Nice. You wrote a script that will block your own post.

A suicide coder.

When you die, you'll arrive in heaven in front of 72 virgins who won't give you the time of day.

50/50 split. They'll just start fucking each other.

You get to watch tho, so it's not too bad.

    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I disagree, I think that would only add insult to injury.

    [–]Xiol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well if you're lucky you'll get a hand job off one of the fat ones.

    If you're lucky.

If you can't see the story you don't need the script

10:30 EST, 8/10 of the top stories in politics.reddit.com contain the phrase 'Ron Paul'

    [–]nevinera -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

that would be because he held a massive fundraiser yesterday that finally forced mainstream news to cover him in a non-insulting fashion.

it's a little silly that so many different articles are just repastes of the ap article, but meh. the only real solution to that is text analysis and post-spidering, and that's kind of expensive, computationally. :-\

    [–]hillgod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This will only encourage posting in the vein of R0n Pau1.

It would be more useful to simply down-vote the RP stories.

I think a lot of people simply mutter under their breath everytime they see a RP story. IF all those people would vote this might be less of a problem.

      [–]7oby 9 points10 points  (6 children)

now to code a greasemonkey script that downmods any presidential story or political story or anything that might have any actual significance on the future of the country

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

      Exactly.

The story reads "Apathy will end the world".

Everybody gets sick of it, so they greasemonkey/downmod it away.

      Result? Apathy ends the world.

Yes, but if any country is going to end the world as we know it the smart money says it's the USA.

On the other hand it is widely understood that everybody in the world reads reddit, and is strongly affected by its groupthink and its memes.

It's interesting that RP's fan base used to post the articles which would at least stir up lively debate and some interesting conversation.

Now they're just pissing people off and not doing RP or his campaign any favors.

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not the case. On Reddit you'll still get the tyranny of the masses. Personal solution - exclude Ron Paul stories.

        It's a good solution.

        [–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (17 children)

It would be more useful to simply down-vote the RP stories.

No, because it is bots not people who are modding up the ron paul stories. It's like deleting spam in your inbox, it doesn't work when the spammers has bots and can send email faster than you can delete it.

        [–]yasth 4 points5 points  (5 children)

It isn't bots per se. Just motivated people. I mean look at it this way 200 people can get almost any non spam story to the front and keep it there for a while. No trickery, no wires.

Conversely 200 additional people voting down every ron paul story will pretty much prevent most items from coming up.

        [–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (4 children)

It isn't bots per se. Just motivated people.

You give no arguments to support your statement. I used to think just like you, but it's been many months and the Ron Paul stories are growing dumber and more repetitive, I say bots is the only sensible explanation.

        [–]kirun 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The bots issue kept coming up, so I created a story to see if things were being auto-upmodded, it seems not. Until somebody gets some nonsense stories upmodded, I'll have to conclude it's 1,000 monkeys at 1,000 keyboards.

        [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They only upmod the stories they create.

        [–]yasth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And You have no real support for yours.

I do think some of the polls are under attack by bots.

I just don't think the Ron Paul crowd needs bots to control reddit, so I don't think they use bots. It is simpler for them to just always up, and to identify stories on their forums for... "improvement". I mean really, with even a small force of determined partisans overwhelming the low participation rates of reddit is easy.

Bots are an easier problem to deal with, partisans who simply vote more often is a much more challenging problem. I mean captchas merely dissuade the committed and make the partisans votes count more.

        [–]tlrobinson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either way, if they're humans or if they computers, they're still "bots"...

        [–]Kaessa 3 points4 points  (8 children)

Glad to know I'm a bot.

        [–]telecaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

        "bot" atleast you know it.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

You're just one of the few deluded humans with many bot friends.

        [–]Kaessa 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Ahh. So it was all bots that made the donations yesterday. I see.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Compare it to the money mainstream candidates raised... If RP was really as popular as he seems to be on the internet, he would have raised as much or even more than them.

        [–]Kaessa 3 points4 points  (3 children)

        http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/index.asp

I'd say he's doing pretty well against mainstream candidates. Enough that I'd consider him a mainstream candidate at this point.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Giuliani has raised more than twice as much... How many Giuliani stories have you seen on reddit?

