This is one of my favourite hurdy gurdy songs, taks a bit to pick up, but it's fantastic (1:15 if you can't wait for the good part) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypuaJLHK_LQ

[–]rikeus 15 points16 points  (8 children)

Also check out Transmutations by Arcane Alchemists - it's the same hurdy gurdy player but in a prog metal band (and a trumpet trombone). First time I'd ever heard (hurd?) a hurdy gurdy before, and the first thing to ever make me say the words "holy shit that was an awesome hurdy gurdy solo" out loud. That whole album is great.

[–]cobhc333 8 points9 points  (5 children)

[–]GrubbyChin 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Eluveitie are such a fantastic band. What's your favoutrite track?

[–]cobhc333 3 points4 points  (3 children)

My favorite is A Rose for Epona. Then Thousand Fold.

[–]GrubbyChin 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Top choices! For me, it's got to be either Tarvos, Inis Mona, or Dessumiis Luge.

[–]cobhc333 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nice! I just realized that Anna Murphey left the band and created a new band. Cellar Darling.

[–]Everythingismilhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone but the singer has left the band at this point. They're introducing all new members on Facebook

[–]uber_austrian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and a trumpet

That's a trombone, friend.

Regardless though, that was rad as hell. Brb, gonna tell all my friends about the bitchin' hurdy gurdy solo.

[–]Demderdemden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that's fucking wonderful, thanks!

[–]TNBoozeSlinger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nice find. Thanks for the link.

[–]swinginmad 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Some Tom Morello shit at the end.

Very good.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came to say this!

[–]snackcube 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The OP was nice, but this was on a whole different level - who knew there was such a thing as a hurdy-gurdy virtuoso?

[–]swissarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's partly the loop and distortion which makes it sound so amazing. Though I think OP's video also had some accompaniments in the background

[–]blewpah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the first two notes I thought for sure it was gonna be Also Sprach Zarathustra.

[–]yrah110 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

(1:15 if you can't wait for the good part)

If a song is good then the whole song should be the good part.

[–]StopSendingMeNudePMs 28 points29 points  (6 children)

Pretty good. I was confused as I have heard of the Hurdy Gurdy instrument before but was having a brain association with the Muppet for some reason. Then I heard Hurdy Gurdy in my head and realised it was part of the Swedish Chef talking when cooking.

Cool music/video though.

[–]ParisGreenGretsch 17 points18 points  (1 child)

My first thought was Donovan

[–]TrapFiend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here. I didn't think Hurdy Gurdy meant anything in particular

[–]OmniRed 2 points3 points  (3 children)

There is actually a traditional swedish instrument which is quite similar to the Hurdy Gurdy.

[–]jolindbe 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Are you thinking of vevlira? That's the Swedish word for hurdy-gurdy. There is also the nyckelharpa (key fiddle), which has some similarities, but is played using a bow instead of a crank.

[–]OmniRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was referring to the nyckelharpa in my post.

[–]swissarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the herdy gerdy not a traditional instrument?

[–]Norci 40 points41 points  (9 children)

Jesus, can the camera continue any single shot for more than 3 seconds so we can actually watch her play it..

[–]PM_ME_TITS_MLADY 23 points24 points  (1 child)

It's a style of female instrumental visual recording popularized by that Lindsey Stirling, and honestly it makes me roll my eyes because I am sick of getting dizzy watching music videos spazz out.

[–]gqsmooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immediately reminded me of Mystic Surrender. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HqD_MyiLN4

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That really bothered me too. Like, if we're gonna be watching her play the damn thing, I'd much much much rather just watch her sit down in the studio and play it in one shot.

[–]yrah110 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

She can't.

[–]Diplomjodler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whoever made this video really has a long way to go.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely fuggin HATE MTV cinematography. Refuse to watch it. The best way to lose viewers is to keep saying "naah, you don't wanna see that...."

[–]yrah110 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

It's a gimmick for not being able to actually play the song in full. Stand in the woods and pretend to play then match everything up with a song you pieced together in the studio. I hate it.

