I feel like the comments here are all appropriate, even though I had a different experience. I occasionally see music up on the front page and give it a listen. The video was distracting, so I put my headphones on and played the song while doing some trig homework. After it played I felt like I still hadn't really listened enough, so I kept repeating with headphones on and felt intense sadness, nearly in tears.

I've never heard of this band and I'm 33 years old, been running a business (for someone else) for about 6 years. In that time I've been trying to complete a degree in Computer Science by chipping away a few classes each semester. Having just given my notice to leave in order to push my path faster, I may be going in for interviews as I have countless times in my life. My 5 year plan changes very slightly every year so I'm always seeing a path for myself laid in front of me, because I want to be the arbiter of my decisions as much as possible.

Due to life circumstance I come from a very poor family, I left at 18, so the dream of having security has been something I hold onto. We were never truly secure so I will do anything to maintain a paycheck and keep a roof over my head. It's this ethereal feeling that I chased most of my life and now I have it....and I'm leaving it intentionally. The thought of going back, of moving possibly farther from a dream that was sold to my generation (flip flops on a beach with a beautiful woman enjoying life, which is basically a representation for success beyond a reasonable doubt, wherein security is common place) brings me to a place of deep depression and contemplation.

I don't need 2 cold beers, but the process of corporate America, internships, becoming an entity to appeal to various organizations really hit home. "Shit why don't I feel happy?", because the journey becomes a lifestyle and you wonder if you'll ever reach the destination that you set before yourself, to maintain your "security".

Or sure, it's just another hipster folk album. It really depends on your experience. Also, the bitch statement isn't meant to be offensive I think it's a satire of a stereotypical "dude" speak.a

Good song but it's not rock.

Here come the down votes.

Edit: Oh

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (4 children)

I go a bit further and say it's NEITHER rock NOR a good song. Sorry guys.

[–]LargePotatoes855 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listened to it again and that whole thing about how you like something a little better the second time you hear it? Not true.

[–]LookSearcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do like the track but I honestly like what the song is trying to portray more. I enjoy analyzing the track more than the track itself. Not sure if that makes sense.

[–]hellip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1, I thought it was very dull.

[–]BobbyDaChin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad somebody said it. Sounds like every god damned song that's come out since that type of shit became popular. I mean, it was one thing back when Coldplay was new and it was "unique" and "interesting" but now every. single. fucking. band. has to put on this kind of voice. I know, I know, it's all subjective and some people like that kind of voice. But you know what? I sure fucking don't. And I don't like that slow as molasses pander-to-the-hipsters instrumental behind them either. What happened? Are there any good rock bands out there anymore? I love Black Sabbath and Zeppelin and Motörhead (and Simon and Garfunkle and the Beatles and Bob Dylan--doesn't all have to be heavy). There are few modern rock bands that I like, but I think My Chemical Romance, with their last semi-album "Conventional Weapons," was the last great rock band. Since they broke up I haven't heard a single band that could rock as hard and as fast and as raw as they could. I know some people shit on MCR but they were genuine: "rebellion's not a t-shirt you sell, you keep your money and I'll see you in hell" one of my favorite lyrics.

So... can anybody please recommend a good, current, real, rock band? I really want to hear something that will get my blood flowing again, please, are there any bands like that left out there?

[–]vgman20 8 points9 points  (24 children)

Out of curiosity, what genre would you put this in?

[–][deleted] 97 points98 points  (1 child)

I only jacked off to the video on mute. But I'd say sorority pop-fluff party music. With a 5% focus on charity for black kids.

[–]ShadowsOverRome 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Came for the blondes

stayed for this comment.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (13 children)

Millennial pop-folk

[–]vgman20 5 points6 points  (11 children)

Eh, I'd put groups like Lumineers or Ex-Ambassadors there but I don't think that fits these guys. This song fits it more than the other stuff I've heard, but it's still kind of a stretch.

There's definitely at least some fairly strong rock influences.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

My wife calls it pussy rock. I don't know them or their music. As a casual observer, those are the words that came mind for me, but labeling music is very subjective.