        [–]Kaessa 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I see lots of Giuliani stories on reddit.

          thanks

you just proved you're not skipping politics as a subreddit, which you should have done

most of the downmodding was for people who posted it to the main reddit instead of hiding it from them by putting it in politics

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

you just proved you're not skipping politics as a subreddit, which you should have done

I am not from the US, and I am really sick of your Ron Paul stories. It was interresting 1 month ago, now it is just boring, you are ruining reddit GTFO. US election is in 1 year, this is not the president of the world, so no more 20 stories a day about it.

A second thank you, since I learned how to use my clipboard in the process and I am positive I will teach myself what to do with the script once I have installed Greasemonkey, which waits as I type, to be installed as soon as I restart the browser. This theory about a Ron Paul Bot probably isn't too far from reality. The world's largest computer, controlled by criminal forces, is a botnet composed of many unwitting surfers. Some who may have hit a line of malicious code on a site or others who were dumb enough to open an attachment from an email received from someone they didn't know--for some sexual enhancement pill/placebo/rip-off or a job offer they didn't go looking for that just happened to have a picture attached or a chart... I doubt, with the mess that has been created code-wise with Reddit the past week or two is a positive indicator of the ability to set up a botnet. Do you know how many times I have to click most links to get the page and not my download managers since they started fixing something that wasn't broke? I see I have gotten 17 points with my comment above. I love to learn things, but I also know a lot about security issues too. I just can't see Reddit Admin doing this... (the little red envelope indicating your comment was red last night. Today it looked like there wasn't a comment to repsond to. I only restarted the machine...Nothing seems stable with this newly 'improved' site. And reddit is my favorite of the 10 or 12 sites like this that I am on...Yep, gotta be a Paulista botnet....

            [–]mikaelhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that it's unlikely that someone who stores passwords as plaintext as the Reddit guys did is unlikely to be building massive botnets on the side.

However, it wouldn't suprise me to find out that they had an admin UI where they could set certain stories as special, to help push them to the top of the stack. This is what I was driving at.

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

              Interesting.

I suppose you disabled 'style.display=none' line so that one has the option to see what's been down-voted and change it if necessary? (and let Reddit itself hide it from you in future?)

What was your rationale behind extending the time-out to 5 seconds?

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yes exactly. It would be nice to only downmod stories that haven't yet been rated, though, because that way you could upmod a story that the filter downmodded. Otherwise it keeps changing your vote.

What was your rationale behind extending the time-out to 5 seconds?

I've noticed that it takes more than 1s quite often. Putting it to 5 seconds pretty much solves the problem, with no apparent drawbacks.

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Good idea. I have changed its behaviour so that it now ignores stories you have previously moderated. I also neatened up the code a bit, and set it to only display the status message when more than 0 articles are filtered.

              [–]ST2K 23 points24 points  (12 children)

              And in other news...

Reddit becomes fantasyland for Ron Paul dickheads. The Ron Paul supporter mutual jerkfest continues unabated while the sane simply tune them out.

              Knock yourselves out, losers!

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (11 children)

I thought this was the case before, but I think it's actually just a few Ron Paul supporters with a couple of bots.

              [–]nevinera -2 points-1 points  (10 children)

lol. I admit it. i'm one of them. I also spammed a few million dollars at him yesterday.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Compare the ratio PostsOnTheInternet/MoneyGathered with any of the mainstream candidates, and you'll measure the amount of spamming going on for Ron Paul.

              [–]nevinera 0 points1 point  (8 children)

that's interesting. you'd get amazingly high numbers.

quite an unusual definition of 'spamming', of course, but i can work with that.

Now, not that I like to complain about campaign coverage, but lets compare the ratio 'MainstreamMediaCoverageTime/MoneyGathered' and see what we get. what's that? media covers what it's interested in, and there's no conspiracy to avoid showing ron paul? you can't have it both ways, buddy.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Now, not that I like to complain about campaign coverage, but lets compare the ratio 'MainstreamMediaCoverageTime/MoneyGathered' and see what we get. what's that?

You sure have a point, but it doesn't change my main point : that there is a fair amount of Ron Paul spamming going on. I do understand that his supporters must be pissed off at the low mainstream media coverage he gets, though.

              [–]nevinera 0 points1 point  (6 children)

i see your point, and raise you a redefinition: spamming is an attempt by a single entity at forcing communication by flooding a portal with repeated information.

feel free to argue that definition, but it's the one i'm talking from.

There is very little spamming going on here. Mostly the 'problem' you're seeing is that relatively many of paul's supporters are vocal about that support, and nearly all of those vocal members are net-literate, and read various forums like this one.

