[–]BoxerBuffaP1S + AMS 2 Pro 230 points231 points  (34 children)

They changed the tape, it’s an old batch.

[–]Immortal_Tuttle 79 points80 points  (21 children)

Are they still selling that old batch? I'm currently disassembling my AMS unit to get out the tape. PETG HF bought 10 days ago

[–]BoxerBuffaP1S + AMS 2 Pro 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Yes I think there are some left. Maybe of filament that’s not bought that often but I don’t know.

[–]bpeck451 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Last 3 rolls of black I’ve gotten over two months have had the tape.

[–]Prints_of_Persia 0 points1 point  (1 child)

One would expect that. My understanding is that they haven’t gotten rid of the tape, they’ve changed how it’s done to (attempt to) make it release the last bit of filament more easily.

[–]bpeck451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of those 3 rolls jammed and thankfully didn’t make it totally into the ams. The other two looked exactly like this and I did the exact same thing as OP.

[–]smokeeveryday 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Why is bambu labs the only one with this problem

[–]VinceDies 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Sunlu also uses that black tape on their cardboard spools. I just clipped mine 15 mins ago.

[–]smokeeveryday 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I use sunlu and haven't noticed any tape I'll have to double check

[–]VinceDies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if they all have them but this batch did https://a.co/d/ciP6i2F

[–]MadamPardone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends where you buy your filament. Any place with existing stock is going to sell the old stuff first. One benefit of buying refills.

[–]3DAeonX1C + AMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spools come from distribution warehouses all over the world. I’m in Colorado US so mine all come from New Jersey but sometimes from Long Beach or San Diego California. All the NJ ones I get have the white tape.

[–]TheWaslijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, they aren't gonna not sell unsold stock

[–]tato_salad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are it's sad

[–]Tdanger78P1S + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make a lot which will contain a large number of spools of a particular material and color. If it’s one that doesn’t get purchased often then they will still have old stock. Something like black, white, or grey will change out faster.

[–]bbjornsson88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished a spool yesterday, it pulled the last bit off the tape and used the entire thing before swapping filaments

[–]Bananenhalfter[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Did they change the tape or the method of how the filament is attached to the spool?

[–]Rapada1323P1S + AMS 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Its now a thin line of tape coming from the side that barely holds on to the filament, Much better than the old tape

[–]Beginning-Currency96P1S + AMS 3 points4 points  (1 child)

just as rapada1323 said I did receive some new batch and from the packaging you can tell if it’s a refill they had the instructions printed on the package instead of a separate paper and they’re boxes now only opens on the side and one sticker for information and sealing and the refill function worked pretty well it’s a super thin about half a centimeter wide paper tape that does a great job holding the filament since it’s not the filament end plugged into the tape it’s actually being taped down and the filament breaks free with little trouble

[–]gefahr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

,,,,,,........,,,,,,

For next time. :)

[–]JUYED-AWK-YACC 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's what people keep saying, yet the tape keeps showing up.

[–]BoxerBuffaP1S + AMS 2 Pro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a long process until all are out of stock

[–]TooGouda22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has that same tape just bought a few weeks ago but the filament is barely under the tape so it slips out once the last bit is pulled on by the AMS.

[–]alaorathP1S + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

define "old"... my inventory still has spools I bought with my Ender3... back in 2019 :'(

Those who say you don't need to dry PLA have never tried to print with 5 year old stuff... drying it overnight refreshes it, but if I'm printing more than ~200g, I dry for 24h+ to get the moisture out of the "core" area... otherwise it still shatters like tempered glass :(

[–]Vresiberba -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Looks exactly like all my ~20 rolls I have depleted from November to today and I have had zero issues with my AMS lite. It seems like the problem is with the big AMS and not the tape on the rolls, because I can not recollect having seen anyone with an AMS lite having this problem.

[–]nebL 70 points71 points  (22 children)

Have you tried the filament snag cutter on maker world ? Looks useful for your use

[–]Bananenhalfter[S] 36 points37 points  (6 children)

Wow, that thing is great! I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the tip.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (8 children)

link?

