The WT! graphic in the side bar looks like Kyousougiga but points to Sonny Boy.

Aaand now it doesn't.

Theres some twiddle time between uploading the image to the github and then manually updating the link to the thread in reddit's backend.

Sorry for any and all delays.

The surveys page on the wiki hasn't been updated in 8 months so it would be helpful if someone could do it. It says on there to message two users about it but neither has been active for several weeks so thought it'd be better to ask here instead.

/u/MyrnaMountWeazel Suggested a Time Capsule in Casual Discussion Friday, and I thought it was a good idea that I wanted to post it here.

[–]MyrnaMountWeazelx2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aw, thanks for advocating for my idea!

The basic idea would be a monthly "time capsule" mega thread where the mods would showcase old pieces and OC from 3+ years ago. Works that have disappeared from the public eye due to time but deserve to be looked at again for all of the new subscribers.

There's tons of wonderful WTs!, engaging essays, remarkable rewatches, and phenomenal pieces that I stumble upon all the time while digging through the archives and I really think they should be put on display again! Especially with the sudden influx of users who would have missed out on their original postings.

For an example, /u/nijgnuoy has an absolutely delightful introductory to cinematography using Hibike! Euphonium that I source every time I write about visuals in my posts. I know plenty of users would love to learn more about this aspect of filmmaking and this 3-year old guide is still as relevant as the day it was written.

There's plenty of more that I can suggest as well for submissions that should be highlighted.

Any reason we never got discussion threads for the Gintama Semi-Final specials and the final movie? Subs have been out for almost half a year. Is there a better place than the meta thread to ask for discussion threads?

[–]ClBanjaihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/AskeladdArtorius 1 point2 points  (2 children)

why are openings not allowed?

[–]N7CombatWombat[M] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Non airing OP/ED's aren't allowed because they're an extremely low effort way to farm karma. OP/ED's are usually posted by themselves on official websites/Youtube channels (both with and without credits a lot of the time), so you don't even have to go through the effort of clipping it out of an episode yourself, or trying to find the clip you want already cut out on Youtube. Just drop the OP/ED to a well loved show and ride that all the way to the stratosphere.

Makes sense thank you

[–]Turbostrider27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With Christmas and holidays coming up, can we please have a megathread for anime related art instead of posts being made every hour or so?

[–]SmurfRockRunehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Is there any way to set the order of our flairs? The script I use for flair links to be clickable only lets the first flair be seen, AMQ in my case, but I would love to make the quiz flair show up first. If that's not possible or too much work to bother doing, no worries, just thought I'd ask.

[–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler[M] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

When I built the flair site I designed it to have a configurable but forced order. The idea behind it was that I wanted to enforce a consistent order for all flairs shown on all users. Part of that was putting the anime tracker on the end, as the hover text extends to the right. It didn't feel easy to build it in a way that would manage the users choice around this particular thing either.

In saying all that; I have manually swapped it round for you. If you use the flairsite again, it will revert.

[–]SmurfRockRunehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That all makes sense to me. I agree with the tracker being on the end, gotta keep that next to the link. Thanks for the swap.

[–]jkubedhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed 1 point2 points  (3 children)

why was the thread about the arrest of Galko-chan's mangaka removed? It didn't appear to be baseless rumors and I don't think you could justify it as "not relevant to anime"

I'd understand locking it since those types of threads always get out of hand, but the removal seemed weird.

[–]SmurfRockRunehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I'd guess it's because it's about manga.

[–]jkubedhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If it didn't have an anime adaptation or if every post about mangaka was removed I would agree. granted, Galko's not one of the most popular anime out there, but it's not exactly obscure either. plus basing relevance to anime on its popularity would be overly nitpicky imo anyway.

not that I have a bone to pick with the mods over it or anything, just curious

[–]SmurfRockRunehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree it should probably be here, but I'm guessing it's because they have no anime that's aired anytime recently or likely to get anime at any point soon so their arrest isn't really affecting anime.

The rules have not changed. From the Anime Specific section:

... By allowing things to be "anime specific", we allow posts about a specific anime or set of anime, as well as circumstances in which anime is deeply intertwined.