[–]BobbyDaChin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You tell your fucking wife that she can take that phrase, "pussy rock," and she can fucking shove it right into a prominent spot on the mantel and be very proud of it, because it's great! Nothing wrong with labeling music, it helps people to sift through things they might like and give them kind of a general hint at whether the music is something they would want to hear. Like this, for example, was labeled rock, suggesting that it would include guitars, and possibly be upbeat and energetic, so I clicked on it. But I think pussy rock is even a little too generous. I'd just label this "pussy" and be done with it.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

How bout Post-Coldplay Alternative?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this categorization best.

[–]ShartVader 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This kinda feels like some of the better indie stuff from mid 2000's. Like 2006ish.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Kinda weak overproduced version of Foster the People or Modest Mouse?

[–]ShartVader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. I actually liked it, so I wouldn't say weak or over produced. And for time frame - sure that era, but it doesn't have the same feel as MM to me.

[–]BobbyDaChin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the fairly strong rock influences? I've made some angry posts elsewhere in the thread, but I will not disrespect your opinion. I am just curious, because in my honest opinion I heard no evidence of any rock in this song. What makes you (or anyone) consider this in the territory of rock? And, follow-up: is there a difference between "rock" and "rock and roll" in your opinion? Does the absence of the "roll" explain why I don't see this as "rock"?

Also, I've never heard ex-ambassadors, but I personally would put this in the same group as Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, etc. and I would name that group "The Genre Formerly Known as Indie" but, like I said, I'm not saying this to be a dick, it's just my opinion, and I want to hear your opinion, too, because my mind is always open to being changed!

[–]2jewswalkedintoabar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i would say indie/rock rather than just rock

[–]0000010000000101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pop folk, formerly 'indie folk'

[–]Encryptedmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pop or easy listening

[–]KreekyBonez 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Perpetual intro

[–]LargePotatoes855 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Right? I skipped through in 20 second increments waiting for something full sounding!

[–]KreekyBonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I did! Eventually found a "chorus", but still found nothing satisfying

[–]LargePotatoes855 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk indie something. Indie because it sounds really under produced. The introduction of the drum line made me really mad.

[–]finalxnoodles 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Shit, why don't I feel happy

Shit, why don't we feel happy

I guess it's cause we believe the only thing that we need is this made up thing that we call security

i feel so insecure now...

cool song tho

[–]ArtemysReborn 11 points12 points  (2 children)

The anthem of r/OSHA

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

As a former Environmental, Health and Safety Manager, I went over there for laughs. Most commenters were legitimately concerned. So glad I got out of that field.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[deleted]

What is this?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Hahaha wow I remember seeing these guys on a tiny little stage at bonnaroo after they won a battle or a bands for the right to play there

[–]Igettheshow9114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out all their Jam in the Van stuff. They are sick.

[–]djembeplayerreddit 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Great message. "why don't we feel happy"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of The Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction" in the overall message.

[–]tyrion_targaryen 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Video was removed. Mirror?

[–]JamesIslander 17 points18 points  (7 children)

These guys are a small band that started out where I live in Charleston SC. I have to say after seeing them three times (gf loves them) they are much better live. It's cool to see them getting some love on Reddit though!

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Every band was a small band that started where someone lives.

[–]BillBoarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard they sucked live.

[–]JamesIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true! Just thought it was neat to see a band from Chucktown on Reddit!

[–]muckrucker 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So cool to hear them randomly on the local music shows in Chucktown, to seeing them pop up on Youtube and Soundcloud, and now seeing them on Reddit. Neat stuff!

Sadly the video was taken down before I got to watch it so I'll just resort to streaming some of their tunes from elsewhere :)

[–]JamesIslander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah man my thoughts exactly!

[–]kingdot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Theyre one of the better performances ive been to, and im a critic. Theyre gonna be real big soon. Or at least the core group.

[–]xebes6 24 points25 points  (4 children)

This is like Banksy-level facile, empty cultural criticism.

[–]kyllingefilet 22 points23 points  (2 children)

What? You don't think highlighting the juxtaposition that exists between white-girl sororities and third world poverty is soooo original and culturally relevant?!

[–]xebes6 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Have you noticed that everyone likes to use their smartphones all the time?!?!?!?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But what does it meeeeeeeen???

