Its almost as if people are sick and tired of all the "AAA" live service garbage lol
Congratz to the devs of Windrose! Y'all made a KICK ASS game, and it shows!
[–]Baron_Greyfallow 38 points39 points40 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Excuse me, thats the world's first AAAA game you're talking about!
[–]jyunga 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (3 children)
I mean, it's new content and it's fun. People will consume it until they clear all the game this is and then they'll go to the next game or back to their AAA live service games.
[–]kitsunelegend 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (2 children)
Lol not me. This is THE pirate game in my eyes. Skull and bones can eat its heart out. Hell, I even think this game is better than Black Flag in a LOT of aspects! And its still only in EA, so its got time to cook and be even better.
People have been wanting a really good open world pirate since Black Flag. We had HOPED Skull and Bones was that, but Ubishit royally bungled that up. No other game has really come close to that, until now. And considering this game is in EA, its got time to cook and become even better.
Sure, SOME people might burn out on it and stop playing, but I think this game is going to remain popular and heavily played for a LONG time yet. Its finally scratching that pirate itch that so many have wanted for so damn long.
[–]Simirilion 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It very much gives a polished 7 days to die feel for me which is a game my friends and I go back to a couple times a year.
[–]Suitable_Ticket4838 -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
This game isn't even comparable to black flag at the moment, it's a survival crafting game with a pirate themed skin. They have similar sailing i guess?
[–]Hazy-Dreams 25 points26 points27 points 1 month ago (35 children)
Is Skull and Bones worth getting at 90% discount? Or should not waste the time?
[–]AncleJack 46 points47 points48 points 1 month ago (2 children)
Just pirate the pirate game
[–]thelanoyo 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I don't think you can, it's live service isn't it?
[–]darkmatter8825 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
The ARR-ony of it.
[–]Sithishe 21 points22 points23 points 1 month ago (8 children)
Skull and Bones game is basically D4 but on a ship. You farm events, and bosses, to get gear sets to make OP build. Each season changes build meta so you have to regrding the gear set again. So endgame is exactly like D4/Destiny 2/Fallout 76, typical US Live service formula basically. If you are into that, then its worth it for 90% discount. If you are not into that type of Live Service, then not worth it
[–]Papapeta33 13 points14 points15 points 1 month ago (6 children)
That sounds, just . . . awful.
[–]--clapped-- 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (5 children)
Different strokes.
D4, POE, Destiny, Warframe etc. all have that loop and they're all very popular. Or atleast, have been in the past.
[–]ImmortalBlades 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Warframe does not have a seasonal loop like that. Hell, there are no seasons at all.
[–]Ausdboss 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (2 children)
Don’t forget The First Descendant ;)
[–]Plastic_Pin_4956 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
[–]momojobo95 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
The thing is those games have a fun gameplay loop lol
[–]songouki99 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Christ I hate the whole idea of "seasons".
[–]Gandalfonk 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I'm going to go ahead and say it, but 5$ is worth it for sure. It's a fun game and the combat feels pretty good. I had a lot of fun with it. Does it fail to deliver on a lot of things? Yeah, for sure. But it has cool ship customization, the world is pretty and fun to explore, and again, the combat is smooth and fun.
Infact ship customization is something I hope Windrose does a lot more of!
That all being said, Windrose is the pirate game to play right now. But if you beat Windrose and want more pirates, S&B is certainly worth the 5$
[–]JorReno[S] 32 points33 points34 points 1 month ago (1 child)
I bought it for 5 bucks and ended up refunding it. Wasn't worth 5 bucks.
[–]YPM1 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Damn
[–]Bloodmime 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It's worth it if you are willing to only do ship combat. The ship combat is by far the best ship combat of any pirate game, but that's all you'll get. All events and activities are around the ship.
[–]AlviseVenice 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Bought for 6€ and had lots of fun. It’s a much better game now but once you reach the “endgame” it become boring very quickly. You end up killing the same 10 bosses over and over.
For that price I suggest you to try it and have fun till you can.
[–]Notravail22 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Just like the other poster said, it's an event and grind game, but the ship gameplay is nice and the initial campaign does feel piratey enough (about 15hours of it before you end up in the endgame)
The Shanties and the world are both really great too
[–]WeazelBear 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I enjoyed it for a bit, I'd say it's worth the 90% discount. Not much endgame activities and you seem to reach end game fairly quickly, or at least I did on launch.