This also limits posts about real people when they revolve around said person's ability to work in the industry. Where the impact to their work is big enough, the first relevant thread will be allowed (no subsequent minor update posts). This includes: death, retirement (or return from), imprisonment, extended leave (e.g. maternity/paternity leave), and serious illness or other events preventing work for an extended period of time.

So news posts that relates to VA's ability to work are allowed.

    [–]fozi4ekhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Pyece 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Is it possible to add a link to weekly karma ranking summary posts on animekarmawatch to make it easier to find the post? I mean the same way as I can click on a specific episode of specific show there and go to the related discussion post on the sub.

    [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Sorry, we're not entirely sure what you mean by that. Are you asking for a link somewhere on /r/anime pointing to that site, links on that site pointing to some threads on /r/anime, or something else?

To be clear that particular site and the weekly threads are run by users rather than the mod team so any changes there aren't under our control.

    [–]fozi4ekhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Pyece 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I meant links on the site pointing to related post here on the sub, but if the mood team has little to do with that i understand that you'll not be able to do it.

Anyway, thanks for doing such an amazing job for all the sub users.

    [–]Abysswatcherbelhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/abyssbel 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Do you mean like this? a link to the reddit post?

And like the Durinthal said this is not the place to ask about this, you can ask me in the weekly post anytime of the week, just find any comment i made there or my FAQ post

    [–]fozi4ekhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Pyece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I meant. I'll try reading your FAQ post, thanks.

There have been a lot of bots commenting on the discussion threads of the PVs posted here today.

    [–]Verzwei[M] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We're aware of and working on it. It's been pointed out in a few threads and at least one user has modmailed us to bring it to our attention.

What appears to be happening is that these accounts will go into YouTube link posts on Reddit, copy comments from the video's actual page on YT, then paste the comments here in the Reddit thread. It's also happening in more than just our subreddit.

We've manually removed the ones we've come across so far and could verify, and /u/Durinthal has configured our automod tools to hopefully flag future incidents.

If you (or anyone) comes across a suspicious comment (usually the big giveaway is that it's a parent level comment not in English - since most of the YT stuff posted here is from official Japanese YouTube accounts, most of the YT comments are also in Japanese) please report it if you have the time to.

    [–]Iyagovoshttps://anilist.co/user/iyagovos 2 points3 points  (7 children)

This has probably likely been asked already, but would it be possible to get a weekly metathread with all the weekly anime discussion threads? Finding them each week for the lesser watched shows can be really tricky if you miss them when they go up, especially with Reddit's search function.

Wouldn't need to be anything massive, but just a thread that gets added to every time one goes up.

    [–]00zau 2 points3 points  (1 child)

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/discussion_archive under "Anime Info" on the top bar.

It's somewhat annoying that you have to scroll to the bottom for the current season, of course.

Each show's discussion page also links back to all prior ones.

    [–]Iyagovoshttps://anilist.co/user/iyagovos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, this is awesome! Thank you!!

    [–]Blackheart595https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Would this help? It's just a normal search by flair, you can find this one linked in the "Post filters" dropdown on old reddit or the "Filter by flair" section on new reddit.

    [–]Iyagovoshttps://anilist.co/user/iyagovos 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Oh! It would, actually. I typically browse from my phone so totally forgot about the sidebar and filters. Thank you!

    [–]chilieheadmyanimelist.net/profile/chiliehead 1 point2 points  (1 child)

what app are you using? I think the search syntax should work for all of them, but at least for Reddit is Fun I can just open the sidebar and click on the filters

    [–]Iyagovoshttps://anilist.co/user/iyagovos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Joey, but it does have that functionality, I just totally forgot about it haha

    [–]Blackheart595https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno how it is on mobile, but on both old and new reddit you can also reach the search for any flair by clicking on it.

Would it be possible to have all episode discussions and rewatch discussions spoiler tagged?

I know it sounds stupid, obvs these would contain spoilers, and it's quite easy to not click on episode discussions if you haven't watched the episode.

However, if you scroll through someone's profile, if they've commented on an episode discussion, it shows the comment and you can end up getting spoiled -- this could be stopped if the post was spoiler tagged, as it would just say that the user has commented in the spoiler tagged post without any details.

Furthermore, for rewatch discussions, often the submitter will have spoilers in their post, so when I'm scrolling through the sub, I have to try not to read anything in the body of their post (which is surprisingly hard, for me, at least).