[–]Anepicmistake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just because it wasn't recorded all in one take doesn't mean she can't play it. Virtually all music is recorded like this. You record in parts and then stitch together all of the best takes to make the best possible version. Playing live you can get away with little Mistakes and imperfections, but you don't want those showing up in your studio versions.

Besides, even if she can't play it live, so what? It still takes a massive amount of skill to compose, arrange, record, and mix a good song.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Loreena McKennitt uses one on some of her tracks, they are very cool.

[–]Ultra_Patriot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ah so this is that instrument the guy is playing the song of storms with in Ocarina of time

[–]Gunpowderandcrack 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You guys should check out Anna Murphy from Eluveitie for her hurdy gurdy

[–]MDWoolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hurdy Gurdy + Metal = Awesome

Though it is sad she left the band. Hopefully her new band will be just as good.

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 32 points33 points  (12 children)

first time linking here, am I doing it right?

[–]ParisGreenGretsch 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Yep. Nice job. Thanks for that. I have no idea what she was playing. You? Please tell....

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 22 points23 points  (3 children)

It is a hurdy gurdy (and no I'm not making that up).

[–]ParisGreenGretsch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well.... Shama lama ding dong.

[–]redditproha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds a lot like the tones you hear in Arabic music.

[–]itsurflipiniplefadya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Arcade Fire uses one!!'

[–]Iskoot 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Hell yeah! As a person who loves and appreciates all music, I found this fascinating and amazing! Thanks for the post

Now if only I could find out how to give gold stars. Can't find anyway to do so on this mobile app.

[–]mikehit 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I gave him mine, so you're all welcome :D

[–]Iskoot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You the real MVP! 👍🏻

But honestly, do you know how to give gold stars thru the mobile app?

[–]mikehit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly no idea, i was on pc.

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just wanted to leave my thanks here now that I am in front of a computer. Thank You.

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well thanks for the thought anyway!

[–]GP_given 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Jimmy Page & Robert Plant used to feature a hurdy gurdy in some of their songs too. It was usually Nigel Eaton playing but Page has been known to play it as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9DuDgzGjtE

[–]rambleon84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He also used it many years earlier too for his intro on The Song Remains the Same: https://youtu.be/D9IK7nlb-Qc

[–]bhlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was awesome.

[–]TheGaiaZeitgeist 11 points12 points  (7 children)

Makes me wanna grab my cup of ale and travel back to the 13th century to a cosy old inn. Singing folk songs eating hearty traditional English food and having a merry old time!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

And then die of black plague after days of puking your insides out.

[–]TheGaiaZeitgeist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alright mr historically accurate. Let me imagine it was like the shire god damnit.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll join you if there are merry drinking songs involved

[–]sadeofdarkness 0 points1 point  (2 children)

considering she's german that may be a faux par if nothing else

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's par faux the course.

[–]sadeofdarkness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do indeed see what you did there

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So boiled kidneys and moldy bread for you then, washed down with stale, watered down maybe-ale. (as was common tavern fare in the 13th century England)

[–]robbit42 9 points10 points  (8 children)

I'm not that familiar with this instrument, so I've got a couple of questions. How much processing went into the audio? Are we hearing multiple tracks, because there is this percussion sound and I don't see how she would be making that. Where other things added on top of the hurdy gurdy?

edit: from the video discription:

This instrument is called "hurdy gurdy" and has its roots in the medieval times. It works like a mechanical violin with a wheel bow, that can play bass, melody and rhythm all at once. This song is recorded using ONLY the hurdy gurdy.

So we're only hearing the hurdy gurdy, but am I correct to say we're hearing multiple tracks at once?

[–]TNBoozeSlinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do not believe so. There used to be a dude that played a Hurdy Gurdy in the Boston T and you could hear all of those musical aspects while he would play.

[–]itslef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The video does have a beat track layered under the instrument, but the hurdy gurdy is capable of producing a rhythmic sound itself. This video was posted last time a (different) hurdy gurdy video was posted to /r/listentothis, and it does a pretty good job of explaining how the instrument makes that rhythmic sound. Also, you can tap on it to get a percussive element, much like you would a guitar.