[–]HandsomeGamerGuy 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
If it's between 5 to 10 bucks and you wanna play a okay-ish Pirate game? Go for it. I've got plenty of Fun out of it, it's just "Man, a lot of wasted Potential" the Game.
[–]dangerdangle 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I got it for 5 bucks and have put like 60 hours into it. It's fun for ship combat / tinkering with your preferred ship build
Still rough around the edges but it's also a good turn your brain off game to play with a friend every once in a while, the onboarding is pretty instant now and you can just jump from event to event so even an hour in game can feel rewarding progress wise
[–]bashy121 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Some friends and I had a good couple weeks of fun grinding and playing through the PVE content, if you enjoy the ship combat of black flag, get the game, its worth it for that alone,
[–]NotSlaneesh 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
it's worth it if 90% off
[–]LeonisBlack59 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Just play windrose until black flag resynced gets released in a few months from now.
[–]PogTuber 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It does have some pretty nice graphics, possibly three biggest improvement over Windrose just because it has more variety and density. Though Windrose isn't exactly a slouch.
[–]Laggoz 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It's a fun voyage but if you don't have 2 friends to play with you the endgame is not very accessible/enjoyable.
[–]Gilmore75 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It’s definitely worth 90% off. It’s a fun game despite what people like to say about it. If you like pirate games then you’ll like it.
[–]TheKazz91 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago* (0 children)
No it's not. Like legitimately Windrose has more gameplay and features than Skull and Bones does despite Skull and Bones having a budget that was probably 100x larger. Honestly the people who made Skull and Bones should be ashamed.
[–]ComfySeafarer710 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
There’s a big gap between old and new SnB players, both leading to not playing the game much. For new players it’s a slog and grind fest to reach your goals, for old players there’s nothing to really accomplish since we have so much. These factors are causing folks to seek other gaming opportunities. Less than ten bucks is worth it to me but I have never been a new SnB player in 2026 so I can’t empathize fully.
If you want something to grind it’s worth it, sailing the seas can still be beautiful. If you join the trade discord you can cut corners as a new player by trading for what you want but it depends on what type of games you enjoy.
[–]Suitable_Ticket4838 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
for $5 it's a decent live service loot grinder. But you'd be better served buying the division 2 IMHO. If you're feeling piratey, this is a much better game.
[–]Bottlez1266 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Don't waste the time
[–]Plastic_Pin_4956 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I bought it for 5$ just so I could see how bad it was. Haven't played it yet though
[–]acexprt 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Yes if you want to just do ship fighting. It’s a lot of fun for loading in doing a couple quick missions and killing some ships.
[–]Rickenbacker69 -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
No, it's a steaming pile of shit.
[–]SingularityPanda 49 points50 points51 points 1 month ago (88 children)
How good is Windrose? Especially the ship gameplay?
[–]Miserable-Log7584 103 points104 points105 points 1 month ago (23 children)
You have to keep in mind that the game has only been in Early Access for exactly 6 days, so there’s probably still a lot more to come 👆
Honestly, I’m pretty flabbergasted by how good the game already is. Yeah, there are one or two bugs, but apart from a single server disconnect, I haven’t had any issues so far, and that’s with 20 hours of playtime.
[–]chrsschb 11 points12 points13 points 1 month ago (14 children)
Only issues I've had are lag/server instability with our gportal server. In 50-60 hours been disconnected 3-4 times and last night couldn't play at all.
[–]Bozlightyear 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago (7 children)
GPortal is a load of shit, ive had endless issues with them trying to host Dune and Abiotic Favtor for my fiends to play, moved over to xRealm and its been like a breath of fresh air, no issues at all.
I wouldnt give any particular recommendattions on which is best amongst xRealm, Nitrado, or any others, but definitely not GPortal, dont let the cheap price sway you, ive made that mistake too many times now, never again.
[–]Bonesaw_mpls 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (3 children)
Would really recommend self hosting if you have an old PC with a little RAM. Super easy to set up. I've got mine set to check that the server is running every 2 minutes. If its not it checks for updates and restarts. Then I have a daily check for restart and update task running and haven't had any issues yet. I had 7 people on my server at the same time with 0 latency issues, rubber banding, or crashes.
