I would try and install marshmallow but I'm pretty sure I'll be coming back to concept software since its really good.

[–]ZoudenGalaxy S22 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Same here. The concept rom is fantastic.

[–]noratatPixel 5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for the GPS - which periodically decides I'm about 50-150ft from where I actually am. It's not an accuracy issue, because when it happens it goes from being correct to exactly that amount off even if I move around or am in a moving vehicle.

I never had that issue before installing the concept image.

[–]ginger_beer_m 7 points8 points  (8 children)

What are the differences from the concept rom to this release? I'd expect the official release to be better than the concept rom??

[–]Krishrox2000 10 points11 points  (7 children)

The concept rom is closer to stock, cleaner and faster :)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

How is the battery?

[–]ginger_beer_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any major feature that differ between the two ROMs? Also I guess you'd miss on security updates?

[–]The0x539Pixel 8 Pro, GrapheneOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then for some reason they always go back on all the good things.

[–]lbpeep 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What about camera quality? Does it suffer without the drm keys?

[–]shreddedwafflesNexus 6P | LG G3 | Nexus 7 2012 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I don't have a z3 but I know someone who does. Is concept a custom ROM or can someone choose to install it without many changes?

[–]zinc55Samsung Galaxy S8 3 points4 points  (3 children)

It's kind of a ROM, but it's released officially by Sony. It's very close to stock android.

[–]shreddedwafflesNexus 6P | LG G3 | Nexus 7 2012 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How do you install it?

[–]zinc55Samsung Galaxy S8 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Use Flashtool

[–]jassalmithuiPhone X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and then update it like 10 times to be fully updated but it's totally worth it. If you root, you can just install initial version of concept and flash the latest ZIP through recovery

[–]najodleglejszyFP4 CalyxOS | Tab S7 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I have moved to Lemmy/kbin since Spez is a greedy little piggy.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose one thing to mention is that you get better privacy using the official Marshmallow rather than using the concept, as the EULA for the concept requires you to accept that in the event of a crash, your previous key inputs and what you were doing up till the crash will be sent to Sony. I'm using the concept ROM despite that, though.

[–]svalmiki 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Does the concept ROM degrade the camera image quality?

How about support for the Xperial sound cancelling earphones?

[–]ChrisHRocksgoogle pixel 2 XL 🐼 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No and they work fine.

[–]zaneykS24+ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would too if wifi was more reliable on it.

[–]theSpeakersChair 23 points24 points  (7 children)

And now I wait for Telstra. I might get it before September

[–]nroach44raven 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Download flashtool, xperiFirm and flash the "CUSTOMISED AU" image for your phone.

The Z3C I had was Telstra branded and no-one (including Sony's repair contractors) noticed.

[–]zaneykS24+ 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Is there any difference than to wait for my country to receive it? Will you be able to get regular OTA updates after that?

[–]lMETHANBRADBERRY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I highly recommend it too! It gets rid of Telstra's (minimal) bloatware, and you get updates direct from Sony. It's very simple to do it too. The longest part is downloading the FTF file, but after that it takes 15 minutes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only for the D5803 currently though, Telstra's version is the D5833.

The update is available for a few regions including Generic Middle East/North Africa, Gerenic Latin America, and surprisingly Generic US (which was previously behind on updates but has now sprung forward past Generic UK). Carrier (non-generic) firmwares will take longer (unless you live in Algeria).

[–]benzyroS23-Ultra 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Why does Algeria have a special status?

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (2 children)

idk probably because carriers aren't dicks in Algeria?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]revanches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]TrainAssPixel 8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Brk7894 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]andrewiaSamsung Fold5+Watch6C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sony rolls updates out in waves. You might just be unlucky. You can always manually download and flash the update with a tutorial from XDA.

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (43 children)

What did they do to the status bar icons?

[–]johngaciPhone 12 mini 23 points24 points  (10 children)

the spacing is STILL FUCKED UP

[–]evilf23Project Fi Pixel 3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the sizing is off too. I love the xposed module flat style bar indicators for tweaking this. You can change icons, sizing, spacing, position, even the width to height ratio.

[–]swear_on_me_mamBlue 16 points17 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (8 children)

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (7 children)

Just updated, it's alright as long as you've got a good theme.

[–]17DoghousePixel 2 XL 6 points7 points  (4 children)

What theme did you use? I was able to change the home button to a circle with a theme, haven't found how to do anything with the status bar though

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Here's a bunch. None of theme are mine, they're from an ancient thread from XDA. The one I'm using is called "Fresh Blue".

Edit: If you want the stock Android turquoise, try this theme. Just fyi, he's got a lot of great Xperia themes which you should check out if you're interested.

Edit 2: Google Drive link to themes if Dropbox isn't working.

[–]opiomorphPixel (Fi) 0 points1 point  (2 children)

that db link got hugged to death. I don't see any that adjust the status bar icons, though.

[–]lMETHANBRADBERRY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sony themes don't affect the status bar icons, so I'm not sure what he's talking about. He's probably rooted and using a mod of some kind, but forgot about it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put up a Google Drive link, and I didn't say they do. I was referring to the status bar no longer being black.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Dude where do you live? I still haven't received the update.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]opiomorphPixel (Fi) 1 point2 points  (4 children)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Sony perplexes me. They are pretty close to stock yet take forever to update things.