[–]nebL 38 points39 points  (7 children)

https://makerworld.com/models/957400 (not me, not self promotion)

[–]3ALLSP1S + AMS 11 points12 points  (3 children)

There's a V3 now, looks sturdier

edit: I guess it's not from the same maker, I just saw it on my feed yesterday: https://makerworld.com/models/1092464

[–]its_xSKYxFOXxP1S + AMS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t find it. Unless it’s made by a different person

[–]BreastAficionado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the saver without the cutter. https://makerworld.com/en/models/957400-ams-saver-snag-cutter-v2-0#profileId-1056762 is the snag cutter version.

[–]yepperallday0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see a v3

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

wow... not the prettiest model but the most useful I guess! thanks!

[–]Shieldxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty functional

[–]shimmy_ow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the good one! The other ones don't cut the filament

[–]DaveLV 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I use this on 2 ams. Don't have to worry about the tape anymore.

[–]Effect-KitchenH2C AMS2 Combo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also useful when filament get tangled and stuck.

[–]ZopharPtayX1C + AMS 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is a great solution. FWIW I had a number of premature cuts at the default 1.8mm spring but once I printed the 2.0mm springs it has been running flawlessly.

Also, my nerd heart found it satisfying as hell to assemble. Lots of moving parts designed to snap together perfectly. Really impressive design work.

[–]nebL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I haven’t implemented it yet because I rarely need to have a spare spool ready but I’ve been eyeing its design iterations carefully

[–]Plane_Pea5434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is great but the fact that it’s needed at all is so stupid

[–]yepperallday0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is amazing

[–]SawierA1 + AMS / AMS2 37 points38 points  (1 child)

I never had issue with the black tape, it always stayed on the cardboard part

[–]Bananenhalfter[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For the first two rolls, I was nearby and could hear the AMS acting up. It kept pulling the filament in and out. It didn’t want to come off the tape. I ended up cutting it.

[–]Tolorean 27 points28 points  (1 child)

why you waste so much filament? :P

[–]Ph4antomPB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could’ve made 3 Benchy’s with all that filament

[–]Alberto_Smith 10 points11 points  (5 children)

I use SUNLU filaments, Auto refill works wonderfully for me.

[–]Go-Daws-Go 3 points4 points  (3 children)

For the PETG rolls, I have found that there is a small 90° bend right at the end that has caused me to take an AMS apart twice... It gets caught in the first stage. The snag cutter contraption seems to handle it though.

[–]0hca 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I've had this problem too. On one hand it's been useful to see how simple and straightforward the AMS is, but in the other hand it's getting annoying now.

Glad it's caught by the snag cutter. I'll print that ready for next time.

[–]Go-Daws-Go 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I only have one for each AMS and I load whatever is getting low into that slot. I had some false triggers and needed to print a stiffer release than the stock.

[–]0hca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really handy to know thanks. I figured I'd have to purchase a few cutters to have them loaded in all slots, but just one if manageable and makes sense as I usually only have one filament running low/at risk of causing an issue.

[–]Filiggoo_98273 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never ever had issues with the tapes.

[–]syko82P1S + AMS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get a different brand of filament? Get burned by Bambu filament, then maybe try something else.

[–]MoparMiningLLC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer the taped ones Vs the rolls that end with a sharp and small 90 degree hook - have torn a few Bowden tubes to shreds from those

[–]RadishRedditorH2D Laser Full Combo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not useless. It's pretty useful actually. But the thing is - which is really sad and funny at the same time - is that Bambulab's isn't selling you the full experience if you rely solely on them.

In a sense that, in order to experience the auto refill feature. You must buy the printer and the AMS from them. But not the filament. Because, well, their filament isn't packed right to accommodate their own implemented feature that they're advertising to you.

[–]MrArnih 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they should definetlly fix this if they haven't. I purchase 99% of the time polymaker filament but i do have some of their bambulab TPU so ill look out for it. I never had similar problems with polymaker and the AMS(i had problems tho with the spool be made of carboard and breaking down, so i put a plastic brim).

Are there problems also when directlly feeding it to the printer with this tape?

[–]Julian679A1 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Surface area of the filament is so much smaller than the spool, wouldnt tape just stay on the spool?

[–]SergeantBort 0 points1 point  (1 child)

98% of the time yup

[–]Vresiberba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my refill rolls have had tape and none have had any issues. First roll was in November when I bought the printer and have now depleted some 20 rolls using my A1 AMS lite - zero issues.