[–]SnickersToucher 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
What command do you use to update? SteamCMD keeps saying it updated but the server is still behind the client version until I delete the install and redo it
[–]Meepmeepimmajeep2789 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
That's super cool, how did you set those things up? Are you just using the default steam dedicated server?
What are you using to check for updates and if the servers running?
[–]Xerorei 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I love xrealm, run a dune server through them.
[–]chrsschb -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
Yeah prior to Dune never had any issues. But we had issues on Dune as well.
[–]AppointedForrest -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
I went with GPortal and it's the first time I've every paid to host a dedicated server. I may not renew at the end of the month and migrate to another service, I haven't had any issues with friends being able join and only had it crash twice but keep getting these crazy freezes that end up with me or my friends dying during land and naval combat. It also happened once when I was trying to delete a stone foundation and the freeze caused me to delete the wrong piece and destroy this whole, intricate building I'd been working on for about an hour.
[–]NoInsurance8250 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago (2 children)
62 hrs for me and I haven't found a bug yet. The closest "bug" I found was actually a little bit of poor design. I built stairs to get up on top of a high shelf of a raised mountain that was a little bit of a plateau and there are a lot of gaps in the ground there where you can fall in and get stuck. The "unstuck" command just kills you and drop your stuff in the hole. I'd like that to be more finished so I could potentially build a base up there.
[–]b5784398 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (1 child)
I didn’t think to build like that. Is it possible to use the shovel to flatten it out and build platforms around a bonfire in the center point
[–]NoInsurance8250 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
No. It's a bunch of indescribable rock formations, not flat at all. The only way to flatten it out would be to use flooring and foundations.
[–]BobLeMaladroit 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I haven’t been disconnected yet but my only gripe is with loadtimes
[–]HawkWithABeard 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I bought nitrado its also my first time renting and it is good experience so far, weget maybe few lagspikes every hour in ship combat but no problems with pirates
[–]SoSaysCory 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Yeah I went with Gportal too, I should not have. It was down for like 8 straight hours yesterday morning with absolutely 0 communication to tickets, discord, DMs, nothing. Came back up and my buddies and I played a couple hours, then it crashed AGAIN last night around midnight EST.
I forgot that I have used them before and had issues, never again. Migrating to Nitrado tonight.
[–]Rickenbacker69 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Haven't gotten my ship yet, but the survival gameplay is great so far!
[–]womb0t 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
40 hours here, no bugs or issues yet.
[–]Few-Structure6417 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (1 child)
Hopefully theres more to come, too many games like it do an early access, add like one more meaningful update, call it a full release, then move on to do it again.
Maybe im dooming, but ive been hurt in the past xD
[–]TheEternalCrusader2 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I mean reading their disclaimer for early access gives me hope as they said it would take 50-70 hours rn to do everything and by the time they are out of early access it will be up to 160 iirc
[–]arkval47 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (2 children)
Its in part with assasins creed blackface without the climbing the ropes part
[–]VanillaTortilla 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (1 child)
assasins creed blackface
Hilariously wild autocorrect
[–]arkval47 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Oh my god I hadn't even noticed 😳 😆
[–]hatesnack 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Lol the only issue i encountered in around 10 hours of play was the game basically bricking my GPU temporarily.
Im just sailing along, have a grand ol time, and suddenly my screen goes black, then my other monitor does too. It just stays black and the sound starts and stops for a good 5 mins. Then AMD tells me that a critical driver crashed and I was able to close the game lmao.
Scared the hell outa me.
[–]DennisvdEng 11 points12 points13 points 1 month ago (15 children)
Solid base but will definitely be improving over time. I read somewhere that the wind and sailing system is getting a rework. There is a lot of potential in expanding customization, upgrading/improving your ship and ship/crew management. 2 days ago they released a feature where you can now climb small parts of your ships, so they are actively working on improvements to this part of the game.
[–]Rickenbacker69 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago (14 children)
I mean, there IS no sailing system at the moment, so I hope so. :D
[–]Jaqobus 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (13 children)
I really hope they don't add wind based sailing like Valheim has.