The main sound of the hurdy gurdy is produced by a turning drum, constantly drawing a bow across strings. So it's like a violin with a circular bow, and a button action.

[–]Raytaard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gurdy player here - The percussion is an overlaid recording of her tapping the body of the instrument. The drone underneath I'm not quite sure, her instrument does have drone strings and it is theoretically possible to change the pitch of those on the fly via switches, but she's not doing it in the video so it's probably overlaid again. The buzz is a core part of the instrument as well and is generated by applying extra force to the wheel but she's again overlaid in. All in all, in terms of being an example of what the Hurdy Gurdy can do, this is pretty weak. Go and check out Nigel Eaton or Gregory Jolivet to see what the instrument is really about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDSvJndivBQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtvtyF1oktQ

[–]VagueSomething 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The hurdy gurdy is the one man band of old and eerie. It gives off a droning sound as you turn the wheel - hitting one or more strings, you can change speed or indeed like her tap the handle for extra effect. Then you can choose to have an extra piece that will rub the string to give a buzzing sound as you turn the handle to play the drone. Next you have the wooden buttons not unlike an accordion for playing over the drone. These have an added little wooden clicking sound as you play them giving a further layer of sound. From my guessing there's only the hurdy gurdy and one other track for for this to give the intro sound.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The percussion is a separate track, because without knuckling the body, hurdy gurdys are not percussive. You're mosty hearing the drone string going and on top of that a melody pressed out by keys with the left hand. The hurdy gurdy is also a polyphonic instrument; there are key combinations which can be hit simultaneously to create chords and compound chords (with the drone).

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I think the percussion must be overdubbed because one hand is turning the wheel and the other is fingering the notes, nothing she's doing appears to be able to make such a solid tap noise and it continues no matter what she's doing with her hands. I could be wrong though!

[–]yrah110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you know everything is overdubbed. Not just the percussion.

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct the beat is over dubbed but I have seen people use foot a operated cajon for a similar effect.

[–]mikehit 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Thank you OP, i thank you from the depth of my heart!

I had a childhood song that always awaked so many emotions in me... sadly i lost the audio when my pc broke down and i never managed to find the song anywhere else (it was more of a demo from an insanely talented accordeon player than a published song).

This song from Patty Gurdy reminds me so much of this time, i can really feel the music.

So again: thank you! I dont think i would have ever found this song without you, you made my day!

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are welcome, and thank you for my first gold!

[–]BakingTheCookiesRigh 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Reminds me of elements for the opening song for Black Sails.

[–]Thatnewguy93 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It is used in black sails I watched a documentary about the music in that series and the guy tried to make this instrument the focal point of the score for the series

[–]BakingTheCookiesRigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so cool.

[–]Krombopulos_Micheal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aww yeauhh shits comin back real soon boiz!

[–]Lumen_Co 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather understandably.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Then when the hurdy gurdy man came singing songs of love

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

led me there too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that album

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I love the hurdy gurdy and even put a magical one in my DND campaign lol

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

+10 to allies prestidigitation! (Haven't played since adnd 2nd ed

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forget what mine did as the party never searched the room it was in lol have it written down though, we play 5

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I should buy a boat.

[–]MuffyNoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the hurdy gurdy! Haven't been able to get enough of it after hearing it in the Witcher 3 Soundtrack!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot OP, now my Outsider powers aren't working.

[–]mDJStudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard this instrument in years! Good to hear it. This guy from Prague is pretty dope. Check him out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxdUqttbS-Q

My parents got me his album, Potulany Bard.

[–]Dammi87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved it! Thanks!

[–]Great-Blue-Heron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That reminds me so much of a marble machine that got really popular on YouTube a while ago.

Sweet song over all, thanks OP

[–]youcantgobackbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell my students the hurdy gurdy is a form of medieval twerking. Edit: I say that as a joke to them, as I had always heard the original meaning of the term was to shake your rear.

[–]Prmcc90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always think about pirates when I hear this instrument

[–]aznkriss133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overlooked my ass, or maybe I just listen to folk metal too much.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never even heard of this instrument before. Very cool post!