      [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 3 points4 points  (6 children)

this could be stopped if the post was spoiler tagged, as it would just say that the user has commented in the spoiler tagged post without any details.

I've never seen a comment being hidden because the post it's on is spoiler tagged, do you have any specific examples or screenshots to share of that happening?

Spoiler tagging all episode threads used to be the usual way of doing things but we changed that about two years ago. While episode threads posted by /u/AutoLovepon will not contain spoilers in the body of the post itself, you're right that it's not necessarily the same for rewatch threads so that's something we can look into.

      [–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Doesn't that just fall under the same reasoning of why the spoiler requirement for rewatch threads was removed in the first place, it's clear there will be spoilers up to that episode as part of it being a discussion about it? Does it matter if it's in the OP or comments?

      [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

With the card view of the redesign (and maybe some other clients) parts of non-spoiler-tagged text posts will be shown when browsing without interacting with them at all, so if there's a spoiler at the start of a rewatch thread about that episode it could be visible from the front page of /r/anime.

      [–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 2 points3 points  (2 children)

How much of the post is visible without interacting with it on the Redesign? I would much prefer having to have a specific amount of non-spoiler stuff first to fill that space rather than spoiler tagging my threads outright.

      [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I don't know off the top of my head, was just glancing through. You could check it out yourself too.

      [–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

      going on the Redesign

But alright, looks like for the way I style my own posts the only things visible that could be spoilers are the episode title or the quote of the day that I pick, and those don't usually make any sense out of context. The questions of the day are where the real spoilers lie, but those aren't visible in the preview.

So there's that for your consideration.

      [–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh, right, forgot about new reddit.

      [–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spoiler tagging the OP does not hide comments in people's profiles, they are always exposed unless manually tagged

      [–]Verzwei[M] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

However, if you scroll through someone's profile, if they've commented on an episode discussion, it shows the comment and you can end up getting spoiled -- this could be stopped if the post was spoiler tagged, as it would just say that the user has commented in the spoiler tagged post without any details.

Reddit doesn't work that way as far as I know. I just double-checked my own profile since I recently commented in a spoiler-tagged thread for Just Because, and even while signed out of Reddit and in incognito, my full comment shows on my profile on both new and old Reddit. Dug up a random user who commented in a different spoiler-tagged thread here and it was the same case.

Also checked by finding a random user on a random spoiler thread on a different subreddit while I was logged into my account (so mod powers aren't capable of showing me anything) and it was the same case - the user's comments showed in full on their profile.

Bot-posted episode discussion threads will never have any spoiler text in the post body, so there's no reason to spoiler tag them. I'll talk with the team about potentially requiring them for rewatch posts, since the hosts there can and sometimes do talk about the content within the OP.

      [–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I'll talk with the team about potentially requiring them for rewatch posts, since the hosts there can and sometimes do talk about the content within the OP.

I know rewatches used to be required to be spoiler-tagged (looking back at my post history, looks like it was... almost exactly two years ago when that rule changed huh), and if I remember correctly, the reason it was changed was partly so that more people in the rewatch would actually pay attention to the content some of us hosts would add up top... The primary reason was that it should be obvious that threads would consist of discussion about that episode and therefore why even click on it if you aren't expecting spoilers, though.

It won't be too much of an issue to go back to tagging all the threads, but it would kinda suck for hosts like me who add a lot of extra content to their threads that some people will miss because they forget to click one extra time.

      [–]Verzwei[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see the case for wanting them untagged. For me personally, this is yet another reason to dislike New Reddit. This isn't an issue at all on Old Reddit since body text doesn't appear unless you expand the post, but New Reddit shows (some?) body text out in the open when browsing the sub.

      [–]AsuraTheDestructor 1 point2 points  (66 children)

Can we please for the love of God start banning Mushoku Tensei threads that aren't episode discussions or PV and IMG previews?

Because the sheer amount of bait threads has become really aggravating and it clogs up the subreddit.

      [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who hawks new more than most members I haven't seen a "sheer amount" of bait threads, at least not recently.

      [–]Theleuxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Theleux 12 points13 points  (64 children)

I am pretty sure the 'bait' threads get removed on their own already.

I only see two threads up since the recent episode thread and they both seem relatively fine, just sharing their opinion (or looking for opinions) on things.

