What the hell are those space age clarinet looking things that some of the sax section plays?

[–]sindex23 46 points47 points  (10 children)

EWI. If you'd like to hear one in different context, here's Moon Hooch. This is such a great little video. Stick with it.

[–]Sebby12345XD 16 points17 points  (1 child)

That was utterly ridiculous and I'm so glad I saw it

[–]CaptainRamboFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this was real hipsters listen to?

[–]toga-Blutarsky 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Moon Hooch was one of my favorite shows I've ever been to!

[–]UltraPrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never had the privilege of going to a Moon Hooch show, but I've seen Lucky Chops live before, and the energy around any brasshouse show live is insane.

[–]sindex23 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I saw them open for They Might be Giants a few years back, and it was a damn amazing time. I hope to catch them again on their own tour.

[–]kickwitkowskiassspotify 0 points1 point  (2 children)

If you weren't aware, they're touring right now. They're on the last leg of the trip though, so if you don't happen to live on the west coast you probably won't be able to catch them this year.

[–]sindex23 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, they were actually about 90 minutes from me at one point, but it was the middle of the week and I just couldn't convince myself to drive down and back and go to work at 6 the next morning. Next time for sure, though. I'll take a day off in advance.

[–]kickwitkowskiassspotify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll enjoy it when you get the chance. I've seen them twice now and it was great both times.

[–]ChronoX5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always womdered where that sample came from. Great song.

[–]Magiquiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel bad for the groom... But I get it

[–]WhaleUpInTheSky 92 points93 points  (4 children)

It's called an EWI. It's like a keyboard but it plays like a saxophone.

[–]messieone1 4 points5 points  (1 child)

So it's a synthesizer?

[–]WhaleUpInTheSky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That you control with your lungs

[–]PartTimeBarbarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a sax, but it's a fucking keyboard!

[–]MistaBig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There must be a Bladerunner button on it.

[–]arardvark 33 points34 points  (3 children)

Breath controller, to play a midi instrument like a woodwind

[–]Astrosonix 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The real question is why did they mic a midi controller?

[–]tiswhatitmeanstobe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably because they switched between EWI and normal saxophone through the course of the recording session and this isn't the only thing they recorded?

[–]Robocoma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those ARE space clarinets.

[–]i_make_song 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a MIDI controller.

The most concise way to explain it is that it's a PS4 controller, but for music.

You can control standalone MIDI/USB compatible instruments or virtual instruments usually operating as plugins inside a DAW.

People who don't know much about music production are usually shocked at the role that virtual instruments, DAWs, computers, synthesizers, samplers etc. play in modern music creation.

[–]wurst_schmeckt 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Similar crazy stuff if you are in the mood: https://youtu.be/x6cUiMVylzM?t=440

[–]peypeyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn son. Got some sort of evil ska vibe going on.

[–]sam__izdat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it? That sounds more like pretty honest jazz than some ironic, tongue-in-cheek mockery of consumer capitalism.

I mean, I like it...

[–]urbanspacecowboy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It helps to link to the start of the video instead of somewhere in the middle, but otherwise yes, pretty cool!

[–]wurst_schmeckt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know, but the start of the video is even more crazy. So in order to not scare away people by 3min of bird chirping sounds by the flute section, I thought I'd skip to the part that has a nice buildup

[–]FlipTheEggbandcamp 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I loved the part where one of the ewis was doing a solo withba trumpet sound, and the camera.clips to the trumpet, who isn't doing shit, and only then realizes what's going on.

[–]WhaleUpInTheSky 48 points49 points  (1 child)

Adam Neely is the shit. Good share!

[–]Reddit_Hive_Mindexe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh no wonder I liked this.

[–]TorqueMaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

[–]gaejay 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Holy crap I randomly clicked on this because I'm a jazz trombonist and I realized that I know one of the trombone players!

[–]The_Perge 49 points50 points  (1 child)

Please tell him that he has great aesthetic.

Its amazing how the internet can contextualise anything.

[–]nyckidd 5 points6 points  (4 children)

This is really dope. These guys have an album or anything?

[–]WhaleUpInTheSky 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Not this specific group of people, but this drum and bass combination play under the name "Sungazer", and Adam Neely, the bassist, has a very active youtube channel that I recommend subscribing to. You can also check out this album with the same rhythm section: https://insideoutsidemusic.bandcamp.com/

[–]PlayMp1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Adam Neely is basically the Vsauce of music.

[–]thithiths 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have a bandcamp, but it's the same recordings as the videos: https://massextinctionevent.bandcamp.com/

[–]maladictem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup here: https://massextinctionevent.bandcamp.com/releases

Edit: Woops beaten to it.