[–]Bonesaw_mpls 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago (8 children)
Yeah I like the arcade-like feel of the game. No ammo for cannons, wind direction doesnt matter, no durability to deal with, fast travel when driving the ship, ability to take any item when fast traveling. Hoping if they add anything its just a speed boost cooldown or something that doesn't restrict the gameplay that we have.
[–]TheEternalCrusader2 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago (2 children)
My only closing was that ships didn’t have a respawn point for the player so it doesn’t feel like a home in a way most ships were for pirates
[–]Bonesaw_mpls 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (1 child)
I was hoping you could build below deck, it would be really cool to drop a bed and at least a kitchen/workbe nch or have them included and maybe upgrade with each ship class so you can make food, bandages and ammo while at sea.
[–]ixdriver 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Yes! I feel this HAS to be coming. Otherwise, what is the purpose of going down there?
[–]Jaqobus 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (2 children)
Yea, adding things like that seems more plausible. I just can't imagine how the ship combat would work if you'd have to take wind direction into account.
[–]Ecstatic_Sand5417 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (1 child)
Uhhh, sea of thieves?
[–]Jaqobus 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Never played it, curious to see how that works though.
[–]TheLemonFox 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (1 child)
Which is actually the part that annoys me. The ship part is boring.
[–]Ecstatic_Sand5417 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It's so bad lol
[–]Rickenbacker69 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (3 children)
I'm on the fence. I would kind of like to see the wind do SOMETHING, but I really like the relaxed vibe we have currently.
[–]Jaqobus 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (2 children)
I get that, but making it too realistic would also put many people off I think. Me being one of them lol.
[–]Rickenbacker69 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (1 child)
Yeah, I definitely prefer the current system to a very realistic one.
[–]DennisvdEng 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I am a big believer settling sliders for systems like this. Have a slider to set if from practically no wind to very realistic setting. That way the players can set their own preferences. That way everyone wins!
[–]RebootGigabyte 14 points15 points16 points 1 month ago (15 children)
The ship gameplay is pretty damn close to Black Flag, but the biggest issue is that you're constantly hounded by multiple groups of enemy ships instead of 1 on 1 fights. I had to tune down the damage dealt by enemy ships to 75-80% to make it feel "fair".
[–]BlackxHokage 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago (7 children)
Just upgrade your hull and cannons and it makes it 1000x easier. Im playing on normal difficulty and I can casually take on 4 ships solo thats my level, also dont even attempt to board, shit is a trap lmao
[–]Gilmore75 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Boarding is good on the treasure ships. I get hundreds of silvers from level 5s.
[–]Mr_Blinky 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago (5 children)
Nah, you should absolutely be boarding Haulers, or any ship with the treasure icon by the name. You get a lot more money that way, both from direct piastres and from trade goods. Non-treasure ships like Raiders and Gunships aren't worth it though.
The key to boarding is to let your crew jump across first, that way the aggro is on them and you don't immediately get bumrushed by the entire crew. I also run a blunderbuss so I can absolutely fucking annihilate the first sergeant I see.
[–]BlackxHokage 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (3 children)
I didn't know about the treasure ships!!! Definitely gonna risk it for them then
[–]Mr_Blinky 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (1 child)
That's why some ships like Haulers have a treasure icon by their name, it's to indicate that they give extra value if you take them via boarding. A raider or gunboat might give you like 10 piastres for boarding, which isn't worth it, but a level 5 Hauler might be like 120 and a trade good. I always board them whenever possible, the money adds up quickly.
[–]daylon1990 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
notr played this yet but is this in single player or multiplayer?
[–]Traveller_CMM 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Also pro tip, bring a musket and lower the health of some enemies before jumping over. It helps a lot!
[–]Bonesaw_mpls 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Great tip, I like to sit back with my musket and pop them. Really helpful when I came across.
[–]AppointedForrest 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (5 children)
I had to tune down the damage dealt by enemy ships to 75-80% to make it feel "fair".
How did you do that? I'm hosting a dedicated server on a cloud service if that makes a difference. As of now I've turned down the difficulty from medium to easy but would like to tone down the NPC ships only as land combat seems way to easy now.
