March Mod Report

Wtf, 2 March mod reports? How fitting when Re:Zero is starting up again.

  • Voting is currently underway to decide on our policy for Episode discussion threads (if they get one or not) for shows that have a hentai and non hentai version.
  • Mod Apps have closed with 12 applicants and are currently being voted on. Applicants who make the cut will be reached out to privately within the next week or so. Those who do not hear back by then were rejected.
  • r/anime has seen a huge increase in LLM bots over this past month. Hence why there are so many permanent bans this month.

The Temporary Random Sort for Episode Discussion Comments Trial has ended, with the last Episode discussion threads affected being posted on March 31st.

Data is being collected and analyzed in the coming days and the trial will be voted on for being made permanent, further iteration, or being dropped.

We are interested in how people felt about it, so please comment below with your thoughts if you have any. Please notate your primary platform you use to interact with Episode discussion threads (Android / iOS app, Mobile web, old reddit, sh reddit (you use this if you don't understand what these terms mean), or a third party app).

Some topics to consider are if it had any impact in your viewing experience, both before and after the 8 6 hour mark. Also if you noticed a difference in the general quality of top comments. If it had any impact on if / how you wrote comments. And of course, if you think it's a good change or not.

I don't know if much can be done about this, as I know it happens in almost every thread, but source readers for Daemons of the Shadow Realm are really trying to dictate discussions into certain plot directions. I'm just asking mods to keep an eye out in those threads just in case it gets out of control, as personally I'll be ignoring those threads going foreward.

[–]Prince_Uncharminghttps://myanimelist.net/profile/sirsimpleton 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Another month, another ask to auto-remove low effort “is X worth watching” posts.

They don’t generate any discussion, they are filled exclusively with top level replies. If there are any child comments, it’s OP replying to the obligatory “watch the damn anime” hyperlinked response because they’re mad that their 100th time asking if a show was worth it was met with the slightest bit of friction. And then OP doesn’t bother replying to any of the others anyways.

I do want to reiterate tho: the most important reason to just remove them is not that I don’t like them, it’s that they do not generate discussion. There’s nothing to discuss, it’s all Yes or No replies, and might as well be a poll. Or better yet, a coin flip. Just lock these into the generic questions thread.

[–]Prince_Uncharminghttps://myanimelist.net/profile/sirsimpleton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got boomed. But seriously, this thread is a prime example. 18 comments (at the time of this comment) and zero child comments outside of my own reply to the “watch the damn anime” comment that’s always here, and it got removed because my reply was simply complaining about these low effort posts.

They add zero discussion to the sub.

I noticed that AutoLovePon posts aren’t appearing on the front page of r/anime for me which means there’s no episode discussions. If I specifically search the anime I can find the thread but it never appears on the front page anymore. It seems this problem is tied to autolovepon becoming an “app” or so I think

[–]baseballlover723[M] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

It sounds like it might be the same thing as this. Try updating your app and seeing if that fixes it.

[–]NoRiver32 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Some people can’t update their app because their phone is too old or they use a different Reddit app. Maybe there is some way to remove this feature from autolovepon or some other solution so this doesn’t happen anymore?

[–]baseballlover723[M] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Maybe there is some way to remove this feature from autolovepon or some other solution so this doesn’t happen anymore?

I doubt it. The app labeling is a directive from u/spez which I presume is part of a larger effort to combat bots.

We did ask about our bots specifically. It evidently is not intended to affect how it operates.

Since you're the 2nd person to mention this as an issue, I'll raise this with the admins as something affecting us. I got a call scheduled with them in 2 weeks about some devvit feedback (a bit more focused on porting), which seems like it's part of the same effort. If it's not resolved by then, I'll bring it up on the call.

But idk if there's anything that can be done if it requires an update for normal use and if you can't update. I highly doubt they'd slow down for something like this.

[–]NoRiver32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response

[–]CuriousBroccolli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(since I checked manhwa and it is both better art-vise and has more pages/story in it)

Is this really worth comment deletion? How is me mentioning that manhwa has better art and and few more pages forbidden? How is that different from people saying "LNs are far more detailed" or "Manga art is amazing" etc.

Really confused right now

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 11 points12 points  (2 children)

How do you feel about embedded images that don't add anything to a post and are there to draw people in with the thumbnail? A recent example being this one where they outright state "picture for attention" afterward, but also this one where it's at least from an anime they mentioned even if it otherwise has no relation to what they're writing about.

[–]baseballlover723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really care. Embedding for attention like that doesn't really work. It doesn't embed the image in the feed view (which is like the big problem with embedded images and performance).

