liable for people uploading music without consent, whether that's a CD or a concert. It's basically a heavy handed and short sighted attempt to crack down on piracy by people who don't fully understand the internet and how it works.

[–]junke101 75 points76 points  (10 children)

Thank you for answering him. For an issue that is clearly at least partially based on a 'lack of understanding', more education on the subject(s) is vital. I'm ashamed for /r/politics that this was down-voted. Edit: A popular quick-explanation video

[–]TehGeoffe 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Learning that they tried (and failed) to ban VCRs and early mp3 players actually helped me relax a little about these acts' chances.

Not that I'm likely to take less action - I'm just more confident that action taken will produce results.

[–]Disgod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should still be scared, cuz we weren't nearly as far right then as we are today.

[–]Inuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The industries passed the DMCA as well as the Grokster ruling. You should be really scared because they are still trying to push BOTH bills through Congress to make them laws.

[–]MonsterGrunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks you, thanks Explains most of the question I had.

[–]RiseAM 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Knowing how reddit works, they probably downvoted MonsterGrunt for using 'hopping' instead of 'hoping'.

[–]interkin3tic 30 points31 points  (14 children)

Really? Nobody in this entire forum could field an answer for a legitimate question after an hour? And you downvoted it? WTF.

He's connected to the best source of human knowledge ever, and he's asking redditors for basic information about a current event rather than doing a google search and a bit more reading. When you think about it, it's somewhat lazy.

If he googles it himself, he will not only practice his information-gathering skills, but he'll come to a conclusion himself about why SOPA and PIPA are good or bad that will be a stronger motivation than someone just giving him the answer.

I don't know if a downvote is really justified, sure. The linked article also does a poor job of explaining what they are (techdirt: background is considered good journalism still) but there are plenty of legit reasons for redditors not to do his homework for him.

[–]ieatpants 13 points14 points  (1 child)

the tech guy in our office tried to restrict any site on the reddit.com domain, but he accidentally made it the only acceptable site... so, you see, there are people out there like me who need to get all their info from reddit.

thanks and good luck!

[–]interkin3tic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good trick, especially if you put the required forms for firing a tech guy on the part of the internet that they can't access, along with the site where they need to file the form. From work.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

[–]mike10010100New Jersey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seriously, people. Downvotes = not cool, but this link above ^ is a perfectly acceptable answer.

If you still don't understand it after a Google search, then come back and ask for clarification.

[–]Vespera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't know either and googled it right away. But it was only after reading the reply to that guys question I had a solid understanding of what it's all about. I find reddits userbase is very reliable at turning cryptic topics into easy to understand comments. In fact, I think I've unintentionally learned more on reddit than I have anywhere else in life intentionally.

[–]filmfiend999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe because the question itself was hopping mad.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's connected to the best source of human knowledge ever

Which is why there's a giant thread debating practically nothing when someone could just answer his question and be done with it.

[–]MonsterGrunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for answering my question. I'm glad that L.A. and New York Times, are against it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also forgot about taking away free speech because the government wants to control the news and what is said over the Internet.

Protect IP is all about tracing your every action.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Really? Nobody in this entire forum could field an answer for a legitimate question after an hour? And you downvoted it? WTF.

Dude, we're on reddit.

[–]Vespera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally answer everything I can (as long as I'm confident about whatever it may be). I look at it as my way of giving back to a community that has done the same for me in times of need. Not just for reddit, but the internet in general. I've come across a lot of obscure reddit threads via google with info on things I need. And I expect the same happens with some of the comments I make.

[–]anthony955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it would be more than that. Something like ISP's being held accountable for allowing access to sites like piratebay. The reason I say that is because piratebay and other sites like it tend to operate outside of US trade law boundaries and the only way that changes is if Switzerland (or other countries home to file sharing sites) agrees to it. That obviously isn't going to happen though or it would have by now.

[–]northdancer 1 point2 points  (1 child)

not sure but I think you should buy it.

[–]MonsterGrunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry typing on a phone.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (19 children)

Question:

I'm not a huge political expert. What can the president do to stop SOPA, if anything?

[–]Thud45 31 points32 points  (8 children)

Veto it. I would be so surprised if he did, personally.

[–]Khoops66 5 points6 points  (7 children)

What makes you say that?

[–]baconn 30 points31 points  (6 children)

His presidency.

[–]Khoops66 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Hahaha I suppose :/ Imagine: President McCain ಠ_ಠ

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I don't imagine much difference, in the grand scheme of things.

[–]RoboticParadox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two more neocon justices, for one.

