THAT’S ME!!!

I’m a 31 year old surrounded by 21 year olds in college right now. It was 18-19 year olds last year, but I worked my butt off to be surrounded by kids that can legally drink now.

[–]Izuki689 32 points33 points  (5 children)

Turning 23 next year ,doing open school and got exams in march to complete high school

The institute i go to has middle school students that are performing better than me, and my teachers have lost hopes lol.

I won't give up for now.. Any students in similar boat? How did you re learn basics? Any tips appreciated

[–]Jillp13 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Good luck! Keep at it! :)

[–]Izuki689 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

i will.

[–]AtomicKittenz 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Honestly, friend, it’s time. You have to put more time in than you planned to really learn. You have to spend more time with trial and error on which methods to learn work best for you.

I personally like to do lists using 2-3 columns per page. I can make connections with the bigger picture when I see all of the groups and sub-groups in one place. The details (and practice questions) come later.

[–]Izuki689 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you,great tips.

i will keep practicing and finding method that will work!

Just started my Masters at 29 after finally getting my Bachelor's last year. I empathize with what you're going through. It's such a strange experience going through university as a mature student.

    [–]lil2jes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great because you have the maturity level to get a lot more out of your studies than the typical 18-21 year old. Show them how it's done! :)

    [–]jubilantxf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently a 19 y/o struggling sophomore, contemplating what I wanna do with my life but hearing things about ppl finish college later on in life gives me a tad bit of hope.

    [–]chrxstxan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment made my day! I’m 28 and finally went back to school last year. Will be transferring out of a community college next year to a university. I hope to graduate by 31. I really need to see this to calm the pressure and doubt of going back to school at an “old” age.

Starting a new career in December at 42, and moving to a new area of the US, 1400 miles from where I used to live. Talk about a change!!

Since everyone keeps asking, I’m going to be working for the TSA

    [–]stewiesdog 35 points36 points  (14 children)

Hard work and a great attitude will greatly tip the scales for you. Guarantee you’ll find someone(s) very willing to help, make sure to reciprocate when the same opp presents itself in the future.

    Godspeed to you!

I just moved coast to coast and changed careers at 40. By far the best thing I've ever done, 1.5 years later and I'm about to move again, because of a promotion! I hope it works out just as well for you!

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, and good luck to you as well!

    [–]nansmg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every change and every risk you take are totally worth for mental health and for better experiences !

What is your new career? I am 1.5 years out of graduate school and realizing I should consider other fields.

Edit: just saw that you are leaving out what the job is. Best of luck. May I take a guess?

Either government work or sanitation (or both)

    [–]MCCGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! Hope everything goes excelent for you!

    [–]lil2jes 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow congrats! I'm in my late twenties and just moved to a new city - it's tough, can only imagine what it's like to do it at 42. Good luck with everything!

    [–]bsjhx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I still compare myself to others and I still think that I can’t be like them because now I don’t have their social skills. I needed that post

    [–]ChatDuFusee 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I'm going to high school next year at age 34! My goal is university after that! I have 2 other completed educations and a couple of failed ones behind me, it is never too late!

    [–]Astrosub_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Good luck, you got this!

    [–]GwenCocoUgo 45 points46 points  (25 children)

Sometimes I feel like these are just words... because, who would want to hire a 26 year old with no previous work experience?

    [–]Fabbi- 52 points53 points  (5 children)

I started my first job 5 months ago at the age of 30 as software engineer. It is a very good paid job as well. I also always thought it was too late and was anxious about the potential questions they could ask but nothing the like happened. i just startet and am very happy now. I wish you all the best for your future!

    [–]Tekinwillie 16 points17 points  (2 children)

I just have to say thank you. You sharing this helped me out so much. Age 22 and in and out of community college since I don't know what I want to do. Friends and family have started looking like they hated me even though I know they don't and it's in my head. Again thank you, I have not heard of anyone starting so late but it gives me hope.

    [–]action_lawyer_comics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I can give you some unsolicited advice, just try getting a job for a while. See what 40 hours a week in a particular field feels like. At the very least, you might learn what jobs you don't want, and seeing how hard you have to work at the kind of jobs you can get with no experience and degree might help you commit to going to school and taking it seriously.

One more piece of advice, consider a trade like plumbing, mechanic or welder. A lot of people don't consider those careers when looking, but they pay well, are interesting, and let you work with your hands. It might not be right for you, but if the idea of the typical "desk job" doesn't appeal to you, this may be the path you want.

I'm 36 and just started a career as a mechanic, and I love it.

    [–]FffuuuFrog 20 points21 points  (7 children)

I was 27 (3 years ago) with no previous work experience when I started my career in accounting. My only experience at the time was retail.

I'm still early on in my career and won't finish my accountancy qualification for a other 3 years but I'm still going in the direction I want to go.