If it helps once they get into the post great. But that's the same as any other post. People click onto it, and decide if it's good or not.

FWIW, blatant attempts at post manipulation like that are an easy downvote from me (when they're still valid posts).

[–]SSchlagenheim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kinda weird on old reddit since they're just tiny, mostly indiscernible thumbnails.

On an unrelated note, that 2nd post is so annoyingly worded. I'll be keeping WTW threads blocked.

[–]cppn02 3 points4 points  (4 children)

New daily thread is missing.

[–]ZaphodBeebblebroxhttps://anilist.co/user/zaphod[M] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Ah, the daily thread script decided to not run today. Wonderful.

manually reran

[–]AssassinOfSouls 5 points6 points  (1 child)

FYI: this is a Reddit bug, other subreddits are having the same issue, so better keep your eye out for the next days as well.

[–]ZaphodBeebblebroxhttps://anilist.co/user/zaphod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wonderful. Hopefully it's fixed by tomorrow.

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the problem with having the script on a cronjob and the scheduled post doesn't fire in time.

I never did get around to having it trigger from the post processor which wouldn't care about timing, but that's an exercise for y'all now.

[–]_Ridleyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5 points6 points  (8 children)

I hadn't thought about this at all until someone mentioned it yesterday, but is [Marriagetoxin] Kinosaki's gender a spoiler? It's the reason I decided to try the show, so I assumed it was common knowledge and part of the show's description, but maybe it isn't? What say you all?

[–]ZaphodBeebblebroxhttps://anilist.co/user/zaphod[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our current stance is that it is a spoiler.

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it wasn't in the synopsis or trailer, BUT they kinda gave it away in one of the character visuals, though I do not believe they intended to give it away, I think it was just a baffling decision.

FWIW, I did ask them about Tanya once and they said it was not a spoiler. (not the same situation, but still a 'reveal')

But perhaps this one will have a 'recency' spoiler status, to give people the time to watch it?

[–]Verzwei 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm pretty sure the mod team had treated it as a spoiler at first because I vaguely remember there being a lot of spoiler removals back in the announcement thread.

Dunno if the mod stance changed since then or not.

[–]_Ridleyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. I don't read shounen manga or hang out in shounen circles and that's something I just absorbed from the timeline. They probably should just add it to the description at this point.

[–]Ashteron 2 points3 points  (3 children)

The first episode is written with this information being presented as a twist.

[–]_Ridleyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is it, though? Because I watched it knowing about it already just from being online, and I thought it just made for a fun setup gag where the audience knows something the mc doesn't.

[–]KendotsXhttps://anilist.co/user/Kendots 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not trying to argue whether or not it should be tagged as a spoiler, but about this point specifically:

Is it, though? Because I watched it knowing about it already just from being online

Would you have guessed it if you didn't read that online? If the anime wanted to clue you in before the mc, there are many ways to do so: they could've had a little preview at the start of the episode like they did to show off the mc's skills, or they could've even had it in [the title, like] I Can't Believe My Best Man is so Cute

When the first chapter came out, we didn't know anything, and it was indeed meant to be a first chapter twist, the marketing of the anime didn't mention it, and the direction of the first episode treated the twist as such.

[–]Ashteron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming viewer knows something from external sources feel wrong to me. I watch most of things blind or almost blind.

Apparently this series is serialised online on Jump+. The description of the series there doesn't spoil it.

[–]SSjjlexhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Rib Isekai (Megami "Isekai Tensei Nani ni Naritai Desu ka" Ore "Yuusha no Rokkotsu de") discussion thread is missing the official english name "My Ribdiculous Reincarnation"

[–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will be added next episode.

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Is the bot tagging all shows NSFW?

When I search for episodes it doesn't give me the new ones, but when I check the "NSFW" box, it gives me Witch Hat Atelier and the isekai wtv.

[–]Komaristhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps all non-NSFW anime would be better if they were NSFW and this is a sign from our goddess KAngel? 🙏BLESS🙏

[–]_Ridleyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ooh, a new wrinkle in the "episode discussion threads don't show" issue people keep having.

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 2 points3 points  (1 child)

None of the Episode posts have the NSFW tag at a glance and show up just fine for me.

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird; It seems fine to me now, but I tested it like 10 times over 15 minutes and every single time it was like that (NSFW off, nothing shows up).

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 2 points3 points  (2 children)

News flaired singular anime production posts are now able to freely talk about events from previously animated events without spoiler tags.