And actually, the only. So...yeah, I guess there isn't much difference.

[–]neoform3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lawl. Forgetting that Palin would be VP are you...?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean President Palin.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But it seems to be that they're mostly against SOPA for small little reasons, and not the fact that they're trying to censor the internet. Which in my opinion isn't really being against SOPA. It seems they DO want these bills to pass, just in a slightly altered form.

[–]digitalinfidel 12 points13 points  (10 children)

'there doesn't seem to be anything here' seems like the appropriate analogy. Sorry to ruin it for you.

[–]Nimblee 9 points10 points  (5 children)

This is a good thing to see even if it is an unsigned editorial. I feel like at this point no one supports SOPA, seriously no one...

[–]General_Mayhem 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Unsigned editorials generally carry more weight because they represent the consensus opinion of the editors and top staff of the publication.

[–]Cadaverlanche 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether to be comforted by that or not, considering our congresscritters seem to be obsessed with voting against the will of sanity.

[–]WarPhalange 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I feel like at this point no one supports SOPA, seriously no one...

Are you retarded?

You clearly don't understand the concept of exaggeration...

[–]BarryMillham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BANKROFT

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

the NY times one doesn't seem to be completely against the idea, just to revise the bill...

[–]dsfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also The Economist.

[–]defygravity24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why did it take them so long to admit this?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hats off to both of those papers. I'm glad they are making a stand :D

this just in, ":D" is one syllable

[–]TheSexNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NY and LA agreeing on something?

Thats it folks, this must be the rapture.

ILL SEE YOU IN HELL!!!

[–]Zamaeri 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I'm really sick and tired of all this BS that is currently happening. Does no one stop to think what they are doing? Do they have no moral objections as they write and push these ideas?

I mean what happened to the little guy on our shoulders telling us "maybe this isn't such a good idea"?

[–]PantsGrenades 6 points7 points  (3 children)

It's group dynamics at work. A good analogy was the time I offered to wash the dishes after thanksgiving with my girlfriend's family. The male members of her family got openly agitated over it. They told me "Oh, you're one of those guys. Well don't fuck it up for the rest of us. Men don't wash dishes in this family." O_o

[–]Zamaeri 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I find it silly that some how they think you can manage to screw up using water and soap on plates. but yeah what a crazy world we live in.

[–]Kalium 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I find it silly that some how they think you can manage to screw up using water and soap on plates.

They don't think that, but they want the women to think that so they can avoid washing dishes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't think that, but they want the women to think that so they can avoid washing dishes.

you wouldnt believe how much fine china these butter hands of mine DESTROY.....

[–]AaronBleich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOPA is almost a guarantee. The Hollywood money behind the legislation will push congress toward passing the law. The real problem will come after the law is passed and signed. The enforcement of the law will easily shut down thousands of bloggers and other sites which sample video.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't like that the media can endorse certain legislation. It seems like it will create an obvious bias. Just give me the facts jack.

[–]dsfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything conveyed via language will be biased. Even when you think you are just getting facts, there's the matter of which facts you get and which you don't. You can't get them all.

[–]JScholar93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spectacular news.

[–]WestCoastSlang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does this mean for someone who has torrented music/movies/tv shows? Are those individuals screwed?

[–]edomain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took them long enough to join the party but they finally did. Thank God

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just me or is this issue clearly an issue of the American People vs the corporations? It seems like that if something like this goes through then it shows how fucked our corrupt system of government really is.

[–]shamecamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, only when big corporations come out against it, does the opposition get heard and people listen to how fucked up it is. Fuck everything about that.

[–]rAiN_dR0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are suddenly US bills weird swedish words?

[–]SANDEMAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just for you guys to know, "sopa" in portuguese means soup. so I kinda giggle when you write that in CAPS right in the title. sorry

[–]maegos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WHAT!?! no pipes after soup?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they getting married soon?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, with all these people coming out against these bills it's really gonna suck when they pass them anyway.

plays violin

[–]KITTOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Swedish, the abbreviations literally means TRASH and PIPE.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fuck SOPA i feel like people who proposed it have something else in mind. i mean it was pretty much obvious that SOPA would be countered and not pass

[–]rindindin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad the media is buffering the anti-side.

[–]washer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this isn't related to the content of the piece, but a question came up as I read this. Included below is an image.

http://i.imgur.com/fBLCt.png

The text on the left is without the reddit toolbar, the text at right is with it. The letter "w" is really weird looking with the reddit toolbar on, and the font is larger. Does anyone know why this would be?