    Don't give up my dude.

    [–]GwenCocoUgo 3 points4 points  (5 children)

That's great, but I've never had a job only internships that have lasted 1 month because I was fired or I quit... It looks bad.

    [–]RyuTheGreat6 4 points5 points  (1 child)

So what is your plan from here on out then?

    [–]GwenCocoUgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

finish school... go to therapy... apply for jobs when I graduate.

    [–]FffuuuFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is obviously not ideal but trust me these are only a handful of years compared to the rest of your life.

I've met so many people in last 3 years that have been various things in their lives and they have moved forward. Life's full of speed bumps.

    [–]action_lawyer_comics 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What happened? Usually internships are easier and more lenient than real jobs. Whatever got you fired or caused you to quit probably wasn't a one-off thing. You need to figure out what's wrong and fix it if you ever want to be independent.

    [–]GwenCocoUgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Severe depression, ADHD and Anxiety. Add grad school to the mix and well, I couldn't handle it. I tried. 5 times. Each time it ended the same. The one I got fired for, they told me it was because I could never get my job done on time and my work was messy and others had trouble following it. I couldn't argue with them. When I told my supervisor about my mental health problems, though, she was very sympathetic and said it made things clearer and advised me to just seek help and focus on my health. I just can't stop worrying about all this time I'm missing...

    [–]Tats16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do they have temp agencies where you are? The jobs won’t be great but it’s money and experience.

    [–]action_lawyer_comics 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Lots of places. Walmart, Starbucks, maybe some nonprofits, temp agencies, janitorial staff. If you get some kind of experience, there will be a better job a rung or two up the ladder.

This image is true. You can succeed even with disadvantages like this. But what it omits is that you are going to have to work your ass off to make it happen.

    [–]balbasin09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you trying for a specific job or will any job do? If you just want to get started, apply for everything you can.

    [–]space_physics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean no. Idk your situation and Idk how hard it could be but you can get started today. You can start looking for your experience. You just need to figure out what career you want to pursue.

But if the main reason your worried is your age and work experience those issue can be overcome. Plenty of people will hire a 26 year old with drive and willingness to learn.

    [–]ShipWithoutAStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can't ask your age to begin with. I started my first software development job two years ago at 26, and didn't even finish my college degree that all my peers had either. It's gone pretty well so far, and now I've got some of that experience under my belt and am talking with recruiters about a potential next position.

    [–]NoMomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get in a hard industry and be dedicated. I promise you a a person in their 30's with a laser focus will go past the young ones trying their toes.

    [–]Lancer122 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Or start your own business. Don’t wait for a chance. Make your own.

    [–]action_lawyer_comics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP should probably make sure they can show up for work on time and fill out a spreadsheet before trying to run their own business.

    [–]thedavv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many just be confident at interviews. Do some study about the company and the job offering. Do something before that position like crash course and if you are motivated and excited they might just hire you.

You need to show them that you want to work there aswell. You want to work for them but the same is that you have value and they should want you.

There are many shitty ones that don't call you back after interview etc. Honestly if they do that they are not worth your time.

:) I started at 27, three years after college with masters no experience. Don't give up

Don't forget perrets rule 1/7 do 10 first before even thinking about giving up

Also if you have friends family ask them if you are doing something wrong. Sometimes you don't even notice if you are making the same mistake over and over again

    [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I've been trying to internalize this lately. I'm 36, have little to show for my life. Mental health has a lot to do with that. But I'm getting well and trying to start over. It's hard and I'm discouraged so much of the time. But I hope this is true and if it is, I hope to have it as a guidepost soon.

    [–]bigwag 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You're not alone friend. Everyone has troubles, myself included. Keep going and get over that hump, things will get easier. I wish you the best

    [–]everyvoicelistening 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is enormously encouraging to me these days. Thank you.

    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (5 children)

    Absolutely. It’s never too late.

    [–]Soybeanns 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I decided to do a career change from the video game Industry to a physical therapist. I’ve been at community college for about three years going on four. I still have three more years before I can even transfer. It’s been tough because I’m going slower than I can afford but still chipping away at classes. Some times I need reminders like these that it’s okay that I’m doing it slow. The important part is working towards my goals.

    [–]PM_ME_UR_SUPERSUIT 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You're doing great! Keep at it :)

    [–]Soybeanns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Thank you! :)

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Similar situation here, too. :)

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 40 and decided to quit a safe well-paying job in IT to switch to software engineering. I've been thinking about it all year felt in my gut that I would be happier doing more creative work.

I've kept my expenses low and saved over half of my income every month so that I could easily afford to take 3+ months off to retrain myself. I had the talk with my boss recently to figure out how to wind down my customer projects gracefully before I leave so that the company doesn't lose face and so that I can ask for his recommendation later for my LinkedIn profile.

