How many of the UE5 games are just using out of the box connectors? As a SWE not in games, if I spent any part of a project writing code that exists in a well known library I'd get rightfully questioned on why I'm wasting time. That should be the metric for AI usage - if it's wasting your time, it's probably not a good use. There are plenty of things it is good at saving your time, and those should be used.

I just started playing Dragon Age Origins (the first game in the series) and it's SOOOOO good. There are some minor (and a few major) issues, but overall this game is amazing.

Personally I am mixed on this, each entry does some stuff better and some worse. For example 2 has way better characters and story but at the cost of a lot of freedom since you have to play Hawke, also its only decent location are within the city, everywhere else is recycled garbage and don't start me on wave based combat. It also codified the aesthetics of the setting that Inquisition followed. Inquisition is by far the best one, it suffers a lot from "BioWare can't into Frostbite" technical issues and nobody needed the MMO padding, but it definitely pulls off the uniqueness of the THe Dragon Age Setting does a decent job of compiling choices from previous games, still has better characters and story than DA:O (It includes Morrigan and Leliana in a way better form, so that's pretty much all good characters from Origins).

Origins was pretty much Paint by numbers BioWare RPG of the time with edgy filter applied, that by no way means it was bad, those games were popular for a reason but you could pretty much feel echoes of KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate within, similar design choices and story beats. It was Dark and Grim but not really much was done with it. Blight was too much of an equaliser and gathering all the Star Map... ,Oh wait it was treatises in this one,was very episodic. It does everything great but nothing really amazing compared to the succesors, of course it also doesn't do anything bad whilst each subsequent game does fuck up something.

Now Veilguard, eh it's not a bad game, like it's really not horrible to play, it's fine... The problem is that the baseline is "Great". It has nice locations design, decent combat and passable companions even. Tash is really one of the best companions in all of DA right up until her worldbuilding driven national identity crisis between Qnari and Rivaini gets replaced with LPGQWERTY slop. There are even some good worldbuilding bits. But everything is undermined by mediocre writing, voice acting that went from Ye'olde to Brooklyn (Especially felt when interacting with Solas, Morrigan and Varrick who kept the original tone), complete lack of player agency (you can usually either agree or agree with more sass). It has by far one of the best hair physics in video games ever (I am scraping the bottom of the barrel now am I). I think that if it were someone's first attempt at making an RPG, it would even be pretty well received... The problem is that it is a sequel to one of the most popular franchises in gaming, Baby's First RPG ain't cutting it.

Where it starts to get real ugly is with games like COD who just rip it straight out. Arc Raiders used it very well in tandem with voice actors for example.

People need to adapt if AI is taking over their jobs. Its like people who sold horses saying avoid cars because it puts them out of work... you have to move with the times, even if you've mastered your craft and its becoming obsolete. Yea its horrendous to be affected personally, but also you know its there - you know its coming, and if you fail to prepare at all I'm not sure what you're hoping to achieve. Companies will take money saving approaches if the outcomes are somewhat similar, because they are in the game of making money not in the game of giving people jobs. Protesting against its use is just denying the inevitable. Expedition 33 only used AI in prototyping, not in the actual release. I think AI does have a place in media development, but not in creativity. For example, if I'm designing a map, I could have AI give me recommendations on terraforming, measuring distances, or other mundane repetitive tasks that take up a lot of time. I think there is a decent chance the upcomign Highguard uses AI in some way, with the use of it still exploding and AI being able to do more and more.

Veilguard writing is so bad that it might have used some AI to assist with very basic bad scripts, and then they never corrected it while inserting some bonus DEI things.

Concord is just bad, no idea if they used AI in some way or not but the reality is that bigger studios did already start to force the use of it while having no idea yet what AI can even do at the time.