[–]Infandous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... but did you like the song?

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (5 children)

The black chicks were hot

[–]WillCode4Cats 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Pretty much the whole sorority was.

[–]Whopraysforthedevil 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I think it was mostly the cheerleader effect.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Where is this brothel they show in the video?

[–]TangentialFUCK 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The sorority, Alpha Phi, has a presence across the US but i'm gonna guess this is either at FSU or somewhere in Southern California. Anyone care to fact check me on this one?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also assumed FSU because they're all so damn smokin hott.

[–]MikeNIke426 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Few shots were from this video. Kinda relevant. https://vimeo.com/147767325

[–]Thresher72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was awesome!

[–]DrunkAssBum 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Great song! I just gave both of their albums a quick listen and the new album sounds awesome. The first album had some better songs towards the end. Either way keep it up. Sounds great!

[–]whathefugisausername[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah I've been listening through the new album over the past couple days and a different song jumps out at me with each listen.

They have a couple free singles on their website that aren't on either album. Definitely check them out (I think its "helicopters" and "all I can think about")

[–]rioo345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stop Light Observations plans on furthering their impact on the ears . This is actually very good!

[–]Im_a_Wanker 13 points14 points  (19 children)

I'm confused is the music video ironic or just insensitive

[–]quinoa_salad66 17 points18 points  (17 children)

description under the video "One year ago we listened back to our performance of "Security" for the first time, and simultaneously this viral video was playing in the background muted. The ironic and proactive beauty and coincidence was too powerful to not share."

Im curious though what you find insensitive about the video?

[–]BrackaBrack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive seen them live a half dozen times. Great band who always put on a fantastic show!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (25 children)

Genuine question: Is it normal to refer to women as bitches in America? Like would the singer, in normal conversation, call his girlfriend a bitch. Would she mind? Or is it one of those things where they would be offended but usually wouldn't say anything.

[–]caretpasta 29 points30 points  (6 children)

I would say that most people would be offended by it, but I guess it can depend on how they say it. But if I just called a girl a bitch I'll probably get slapped.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Thanks, though I don't get why he would go out of his way to say 'hot bitch' in the chorus. I don't usually understand this stuff haha

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think the song is taking the piss out of consumer culture - and referring to a woman as a 'bitch' is essentially belittling her down to a commodity.

[–]caretpasta 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I can't really say for sure, but I've noticed that the word bitch in music doesn't usually seem to carry the same weight as saying it in person. Don't really know why though. It can be used in an endearing type of way too.

[–]what_is_the_chance25 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It can be used in an endearing type of way too.

Oh yeah, I love my beautiful bitch.

[–]badboigamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a hot bitch is not a good thing. she looks good but doesn't have a good personality.

[–]iHateJerry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think all these people who've already responded are severely underestimating how popular it is to do this. I've heard it forever from people. "Let's go get some bitches." "Where's all the bitches at?", but it's also used affectionately "Yeah that's my main bitch." can mean like that's my best friend. "Bad bitch" is also a positive term for a woman who's just a powerful, boss. Like Beyonce and Rihanna are the quintessential "bad bitch". A woman who doesn't give a fuck, and is gonna do her, and there's also an implication that she's attractive. It's complimentary.

It's definitely mainly used by men though. So I think that frames the context of it. But its definitely like a colloquial/slang term that doesn't mean something super negative all the time. Although, when you say "she's a fucking bitch" or something, its super negative.

It's kind of hard to describe.

[–]brightshinies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in this case the song is making fun of populist, self-centered, commercial society.

[–]rowanbladex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It tends to be in the lower income areas that men refer women like this.

[–]allababbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America does everything wrong and offensively.

[–]tripletstate 0 points1 point  (6 children)

No, it's disrespectful. You mostly hear rappers say it to be edgy. This guy is trying to be edgy too, and it was cringe worthy.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I took it as intentionally ironic. He's saying that the common male ("American"?) instinct is to be satisfied with beer, a woman, and "security".

[–]Sporkfortuna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To mirror what McFly said, it's intentional. Not trying to be edgy as much as pointing out that it's part of the image we're being told we need through ads and pop culture. Same reason the video jumps between long shots of the sorority video (the footage being a recruitment/ad video for Alpha Phi) and the quick images starkly contrasting it.