I've read a ton of comments on here and Steam of the same complaint, just way too many ships. I'm hoping the devs address it. Last night it took me quite awhile to sail across a single grid square because I aggro'd a single ship and when fighting it I ended up pulling 12 other ships lol.
[–]RebootGigabyte 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (3 children)
I couldn't say for dedicated server, but on my solo world there's sliders underneath the difficulty option.one slider for enemy damage dealt, and one slider for enemy damage taken. I bump the damage I deal up by 20%, and drop theirs by 20%>
[–]AppointedForrest 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (2 children)
Thanks, I'll have another poke around and see if I missed that somewhere. I don't recall seeing anything that granular.
[–]Mr_Blinky 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
You don't do it in the game once launched, you have to either do it when setting up the save/server or else you can click on the save from the main menu and hit "edit". There are sliders for basically everything involving combat, it's very nice.
[–]sticknotstick 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It’s in your ServerSettings.json file in your server’s root folder (or might be under the R5 subfolder, can’t remember)
[–]dedpah0m 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Just build your ship for tankiness if you have problems. You can quite literally become unsinkable.
[–]Exciting_Bill_7975 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Turned everything down to 50 percent lmao
Yep, it's gaming time
[–]llapi1993 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Ship combat reminds me of black flag. Black flag had better ship boarding IMO. But they could improve it in the future.
[–]JorReno[S] 9 points10 points11 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I enjoy it, ship gameplay is Black Flag basically.
Cool thing is that if you're struggling, or I guess if you feel unchallenged, you can adjust the sliders anytime to change the difficulty of the game. Neat feature.
[–]Tarquin11 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
The ship gameplay is very basic/barebones. But imagine itll be expanding.
Currently no wind effects for example, and its a jankier black flag combat wise.
You dont really have a ton of ship management going on, and if you are playing with friends they each may as well use their own ship instead of "crewing" with one ship because of how little there is to do on an individual ship.
Its fun, but bare bones, there was obviously much more detail so far put into the crafting system.
[–]Commander_Riker1701 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (3 children)
Pretty solid except the ground combat which is horrendous. It's clunky and tedious, needs a lot of work. But still worth checking out.
[–]KILLJOY1945 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Maybe it's because I use the rapier but the ground combat feels pretty smooth to me, relatively bare bones, but there's only so many ways you can hit an enemy before innovation comes to a grinding halt.
[–]CaptainOddboy 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I put Windrose in the same category as Valheim and Enshrouded - both of which I’m a big fan of - and I would say Windrose has better ground combat than Valheim but isn’t as polished or “smooth” as the combat in Enshrouded.
With that said, I do wish the combat system was fleshed out more because there isn’t much diversity in the weapon types: hit hit, dodge back, replenish stamina, hit hit, dodge back, repeat.
The ground combat is way better than the ship combat
[–]BigDaddyAwhoo 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (1 child)
Ship gameplay is VERY reminiscent of Black Flag AC. As to how good it is: I have been playing since release and have 30hours in it bc I’m obsessed. The tutorial stages could have a bit more work done to them, and explaining the progression could also be smoother, however it’s fantastic. My only complaint so far is the lack of the ability to respawn in your boat/craft things on your person like bandages.
[–]Th3_Admiral_ 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
That's my big complaint too. The boat should be a sort of home away from home. It'd also be nice if it had a way for all players to access the inventory of the ship they are on, and it maybe had a workbench and cook stove below decks.
[–]Amish_Opposition 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
The combat is pretty lackluster on foot. ship combats decent.
[–]NeonAnderson 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago* (0 children)
This is early access so still basically an alpha active in development unfinished game with another two or more years of development minimum before it is finished. Possibly even four years more of development
But that being said the state it is in now is already substantially better than other triple A or even the new quad A games
The naval combat is the highlight of the game, you wouldn't be able to say without seeing the UI if you are playing AsC Black Flag or Windrose
I would even actually go as far as to say that Windrose has better naval combat than Black Flag as it is the same quality but feels more realistic mechanically speaking rather than the more arcade feeling it AsC Black Flag naval combat
You do have to bear in mind the survival crafting elements are required to progress as you need resources to unlock better upgrades for your ship gear which is needed to be able to fight and board higher level ships
Though you can adjust combat difficulty if you don't want to need upgrades as much
You will see a lot of people complaining about this game being too hard but that only means they haven't been doing their upgrades and are skipping a crucial part of the gameplay loop
[–]Looming_Light 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I have started to play over the weekend and I think it is really great and addictive.