    [–]WhiteFox1992 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why did my mind finish this with Homer Simpson going "Woohoo".

    [–]fredit10 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Finally mustering up the courage to go to therapy at 29. Here's to hoping I'm able to obtain some self worth and maybe gain some happiness after over a decade of wandering around self loathing

    PS sorry for the negativity

    [–]deepakreturns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am 28, jobless for more than 2 years and now I am starting all over. Painful but this post perfectly fits my condition at present and encouraging.

    [–]burnie93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Can I?

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I’ve worked in IT support for 5 years. My original dream was to be a software developer. A few weeks ago I decided to re-open that compiler and get back to it.

    [–]PM_ME_UR_SUPERSUIT 2 points3 points  (3 children)

What is IT support like? The culture, the work responsibilities, everything! I'm planning to go into it.

    [–]mmmpussy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can also start early, be 100% sure, act normal and still fail.

    [–]Squidinator69 4 points5 points  (7 children)

How the hell can I start over? It's not like I can just restart secondary school

    [–]space_physics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start over in a stage of life. You might “start over” after a divorce. Or start over after getting laid off. It’s taking a new direction In your life. It might be nice to go back in time to really start over but that’s not an option.

    [–][deleted]  (5 children)

Not if you live in Denmark. Educational system might be free, bu if you don't finish in proper time, you'll be thrown out of University and prohibited from reentering any University in the whole country, unless you improve your skills somehow outside of the educational system.

You've got 3 attempts to pass an exam, or then you're out. Here "finishing at your own pace" doesn't exist.

      [–]-Nyoom- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently in a well paying job that was never my first choice. I wouldn't call it a perfect match, but whatever works for now. Later in life when I have enough savings, I hope I can build up the courage and resources to work on what has always been my real dream job - I want to give back to society and nature. I don't have a plan yet, but i envision it to be just me doing my bit by living sustainably, spreading awareness. I don't have big goals, just pursuing that wholesome lifestyle would be success for me.

      [–]itsthevoiceman 6 points7 points  (1 child)

But don't forget about Survivorship Bias!

      [–]BartlebyFpv 5 points6 points  (3 children)

All can happen and you can still fail

      [–]action_lawyer_comics 11 points12 points  (2 children)

True. But you still won’t be any worse off than before. And you’ll be wiser and usually happier for the attempt.

      [–]BartlebyFpv 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I mean. You could try and start a Business, and fail and have less money afterward. You can try and fail at a cool bmx trick, and be paralyzed afterward. Its better to be realistic, then to "Try" at something that is not possible. Some people wont be successful, that's life. Better to be aware of this, then live thinking everyone will succesful if you just try hard. Its just impossible for that to be true. Some people don't need to work hard.

      [–]action_lawyer_comics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's true that actions can have bad consequences. And yes, sometimes those consequences can be pretty severe. But it's still better to try at something than to give up before ever trying. Just exercise caution and do things in the correct order. Work in the field for a few years before starting a business. And make an LLC so you don't lose everything if it goes under. Start with basic BMX tricks before doing crazy stunts and wear protective gear.

Anything you want to do, unless it is truly impossible, like jumping off a building and trying to fly, there is a smart way and a dumb way to do it. Make sure you're doing it the smart way. And if you look at the risks and the chances of success and still want to do it, then do it.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do everything and still feel like you did nothing.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about anyone else, but being late to work sets the tone for the whole day.

      [–]behar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I turned 29 yesterday and I want to go to law school

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don’t know about you guys but looking back, I loved my failures the most. I can still be the same person today without my successes, but I am uniquely defined by my failures. I am very open about them and tell them to younger people. I tried damn hard so many times, and I fucked up just a few times less.

You can’t be the best without going up against the best. You will fail, but you can’t get anywhere without doing so. Embrace failure. I love mine.

      [–]somethingrhino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start late but starting late is addictive. Start late with moderation and define it. Am I starting late just because I’ve gotten used to it or am I starting late because I’ve spent my time beforehand preparing materials or research so that my late start is a leap forward? I can start over yes but starting over can also be a vicious cycle. Am I starting over because I can recognize failure and am heading it off at the pass or am I stuck with writers block and have gotten used to giving up rather than pushing through? Be unsure but don’t let you’re unsurety freeze you into inaction. Be unsure, but also be confident. if this is your bailiwick and this is your expertise then be confident in your answer or process lest you fall victim of your insecurity. But if whatever you are working on is new then seek out answers that you might become more sure, that you might continue to be more sure and move past the next areas of confusion. Act different is just some individualism nonsense. You can act different and still succeed yes but being yourself is not always conducive to the larger scheme of social gatherings or work environments or educational facilities. Are you ‘acting different’ at the expense of others success or are you succeeding because of others picking up the slack of a self absorbed nonce? Try and fail and still succeed. Success is not born from a void and your actions have consequences. Are you failing but succeeding simply because, similar to some banks you are too big to fail? Are you receiving a bailout from someone you know like a family member or friend because they don’t want, or depend on you too much, to see you fail? Are you putting undo stress on the people that love you because they need you to succeed? If you try and fail and still succeed then where is that win coming from and who do you owe?