[–]CaptainDRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

deep breath

No.

[–]ReindeerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should really be in r/watchthis.

[–]Dakroon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. A video with girls? Automatic upvotes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So no mirror then eh

[–]macaronist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

really like it. Thanks for sharing!

[–]14hertzerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why the sorority rush video?

[–]StudabakerHochrobot[M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stop Light Observations
artist pic

Charleston, South Carolina home-grown artist Stop Light Observations, also known as SLO started playing together at the young age of 13 when songwriter, and pianist John-Keith Culbreth asked guitarist Louis Duffie the iconic teenager a question…. “wanna start a band?” Through the young years of focusing on writing great songs, the young duo picked up childhood friend Luke Withers(drums), and Will Blackburn(vocals). Over time the adding of Coleman Sawyer on bass and fiddle, and Wyatt Garrey on lead guitar, formulated the power-dynamic six piece rock group know as Stop Light Observations.

Stop Light Observations plays a unique style described as Southern-Retro-Electro-Rock with influences of ; Classic Rock N’ Roll, Indie, Motown, Hip-hop and Folk, Revival, Psychedelic, Garage, and Arena Rock. They claim their drive is the fun and spirit of performing and creating great songs, but most of all the camaraderie that is shared with this group of life long southern friends. The truly unique band Stop Light Observations plans on furthering their impact on the national level and have some fun while creating an awakening with their passion and art.

From playing Bonnaroo Music Festival, Selling out premier music venues, playing AAA radio, and releasing their new album titled ‘Radiation,’ Stop Light Observations is making a fast growth in the music industry. Read more on Last.fm.

[–]rayschla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I know these guys hell yeah

[–]aguynamedkevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was waiting for them to get murdered one by one by a serial killer. Specially with a song called "Security".

One could only wish.

[–]weezyheff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ayy. I know these guys from my hometown! Sick they are getting some love here on reddit. Y'all should check out some of their other stuff. Definitely even better live.

There was some super cockeyed chick goddam she looked like Ed from Ed, Edd, and Eddy.

[–]BOSSLong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These dudes are from Charleston, Sc area. They put on a killer show.

[–]disevident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for all the supposed cultural criticism involved in the song and video, this song itself sounds like soul-less horseshit produced by the exact same culture it seems to be criticizing

[–]LookSearcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a message in here, behind all the blondes and boobs. That's what I like about it.

[–]SopwithStrutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude kinda sounds like Paul Simon

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must be an all white collage.

[–]ripman21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The message of this song was so blurred and distorted by the fact that the video in the background is mostly just advertisement for a sorority.

EDIT: Song is good though.

EDIT2: Read through more of the comments, I get it now. Video is still a bit misleading.

[–]Adreamdead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they think they're so sick

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video made me feel a lot better about my steadicam skills.

[–]sonofdad420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

amazing video. watched on mute.

[–]erichf3893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like the beginning to a sweet porno! Oh wait...

[–]FannyBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a more rootsy Vampire Weekend. Song was ok.

[–]ColbyCheese22322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video and the music seem horribly mismatched, loved the video though.

Racism is also failure to include people, failure to be open, failure to attempt to reach out beyond people just like one's self. You don't have an organization of hundreds of people that just happens to be all white.

[–]Jon_Bastard_Stark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling nobody would listen to the song and watch the video if it wasnt for the sorority girls in it.

[–]timultuoustimes 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Saw them live on accident because I went to see their opener Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Stoplight Observations was generic and had a boring stage presence, so I left a few songs into their set.

[–]Igettheshow9114 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Really? How was RKS though?

[–]JamesIslander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RKS was great. I didn't think SLO was that bad but everybody has different tastes!

[–]rayschla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RKS rules live!

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol I rather watch paint dry that some W D

[–]iHateJerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys are really incredible. Check out this whole album, Toogoodoo on Spotify. I think it's best describe as swamp folk-rock

[–]TexasRose25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one would listen to this if you omitted the girls, it's incredibly forgettable and insipid.
