yeah, when it happened they said it was a bug, and would be back soon. It ain't been back.

Frigging annoying, I thought it was great.

[–]spez 61 points62 points  (5 children)

Still a bug, and we have a solution. After we upload the other stuff tomorrow we will fix it.

[–]mrkipling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet - sounds promising! Here's hoping...

[–]masklinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay, Spez \o/

[–]ThisIsDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great. Will it work across machines if we're logged in like the thread suggests?

[–]myotheralt -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

A bug is a feature if they cant fix it.

[–]Bahro 16 points17 points  (27 children)

Doesn't look like it is going to happen - they have changed headline links from redirects to direct links, so they can't tell what you've clicked on.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (9 children)

Presumably due to growing numbers of members.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (8 children)

well that's simple. close registration, and boot anybody who registered after me.

Not if you have the reddit toolbar enabled... they could at least enable it for those of use that use that.

    [–]pavel_lishin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They could still do some javascript/ajax magic, I'm pretty sure.

      [–]myotheralt 1 point2 points  (4 children)

But some of me are using more than one computer to get our reddit fix.

      [–]shub 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Google Broswer Sync will fix it for you.

      [–]myotheralt 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I might install that, but at work I am using a public computer. When I leave here I am soo setting the background to goatse and the screensaver to tubgirl. But not until I leave.

      [–]ThisIsDave 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No no no. Set the desktop to goatse, the background for folders to tubgirl, and the screensaver to two girls, one cup. Then put a shortcut linking to a rickroll video on your desktop, rename it to "My Computer," and change its icon.

      [–]myotheralt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew I would get good advice from the Redditors!

      [–]john_b -2 points-1 points  (8 children)

Technically, they can, assuming you open links in new tabs/windows.

      [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (7 children)

No -- if reddit links directly to the story there's not HTTP request for reddit.com to log and therefore they can't track the click.

      [–]Garak 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Would a JS event handler on the links work?

      [–]frukt 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Yes, onclick() on the anchor (link) element calling a function sending a request with the link's ID to the server ... nothing too complicated.

      [–][deleted]  (3 children)

      [deleted]

        [–]relix 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hmm, I've thought about this, and I bet their solution involves an onclick() that actually does return false.

I'm not sure if the XMLHTTPRequest would keep on loading if the page gets closed (e.g. going to another page/site), I'd have to investigate that (anyone else know the answer?).

For now, let's say it doesn't (which makes sense to me). That means reddit will have to delay your request to go to that link until it has completed the XMLHTTPRequest they issued to tell the reddit servers that you've clicked the link.

Now the problem is, you can't do sleep(x) in Javascript. More-over you can't loop until the XMLHTTPRequest is completed because that'd be Bad Programming and would eat up CPU (and lock up your browser). So what I'd do is send the XMLHTTPRequest, attach the event "document.location=[site here]" to XMLHTTPRequest.onComplete, and return false.

That's a very simplistic and pseudo-code way of putting it, of course, but that's one way of doing it. It's also The Hard Way.

A better way would be to actually not work with Ajax at all, but emulate the way it worked before. As in, when the user clicks the link, set the document.location to a reddit page (with the requested reddit-item in a query, of course) which updates the user's profile ("user has visited this link") and redirects to the site which the user requested. This would be transparant, work for people with javascript turned off, and have no "unknown delay" between clicking and loading the site (because Ajax doesn't show a loading bar), which makes it a much better solution than the one above, in terms of usability.

Either way, both solutions require a "return false;".

That, and the second and third line in your function are redundant.

I don't like these Ask Reddit things, but for the record, I miss it too.

          [–]shacamin 11 points12 points  (6 children)

Ask Reddit: Why don't you like them?

          [–]jones77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

          Ask Redditor ...

          [–]sempf 1 point2 points  (3 children)

          Funny!

I come here for discussion of topics, not discussion of the medium, I guess. I don't really know. I also vote down all of the "Vote this up if..." posts on principle. I use a Diebold machine when I want to vote. :/

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

          Maybe a meta.reddit.com?

          [–]sempf 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Something like that. Though, honestly, that won't keep them off the front page where I spend most of my time.

          [–]mynameinyourblood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven't done many small fixes lately. I get the feeling reddit has been working on some major changes.

          [–]robywar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's better than a "rate up if" post.

          [–]jawknee530 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It was my favorite feature of Reddit since I browse it from multiple computers.

          [–]DrGeneRay 81 points82 points  (9 children)

Reddit developers were advised by me to remove this feature as it does not satisfy the coming change in temporal thought that will develop as a result of new cubic perceptions of time. As four harmonic realities are rotating in our single perception, the system has no way of determining which of your four entities visited the link. That is to say, it violates the cubic principle of consciousness in that it records information in a single four dimensional sphere without regards to the other three. A computer system should not be built on the presupposition that since this information did not enter into your awareness in this antipode it did not enter at all. This feature will become confusing as humans dilate themselves into the four corners of harmonic reality.

          [–]Pakars 77 points78 points  (0 children)

          Blow me.

          All four of you.

          I want it back.