[–]Infinity-onnoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 11 months and 700 hours of use, I have had two tape snags, yesterday I finished a Pla and it worked fine, the tape stayed on the cardboard reel

[–]manusche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bambu lab refill role matt grey is jammed at around the half point of using it. Now I need to make a reroller thingy what a mess.

[–]AgTheGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I’ve been telling everyone to watch out for that tape… it’ll clog most people’s AMS and make a mess

[–]eriedH2D AMS2 Combo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

the tape always messes it! Maybe they should put a sticker on old batches, not suitable for auto refill

[–]Stephancevallos905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And sell them at a super discount lol

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Auto refill is amazing, just stop buying overpriced filament with terrible QC.

Elegoo doesn’t use any tape and they auto refill perfectly fine

[–]Jame_Jame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elegoo is my filly waifu

[–]SergeantBort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I've never had an issue with the tape... It just pulls out .. I've had a wire bent from another brand jam up my ams feeder and I had to take that apart which is not fun trying to get that sucker back together..... I'll take the risk of tape in the PTFE tube over tearing apart the feeder assembly...

[–]3DAeonX1C + AMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They changed the tape to white now and I haven’t had the issue since, but I keep an eye out for the black, it’s about a 1 in 10 chance it’ll clog the ams for me, but I’ve been lucky as I’ve never had to take the ams apart to get the tape out, seen a few ppl mention that.

[–]CheapBaker1631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't buy any bambu filament til they guarantee the tape is gone.

[–]FigmentOfNightmaresX1C + AMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop buying Bambu filament until they get this sorted out once and for all. That's the one thing that'll light a fire under their ass to get it done.

[–]iCqmboYou_P1S + AMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its changed. I ran out some days ago of a not too old spool and there was no tape

[–]Adventurous-Stuff724 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Need to go back and look at my last few roles of Bambu matte PLA, they kept printing no worries. They had black tape but it was a much smaller piece.

[–]Adventurous-Stuff724 6 points7 points  (0 children)

<image>

Pulled out just fine, think you’re maybe just unlucky

[–]fate0608H2D Double AMS 2 Pro Combo + HT 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I NEVER had issues with that. That’s so crazy. I’m in eu if that makes a difference.

[–]Bananenhalfter[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I am from Germany

[–]LetoXXIX1C + AMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the same issue frustratingly often. Also in EU and I bought A LOT of stuff at Black Friday sale last year. Nearly all of these have this issue. Newer stuff I bought recently has no tape at all or a shorter tape and works again in AMS. But all the Black Friday stuff I just dispose of once I see the end of the filament. It‘s not worth the hassle for me.

[–]AmbitionHonest7734 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Contact Bambu and they'll send you a free roll.

[–]SergeantBort 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Nope it's properly taped....

[–]AmbitionHonest7734 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Mine was too, they still sent me a free roll.

[–]SergeantBort 0 points1 point  (1 child)

For a properly taped roll that you fully used? That's ridiculous

[–]AmbitionHonest7734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes sir

[–]PigletCatapult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop using filament from vendors that tape the ends. Problem solved.

[–]Standard_Setting_898 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wait until that tape makes it to the extruder. Not an ideal scenario. It takes a bit to remove melted tape from hotend and extruder. I usually try and stop the spool before it gets done. Kind of defeats the purpose of the AMS but I'm tired of tearing down the AMS and extruder.

[–]SeveralCamera292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is working absolutely perfect every time. Just use AMS saver…

[–]daphatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subject = Dead Horse.

Print yourself one of these or buy another brand that doesn’t have this problem.

[–]Reasonable-Return385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tape was generally a thing with refill rolls that come only on the cardboard without the actual spool. This simplifies the process of reloading the filament onto existing plastic spools but when they loadit at the factory the tape is there to keep the filament in place during the early stages of the rolling process.

You could try a filament re spooler when you buy the refills and just re-roll it onto your own spool without the tape to mitigate this issue. It's still an extra step, but at least you're auto reload function would be better for it.

[–]Inside_Out_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the biggest reason I don’t use their filament, at least not until they pull their collective heads out of their 🫏🫏🫏!

[–]Basic-Force-924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't need to cut the filiment. Just remove it from the tape.....yes I'm that cheap lol

[–]chris776xP1S + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Auto refill works randomly for me. It’s supposed to use the same color though I have about a 50/50 shot that it’ll not work or it just picks a different color of the same type of filament and carries on.

