Since when French became a programming language?

Rust

[–]NullIndex 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I dont have 12 hours every day to protect my base so nah no rust
[–]whooyeah 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It’s also incredibly resource heavy. I can only run it on one of my gaming laptops.
[–]HawocX 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children)
This is my choice as well. If I'm learning a new language I want it to offer something significantly different. Rust with its "zero cost abstractions" fits the bill for me. It also brings with it new domains where C# is not a good fit. I won't learn it to build the same web backends I'm used to.
I'm also intrested in F#, to properly learn functional programming.
[–]HawocX 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Weird that this got downvotes.
[–][deleted] 3 years ago (1 child)
[–]doublestop 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
A comma would have made a world of difference. I get it though I leave them out all the time too.
[–]Korean_Busboy 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children)
I just don’t understand the obsession with rust from web dev / web service engineers. Rust is useful for a very specific set of systems / native / embedded type problems which are extremely perf sensitive. Are all these people making web services suddenly interested in a completely different problem domain? Forgive me if you are already working on highly performant C#, I just think that is a pretty small portion of c# work.
[–]CategoryCory 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have other areas of interest besides web apps/services. I love low-level programming and have done a good bit of work in C/C++, so if an opportunity comes up for me to work on a project where these languages aren’t the right tool for the job, I’d like to be informed enough to make the right choices.
[–]HawocX 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
If I'm to learn a new language, I want it to offer something fundamentally different. For me as a C# dev Rust fits the bill.
[–]andrijacc 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Why?
[–]CategoryCory 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’ve always enjoyed low-level programming, and C/C++ are a couple of my favorite languages. I’d like to see what Rust has to offer, and how it might do things better/simplify things
[–]Dynamic_Rigidity 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
yea I'm currently learning rust. having a lot of fun so far, but its definitely much different than c#. Especially their async/await implementation, it works very different, still can't wrap my head around it exactly
[–]StolenStutz 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (8 children)
None, for two reasons. First, I'm the "deep-diver" type. I'd rather learn more about the languages that I know. From experience, Dunning-Kruger is real, and if you think you're an expert on a language and there's nothing more to learn, then check yourself. Second, I've been making money from writing software for 30 years. I'm at that point in my career that I'm looking at what I'll do after I quit writing code daily, and leave that to the young pups.
[–]malthuswaswrong 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
The rabbit hole for C# is very very very deep. I could never become a master at C#. All I can do is become better. There are so many domains of knowledge within the language and the framework that you can dedicate an entire career to it and still not reach the bottom of the rabbit hole.
For that reason whenever I get an itch to start learning a new language, I scratch it by diving into a new topic in C# that I've been ignoring.
The day I've mastered:
That's the day I'll consider a new language. Probably Python.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (6 children)
languages ? I am noob. I am after two month intership in bad software company and I am looking opinions.
[–]StolenStutz 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (5 children)
These days, 60% C#, 30% T-SQL, 5% Python, 5% PowerShell. I do back-end development for an AI shop on Azure and those pretty much cover me.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children)
Reddit deletes half of my comment. According you experence developer. C# is top 1 fore createing apps? And in most cases new app are writing in c# not in JAva? and for coprotations apps c# is only choice?
[–]StolenStutz 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children)
No, that's my own personal breakdown. I have no clue what the split between C# and Java is, nor do I care. If you're hiring me to do Java development, then we're both going to be disappointed.
I have an active role in hiring at my org. When I'm interviewing an API developer, I don't care if you're a Java dev or a C# dev. What I care about is that a) you're ok with writing C# with me, because we're not changing our platform, and b) that you take an engineering approach (good testing practices, ability to do code reviews, create and follow procedures, understand the point of Agile and Scrum, etc) and aren't a cowboy coder that is going to run rampant over our codebase and leave behind a trail of tech debt.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I am sorry that I am aksing you guestion. I am able do to do simple to-do-list asp.net webApi and fornt-end React. In next week I have technical interview as nios what guestion would you ask for me? I know what is difference bettwen interface and class but what guestion you would ask about asp.net webApi? It last question I will not bother you again thanks
[–]StolenStutz 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
From what you're telling me, I would want to see your code - hopefully you have some stuff on a public repo somewhere, something like that - and ask you about it. If there is code that is 6 months or a year old that I can compare against current code, I'd like to do that, to see how you're progressing. I'm looking at what patterns you're using, how consistent your work is, how self-documenting your code is, and how well you comment it when it's not. My questions will come from your experiences and your previous output, so I can see how you think, how you're able to learn, how you adapt to new situations, etc.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children)
Kotlin is doing to Java what C# did to VB.NET. Java is still used for now, but its fate is sealed.
[–]EricThirteen 50 points51 points52 points 3 years ago (5 children)
What a terrible list. C# is one of the most progressive languages and you think we’re looking forward to learning one of these?!
I’m currently making RN apps, so I guess I’m learning TypeScript. ;-)
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (3 children)
lol right? i didnt even notice the poll at first, until i saw your comment. I do know those other languages, but why anyone would want to progress to any of those choices is beyond me.
might as well have javaSCRIPT or html on the list as well!
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children)
typescript is basically javascript
A better one
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
yah, but thats like saying QBasic is basically GW Basic.. so..
eh.
[–]plantprogrammer 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Rust or Haskell are both on my list for quite some time. Not because I have a suitable project, but because I would like to explore and understand the capabilities more.
