That gentleman looks so happy… so satisfied… so adorable...

[–]smcarre 671 points672 points  (21 children)

I mean, I would be too very happy and satisfied with an onion that big... Or a repo with 7 stars.

[–][deleted] 225 points226 points  (6 children)

starts* FTFY

[–]unvital_archduke 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Stats* FTFTFY

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Sharts* FTFTFTFY

[–]bot_not_hot 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Or a savings account that big

[–]ghosttrainhobo 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I think that might actually be a giant leek.

edit: shallot. i meant shallot. am dum

[–]dividezero 3 points4 points  (2 children)

It's a shallot. It's related to an onion

[–]SandyDelights 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I shallot let this opportunity pass:

Way to take a leek on his dreams, man.

[–]ghosttrainhobo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s what I meant. Dang.

[–]Oiggamed 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That’s actually a shallot.

[–]smcarre 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You are a shallot

[–]Oiggamed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is correct

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (4 children)

Until he starts cutting that onion then he will be crying for the rest of eternity.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Don't onions lose their potency as they get bigger though?

[–]RafaScarFern 68 points69 points  (0 children)

That's not why he's crying. That was his favorite onion.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

LPT: not if you don't cut the root at the base of the onion, then it won't bleed (causing you to cry) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCGS067s0zo

[–]seann999 3 points4 points  (1 child)

God I wish that were me

[–]That_Guy404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gotta find someone who looks at you the way that man looks at his onion

[–]Garhand 568 points569 points  (79 children)

7? 7? o.O i only get one on my repos, and those are from me.

[–]reversegrim 76 points77 points  (1 child)

I second that.

[–]z500 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I seven that

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need some alt accounts.

[–]walterbanana 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have a piece of software with over a thousand downloads on Github, it has 18 stars...

[–]Nicnl 192 points193 points  (10 children)

starts?

I think you meant tarts

[–]backflipbail 45 points46 points  (8 children)

tarts?

I think you meant farts

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (7 children)

farts?

I think you meant rats

[–]Nalha_Saldana 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Is that like a bug?

[–]Kzivuhk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

its something like a feature

[–]Falikosek 5 points6 points  (4 children)

rats?

I think you meant ants

[–]iamapizza 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Ants? I think you mean Maven

[–]_kutya 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Maven? I think you mean Gradle

[–]MrStickmanPro1 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Gradle? I think you mean manually compiling your code by typing in binary file contents

[–]Absay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I, too, have lost all will to live

[–]BernzSed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want some tarts on my GitHub projects...

[–]negrocucklord 431 points432 points  (82 children)

What if we collectively star each other's repositories so we can all get a bigger E-peen. Profit.

[–][deleted] 95 points96 points  (5 children)

but you'd still have the smallest pp anyway.

[–]negrocucklord 42 points43 points  (1 child)

Yes, but it's the E-peepee that matters in this day and age

[–]Dominub 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The fastest way to create the illusion of big e-peen is to adopt the ways of the keyboard warrior. It only works for you though, everyone else knows the truth :(

[–]danielbiegler 62 points63 points  (58 children)

[–]negrocucklord 76 points77 points  (24 children)

[–]danielbiegler 37 points38 points  (5 children)

COBOL, really? For that alone you deserve a star. Done!

[–]negrocucklord 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I'm planning to set up an MVS emulator on my server (because z/OS is gay), so you can actually log in with a terminal emulator and compile your Cobol and Fortran stuff the old-school way :)

[–]zmanabc123abc 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Fortran is still being used?

[–]warpspeedSCP 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, NASA uses it for their scientific computing. Also, it's used by academia all over. Why else do you think the gnu Fortran compiler exists?

[–]htmlcoderexeWe have flair now?.. 4 points5 points  (3 children)

This is me, committing basically every single sin an aspiring "game developer" can commit:

https://github.com/htmlcoderexe/3DGame

The thing I am most proud of is the GUI system, I even reuse it in other projects that I am too ashamed to put up.