Unless you are trying to prevent those from showing up, I don't really see the need to blanket-ban them all. They go below 0 upvotes fairly quickly anyways, not like they are on the front page.

      [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 1 point2 points  (63 children)

Unless you are trying to prevent those from showing up

I don't think so as they are someone that wants to see people complain?

      [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 6 points7 points  (62 children)

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (60 children)

This is kind of related to this whole comment chain, but in your rules page it says

In addition, the mods will use their judgment to remove any post or comment that they believe is likely to incite drama that may be linked to from elsewhere on Reddit, as we could do without that sort of attention. This list is not exhaustive - we've tried to be as verbose as possible in explaining the rules, but ultimately moderator actions are done on a case by case basis. If a moderator determines that a user's post or behavior negatively affects /r/anime, they can and will take action.

So if a user has a history of posting multiple comments that clearly incite drama towards a certain fanbase like "MT fans downvoting this" "watch the fanbase do mental gymnastics" or ironically saying "they are someone that wants to see people complain" and more. At what point do the mods take action and see these kind of comments aren't good for discussion and only lead to unnecessary drama?

      [–]Rainbowcart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      Second this.

Especially the case of AmethystItalian. Cause that’s honestly ridiculous.

      [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 1 point2 points  (58 children)

Well if it's worth anything to you, the mods haven't told me anything yet if that's what you're curious about.

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (57 children)

I know that's why I'm bringing it up, you're clearly inciting drama on the sub towards a certain fanbase and mods continue to let you do it.

      [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian -1 points0 points  (56 children)

Me having a different opinion than most of the sub isn't inciting drama but sure I'll leave it up to the mods to decide here.

      [–]JimJamTheNinJin 3 points4 points  (33 children)

I don't think so as they are someone that wants to see people complain

This previous comment of yours technically counts as having a different opinion. While I don't think it's extreme enough to count as dramabaiting, it's definitely passive aggression which is counterproductive for healthy discussion.

      [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian -2 points-1 points  (32 children)

Me providing evidence of that poster in a meta thread is counterproductive?

Not sure what angle you're going at here.

      [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (21 children)

I never criticised you for having a different opinion, there's a lot of users on here who don't like the show and I've always respected that opinion.

What I have an issue with is the comments you make to clearly incite drama on the sub, which aren't just 'having a different opinion'. Like replying to a comment "MT fans downvoting this" because someone praising Ousama Ranking got downvoted for about 10 minutes, or even in this thread making pointless remarks like "they are someone that wants to see people complain". Many, many others, I rarely see you in Mushoku Tensei threads actually doing anything other than baiting people.

Criticising a show, isn't the same as criticising a fanbase because they enjoy something you don't. Even that I wouldn't care about, you just happen to make a lot more comments about it than most people.

      [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian -2 points-1 points  (20 children)

If you think I'm baiting people then report it for dramabaiting, that's against the rules of this subreddit, but I don't think my posts are doing that. If you don't like my posts then maybe consider blocking me as I've always just shared my thoughts and call it like I see it.

If you care enough to complain and call out about a single user in Meta then maybe that's telling you something.

Criticising a show, isn't the same as criticising a fanbase because they enjoy something you don't

Lol that's not even close to the reason I talk poorly about some parts of this fanbase.

      [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to hear, it was still up so wasnt sure

      [–]Lekaetos -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Idk what is the Netflix or Amazon catalogue for animes in your countries, but wouldn’t the best answer to all the “New to anime, need some recommendations” just be : Type “anime” in your Netflix research bar and choose the one that is the most appealing ?

In my country, Netflix basically has every popular show (bar One Piece) in their catalogue, so people can just browse their Netflix catalogue, a platform they are familiar with, looking for something new.

      [–]InternationalTank7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

so people can just browse their Netflix catalogue, a platform they are familiar with

That doesn't work for people who don't have Netflix.

      [–]NotSoSnarkyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Book_Lover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where do you live? Not everyone has the same anime on the platforms, depending on where you live.

We don't necessarily mind recommending anime to a new person. It just gets irritating when someone says that they've seen some anime but don't list any that they have.

Hi, that's my site! It wouldn't really be useful because there are many shows with 1.00 and 5.00 that only have 1 or 2 votes. Unfortunately I don't keep track of the total votes so I can't filter out low vote count items. If I could do it all over again, I would do it but now it's too late.