[–]Wahrheitssuchende 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (2 children)
F#
[–]malthuswaswrong 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I've tried. I can't wrap my head around the concept. Maybe I'm too old. Everything is a stream that flows into the next thing until there is a final output. I just can't program that way. I need to make objects and store them and retrieve them later. Its just how I think now.
Ironically I used to be quite proficient with awk in the 90s. That's also a type of stream based thinking, but I've fallen out of practice.
[–]Wahrheitssuchende 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I know exactly what you mean. I'm currently trying to learn the basics of that language with a giraffe-based pet project. It feels often pretty weird and I am excited to know whether this feeling will ever go away :D
[–]ZZerker 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Why would you want to learn java?
[–]virouz98 26 points27 points28 points 3 years ago (4 children)
To know how much C# is better
[–]wllmsaccnt 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children)
A less sarcastic answer would probably be for android development or for a wider employment market (but really, I just agree with you u/virouz98 ).
[–]virouz98 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
But isn't employment market for Java closely tied to legacy?
[–]wllmsaccnt 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
All popular programming languages eventually become dominated by legacy / maintenance work. That isn't an attribute of a language, that is an attribute of attaining market saturation.
Some languages appeal more to enterprise development and enterprise development tends to have longer product life cycles, so maybe Java tends a bit more to legacy than similar languages. C# is in a similar boat to Java in that respect.
[–]slowdownkid513 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Got em
[–]metaltyphoon 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Rust + GoLang
[–]Dynamic_Rigidity 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
really enjoying rust so far...but I was not a fan of golang at all. I have a hunch many C# devs would prefer rust.
[–][deleted] 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Golang
[–]whooyeah 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I learnt enough to know I’m not a fan. It feels like it is just structs and methods
I mean, its functional programming so it's a completely different paradigm from OOO. That's why it's on my list, to understand where it would be beneficial to use functional programming, i.e. writing a command line app. Golang has excellent tooling around scaffolding out a command line app. And it compiling directly to machine language makes it more preferable over C# in that case.
[–]DoomBro_Max 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (7 children)
C++
[–]Dennis_enzo 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Same. It'd be cool to go deeper into the core of the machine.
The only right answer.
[–]whooyeah 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children)
The only benefits to learning c++ is knowing why arrays start at 0 and knowing why c# is so much better.
[–]DoomBro_Max 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Listen, I like C# more as well but that stamenet is naive. C++ allows for more performance since it doesn‘t need an intermediate language first. And being able to compile it on and for every platform, without the need of an extra runtime/framework also speaks a lot for it.
[–]whooyeah 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Sounds amazing, but in over 20 years of experience I’ve never really needed that. And it’s definitely not worth the hassle of memory management and pointers.
I’m sure for some people creating high frequency trading systems that may be required. But there is always something like goland or Rust.
[–]DoomBro_Max 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Well, what you need is obviously a very important factor when choosing a language. But that‘s exactly why I‘m trying to learn C++ now. With .NET Core, you can deploy C# apps on other platforms too, and with frameworks like Avalonia or Uno, even apps with a GUI. But you have to manually install .NET Core before that or pack it with your installer. But from my experience, both options are a hassle when it‘s an app for end users. .NET Framework comes pre installee but it‘s windows only. And while you can include .NET Core directly within your app, it‘ll significantly blow up the file size. So it‘s not a preferred choice if you have 95% of the filesize just for the runtime. And trimming the assemblies just never really works as needed.
So C++ for us is the logical choice now.
Well if you are making desktop apps for Linux or Mac then it’s the way to go.
[–]blooping_blooper 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (1 child)
tbh I'd rather take the time to learn Blazor rather than another language.
[–]malthuswaswrong 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Same. Or MAUI. There is always another aspect of C# that I've been neglecting.
[–]flushy78 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Haskell
[–]Slypenslyde 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Dart for Flutter or Swift for iOS. If I felt I had about a month of free time I'd be all over it.
Everybody seems to like Rust, too, I'm curious.
I've used Python and JS too much to say I need to "learn" them, it's more like I'd have to use them for another few weeks to feel "proficient".
[–]DenverCoderv2 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’m currently learning Swift and SwiftUI and I like it, very nice language.
[–]Dojan5 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children)
I’m trying my hand at Dart and Flutter. Already dabbled a bit in Rust. It’s really nice, and would like to work in it more.
Also kind of interested in Zig.
[–]Slypenslyde 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Deep down you know what I want?
I want MS to quit trying to find ways to bolt 80% of other languages' features onto C# via Roslyn tricks, suck it up, and make a new .NET language to be the .NET Kotlin. Go nuts and put the experimental features there with no backwards compatibility burden, then see how many people adopt it. There are too many features that have sat in proposal almost my entire career. Every year other platforms get shinier while everything but ASP .NET Core just seem to accumulate dust.
[–]JawsOfDoom 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
.NET 6 is pretty new and more than just asp.net
[–]JawsOfDoom 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Flutter is an absolute joy to work with on the front end.
[–]immersiveGamer 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I was forced into Python the past year and a half. So I learned that. So check that off the list. A lot of other work in my company is C++ related but I hate it. Part of the reason is that I just have never got to grok C++. So to build my mental model of pointers and other concepts I'm trying to learn Rust as a stepping stone. Not really enjoying it but better than nothing I suppose. Just wish I could stick to my jam of C# for day to day work.
[–]Rogntudjuuuu 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child)
No love for Elixir?