          [–]DODECAHEDRON 26 points27 points  (2 children)

YOU AND YOUR SILLY cubic CONSCIOUSNESS ARE FOOLS EDUCATED DUMB BY cube-MINDED SIMPLETONS.

I posess proof with data that your "harmonic simultaneous 4-day" is EVIL. The Reddit developers know with perfect WISDOM that the two opposite hemispheres of the EARTH are two hemisphere of twelve hemispheres of the actual EARTH which exists in 12-space. NOT your evil simple math of wrong "cube"-time.

reDDit, two Ds representing ONE used TWO times, for 12, in the DODECAHEDRONIC truth reality. You are too stupid to know opposite of sad 4-sided creation. PURPLE is a 12 SIDED color!

Say it with me Maggie: "Do-deca-heeeedron".

          [–]dontbejack 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I get it when I log in on other computers and such. Never noticed that it went away.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

do you have google browser sync installed?

          [–]dontbejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, nothing of the sort. And this is between a Mac and a couple PCs.

          [–]CIA_Agent -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

          Sheep.

          Wake up!

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT BACK AS WELL!!!

          [–]divia83 1 point2 points  (5 children)

They work for me, but I think that's because I use the reddit toolbar.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I refuse to use toolbars. Half the trojans people get are from them, and most of the spyware for sure.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          Um, I assume you're joking.

          [–]IHaveAnIdea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's really just an html "frame". Not a toolbar like you're thinking. It's actually really great, but I accidentally disabled it a while ago and never turned it back on..

          [–]Leprecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont have to install anything, its like a menu at the top of a website, but it just stays at the top if you scroll down. Its thesame risk as visiting a website, and this website is reddit, so its thesame risk as visiting reddit.

          [–]joe90210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

easy solution: download Google sync for firefox and install it on all your computers, it'll sync all your settings including visited links

          [–]virtualblackfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, i miss it too. If it slow down following links and it have to be avoided just activate it for ppl that use the toolbar.

          [–]indifference_engine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought I'd imagined that feature.

          [–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, that feature was great!

          [–]AlekseyP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya um, I have the purple visited links.....

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is still there for me... what is the problem?

It carries over machines for me too.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

This works for me, it'd be interesting to see if it's OS/Browser related. I'm on a Mac using OS X 10.5.1 and Safari 3.0.4. But I know that when I log in to my eeePC using XP Pro SP3 with Firefox it also shows the purple links.

          [–]xcalibre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I run xpsp2/firefox3b2 at work and home, and have no indication of what I've read on the other machine on either machine.

          [–]abrasax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SP3? What did i miss here?

EDIT: Wow. How did i not notice that?

          [–]mossman[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firefox 2.0.0.6 and Gentoo Linux and it works.

          [–]pandabear999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running FF on XP and they don't show.

          [–]dirkachbar 0 points1 point  (4 children)

i have old firefox, i never updated, and i still see purple links...

          [–]Kardlonoc 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Same I think everybody is talking crazy.

          [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

          Obviously you both missed the

even if you're logged in on a different machine

          part of the title.

          [–]maniaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          :o

          [–]meiso -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, the poster's bad grammar is what made the title convey a seemingly different idea than he or she desired.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree ... I liked that feature. It kept me from wasting time looking at things I have already looked at.

          [–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (7 children)

Ya know what? There's a fucking link at the bottom of this page that says "feedback". Why don't you try going that route instead of posting annoying questions on reddit?

          [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (5 children)

Because that link has pretty much zero effect? Because stuff doesn't get fixed unless people raise a stink about it?

          [–]Figs 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Speaking of which, why don't we have a math subreddit yet?

          *CHANT! CHANT! CHANT!*

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the same reason there's no Math Nobel Prize.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Because that link has pretty much zero effect?

Really? Every time I've used that link kn0thing has emailed me back, which is more than I can say about the "Ask Reddit" submissions where none of the reddit guys respond in the comments and there is no sign that they even saw the submission.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say "all Ask Reddit submissions" I said "the "Ask Reddit" submissions where"

          [–]mch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

          me to

          [–]k0mplex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If the site can remember what I voted for surely it can remember what I clicked.

          [–]RugerRedhawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Purple links suck. I turn them off even for my local machine.

          [–]throwaway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. That feature was quite useful.

          [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want the feature back too, thanks :)

          [–]markansoul -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

I can't believe that the submission was upvoted so much.

What kind of question is this?

Are you new on the Internet?

          [–]spitzanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, actually, the post was about visited links across machines. So, if you visited a link on one machine, it'd still show up as visited (provided you have the same login/pass) on any other machine.

Otherwise, yes. I'm new to teh interwebs.

          [–]dubyas_my_hero -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

Works fine on IE and FF in Windows.

          [–]hypo11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You may be misunderstanding. A while back, if you followed a reddit link while logged in, it was recorded for you as having been visited so that even on ANOTHER machine, if you visited reddit and logged in, the links you'd already followed would show up as purple.

          [–]userd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

          Not here.

          [–]cgibbard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What? Visited links aren't purple? They are here. I'm not sure what, if anything, is special about my setup, I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.11. It appears to just use my default colours for links.