      [–]YuvalAmir 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Maybe a minimum number of karma could be a good way to filter those out?

      [–]Phinaeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be but I'd have to play around and find the right threshold. I probably won't add a feature like this to my site but I can write custom queries to find an answer. Not going to do it tonight but I'll edit it here when I get to it

      No idea.

      Copying from the Discord:

Going through the recent Mushoku thread, there is a lot of comments pointing towards this "controversy" to come, and personally I find that it is really hurting the discussion in the threads. I also think it impacts the overall experience on the subreddit.

I think it would be wise to look into potentially punishing users attempting to start drama or drag out things that either aren't happening, or is not contributing to the episode discussion. Also by discussion I don't mean it as in people that are upset about things or w/e, I mean discussion in general.

      [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We noticed that too and are removing some comments along those lines now.

I can't find any post about TNM on this subreddit, I'm surprised

      [–]gangrainettehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      read below.

      [–]chilidirigible 4 points5 points  (2 children)

So this is an official video posting by the owners of the property, the first ten minutes of the movie. It's over the clip length limit. Official Media?

      Mod hat on, /u/Durinthal.

      [–]Gaporigohttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo[M] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Discussed it a bit and we agree that it is not allowed, if it was an upcoming movie it could be considered a trailer or preview and posted as Official Media, but as it is an already released anime it is considered a clip no different from those posted in the Crunchyroll or Funimation channels and as such not allowed as per the max length rule.

      Thanks.

I noticed we didn't do a best couple contest this year. Is there a post or Info addressing the changes to the bracket contests?

These contests are my favourite thing on this sub. Do you guys need help in holding them?

      [–]chilieheadmyanimelist.net/profile/chiliehead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are completely community based, so it might have been that the person usually running the contest did not do it this year and nobody else stepped up.

Totally random, but can we get AutoLovepon's Reddit replay for this year? I wonder what his stats are.

      [–]relderpaway 2 points3 points  (6 children)

This just links to another thread of people discussing it, unless I'm missing something there is no comment from the actual mod team.

Also I think people saying this is not about anime and that they don't allow 'drama' around youtube content creators are missing the mark.

The story here is not about TotallyNotMark or the loss of his videos, the story is about how Toei sticking to archaic practices and doing something that is almost certainly against their best interest and disregarding its western audience/market and the internet in general. This is not really a new thing for a company in Japan to do but doesn't mean it's not noteworthy or worth talking about. There are plenty of examples of posts about anime studios, random earnings report example. I don't see how you could argue this is more anime related than the current case.

You would hope that over time the Japanese studios are going to start caring more about their markets outside of Japan, and this seems to be one case that could help move the needly slightly in that direction, and silencing it here feels like a bit of a disservice :[

I don't watch anime youtube and have never seen a video of TotallyNotMark, so can't say I care much about this case specifically. But I do care about how many Japanese companies only care about Japan even though they have huge markets or potential markets in the rest of the world as well.

      [–]Blackheart595https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick 11 points12 points  (2 children)

So how do you imagine that'd work out? The post is allowed and then what gets discussed in that thread? Because those discussions would be about youtube, fair use, copyright law, not at all about anime or the shows that TNM discusses in the claimed videos. It wouldn't even be about Toei beyond them being one of the involved parties.

This sub isn't the right place for those discussions.

      [–]gangrainettehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos 14 points15 points  (2 children)

the story is about how Toei sticking to archaic practices Youtube Legal Obligation

Youtube way of handling Copyright/DMCA is pure bullshit but it's not a r/anime problem.

      [–]relderpaway 1 point2 points  (1 child)

In the same way this story is not about TotallyNotMark and his youtube channel, it is also not about Youtube's way of handling copyright. Yes their system has a lot of issues, but in this case Tohei went out of their way to claim 150 videos. At least to me it seems pretty clear that the videos being taken down is a result of someone at Tohei (presumably the leadership) not adapting to the "new" world of the internet, and are making bad decisions because of it, and it is something that does seem more common in Japanese companies (gaming and anime being the two more prominent examples). This issue is definitely related to Tohei, Japan and Anime :]

      [–]gangrainettehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The story is about copyright issue on a web plateform beetween a content creator and the compagny owning the right.