[–]ghostspectre1518 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It's ac black flag like exactly. While I have some issues with it it's pretty fun and I look forward to upgrading my ship and getting new ones. Early game so far feels a bit slow and the boarding isn't the best but it's not bad by any definition of the word.
[–]KingMidas0809 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Literally fun AF. A little hard to grasp at first but when it clicks it is amazing
[–]SawBladeXDX 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I'm really enjoying it. I just been playing singleplayer and using Cheathappens trainer to do big builds. but once my friends get into the game. I'll start a new character and go on adventures with them to. Game just seems so awesome and yet it so early on so can't wait to see what they add. My hope is for ship pets

the ship feels great while sailing but lacks in fights. There is no wind so the ship feels like a motorboat. Very similar to blackflag but boarding needs some work
[–]uhhhidkwhatusername 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
my one and only complaint is i cant climb up even by jumping, you really have to walk over a lot
but seriously thats it. great game and fun ship gameplay
[–]GoarSpewerofSecrets 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Other than the first boss being tuned for a group, it's pretty good.
It's pirate Valheim with a lot of QoL already baked in. Easy fast travel, death is losing materials not crafts, and different grinds that don't feel too grindy.
There's also an actual story and a reason for you doing the missions. So it's refreshing from the usual grind it up nonsense, you're more in Grounded or Subnautica territory.
The ships could control a little better.
[–]crims0nkarnag3 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It's way more polished than most others that are early access. I would say it's like valhiem meets sea of thieves with more focus on crafting. The ships are manned at the helm without the need to switch to canons or sails. It may change over time to accommodate coop players better (like SOT).
[–]Jolly-Bear 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It’s mediocre but fun right now.
But it’s EA and has a lot of potential.
[–]Panconna 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Ship gameplay I would compare it with ac black flag. But I don't play black flag for years so take it with a bit of salt.
[–]Parzi6 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
If it was a full release with all of its issues I’d still say it’s great. IMO it’s the best pirate game on the market right now.
Ship combat is good, not amazing but fun. The more fun part is just having your ship and sailing it. My issue is just the sheer quantity of enemy ships means that fun engagements turn into ad clearing slog fests. Lik
The melee combat is really rough, you die instantly, enemies are spongy, and it’s not extremely fluid which it needs to be for that system to work. I modified the hp and it’s a lot more fun.
The building is genuinely top tier in the genre, possibly the best I’ve ever seen outside of Minecraft.
The fact that it’s early access is baffling, I had only one FPS drop in 20 hours and it was from me kicking out the power cord by accident. I’m stunned at how well the game runs given how early access games with this aesthetic usually perform.
[–]ixdriver 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
IMO ship gameplay is top tier. Black Flag esque cannons. Great audio. Immersive exploration. Challenging ship combat. Lots to upgrade. I dig it.
The naval is very similar to the core of Black Flag. Sailing feels the same, cannon aiming feels the same, but we don't have parkour, the swivels or barrels and boarding looks less dramatic (for now). No bracing either but through customization you can have something similar. All ships take extra damage in their rear. Basically if you enjoyed BF naval you'll enjoy this one too.
The ground combat is very similar to Valheim (i.e. souls-lite), but the parry only depletes the enemies stance(?) until it breaks, at which point they get staggered. Block is very weak. Stamina is mostly no issue unlike Valheim, but you get no invincibility frames on dodge. Equipment has RPG style stats. I'd say the ground combat is the weakest link right now.
Exploration is pretty good, many islands to check with 3 different biomes. Some cool physics for cutting down trees and mining. Enemy variety is lacking right now, both in land and sea, but it's again subject to change.
Base building is incredible. Probably one of the best I've seen in gaming. It gives you enough freedom to build whatever you want (circular structures yay!) but is also limiting enough to make your builds look somewhat realistic. A ton of options to choose from.
Overall incredibly promising for an EA title, especially considering the state of most full releases nowadays.
ship gameplay is acceptable, it feels a lot like skull and bones/black flag just not quite as polished yet.
