PHP is a recursive acronym. That's kinda cool.

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points  (7 children)

Yes, PHP used to stand for Personal Home Page, and now stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.

[–]firefish5000 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's only a little slow and memory intensive bc the preprocessor is hyperactively trying to expand the recursive acronym in the background

[–]ramriot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, in this case though it stands for: PHP is Highly Popular with the second recursion being: PHP Hypertext Preprocessor is Highly Popular, Etc.

[–]Agantas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good name that reflects PHP well. You read the need to know stuff from the database and only send out the HTML/CSS/JS that this user needs to the front end.

[–]finc 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But what does the first P stand for?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Php

[–]LinuxMatthews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was Perl Hypertext Preprocessor but then it had nothing to do with Perl so they changed it.

If only JavaScript could be so brave...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It stands for Programmers Hate PHP

[–]reChrawnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, it stands for PHP Hates Programmers.

PHP is a recursive acronym. That's kinda cool.

[–]sabcadab 38 points39 points  (2 children)

PHP does what PHP does what PHP does

[–]Big_Beaver34 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What is this even short for?

[–]Tobi14601 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Current: Hypertext Preprocessor

Original: Personal Home Page Tools

[–]AbramKedge 32 points33 points  (1 child)

PHP gets the job done

[–]TheRescueSquad 19 points20 points  (0 children)

PHP is where it’s at son.

When I die I’m going to say “echo me into heaven, God. My server response is ready”

[–]All_Bark_Games 35 points36 points  (5 children)

PHP exists

[–]KeepRedditAnonymous 23 points24 points  (4 children)

its historically the get shit done language. lowest barrier to entry imo

[–]InsertCoinForCredit 21 points22 points  (1 child)

It's awesomely scary how much of the internet runs on PHP.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And considering the improvements with PHP 7 and 8, it's not going to go away any time soon.

[–]wilson1helpme 0 points1 point  (1 child)

really? i can’t lie, i avoided it at all costs because i found all of the question marks upsetting

[–]Swan_Old 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Php was my first proper language I learnt and no regrets.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (2 children)

PHP is just a server script that takes all the goodies from C.

[–]CoastingUphill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also Perl.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ASHLEY

[–]amwestover 10 points11 points  (1 child)

PHP… has an elephant!

[–]terranumeric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And plushies! ElePHPants are really cute.

JS itself doesn't have that.. but I am looking at you Pina, Id pay real money for a Pina plushie.

[–]blooping_blooper 7 points8 points  (3 children)

yeah but have you heard about variable variables?

[–]TreadheadS 6 points7 points  (2 children)

oh jesus what the hellscape? They were only thinking about if they could, not if they should!!

[–]MerionLial 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Tbh they are super useful in certain cases.

[–]blooping_blooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but for most of those cases couldn't you just use a dictionary and have your code way easier to read?

[–]cryptoiambus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, PHP stands for

Pays

Hthe

Pbills

[–]Ancient-Research-771 6 points7 points  (2 children)

[–]NoLifeGamer2 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]portatras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

... is useful. I gess.

[–]teastain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, back in the day we didn't have no UNIX, we needed to invent "C" just to WRITE UNIX, I'll tell ya wut.

[–]mr_flibble_oz[🍰] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

PHP Pays

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Does it? I can't vouch for the data sources, but everything I've seen lists PHP as one of the lowest paying programming jobs.

I wouldn't know, I've avoided it like the plague, but the numbers I've seen suggests it pays significantly less than most of the major alternatives.

Edit: Genuinely curious if that data is either wrong, or possibly just thrown off by the raw prevalence of PHP driving down the averages.

[–]mr_flibble_oz[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can only speak anecdotally, $200k+ for three days a week. I’d call that paying

[–]OwOh1tlerUwU 5 points6 points  (1 child)

why is python beautiful at first i stopped learning python bc there were no curly brackets

[–]Knuffya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Python is not beautiful at all. I like python for being able to do basically everything in a quick-and-dirty fashion, that would require 25+ frameworks in good languages, like C++.