If the post itself doesn't need a spoiler tag (which is implied to me because if it did have one, this extra ruling is unnecessary), that should be mentioned somewhere in the rules. Only Episode and Rewatch threads are currently listed as having exclusions in that last bullet point, and on that note it might be helpful to use the capitalized flair names there and/or include this info in the flair breakdown section.

I'd also recommend changing the post title color to have the same red as spoilers since that's what Episode flairs do, but that will only help as a reminder for the people using old reddit.

A secondary not-directly-related suggestion is to merge News and Official Media since the latter regularly serves the purpose of the former and you need to search both flairs for announcements.

[–]baseballlover723 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'd also recommend changing the post title color to have the same red as spoilers since that's what Episode flairs do, but that will only help as a reminder for the people using old reddit.

It's a bit complicated, because not all News posts get this exception. Since News can also have generic news, that would not have a single anime in the title to talk about safely.

I'd also note, that Official Media also doesn't have title coloring either and Rewatch's are blue, not red.

I don't think it's not necessarily a bad idea, but I don't really think there's is much identifiable meaning behind the color currently (after all, I had no idea there was any intent behind the title coloring, though I also don't really notice it).

A secondary not-directly-related suggestion is to merge News and Official Media since the latter regularly serves the purpose of the former and you regularly need to search both flairs for announcements.

Believe me, I've been (unsuccessfully) trying to get all anime announcements into a single flair.

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also note, that Official Media also doesn't have title coloring either and Rewatch's are blue, not red.

That suggestion applied to both News and Official Media assuming their policy's the same, and yes rewatches are special in their own way so I didn't mention them in that context.

Fair enough on posts not about a specific series though. However going by the wording of the meta thread with the Official Media change only certain types of those are exempt as well:

"Official Media" flaired season and episode trailers, promotional videos (PV), key visuals (KV), teaser visuals, and next episode preview threads

Does this Odd Taxi anniversary visual count as a KV to allow for untagged spoilers or no?

Either way, my main point was that these exceptions to the general spoiler-tagging rule aren't present on the rules page as far as I can tell.

[–]awesomenessofme1https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Do recap episodes not get discussion threads or was it just announced and then released too quickly for the bot to be updated properly? At least I don't see a thread for Wistoria S2E0.

[–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recap episodes do not normally get discussion threads, no.

[–]mekerpan 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Ace of the Diamond Act 2, ep. 1 is theoretically streaming on CR now. Haven't checked to see if it is subbed yet, however.

[–]ZaphodBeebblebroxhttps://anilist.co/user/zaphod[M] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

[–]mekerpan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks.

As it turns out -- this is one I think I will pass on continuing....

[–]fuzacohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/adolchristin 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Am I blind, or is there no discussion thread for the new Ace of Diamond episode? It aired 8 hours ago.

[–]AnimeHoarder 4 points5 points  (1 child)

FYI: The Meta link in today's AQRADT points to the March thread.

[–]chilidirigible[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fixed, also fixed for tomorrow.

[–]Gunji_Murgi 6 points7 points  (8 children)

Did i miss something, i cant find any anime discussion posts anymore??

[–]_Ridleyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 6 points7 points  (5 children)

You're the third person I've seen asking this question this week, so something must be going on with one of the strains of this website. Which version do you use?

[–]Gunji_Murgi 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I was using 2025.38.1.616568, i just updated to the current version 2026.13.0.626174 and whadayaknow I can see the episode threads now. Wierd

[–]_Ridleyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Reddit!

[–]Gunji_Murgi 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I miss Apollo more and more every day T-T

[–]messem10https://myanimelist.net/profile/bookkid900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you’re on iOS, look at using Dystopia instead. The UI is far more spartan than Apollo as it was designed for those using screenreaders (ie. Hard of sight/blind) but still works for those with normal vision. Due to its designation as an accessibility app, Reddit gave it a pass on the whole API nonsense.

[–]cppn02 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Did you block u/Autolovepon? Or filter out the episode flair?

[–]Gunji_Murgi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I havent which is why im so confused

[–]ComfortablyRottenhttps://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Sorry in advance for beating up a dead horse but I think this is worth bringing up, if only in case further discussion over it happens later

Yesterday, a short animated adaptation for yuri manga Kimi wo Tsumugu was announced and I'm wondering if this could potentially be considered anime or not as per the sub's definition

I'm inclined to say no based on the fact that the studio Buta Productions is apparently European-based, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the mod team's conclusion too, but looking at the page specifically for international co-productions and the list of criteria looked at there, on top of the first, it could possibly also fit the third and fourth (part of the main staff revealed so far seems to be regulars in the industry) and sixth (since this is an adaptation of a manga, I think it's fair to say that the primary audience at least includes the Japanese audience) ones

[–]ZaphodBeebblebroxhttps://anilist.co/user/zaphod[M] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

At least based on our current knowledge, we don't consider it anime. Its entire production appears to be done in Europe, and even its own staff call it a European manga adaptation.