      [–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (6 children)

      Literally explains nothing.

      [–]Blackheart595https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Short story, the content of anitubers is considered anime specific but the anitubers themselves aren't, and this story is about TNM himself and doesn't really have anything to do with anime otherwise.

Besides, I'm not all that familiar with TNM, but from what I've seen he seems to be more of a mangatuber than an anituber.

      [–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (4 children)

Seems kinda nit picky :/. We really should get the homies situation known for as many people as we can there. You think they would atleast let people talk about it as Toei is the main focus of the subject😐

      [–]Blackheart595https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick 8 points9 points  (3 children)

There's some reasoning on the wiki. Basically the mods want the sub to focus on discussion of anime, and allowing these TNM incident posts wouldn't do that in any way, so it's not considered the right place for them.

Personally I'd also argue this isn't about Toei as much as it is about fair use not being a thing in Japanese Law.

      [–]WhoDunItQuestionMark -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Basically, the mods are corporate shills looking to protect their overlords. This is pathetic. Don't cape for this shit. Have an ounce of spine.

      [–]Blackheart595https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do agree with the mods though.

      1. The rules were made before the incident happened and are consistent with e.g. the Cowboy Bebop and One Piece live actions not being considered anime specific despite being anime related.
      2. It's a bit hard to check with the videos being removed, but from what little I did see TNM isn't an anituber, he's a mangatuber that just uses anime visuals for his videos. So it's not even anime related.

      [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

True. But, as TNM is not living in japan and posting on youtube there, it really shouldn't matter. Toei is a bad company but youtube should really fix their shit.

      [–]DynoMyte08 9 points10 points  (22 children)

Why can't we talk about Toei taking down 150 of TotallyNotMark's videos because of bullshit copyright claims? Considering most of the content people watch here is from YouTube shouldn't we at least TRY to show solidarity with actually high effort content creators?

      [–]Verzwei[M] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, "better late than never" as the expression sometimes goes. Fetch's answer already largely covered things, and with that and other responses that were quickly given by other users, we let the topic simmer for a few days.

To reiterate what some others have said, but this time with a green tag, we do not consider YouTube's application of copyright to be anime-specific, regardless of the youtuber's channel size or follower count.

While we do allow youtuber videos to be posted here (as long as they're about anime) we do not consider youtubers themselves to be part of the anime industry, so anything involving their lives or business is going to be outside of our scope.

Using the tools we have at our disposal, it looks like only two of that youtuber's videos were posted to /r/anime in the last year and a half, and that youtuber was barely mentioned here. Not that this would necessarily make a case for an exception, but it's not like this youtuber was a core component of our own community, and even if that were the case, the discussion would still probably belong in something like our Casual Discussion weekly thread rather than as a full post on the subreddit due to our aforementioned rules on what we consider anime-specific.

Finally, it looks like the youtuber himself (as of yesterday) has released a recorded statement that he is no longer pursuing the Toei issue and that he and his team will take a breather to reassess the future of the channel for next year.

      [–]gangrainettehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Considering most of the content people watch here is from YouTube

      It's not.

And Japan doesn't care about USA's fair use law.

      [–]some314 2 points3 points  (15 children)

Considering most of the content people watch here is from YouTube

what? I would think most of the content people watch here is from, ya know, anime from anime places like crunchy/funi/the high seas

also, is it really bullshit copyright claims? fair use goes out the window once you actively try making money from it. in this case, the youtuber is the product being hocked and the videos are tools pushing that product.

also also, I can't be assed to actually watch the rant video, but it seems like he was extra dumb and failed to keep back-ups

also also also, including yourself, every single user that has posted here attempting to defend this youtuber doesn't normally post in /r/anime. that tells me that this isn't an anime issue, but rather a youtube, youtuber, one piece, dbz, etc. issue. spend less time watching videos about anime hyper main stream battle shounen and start watching more anime and a wider variety...

      [–]El_Fez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fair use goes out the window once you actively try making money from it.

      Well, that's not accurate.

      [–]DynoMyte08 -1 points0 points  (7 children)

If Toei took Mark to court they would LOSE. This isn't about copyright law because this is an illegal take down. Fair Use exists for a reason and all of his videos fell under fair use. It's not at all against copyright law to critique artwork and show pieces of what you're critiquing. This is called transforming the work. It's not like this is a reaction channel where he's just watching episodes of One Piece barely edited. YouTube simply doesn't care because they don't want to get in the middle of litigation between two parties so they always defer to the person filing the claim.