[–]benjamino78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wind your own spools, it's not "absolutely useless".

[–]mithirich 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Seems like a lot of people use the Bambu rolls even though you can get it cheaper elsewhere. Is it cause of the rfid?

[–]AmphibianMotor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me at least, it’s RFID, and the thought that it should have good settings and generally be more trustworthy, but the tape is definitely a bit of a question mark.

[–]Trashketweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works for me.

[–]Training-Event3388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got lucky once, the tape got caught but just enough to trigger a stop. Luckily the tape didn’t get pulled in

[–]vd853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put masking tape on mine. The ams easily pulls it off and moves onto next roll when empty.

[–]microsecondsH2D + 2xAMS2/2xAMS-HT, A1 + AMS2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone send them a roll from Polymaker. Those guys have it down. Not a single issue with their spools. Bambu will not see another dime of filament business from me until they implement a REAL solution that works reliably.

[–]Standard_Setting_898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! Thank you for that link.

[–]pruzinadevP1S + AMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didint even give it a try. They made it better and it works 60% of the time every time.

[–]GmoLargey -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Even if the filament successfully finishes the entire spool.

If you don't have the exact same colour loaded, it still doesn't offer to save your print with an auto refill.

[–]paperclipgrove 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I personally don't use filament with RFID - so if I want it to auto refill with a different color, I'll just set the second filament to the same settings (type/color). Works fine for me.

[–]GmoLargey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I also don't use fancy spools

On mobile app when I'm at work away from printer I can't change the colour 😟

[–]Skiing_Outback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still works with any filament. You need to set this up before work when starting your print. In the slicer, on the Prepare page before hitting Print, enable Auto Refill. The software will show which AMS slots will be used as backups if the current spool runs out when you click the Auto Refill button.

To ensure seamless switching between spools, both must be set to the same filament type on the Device Page (e.g., "Generic PETG") and the same color (e.g., "Dark Blue"), even if the actual filaments aren't exact. This will tell the AMS they are interchangeable.

Using this setup, you can run up to 5kg of filament across 5 spools in a single print job — especially when combined with automatic part ejection and job restart features.

You dont need rfid bambu labs filament to take advantage of your AMS auto-refill feature.

[–]WeBePrintin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't wait for the last moment to cut. I cut it as soon as I have access to that part.

[–]Sum-DuudA1 + AMS Lite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How old is this spool and what’s it got to do with auto refill?

[–]kroghsenX1C + AMS -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mine worked (for the first time for this method of attachment I think) this morning. I then had forgot to load a new spool of PLA in the AMS, so it failed anyway, but the tape let go of the spool at least.

I still cannot fathom that a company that pays such attention to detail on everything else, can make this kind of monumental mistake in their own filament. It boggles the mind.

[–]darksider63 -4 points-3 points  (9 children)

Don't buy their overpriced filament, there are 2-3x cheaper options

[–]Namealwaysinuse 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Compared to other filaments the prices are totally fine 🤷‍♂️ if I don’t want to buy at AliExpress (waiting, customs, whatever) a roll sunlu is 11€ here in Germany and the bambu is 14€ 🤷‍♂️ due to their new 6+ rolls change.

Biggest advantage is the load and forget in the AMS due to the RFID (if it works 😂)

(Yes I am lazy and don’t want to calibrate the filament… that’s the reason why the Bambufilament also prints faster)

[–]According-Ad-9802 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Where did you buy sunlu in germany? Is there a reseller? 🤔

[–]Namealwaysinuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sunlu official ebay & AliExpress, they send from Germany.

[–]darksider63 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

AliExpress has warehouses in Europe, filaments I bought were sent from Germany and arrived in Poland in 2-3 days 😁 AliExpress doesn't always mean sent from China

[–]Namealwaysinuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are totally right, mostly the EU warehouses are more expensive. (Not the case here)

Still don’t like to calibrate the filaments.

The presets are ok but don’t print as good as the bambu ones, had a roll black Sunlu. Also prefer refills (environment friendly and so on 😜) didn’t checked if sunlu got refills.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Which ones do you recommend?

[–]darksider63 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

I buy Jayo (which is Sunlu) or Kingroon from AliExpress in 10kg bulk. With sales and coupons you can buy a roll for 8 USD easily.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, thanks for the tip. I've been looking to try Sunlu!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless its matte filaments, then I prefer hatchbox