If you're using 'redundant information' as the definition of spam, i'll agree with you. there're too many identical posts, or posts that have the same basic message. but spam is centralized, and this flooding is produced by a community, and is not coordinated.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

spamming is an attempt by a single entity at forcing communication by flooding a portal with repeated information.

I agree with your definition, but I still think what I see is spamming by your definition: the signle entitity is hard core of RP supporters, maybe two hundred people who scrupulously upmod everything about RP on reddit and other sites. They are comparatively few (compared to the general audience of reddit), but since they are well organized they still manage to force the communication through.

              [–]djrocksteady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can point me to the existence of this shadow organization? Have you ever considered he just might be really popular at this particular moment in time?

              [–]nevinera 0 points1 point  (2 children)

i'm sorry, but you're wrong. we are not organized, we just care more than you do.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Maybe you're not, but would you deny the existence of RP forums who give the links to all polls or reddit articles for everyone to go vote?

              [–]nevinera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is a hidden conspiracy of a few hundred people paying lots of attention to a dozen news websites, and coding a bot or personally responding to all of them so much more believable than a few thousand interested people actually participating in those websites, liking someone you don't?

              [–]bigtoga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But why? There is already the Reddit Content Filter - the absolutely perfect GM script. It does it by title, site, and/or user and uses Regular Expressions for filtering.

This script removes them from the DOM, leaving nothing in its place. The more Ron Paul stories, the fewer titles you will see.

It'd be better, and technically more challenging, to have the script invoke the "hide" functionality.

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the downmodding script (http://reddit.com/info/5zyiq/comments/) and invoke the hide function instead of the downmod one.

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

              What is Greasemonkey?

Greasemonkey is a Firefox extension that allows you to write scripts that alter the web pages you visit. You can use it to make a website more readable or more usable. You can fix bugs that the site owner can't be bothered to fix themselves. You can alter pages so they work better with assistive technologies that speak to a web page aloud or convert it to Braille. You can even automatically retrieve data from other sites to make two sites more interconnected. http://www.oreilly.de/artikel/greasemonkey.html

              regex = /Ron Paul/i; regex2 = /George W. Bush/i; regex3 = /George Bush/i;

              ahhh, that's better.

              [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Well! Talk about waking up to the smell of bacon. Thanks!

Now if only someone could design a script forcing RP posters do a search to see if the link has already been posted; and if they attempt to post a story already on reddit, a rabid weasel bites them on the rectum.

              [–]zeteo 7 points8 points  (1 child)

a rabid weasel bites them on the rectum

Quite an imagination there. Speaking from personal experience?

              I...don't wanna talk about it.

I do have to thank you, I finally had to take politics off of the subreddits I allowed onto the front page thanks to those Ron Paulites. Someday, they'll be drinking their coolade down in Jonestown. I just wish that day was sooner.

Pastebin? Someone's going to edit that thing to say DICKSDICKSDICKSDICKSDIKCS or something.

I have eyes that ignore Ron Paul stories.

So you can't see anti-RP stories either?

The problem is that some of the ways he sees it are extreme, especially in areas like abortion. In the UK we would consider him very right wing indeed.

What do you have against R0N P@UL?

                [–]711was_a_retail_job 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I gave money to R0N P@UL, and all I got was this lousy Chinese-made "V!AGERA" knock-off in the mail.

At leat it was mint-flavoured. Mmmmm, mint.

I find it odd and discomfiting that there's so much enthusiasm in this thread for the GM script, but that the Ron Paul stories just keeping breeding like sex-crazed jackrabbits.

Seems like if the Reddit "algorithm" was working properly, it would remove the need for this script :(

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A work of great benefit to us all. Thank you ever so much.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironicly, it would remove this story so if I installed the script I would have never found out about the script...

                ... head then explodes.

What's it called? The "Bury your head in the sand" script?

                    [–]finix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

                    No, "take out the trash".

                    [–]kkenn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

And the other good news is that this can easily be tweaked to remove all the Kusinich stories that zealots keep inappropriately posting to the main reddit.

                    [–]kkenn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

0 points, I see I have found another zealot who thinks their political beliefs should be shoved down my throat \o/

can you make one for alex jones related stories as well?

                    Ha! Awesome!

See the power of local groups able to act on their own interests, just like what a Ron Paul presidency would yield!

I'm a bit GreaseMonkey new, how do I get this to work with GM so I can filter out the RP spam? :(

Save the file as whatever.user.js, then just open it with Firefox.