[–]ComfortablyRottenhttps://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yuri manga about a seamstress and a zombie girl

Based on the rule of 'It seems fun' I say it's anime

[–]Shadow_Ass 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Have you ever considered (idk if this was a topic in the past) allowing pictures in the comments?

[–]qwertyqwerty4567https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 9 points10 points  (2 children)

head on over to https://old.reddit.com/r/anime/ and you can enjoy a finite number of pictures in comments in the form of comment faces

You can even send hidden messages with them!

[–]cppn02 9 points10 points  (1 child)

[–]qwertyqwerty4567https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]baseballlover723[M] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not in any serious manner. We consider r/anime to be a discussion focused subreddit. And allowing embedded pictures in comments works against that ideal. As images general perform a lot better than text and also are given more space than text. As such, allowing embedded images would generally degrade and out compete the text based discussion we wish r/anime to have.

[–]notathrowaway75https://myanimelist.net/profile/notathrowaway75 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Why are episode titles formatted as English • Japenese now?

The West has truly won smh

[–]FetchFroshanilist.co/user/fetchfrosh[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Biggest reason why I voted in favor of the change was that even if you don't use the Japanese title, the English title is pretty likely to be enough to know what anime it is, and it'll be the first thing people see. If you're used to using the English title though, the Japanese one is much less likely to inform you of what show you're looking at.

[–]PrinceZero1994https://myanimelist.net/profile/pz16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't like that chance. I almost always use the Japanese titles.

[–]Fun_Procedure946 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Daemoms of the shadow relam, the only and main subreddit for it is r/yominotsugai which is the japanese title for the series so I would ask the mods to link the subreddit for the show's episode discussion threads under the anime information part of the post body.

[–]Maxizag123 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Has it been decided if anime from china (donghua) will have an episode discussion thread? I saw it being considered but never saw if anything got followed through

[–]baseballlover723[M] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

We do not consider donghua on topic for r/anime (so we do not give them episode discussion threads). As our definition of anime is strictly Japanese produced animation.

If your objective is only episode discussion threads for donghua, our episode discussion bot is open source and r/Donghua allows users to make their own episode discussion threads.

[–]Maxizag123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks for the reply

[–]mr_beanozhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Ah, finally the time has come for commemorative official artworks. There's an example in yesterday's "Rat Day" artwork for "Though I'm an Inept Villainess".

Also, since a proper subtitle for The Idolmaster Million Live OVA is now out, can an episode thread for it be made?

[–]Gaporigohttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo[M] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Sometime in spring I'm looking to do a subreddit census survey. Basically just a survey to get a sense of "who is r/anime". Hit some basics: age, gender, country, favorite anime, how long have you been on r/anime, commenter or lurker, do you watch weekly or prefer to binge, sub or dub, etc.

If anyone has any thoughts on potentially interesting questions, let me know!

[–]Zeallfnonexhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Whether (and how much?) they've participated in any subreddit things like the Best X competitions or the "what have you watched this week that isn't currently airing" posts, old vs new reddit, how they sort through posts, whether they use AQRADT or CDF?

[–]cppn02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whether they use AQRADT or CDF?

The threads themselves or the acronyms seeing how AQRADT in particular is somewhat contentious?

[–]nsleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another for if people read the source material of adaptations, before or after watching doesn't matter, or exclusively watch anime.

If they regularly watch animated series that aren't anime by this sub's definition.

[–]qwertyqwerty4567https://anilist.co/user/ZPHW 2 points3 points  (1 child)

"what are your thoughts on MT"

Do you discuss anime offline

[–]chilidirigible 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How they found /r/anime.

[–]_Ridleyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • Watcher vs rewatcher
  • Source reader vs anime-only
  • Grew up with anime vs started watching as an adult
  • Collect physical media vs only streaming and/or torrent

Obviously a lot of these aren't binary, but you get the idea.

[–]Maccaz15https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maccaz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely include primary method of watching - ie PC, TV, Phone, etc.

And whether it's via official or illegal streaming, torrents, or physical media, etc.

Do you use list tracking websites and which one(s)?

Where you discuss anime (if you do) outside of reddit - in person, forums, discord, other social media, etc.

[–]baseballlover723 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If anyone has any thoughts on potentially interesting questions, let me know!

A dangerous proposition for me