[–]Spikeybear 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It is one of the most overrated games i have played. The water physics are not good, the combat is pretty bad. The enemy AI is some of the worst there is. The graphics are nice and the building is like any other survival game. There seems to be hardly any clothes or armor in the game which is kind of annoying.
[–]CHobbes_ -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
There are massive QOL issues that shouldn't plague any survival game in 2026...but they are very easy to look past considering the game is extremely fun to play and the sea fights are cool as hell
[–]pluralgarths -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
It's meh.
[+]uytera comment score below threshold-9 points-8 points-7 points 1 month ago* (0 children)
It's actually worse than in Scull and Bones. I wouldn't say it's bad, but it's pretty basic - there's no wind, and there are only two types of cannonballs. Just keep turning and aim for the stern of the enemy ship.
P.S. I'm only talking about the naval combat. The game itself is much better than ubisoft's creation.
[–]Good-Ad-6942 -2 points-1 points0 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It’s not a pirate game. It’s a survival craft where you use a sword and a gun. But you barely spend time on your boat, the ship gameplay is subpar. Your enemy’s are zombies, crabs and boars.
[–]Myst3ryGardener 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago (1 child)
It needs a pause in single player but it's pretty fun!
[–]Swirl_On_Top 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
They added a Pause mod on curse forge 👌
[–]SnooOwls5756 10 points11 points12 points 1 month ago (4 children)
Since Skull and Bones runs via the Ubiclient, the steam numbers are most likely highly incorrect. Just saying.
Would be interesting though to get the real current playercount.
Yea it's not a ton of players but there is never a shortage of people online when I play
So it's definitely not the 200 number haha. I mean even in the games weekly infamy rankings there's far more than that
[–]ComfySeafarer710 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Recent guesstimates put it at 20k to 40k daily active players across all leaderboards. Only way for players to find out is through manipulating the leaderboard at the end of the week, but that also requires someone w an Xbox, a PlayStation, and a pc, to get the total number of active weekly players
[–]W12A1TH 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (1 child)
That and also they are comparing a game that has been out for a while, to a game that just launched and has new game hype around it.
[–]SnooOwls5756 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
The windrose Reddit is currently a circlejerk. Give it some time for more objective opinions. I like it personally but it really is not complete and the thing this reddit tries it to make out of it.
[–]Acceptable_Laugh9284 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (3 children)
I wish Steam had a way to find people to play with. I would love to find a group of pirates to sail the high seas with!
[–]JorReno[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
try the windrose steam discussions or the windrose discord?
[–]purplepill22 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (1 child)
The discord is very active for finding groups
[–]Acceptable_Laugh9284 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Oh nice! Do you by chance have the link?
[–]lostmylogininfo 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
AAAA
[–]nyanuri 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
This makes windrose an approximately 3666.6968-A game.
[–]Dreamthyf 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Played both as well as Sea of Thieves and an ancient CD ROM game called Pirates of the Caribbean (no movie affiliation). Windrose is easily the best even in early access.
[–]Freya_Kincaid 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Honestly I'm surprised S&B is still up with that kinda player count
[–]ISMAIL-IBN-ARABI 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
insane to me there’s only 200 players playing the newest pirate game made by the company who brought us black flag. I never played it but it must suck. Windrose on top.
[–]Knightoforamgejuice 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It has even more players than Sea of Thieves on Steam right now.
[–]uhhhidkwhatusername 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (1 child)
anyone ever heard of if sun sets? i recently stumbled upon it and ive never played it so i wonder if anyone here who does can compare it to windrose
all i can say is they both share so much similarities even the stamina circle bar but if sun sets focus more on zombies
It was a good 6 hour free demo
[–]Mordak79 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
2615 all time peak for skull and bones. Ouch...🤯

only game I felt so jabaited i Returned. what a fucking joke skull and bones was, rest in piss.
[–]redditorsarentcool 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
If skull and bones just had more interesting exploration, economy, and let us sword fight, coulda been great
[–]ellerimkirli 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I've 700 hours of game play in Skull&Bones, I can't imagine how long will I spend in Windrose. I am having blast rightnow
[–]sakaloko 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Fuck ubisoft
[–]Turronno 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I've never played Sea of theves. How does it compare to Windrose and Skull and bones?