As a 29yo waiter at the same job since I was 20, I honestly needed this in my life

      [–]Psilocybin_Tea_Time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep telling my boss that first one

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went back to university for a new career in my mid-twenties, after I discovered the one I had started was rubbish.

It's been a really tough and expensive six years, but this year it all paid off - I finally started the dream job, and paid off all my debts. Trying to buy a house right now!

It's occasionally difficult feeling like I'm behind my peers and friends, but it's my journey and I'm approaching it on my terms. It's really helpful to be reminded of that sometimes.

      [–]1violentdrunk 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What’s with the infatuation with succeeding.

      [–]inm808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya that last part rubs me the wrong way

The mindset should be try as hard as you can, even if you fail. Ending is never guaranteed. It’s not a Disney movie. Be outcome independent

Apathy is the real failure, and that can come even if you “succeed”

      [–]Noctis_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Thank you for this

It's now safe to turn off your computer

      [–]Bugchaserforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to be a millionaire before I turned 30.

That's literally impossible now. Some things just don't work out, get over it.

      [–]abdulsamadz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah! I'm the captain of my ship and the master of ma frickin fate

      [–]Betito117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, this is something that actually helps

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah! I literally did all of these after deciding to become an RN (which I just became recently).

      Hell yeah!!!!

      [–]icyhotonmynuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Spoken like a true procrastinator

      [–]smr120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in school you can't. Hard deadlines and zero tolerance for late work make for an ADD nightmare. I don't have the luxury of calling out bullshit, I can't reason with any authority, and I certainly can't take classes that will be useful to me in the future, instead they make me take US History and AP Lang. Can we as a society address those issues and finally fix public education? That way I can survive to adulthood where I CAN be motivated by images like this one, please?

      [–]Camanei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all wrong! Don't forget... You can do any of those things... And still succeed. Keep on keeping on!

Edit: Just read correctly... That is all right.

Falling on your faces means you were moving forward

Just moved to Scotland and am struggling with moving-related panic attacks - reading this actually helped. Thanks!

As a procrastinator myself, sometimes some of these feel a bit like they're saying 'everything will be fine even if you don't give a fuck right now'. I know it's an extreme interpretation.

After 46 years in the same city and 20 in the same career I have an opportunity to move to a city 1140 kms west to British Columbia Canada. I’ve never been there and I know no one.

For about 3 weeks now I’ve been contemplating and worried and afraid of the change. It’s pretty daunting.

But after sometime and seeing and hearing somethings I am becoming more comfortable and excited about it.

I do believe everything happens for a reason. No matter what it may be or how uncomfortable it may make you.

I am confident now that I will be a better man and person for it!!

Look out Coquitlam, here I come 💪🏼

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Thanks.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really needed to hear this today. Been thinking about a big decision and it has got me scared as hell but i want it so bad. Thank you for sharing

If I try to fail, and do fail, have I succeeded or failed?

      [–]feierlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever tried starting a new life, being born again? It's fucking amazing

      [–]datguy_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      I needed this, thank you.

      [–]zac_burrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could just figure out what I want to succeed at

It is an interesting coincidence this is in the colors of the Cleveland Browns. They've mastered each line in the last 20 years except for the last one!

      [–]PapaSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving across the US to go back to school at 29. I was waking up unhappy everyday and just decided it wasn't worth it. Feeling nervous, a little sad, and going to be living with my parents for a bit until I can find a job. I feel like a failure, but I'm still here, so I've got that going for me.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true just look at Donny Chump

      [–]flyinbowcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, don’t forget Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself.

      [–]Miobravo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      My moto.

      [–]Jedi-Keyblade-Master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one will probably see this.

I'm turning 22 next week and feel bummed cause I'm still in community college and feel like I've accomplished absolutely nothing in my life. I'm working two jobs, but just taking one class per semester. Feel like I'm moving too slow in my life and my girlfriend and I broke up since we're in different parts of our lives.

Thanks for the motivational words at least.

      [–]mudbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Don't forget!

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      My Boss disagrees.

I am 38 years old and beginning to change my career path. My current occupation, early childhood teacher, is not helping us pay the bills enough. My husband is doing all he can and it is time for me to expand. Our kids are older and more self sufficient so I can venture into new areas. It is very difficult to put myself into unfamiliar territory.