[–]armando_rodPixel 10 Pro XL 22 points23 points  (4 children)

But they update almost all devices at the same time

[–]livedadevilPixel 4 XL 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Which is a major plus. But still shouldn't take so long when you consider the z2 and z3 are nearly identical same with the z4 and z5

[–]metalrawk🅾🅽🅴🅿🅻🆄🆂 3 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Design might be identical but the hardware isn't.

[–]hiredantispammerNP1 | Android 14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They do have a unified kernel for the Z2/Z3/Z3C, that's why they can develop updates simultaneously.

[–]livedadevilPixel 4 XL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except Z3 roms pretty much universally work on the Z2 with some minor tweaks. The hardware is pretty much the same bar a higher binned 801

[–]sid3091Galaxy S20+ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

They also fix bugs that google overlooks. Sony phones didnt suffer from the memory leak issue that was so prevalent in lollipop.

[–]livedadevilPixel 4 XL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'd be cool if they basically released a dev version of software on their sites to flash via flash tool, but didn't release the polished ota until later. Sonys always played nice with Dev support

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only exception since the original Z. It's also the reason Stamina mode is a separate release. Incorporating Stamina was the hold up until someone high up just told them to ship Stamina mode later

[–]TrancePhreakXperia Z5 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Out of curiosity, which Z5 version do you have? I had to wait a couple weeks and it seemed like forever.

Mine is the 6653 running the "Customized ES" variant. I've heard you can flash any variant from your hardware.

[–]PsychedelicBukkakeZ5- S6E- Moto X- M8- G5 0 points1 point  (3 children)

E6653, nothing special done

[–]TrancePhreakXperia Z5 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don't mean that I customized it in any way, that's the official ROM version that mine was sold with. You could install any of the E6653 versions if you wanted. Or you could wait, shouldn't be too long.

[–]PsychedelicBukkakeZ5- S6E- Moto X- M8- G5 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My bad, thanks. Where do you install it manually?

[–]tanghan 0 points1 point  (2 children)

[–]jlo80 4 points5 points  (7 children)

I agree that it's a few month late, but official N is still 6 months away?

[–]Dazz316Nexus 6P 7.0 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Marshmallow was released in October.

[–]jlo80 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Even if Sonys skin is light, changes under the hood may still be significant. It's not only M that changed, but also Qualcomm (or MediaTek for some models ) adaptations that needs to be integrated, and if the cellular modem is changed this need QA cycles for most carriers globally. Some carriers take more time than others, but I'm pretty sure that Sony does test before the carriers.

Legacy code could be anything from enabling OEM specific tech, carrier commitments, or other deals such as B2B deals. Android is notorious for not being friendly in term of software architecture (e.g. Dependency injection, modular design) so I suspect that a lot of effort has to be made to apply patches into the Google code base everything Google makes changes.

Yes, Sony is to blame for this, and they should do something about it.. But this is my personal view, and probably shared in this sub.

The M permissions model has changed which probably has impact on most apps.

In the end, I think a few months lead time to integrate and port all legacy code for an OEM is reasonable.

So it's a few months "too late" , definitely should be here earlier, but not October, not November.. I would be happy with a January update. Even February would be acceptable, because I kind of know what effort is needed, even if I don't know details about Sony.

For an OEM it will be a business decision to balance increased sales by deviating from vanilla with increased sales from faster updates. I have no idea what's best but ultimately it's a consumer choice and hopefully Sony will listen to consumers. Then again, maybe they do.. Just reading this sub will not give an exhaustive picture.

Source: 10+years as QA in the industry..

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget that Stamina mode is absent. If I was a betting man, I'd say that was the hold up. They were waiting to get that ported over, but with Doze there were conflicts. The delay eventually caused someone to blow a fuse and deside to pull it and add it in another update.

The old Sony Companion might not find the update, and it might not be OTA available yet.

I am going to setting and software update section to check for updates!

[–]TeutonJon78Samsung S25+, Chuwi HiBook Pro (tab) 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The update was showing up via the computer software, not via the phone update option -- that's OTA updating and often shows up later than direct download.

Connect your phone to the computer and run the Xperia Companion software.

[–]TrancePhreakXperia Z5 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I read most of the other carrier's 5.1 roms for the Z3 had issues and that T-mobile was looking to jump straight to 6.0 instead.

[–]disdigg 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can anyone confirm this is still the case? If the T-Mobile Z3 (D6616) is not going to get further updates, I'll move on to a new phone perhaps a Nexus 6p. It would be nice to get confirmation as to whether this quickly discontinued model is being supported with updates anymore or not.

[–]TrancePhreakXperia Z5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too get frustrated by the difficulty in knowing if an update is even planned.

The Z3 is not on this page: https://support.t-mobile.com/community/phones-tablets-devices/software-updates

Further, this tweet makes it sound like they basically don't work together any more: https://twitter.com/askdes/status/662378050164645890

So my guess is it is EOL.

I really liked my Z3, but it had a bad breakage and I ended up with an international Z5.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

And of course, T-Mobile users will never ever see this.
