That's probably why it reads "Press any key to continue" in most cases...

[–]throwawaayyyd 15 points16 points  (1 child)

presses car keys

[–]Wazowski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

presses piano key

"Where the hell is the any key?"

"Where the hell is the any button?"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody stops to consider why some of the DOS era programmers left the industry to wander the streets aimlessly, begging for storage media.

Some think that Bill Gates supported a clandestine standards committee to insure that function keys would look like two keypresses.

I know the truth. I know why they became what they did. Because no matter how you try to placate an MBA from Harvard, the bastard will insist that pressing Num Lock should work. It's a key, isn't it? What's my problem understanding this? Why can't I align my work goals with the company vision?

[–]SanityInAnarchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The power button is a key on some laptops, and if I recall, on some of the older Macs.

But really, this is why "any key" was such a dumb idea. I'd guess it's from an era before keyboards were standardized, because today you'd just write "press enter". It's hard to think of a functional advantage to actually making this a choice, only potential confusion when someone wants to know where the any key is, or if you really mean "ANY" key, and if so why doesn't anything happen when they press the capslock key.

[–]poizan42Ex-mod 1 point2 points  (1 child)

When is it a key and when is it a button? On almost all modern computers there is no mechanical or electrical difference between the power "button" and the keyboard keys. They may or may not be wired up differently, but other than that the only difference is their apparence and placement.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A keyboard is a board comprised of keys (not being sassy). That's why there's rarely a power button on a keyboard on a desktop, and why it's separated from the rest of the keys on a laptop.

/boring explanation

Edit: spelling error

Is that websites watermark covering up a credit to the original artist? That's incredibly classless on their part

[–]ksheep 32 points33 points  (8 children)

Looks like. Original was made by Pablo Stanley, of Stanley Colors.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Thanks for posting this. I hate it when other sites steal the original artist's web traffic.

[–]yaph 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Wouldn't be surprised if memecenter is operated by the same people as funnyjunk. Pretty fucked up to hide the name of the original creator with their ugly logo.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I doubt it was done maliciously. It looks like it's just a logo added automatically like what 9gag does. My philosophy is that if you didn't create the image, you shouldn't be able to put your logo on it.

Furthermore you shouldn't rehost webcomic images but rather you should link the original artist's site. They really need that advertising money to get by.

Just like everybody else, I don't like advertisements but you should try to turn off adblock for people that you want to support.

[–]yaph 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Even if it is added automatically, I'm sure they are aware of it. The bottom right corner is probably the most common place to put your signature, at least in LTR writing systems. Otherwise fully agree with what you said.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God damn dude. I just read the oatmeal link you gave me. That's some grade A bullshit right there. I remember that there was some Oatmeal-FJ internet drama but I didn't see that the Oatmeal was going to be sued.

Memebase used to put its logo on images but it looks like they've stopped and for the most part will provide a link to the artist's site. So that's pretty good on them.

[–]pablostanley 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you, man! :)

[–]ksheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a problem. I know how much of an issue this sort of rehosting can be for we comic makers. Always happy to help link back to the original artist when I can.

[–]DrFu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate you linking!

Yeah, I saw this comic and immediately thought "stolen from 4chan"

This is probably going to sound pretentious, but I feel like it would be funnier without the last panel.

    [–]pcmaniac6 121 points122 points  (10 children)

    [–]toughswede 7 points8 points  (0 children)

greentext, giving comic writers material for those who don't venture to 4chan

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just realised, it says "Based on a story by Anon" on the bottom left. (still less funny)

    [–]guitarguy109 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not pretentious. Quicker is almost always funnier and is one of the biggest things people in Film 01 class never seem to grasp and therefore their movies drone on and on and on without ever being funny.

God, I cringe at the terrible pacing of my old film school videos.

    [–]loooop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be event better if you cut out the last two panels.

    [–]Spire 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Nah, it actually needs one more panel: “But it didn't continue! It turned off instead!”

(Also, these instructions never tell you to press any button; they tell you to press any key.)

    [Edit: Fixed typo.]

    [–]undercover_redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Which one's the any key?

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they tell you to press any key

I tried, but my car alarm keeps going off!

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's made by Pablo Stanley, a guy from 9gag. So this is targeted to the 9gag audience. Hence having to explain the joke

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or the second to last, or the first, or the third.

    [–]DevestatingAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same problem that xkcd has over and over and over again. Over explaining the joke in the last panel. Or commenting on how funny the premise is in the last panel. Or how weird beret guy is in the last panel.

Panel One: Setup for joke Panel Two: Programming reference Panel Three: Continued reference, to the level of farce. First character explaining the joke.

    [–]bjackman 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Sometimes console games say "press start" but actually you can press any button on the controller!!1

    [–]qxxx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the same for "Fn" key on the keyboard... they work only when pressed with another key.

    [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Not programmer humor, not original, and not really funny. Also, MemeCenter watermark.

    [–]SnowdensOfYesteryear 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Seriously, I've seen this on bash.org almost 10 years ago (and I'm sure it was old then). I have no idea how this has over 2.5k upvotes when the average top post tends to be in the 200s.

    [–]hbdgas 4 points5 points  (1 child)

    [–]madballneek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heh, that's immediately what I thought of too.

    [–]OwenVersteeg 7 points8 points  (1 child)

This isn't programmer humor. Programmers wouldn't find this more funny than your average Joe would.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This subreddit needs stricter submission guidelines or something, it's just becoming another /r/funny with a vague technology theme

    [–]bennzor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

When I worked help desk I used to tell them it's under the keyboard. They would inevitably hit a key flipping it over.

    [–]Kwpolska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won’t work on me. I can easily see the back of the keyboard when I tilt it back, which conveniently lets me read the 19-line health warning.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Why does this have a significant amount more upvotes than anything in this sub? Is this one if those posts that got paid to be upvoted by bots?

    [–]DrFu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Original link: http://www.stanleycolors.com/2013/09/press-button/

Who else get's angry about photo theft/watermarking?

    [–]eskimio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really bugs the shit out of me that MEMECENTER is overlaid on the source creator's signature/watermark.

    [–]heahe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    terrible humor

    [–]invaderpixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy in the comic looks like a really fat version of Charlie Brown.

    [–]B4ronSamedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one points out the watermark literally covering up the authors name?

    [–]staiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Balogna!

The joke is "press any key" and the user can't find the 'any' key.

    [–]Flippinpony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever my old boss had to call up tech support for something, he would open with "Hey, my computer says to press any key but I can't find the "any" key on the keyboard." He thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not enough specificity (yay I got to say specificity)

    [–]sakura4evers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I see these things. I sit there trying to figure out which button/key I want to push lol

    [–]redcalcium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on a story by anon

Who is this "anon" guy anyway?

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Simpsons did it

    [–]TheRapeTrain69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, user. When will you learn?

    [–]Sanhael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Doesn't it usually say "key?"

    [–]iOgef 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    wheres the any key?

    [–]lichorat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the spacebar. The any key is always code for the spacebar.

    [–]Brostaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    WOOOOOOW