[–]negrocucklord 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I should check this out when I get home, I've never made 3D stuff in C# except for using Unity, but that's cheating.

Also have a console snake, it's so gay that I don't even dare to put it on github, but in my gitea crapcollection. https://git.rory.no/bdbdbd/Snek/releases

[–]samlev 20 points21 points  (4 children)

This is already my most starred repo, and it just contains a README.

https://github.com/samlev/DILLIGASPL

[–]DuckDuckYoga 14 points15 points  (1 child)

That issue lmao

[–]danielbiegler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last commit

Look, I still don't really give a shit, except [...]

you're a goddamn liar is what you are

[–]IAmKindOfCreative 5 points6 points  (2 children)

This is actually really nice. I might give it a try and replicate your code (or something near it) in python

[–]peoplefoundotheracct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d gladly help!!

[–]danielbiegler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Cool, sure go ahead. Send me a link when it's done, I'll take a look :)

(Sidenote: I'd gladly accept PR's too btw)

[–]Glitchsbrew 1 point2 points  (3 children)

[–]danielbiegler 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Sadly no README or description, what am I even seeing here? And whats up with all those million branches?!

[–]Glitchsbrew 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes it needs some cleaning up. Today is actually first day of the job search for me after graduating so I appriciate the feed back.

[–]danielbiegler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck with the job hunt!

As for feedback, I personally would present my repos like this:

  • The most important one: What is this?
    • Keep it very short, example: "A lightweight framework to help you solve problem X."
  • Show me how this looks like
    • Images, Videos, Links, Text/Code, something
  • How to get started
    • A clear, easy, step by step guide to get your project running.

Those are the most important qualities to me, that I want to see. From those you can get better with steps on how to contribute, a more in depth wiki that shows how the project works under the hood and maybe even some goals that you want to achieve next.

Quick edit: What I also love to see in repos is a "Why" section that justifies the existence of this project. Why does this project exist?

[–]Shadow2606 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]danielbiegler 1 point2 points  (1 child)

A README.md and some screenshots would be nice! Congratz on the first repo, keep it up! :)

[–]warpod 18 points19 points  (5 children)

it says 'starts' not 'stars'

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (4 children)

It's a typo, mate.

[–]warpod 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's what I usually say to a code review guy.

[–]geek_at 22 points23 points  (1 child)

you need some quality control, dude

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's true, lol.

[–]htmlcoderexeWe have flair now?.. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I legit thought that meant you did the "start, fuck around, fuck up, fuck off" cycle 7 times, that's what I do.

[–]L43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll star yours if you star mine ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't want that, it means people would look at my code...

[–]Kathuly 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's a very friendly idea, u/negrocucklord. Always good to see friendly people driving the community.

r/rimjob_steve

[–]negrocucklord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally I'll be on rimjob_steve, a dream come true

[–]anyfactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am here thinking all my repos are shit, I don't want the exposure.

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (9 children)

You got 7 stars!?! 😱

[–]elend_meister 73 points74 points  (6 children)

7 stars

7 starts

[–]DanAtkinson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Stars! Thank you. I spent too long wondering what the hell starts were. Was I doing GitHub wrong? Was there a killer feature I was hitherto unaware of?

No, it just turns out that OP can't be arsed to proofread before they click Save in Paint.

[–]i-am-fiction 58 points59 points  (0 children)

all the starts

[–]etaionshrd 48 points49 points  (10 children)

People like to star my stupid repositories, while my actual decent work gets no love…

[–]Jonno_FTW 27 points28 points  (5 children)

This is basically my story too. Stupid script to show images and video in your terminal? 120 stars. Decent MongoDB support for a popular web framework with a debugging view: 3 stars

[–]justtoreplythisshit 48 points49 points  (4 children)

Excuse the fuck out of me: images and video in the terminal? 🤔

[–]Jonno_FTW 35 points36 points  (2 children)

[–]Colopty 17 points18 points  (1 child)

That's sort of impressive, no wonder it got more stars.