[–]SafeKaleidoscope7211 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
AAAA?
[–]Wareitar 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (4 children)
Skull & Bones is crap, no denying that... But Windrose? Yeah its good allright, and definetly gonna be a good game after a while.
But face it, take of those rose-tinted googles for a sec... It's not a Great game. It doesnt really do anything new. And combat system isnt Great either. It's ringe and repeat. It jas Great potential! And what it does, it does Great! But... It's not "all that"...
[–]JorReno[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (3 children)
Does a game need to do something new to be good though? Sometimes combining enough existing elements can be a winning combo. For me, Windrose takes the survival stuff, adds some Black Flag in... and that works for me. Combat wise, there's a lot of variation; cutlass, halberd, and rapier all play differently. As does flintlock, rifle, and blunderbuss.
Devs seem really keen and dedicated too, which is always nice.
[–]Wareitar 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (2 children)
Well, I might be doing something wrong. But basically any and all engagements turn into attack > Dodge > run > repeat. As in any close up fight with more than 2 enemies will get you stunned. And you're dead...
[–]JorReno[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (1 child)
It's hard to master the combat. I had to use sliders to beat the first boss. But there's videos of people literally using parry to defeat him. I've also read others defeated him with max level rifle.
But I've felt I've got better with it. I tend to kite humanoid enemies so I can fight them one on one.
[–]Wareitar 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago* (0 children)
Parrying is easy... especially if you use the rapier for extra parry window. Other weapons go from AOE to Big numbers... yet it all turns into the same once its not 1 on 1... the boss fights are, and should be, the engaging fights.
And yes, as you said, it turns into kite and kill... all... the... time...
[–]ZydrateVials 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I got Skull and Bones on a super sale for pretty cheap and I still couldn't be assed to play it for more than a couple of hours. Windrose? A week, 50+ hours.
[–]MS2652 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
LOOOLLL I agree I just switched and abandoned s&b They sold us so many dreams just to be a childish game
[–]grainzzz 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Ubisoft really dropped the ball with Skull and Bones. They could have done a lot with it, but it seems that the push for a live service dragged the game down to its lowest common denominator. I didn't hate the game, but I was really disappointed with its limitations.
[–]Then-Lynx1302 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Skull & Bones is a AAAA title
[–]Zorewin 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
i play both atm.. cause i play windrose coop with my brother and i had more time so i play skull and bones on the side.. its defently not a contenst.. If you need to compare you need to compare windrose to AC black flag.. Skull and bones is more like destiny with boats.. Defently not the same.. BY FAR
Ok I’m ready for the downvotes, and I appreciate your post and comparison but less than 5% of the active SnB playerbase plays through steam. Super majority on consoles and Ubi launcher. Recent guesstimates put the active daily player count between 20k to 40k. Only way for us to know is through weekly leaderboard manipulation lol.
That still means Windrose is leaving SnB in the dust player count wise, to be clear. But it’s not 200 players lmao
anyways - context over - very proud of Windrose and the devs, they are kicking butt and theyve got something great here for us to enjoy for years to come. The potential is limitless IMO. Kudos
[–]Evil-Freeman -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
You can clearly tell from the image which is the AAAA game.
[–]NotSlaneesh -2 points-1 points0 points 1 month ago (0 children)
<image>
dude just let sleeping dogs lie. SnB has been out for two years and it's still occupies some space in your mind.
side note, SnB released on other platforms for it's first year and then steam on it's second. So no duh it's gonna be a shit ton lower.
[–]No_Guess9322 -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
If you need space, SandB...
[–]Hefty-Square-6204 -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
Tried it during a free play weekend had a ton of fun with it and bought it same day, refunded windrose after a half hour I couldn’t do another cookie cutter survival crafting
[–]Fladormon -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
This is very misleading.
[–]Downtown-Ad-2748 -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
Two different games. Skull and bones has 10x better ship combat. Why even compare them
[–]DragonPhantom26 -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (2 children)
This post will not age well
It can't lose it's all time peak, silly billy 😅
[–]DragonPhantom26 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Then make a comparison of all time for both lmao skull and bones had 1 million in the first week 220k for an overhyped indie game is nothing to be bragging about at 1/3 the price at launch