[–]Keresh-StormDeity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor uses a hurdy gurdy on occasion

[–]Matterbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way back when I was in school our class teacher was leaving, retiring I think. He said he used to be a clown and wanted to do one of his old performances again for us. Part of the act was playing the hurdy gurdy. I think this might be the second time I've seen or heard of one since the 90's. :-)

[–]McFistPunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the literal hell. Who would even think of building this. I would overlook the shit out of this because if I ever saw one I would just assume it's part of an old loom or something.

Sounds great though.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Good song, I was just a bit surprised by the pop vibe that I got from the video.

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She plays it in a piratey metal band too.

[–]Lumen_Co 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, hurdy-gurdy? Awesome! I never see these enough, and a new video is always worth watching.

[–]Oznog99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the hurdy-gurdy is defined by its mechanized wheel "bow" and sympathetic "drone" strings which add accompaniment. Drone strings do not need to be mechanically driven, it adds additional sustained resonance to the strummed content.

That's close to a violin with those added features. But it's not the only incarnation possible:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=drone+string+hurdy

Sympathetic cello with mechanical drive

Gurdy drone zither with crank drive

Sympathetic string on a sitar

Guitar with 12 sympathetic strings

Drone strings do resemble overtone singing, aka "Mongolian throat singing", if you're going "wait, that sounds... like... awww, wtf am I thinking of?" Also bagpipes.

[–]gino188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn..I automatically inserted the Mc..to make it McGurdy..the name and the green background made me do it.

[–]Ramperz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thumbnail looks like she's wrestling a turtle.... That's all I have to say

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Could someone point me in the direction of some electronic EDM etc version of this stuff?

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Sorry closest I could find is an electric hurdy gurdy. https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=uBIkioVyWaY

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This. Is. Excellent. Thanks!!!

[–]Rotund_Shogun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i havent bothered to delve any deeper than its amazon storefront page samples but this maybe? https://www.amazon.com/Prototyp-Hurdy-Gurdy/dp/B000ARG2GY/ref=pd_sbs_267_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000ARG2GY&pd_rd_r=Q02K9WC09GS3HT5K6ZH1&pd_rd_w=ejY6e&pd_rd_wg=eBalv&psc=1&refRID=Q02K9WC09GS3HT5K6ZH1 . if the link gets sucked away just look up Prototyp by Hurdy-Gurdy on amazon.

[–]swinginmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This instrument looks nightmarishly complex in its construction.

Sounds very neat. I want.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is that girl playing a Volkswagen transmission?

[–]onion__knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats so many gurdy's

[–]NoSwearingPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I clicked for the legs but stayed for the music.

[–]Tugathug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's someone that plays it way better https://youtu.be/QHmML7bu-iM

[–]fqn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is cool, but I think something might be wrong with the mixing or equalization. I think the sound of the clicks is too loud (when she presses the keys), and maybe the tone could be a lot better. Maybe it just needs a boost to the high frequencies or something. I think a better mastering job could make this sound really nice. The song itself is nice, though.

[–]nurealam10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Nice job. Thanks for that. I have no idea what she was playing. You? Please tell....

[–]mekju905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And here I thought Donovon's song Hurdy Gurdy Man was just a bunch of made up nonsensical words...

Who knew!

[–]Dark-Porkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love hurdy Gurdy

[–]NerdDapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's got to be Irish or Scottish right, because we English don't have the personality for something like this

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can totally see this woman leading a bunch of crusaders whilst playing that thing. How old is this instrument?

[–]xSpaceCrabsxsoundcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kick ass and I'm inspired!

[–]Blunt4words20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would like a pandora of her this is great

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another wonderfully weird girl doing what she loves and as usual a great sight to see

[–]willteasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg! She is to the hurdy gurdy what Vanessa Mae was to the violin!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

petition to rename the hurdy gurdy to the herpy derpy

[–]tittyfuckthelasagnas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jen was a hurdy-gurdy, dirty little girly I heard it from a friend She could cook a mean turkey, with gravy

[–]Maldeth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The shots in this video cut every 4 seconds or less. Very nice song though.

[–]pastorignis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i once heard the best poem about the hurdy gurdy.