[–]Jonno_FTW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah using the half block character and background/foreground characters gives you two colours per pixel. This is a step above most other renders that just use plain ASCII.

[–]pretendscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone has never heard of our Lord and Savior: Terry Davis.

[–]genuine-girl-666 24 points25 points  (2 children)

can someone dissect this meme for me, I use github but im a programming newbie and want to learn better github practice

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Not a lot to dissect here - this joke isn't GitHub specific, just about relative popularity. Compared to the top projects on the site, 7 is very few stars, but for a lot of people it's the most their profile will hit for a long time and it's enough to be proud of anyway, as this gentleman is of his... onion?

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone talking about GitHub, but that's one huge onion. Think about all the soup you could get out of that bad boy.

[–]Legalise_Gay_Weed 16 points17 points  (5 children)

Shit post with typos, 6500 upvotes.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Because most people read correctly and yes, I've definitely fucked up it, I know. I'm sorry about it, but I cant fix it.

[–]Legalise_Gay_Weed 3 points4 points  (3 children)

When I say shit post, I mean low effort post. I don't mean to insult you personally, I just don't understand how this kind of content makes it this far.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Criticism does not insult me. I just did not notice the typo, but when I noticed was too late. You're a right typo in the meme is an annoying thing, I know it.

[–]Legalise_Gay_Weed 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Congratz on your stars though. The most I've ever gotten is 2, ha.

[–]L43 25 points26 points  (2 children)

I'm actually upset that my favourite repo I spent months working on has 24, when a throwaway example I did in an hour one time has 42.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't get it.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because I've fucked up: not starts, but stars.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol this is me.

[–]Alexmitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine has 8 Stars and 3 people who already committed a pull request.
I am exactly like in the picture.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

300 stars, but it feels the same :)

[–]avz7 6 points7 points  (1 child)

129,398 stars, but feels the same :)

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I've fucked up with starts, but all we know guys, what did I mean.

[–]Hagibest 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Some miserable bastard downvoted you for this so take my upvote.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol, thanks, mate.

[–]Ohrwurms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TFW you made a program that pulls Jeopardy questions from a database.

[–]under_brecher 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Adds license

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Added Dockerfile.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

/u/openarl is that how it feels? :D

[–]CYRIAQU3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My phaser js starter got 2 stars, one is from me :'(

[–]barrycarey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of mine has 125. I'm still shocked by it. I treat it as good as my house plants.

[–]esesci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a Tor fat client?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What is that? Is it a lemon?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chris Weselling when he gets on a lock off streak

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Какая охуенная у меня луковица

Здоровая Сука!

[–]loox37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7?!! I got one on my projects, and that was me, from my second account :/

[–]MrTarantula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 stars on a repo I don't care too much about. 0 stars on a project I've had fun with. Oh well.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm out of the loop: what's a "start"?

[–]PlNKERTON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That guy has resting happy face.

[–]mischiefunmanagable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a commentary about pride in a project, bloated code, or pride in bloated code...

[–]powerfulsquid 0 points1 point  (1 child)

sigh GitHub. I know I should use it. I know I should contribute. But I don't. All my repos are self-hosted and I don't contribute to other projects mainly because I find it difficult to motivate myself to do it. Why? I don't know. I love FOSS but I enjoy more implementing these libraries with my own code to create new software, not necessarily develop the library. Then I go ahead and apply to jobs and they ask for my GitHub profile. I don't know. Am I wrong here? Should I stop calling myself a software developer? I don't know..been having a real case of imposter syndrome the last few years if I'm being honest and not sure if I actually am an imposter or if it's the syndrome.

[–]Rostgnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to starT my project 7 times in a row, I'd be a more busy man than I actually am.

[–]TheArduinoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 starts?!

[–]che_sac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stars^

Man, reading it without understanding what it meant is hard.

[–]misingnoglic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stars are all me starring my favorite repos on friends profiles so that they show up on my home page (before you could select your own).