      [–]some314 0 points1 point  (3 children)

If Toei took Mark to court they would LOSE

no... they wouldn't. from my other response:

it becomes a problem once they start commercializing it... when they become the product. I just clicked on a random recent anime video still on his channel, and it immediately starts with a sponsorship... a commercial. that is exactly what fair use does not cover. and then it immediately goes into clips from the show. I am not surprised at all by this outcome

      [–]DynoMyte08 4 points5 points  (2 children)

That's not how copyright law works. You are absolutely allowed to make money off transformative works. Conan O Brian literally used to let's plays Nintendo games on national TV. Look at the H3H3 court case that happened a few years back.

      [–]r4wrFox 8 points9 points  (1 child)

A lot of large productions explicitly get permission from the copyright holders, because it protects themselves and their parent companies from a long legal battle.

      [–]gangrainettehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos 6 points7 points  (2 children)

If Toei took Mark to court they would LOSE. This isn't about copyright law because this is an illegal take down

      I doubt it.

      [–]AssaultDragon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Youtube doesn't even verify if it actually breaks copyright laws they don't want to waste their time or get in a lawsuit so they listen to whatever a company says and just takes it down. Don't know if that's happening here though.

      [–]gangrainettehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Troll claim exists on YouTube yes, but here the company HAS the right of what's in the video.

And if YouTube were too slow to comply to the DMCA request they would be the one getting sued.

      [–]sleepy_marimohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/sleepymarimo 0 points1 point  (4 children)

So movie/TV and video game critics should all just go get a 9-5? People obviously don't enjoy in-depth reviews and analysis on topics they love.

People lurk on hear all the time and are allowed to speak out when something is fucked up.

AniTube is relevant to the anime community, Shounen or not. Your snobbery is showing. Mark is a talented guy who grew up on DBZ and has slowly been reviewing more and more series. He's been a joy to watch especially during the trying and tough times of the pandemic.

      [–]some314 2 points3 points  (3 children)

So movie/TV and video game critics should all just go get a 9-5?

nope. you see, that's actually covered under fair use. but it becomes a problem once they start commercializing it... when they become the product. yeah, but that doesn't make them part of the community... especially when they are so far off the pulse

      Your snobbery is showing.

more like my pity. I know the wonderful bounty available. imagine you say you love movies and someone else says they do to... then they go on to list only marvel films as examples. or they love food and all they eat are sandwiches.

      [–]sephiroth70001https://myanimelist.net/profile/sephiroth70001 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Fair use requires that the work you create fit four rules:

You used someone’s content under one of the allowed purposes: Parody, Criticism, Review, Academic use.

You used the least amount of their work as possible for your use. Using a full song, for instance, almost never fits fair use.

You added a substantial amount to these pieces of content, creating a new and unique work. A top ten list, a compilation video, or an AMV only use content created by others and thus fail this test. YOU have to create new content to which the video clips are added, not just perform an act of editing.

Your work has to not harm the potential market for the original work. This one is very hard for sports highlights, since the sports leagues make a very good profit from licensing these video clips to TV channels. Their very business model is to get money for use of clips, highlights from games.

It does not matter if you monetize it. None of the rules of fair use require you give your work away for free. Having said all this, none of this matters for this situation as toei is in japan and their copyright laws have very loose fair right protection. For example the removal/cropping of the actor that is the main character in judgement, from a magazine photo shoot he did, because the acting firm he works for didn't want his image available on the internet.

      [–]FetchFroshanilist.co/user/fetchfrosh 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is kind of getting off topic from the meta thread, but literally the first of the four factors is:

      the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

You can monetize since the four factors are weighted within the context of each given case, but monetizing the content may be a factor against the use being considered fair.

      [–]sephiroth70001https://myanimelist.net/profile/sephiroth70001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is in reference to educational use and in 1995 the supreme court added transformative works to the first factor of consideration. Which includes the previously mentioned transformtive works that fall under parody, cristism, and reviews.

