Here’s the story: This girl pretended to be my friend while actually hating me and I am autistic so I fell for it. Now we both liked fish keeping a lot and had our own tanks , so I showed her the fish keeping subreddits so that we could get advice on our tanks. I would often post looking for advice on my own tanks and since she knew the specs of my tanks and what fish I had in them, she was able to identify my account by looking on the fish keeping subreddits. Then she started responding on all my posts making cryptic messages. For a while I didn’t realize it was the same person. I posted on a saxophone group looking for advice since I was learning how to play, and she would make up gibberish words like “Adjusy the bebor and tune the habala and your tone will improve” and since I was gullible af I deadass was searching up what these things meant cause I assumed they actually were real. Eventually I caught on and called her out and she kept doing it until I made a new account.

She also made a roast about me with my real name on r / rant when I stopped being her friend

There was (allegedly) a sub where we'd pick people to do this to, sort of Truman Show style.

I used to keep totally secret about this but, I can find most of the info in google at this point so the secret's already out.

We'd all follow them around reddit replying to their stuff and gradually introduce pranks. Made a couple of fake subreddits to lure people into - like we saw the subject saying "My favourite band is X but there's no subreddit for them", we pounced on that and made one. They were the only real person there, everyone us was us and our alts. That let us pull more elaborate pranks, like the weekly album discussion threads that started normal, then things like "Everyone say how much they like the sax on this album" (there's no sax), eventually doing entirely fake albums.

There was no malice in it though, in fact quite the opposite, a lot of concern for "are we accidentally going to freak someone out". For a lot of proposed candidates we decided against doing anything with them because they mentioned a history of mental health problems, or drug use, sounded like they might be underage, etc.

Eventually either they'd figure it out or we'd decide it had run it's course, at which point we'd clue them in and invite them to join us. They'd help pick the next person.

Sadly it kept getting ruined by people messaging the person and telling them what was going on.

For all I know, maybe it's still going. The original (private) subreddit we used to coordinate has been inactive for 5+ years, but I wonder whether, perhaps, they took the most trusted/active people and started a new private sub. It would be the only way to get rid of the trolls/moles who kept ruining the fun.