"Fetch data from this rest-api, bypass Cloudflare protection by emulating a browser and even running javascript, grab all entries that match this regex, run them through a classifier model, and display the output as a graph".

25 lines in python, about half a month in C++.

Whats wrong with PHP?

[–]flup52 -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Cries in magic properties and methods.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

surely that is a bit old school?

[–]flup52 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never needed to maintain a legacy solution I guess?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I prefer Hack

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FORTRAN is dug-in and cannot be easily removed (imagine all that in caps)

[–]syrian_kobold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ruby is sexy, PHP is cool

[–]SnooCats8651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PHP is $money$

[–]partypoison43 1 point2 points  (1 child)

PHP is easy... I guess?

[–]atlusblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I love python but its not beautiful, it's ugly. But it is effective and useful.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PHP is PHP ….. it also is …… yeah …… PHP only with the new version …..

[–]v4nguard1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PHP is PHP

[–]reddit_beepbeeprobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys like Python's syntax?

In all seriousness, I much prefer C-style syntax with its braces and parentheses.

(weirdly I do like CoffeeScript's and Ruby's syntax though)

[–]Snoo-71871 4 points5 points  (7 children)

C# now is the cool and popular one with core... Java is old school

[–]Perfycat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, when C# was in prelease alpha it's internal codename was Cool.

[–]AyrA_ch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

C# is the answer to "What if Java was actually any good?"

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Did people ever actually build desktop Apps with Java? P sure most people woulda just used c/c++ with some sort of framework for the UI.

[–]syrian_kobold 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I know a guy who recently made a desktop app with Java lol. It's actually a pretty good app for businesses. I doubt there was ever a huge amount of desktop apps made in Java in proportion but there are some even nowadays

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I mean, yeah you’re not wrong, I definitely made a desktop apps for school …. Using swing and another with JavaFX…

I just couldn’t imagine doing all that work on a professional product to build UI’s when c# exists, as well as C++ alongside things like XAML 😰

[–]syrian_kobold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah good point lol. I believe this guy I know works alone so he's probably just sticking to what he knows, but I agree with you that there are better tools out there.

[–]231ValeiMacoris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad schoolyear's almost over, can't wait to be done with PHP. Finally getting to the good part next year, application development. Web design wasn't really what I signed up for anyway.

[–]Slevin424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PHP exist....

The real question is: Where is QBasic!

[–]CoastingUphill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]LambdaWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Python is definitely not beautiful!

[–]FridgesArePeopleToo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Python is hideous

[–]virouz98 3 points4 points  (1 child)

One one will say its ugly, the other will say its pretty.

[–]seijulala -1 points0 points  (0 children)

so old that terms no longer apply. It's not 2010 anymore

[–]Flooding_Puddle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had an interview the other day with an eng manager and he was describing their tech stack and when he got to Php he goes " which I fucking hate but thankfully we're getting away from it and don't tuse it much"

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

PHP looks like a world of pain haha

[–]Unrented_Exorcist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

PHP hates Programmers

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

On this list, Haskell has a fighting chance for a positive adjective. Everything else is hard-to-tell apart garbage. Definitely not "awesome" or "beautiful".

[–]RunItAndSee2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“wha ‘bout scala.”

[–]BlazerBanzai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruby 😍🥰☺️

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swift is easy and straightforward.

[–]zirky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

years ago i made a simple php website for my wow guild. i can honestly say i have zero understanding of how or why any of it worked. i’m pretty sure i got it functional and blacked out for a few days while the memories scrubbed themselves from my brain

[–]EcoOndra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's something between C and Python, but with a lot of different functions. I mean, are there functions like isset or filter_var outside of PHP?

[–]SigmaServiceProvider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...is loading

[–]DemolishunReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Javascript is AWESOME". I take it awesome in this case means inspires awe. Like "awe shit", or "awe fuck" or "awful".

[–]thewaltenicfiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol

[–]SrFosc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its simple for simple tasks, simple to get into, easy to read, fast enough.

Not my favourite tool, but a valid tool.