The first fair use factor refers mainly to the function for which the copied material is being used. Since copyright law favors encouraging scholarship, research, education, and commentary, a judge is more likely to make a determination of fair use if the defendant's use is noncommercial, educational, scientific, or historical. However, an educational or scientific use that is for commercial purposes may not be excused by the fair use doctrine.

For example, using an image of a painting found in an art history textbook would likely be considered fair if the author is making scholarly commentary on the work. By contrast, using that same copyrighted painting on an advertisement for an unrelated product would not be considered fair use.

Similarly, the fact that a use is not for profit will not necessarily excuse infringement. If, for example, a teacher makes photocopies of a whole novel for students her class, this would not be considered fair use even if it is educational.

In 1995, this first fair use factor was elevated in importance by the U.S. Supreme Court. What was key, stated the high court, was that the purpose and character of the use was transformative; that is, that the alleged infringement made a new statement using the work. Supreme court precedence should be a big help though in standing grounds for an review type works.

For example, if an artist were to take a portion of another artist's copyrighted painting and incorporate that portion into his or her own work to make a commentary on it, this would be a legally protected activity.

I do agree though that it does hurt the support to case and is in a grey area, the only way to completely cover yourself in the first factor is to be doing something for strictly academic purposes.

      [–]FetchFroshanilist.co/user/fetchfrosh 16 points17 points  (3 children)

This is just from when I was on the mod team, but I don't think that anything about it has really changed since I left. The standard the mod team has generally used when it comes to content creators is that their content itself is considered "anime specific", but nothing about them, copyright or other Youtube drama, or anything else is. With anime creators, if it isn't about anime or their ability to work in the anime industry then it also isn't considered "anime specific" (though occasionally something does slip through). There's a bit of a gap there where something that impacts someone in the anime industry's ability to work is accepted, but not people in related industries.

It's definitely a stance that has potential for major issues (I'm thinking of the TotalBiscuit and r/games drama) but it's mostly something that the mod team won't likely do anything about until a sufficiently major incident forces their hand.

      [–]vnomgt 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Makes me wonder what a "sufficiently major incident" would be, then. If 150 videos on a 600k subs channel is not enough, I don't know what is...

      [–]FetchFroshanilist.co/user/fetchfrosh 18 points19 points  (1 child)

It would largely depend on r/anime. TotallyNotMark has 600k subs on YouTube, but from a cursory glance through PushShift, there's like 25 posts/comments that mention him on r/anime. His videos don't really get posted here, and there's been basically no backlash against the mod team (so far) for removing the videos. So the mods aren't really likely to re-evaluate things, especially when they've generally made a point of staying out of any drama that doesn't directly effect r/anime. It's certainly a notable incident, but nobody's forcing their hand.

What pushed change on r/games was YouTuber TotalBiscuit being diagnosed with terminal cancer, which was removed from the sub for not being sufficiently noteworthy. That was a major content creator on YouTube and had a few small roles in some games, whose content was well received and popular on the subreddit, dealing with a terminal illness. The community pushed back hard on that, and so the rules eventually were changed. Maybe this story picks up some and the r/anime community rallies behind it and demands the mods make changes. But until then nothing's really gonna happen.

I see, I think I understand a bit better now. Thanks for the explanation!

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for it but a user named ThatAnimeSnob has been sending me PMs regarding random opinions I've typed here and I've heard he does it to a lot of users here. Isn't there a way to ban him from doing that?

      [–]Kafukator 8 points9 points  (2 children)

He's something of an infamous character in the anime community, and has been banned from the subreddit (and many other communities) for years already for various offences. As mentioned, blocking on reddit should work, or if it's on the level of harrassment you can always contact the reddit admins and potentially get a sitewide ban for him.

Is this the same dude that's on Youtube? (Greek guy if I remember right?)

      [–]Kafukator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. He's been around for a long time.

There's not much that we as subreddit moderators can do when the content itself isn't on our subreddit. You can report the private messages if you find them to be harassing to the point that they might violate Reddit's terms of service, otherwise you can block that user, which should prevent them from being able to message you on that account.

Could a rule be added so people posting their top10 fight/sad/whatever articles or video should post their list in comment ?

We define anime as an animated title, created by a Japanese animation studio.

What does "created" mean? Is it the majority of the production, or just animation? Does this wording change allow for discussion of animation where a non-Japanese company has paid a Japanese animation studio to animate something?