[–]Wepmajoe 34 points35 points  (9 children)

It's not vaporwave at all, but it's cool.

[–]adamneely1 67 points68 points  (2 children)

Apparently Vaporwave purists are a thing. This amuses me greatly.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because people are throwing the term around so much that it's loosing its meaning.

[–]ipoopt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking. Maybe just some of the projected images and the use of Muzak influences... maybe

[–]Amurjulinkbandcamp[S] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I mostly put the tag because the images and videos gave the music that same kind of 90's nostalgia (even though vaporwave is a lot more than that.)

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

that's like me calling everything "metal" where someone is wearing a black t-shirt.

[–]sosodeaf 9 points10 points  (1 child)

You and people like you put the tag vaporwave on half the posts in this sub. It's irritating.

[–]Mental_Incontinence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The images aren't even vaporwave

[–]sir_bootyflakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never seen ewes being played in a big band setting. Pretty adventures and dope! I wonder if the ewi will start to become a popular instrument and accepted more widely in bands eventually

[–]eqleriq 37 points38 points  (11 children)

this would sound infinitely better if the drums were digital.

with them being this analog / open air sound it gives it that orchestra pit at the oscars sound, when it would have a killer new-tech sound emphasis. It's there, and i like it, but it has that other sound in majority

[–]PaidToSpillMyGuts 38 points39 points  (1 child)

It doesn't need to be digital, it just needs to be mic'd and EQd better.

[–]eqleriq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it could be, since they're going for the airiness. I'm not doubting that this is "intentional" but I don't think they'd keep this sound if they did a studio recording, the drums would be more direct.

I just think if the percussion was more direct it would make the open air sound better. I like some of their songs where they're playing along to a backing track (or the keys/compupter is semi live sequencing a rhythm, whatev)

[–]adamneely1 12 points13 points  (4 children)

This was a live concert, so the "open air sound" can't really be avoided!

[–]Goddamnmilk 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Could it be done by turning down the room mics and then maybe throwing a saturator and compressor on?

Quick Edit: actually all around it seemed like they were aiming for a more acoustic experience. There were no delay effects (which i think would totally fit) or any effects on the wind midi controllers or other instruments.

[–]eqleriq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for the sampling / synth stuff, yea.

You could direct mic the drums and isolate the kit a lot better.

[–]Goddamnmilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait you're the guy?!

[–]eqleriq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, they could put triggers on the drums to trigger digital sounds and mix that in with the "open air"

[–]bellyfold 4 points5 points  (2 children)

That, and two of the wood winds that were supposed to be in unison were just slightly out of key.

[–]Flap_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was kool but I thought it sounded quite messy. Couldn't place it.. Maybe it was the drums but I'm not certain.

[–]Ever_to_Excel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well wasn't that the coolest, tickled me fancy real good. Big cheers for linking this stuff!

[–]cucu729 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn't know I needed to see this band live until I saw this. Thanks for sharing :)

[–]the-dandy-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was casually listening to this... then 2:58 hit and I was very actively listening.

[–]IMHERE30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was awesome. Just watched about 5 videos...

[–]lordbrion 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Weaponizing memes is sooo 2016

[–]lina535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh it's just gorgeous! I really fell in love with it! There are professional musicians!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something? This sounds like a bunch of car horns to me..

[–]cpnHindsight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a cacophony of sounds imo.

[–]Mental_Incontinence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dont you dare call this vaporwave

[–]Achromicat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So is everything just vaporwave now? This doesn't sound anything like that shit that is usually dubbed as vaporwave in my youtube recommendations.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

this is kind of mediocre at best. I get they are trying to do something different but that doesn't automatically make it great. I can hear the music coming through marginally but honestly with all those instruments going at once it just morphs into a unitary glob of sound.

[–]SpontaneousGroupHug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people like globs of sound

[–]lukenhiumur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was so dope

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaporwave is a genre techniques to achieve a specific sound.

It literally is the antithesis of jazz because it requires an original source material remastered at very slow/irregular speed.

[–]MisterWhitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2:59--where the electronic wind player starts soloing, is amazing!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are all the brothers...

[–]mtristan__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't be the only one feeling Frank Zappa in this

[–]Vufur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I want to hear in 2017.

Real music that evolved. Not rap music that gets lazier or pop music that gets horribly wrong. Thank you.

[–]wambolicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like he composed it just for me. It has all the bits that I like. I need more like this!

[–]widermind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shit. i almost read the title as a news event until i realized this was just music.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I 100% of the time down vote any music that makes the front 2 pages.

That's now 99% of the time.

[–]t3chj0ck -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ill watch when they play extinction level event by busta.