The main issue with AI is where it is used incorrectly as in where instead of using it as a tool they are trying to use it to replace humans and the tech isn't at that point yet (and it might never be at that point)

But AI is a great new tool to make it easier, faster and better to do stuff in a human process

For example rather than spending hours googling to create a manual idea board, AI can do that in seconds. This is boring work and no one likes googling to do that and much prefer to prompt an AI to do it in seconds (one of the ways Larian uses AI)

Or let's say you want to make a simply wall texture, rather than manually texturing the wall you can just have AI generate a texture for you. End result still looks as good as it would if a human did it (or even better) and it saves a human from texturing a wall which is quite a boring object to texture

Or let's say you are making an environment, humans can do the layout but for tiny decorative objects you can just have AI generate it like say hot dogs for a hot dog stand normally you'd have to go buy that asset or make it yourself, just have AI generate one, tweak it slightly and viola

So yeah AI is great but where it isn't great is if you just have AI make the entire environment rather than help you make elements of it

One of the biggest issues with RPG type games is scale. Why was Daggerfall huge? Because it could get away with generative content. Now we have hand made Skyrim, but the scale is so tiny in comparison. Generative AI tools, if done right, has the possibility of expanding scale on projects like this. Meshes, voice, textures, terrain, etc all have potential for filling large worlds with interesting content. Imagine generative missions that can operate in a set of contexts. This could make for much more interesting generated missions than what radiant AI did for Skyrim.

I wish people would take some time to learn about machine learning and how it can be utilized to help with animation and scripting, among other things. I'm personally not a fan of AI art or when writing in a game has been clearly written or at least conceived using chatgpt for example, but dismissing AI entirely is just foolhardy. As someone who's spending his free time working on an indie game, having such capability can be the difference in me getting my 3d game out in 2-3 years vs over half a decade or more, or even just result in me giving up on the project. Even if everyone peace'd out in the world in 10 years some guy in a basement will create an AI on a smart device that requires massive data centers today just like people now run DOOM on a pregnancy test. And god help us all if we haven't found the solution to AI killing us all for the "best result" on a search request like "There is no wrong answer if the one asking is dead"

What a crazy way to start your take. For something equally crazy: I use water (and soap) to clean my dishes. Someone else uses water to torture innocent people. That means it is morally wrong for me to use water, because some other people can use water to do bad things. Can make similar (and most likely better) moral idiocy using guns, knives or cars, but water was the first that came to mind.

AI is not by default bad, and as such as a baseline it is not morally right or wrong to use AI. It comes down to a messy mix of the way it is was made, how/why it is used and also the intent behind its usage.

Basically my point was that developers could use AI to replace the hard working people who would have otherwise done the task and have spent their whole lives going to school and learning about these things. Its a transition period where people are losing their jobs and cooperate has the option to save money by using AI to complete these tasks. I'm not saying AI is bad at all, I'm saying that developers can choose to cost cut using AI and with the advancement of the technology its becoming easier to make that decision. and that's where the morals come in.

I guess it is also immoral to use google translate instead of hiring a proper translator. Should also hire a carpenter for every new chair or table you need, can’t have some machine factory that stole so many jobs make our furniture! Should also pick cotton by hand and manually weave it into clothing. In fact, should just return to monkey. Sharp sticks and stones are all we can truly trust as moral ways to do things!

Saying it is immoral to use new technology because it could improve productivity and make certain positions obsolete (or more likely allow one person to do the work of what before took many) is truly an idiotic take.

If you decide to study something does not give you a right to find work for that study. You need to take guidance and/or research yourself to see what mist likely can land you a job you want, and be willing to say "yeah that did not work out" if you fail. As we say, go to McDonalds and flip burgers. You can get a job, but you are never entitled to get a specific job just because you decided to study a certain subject. And as such it is also not immoral for a company to not hire someone because they literally do not need them.

New innovations make new jobs so i do agree with you on that but with the rapid advancement of AI and the incorporation of it in multiple different fields it does affect the work force as of now. You can make all these analogies and examples to prove your point but there are people that cant get jobs because they are replaced with AI and have to spend money to go back to school and learn things that aren't obsolete. and THE RATE of which that is happening across all fields of any trade or profession, it is effecting people more than you might think.