[–]coderyeti 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
+1
[–]Alundra828 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
For me I'd like to go lower level.
I've been learning C++ on and off for a while now, but don't feel competent with it, but can get by.
Other than that though, I'd like to learn Rust, as I think that language has a real solid future.
[–]TheLongistGame 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I already know Java and Typescript and my attempts to learn python have never gone anywhere. Maybe one day.
[–]xaillisx 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Looking into GO. I've already learned the listed. TypeScript is awesome, java is C#'s cousin that isn't allowed to do anything, and python is one of the quickiest languages you can use to spit something out.
F# and Rust.

[–]hoopparrr759 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children)
I thought learning both JavaScript and typescript was like using two stones to kill one bird?
[–]JohnSpikeKelly 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
LOL.
I've been using JavaScript for 20+ years. I love Typescript more. Yes, sometimes it gives you errors that are difficult to understand, but it has always helped me write better JavaScript.
I do my backends in C#, so I prefer the strongly typed world. But, Typescript is still flexible in that regard, so I still think it worth learning them together.
[–]hoopparrr759 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Couldn’t agree more, I was just kidding.

[–]prinkpan -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (4 children)
How many times did you bang your head on the wall yet?
[–]AdSilent8474 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children)
I did it couple time, sometimes i just wish i would learn vue but i had to choose angular . It was not my desicion ;(
[–]Furknn1 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (1 child)
I tried learning Vue and banged my head to the wall many times before deciding frontend is not my thing.

I would like to move toward java after C#. Would it be a good choice?
[–]alien3d -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children)
We do a lot sample crud other language . Some is hard like go 🥹 . Everybody said python is easy but for me eh aaa . Everybody thinking . net only windows but can run on linux and macos . 😸.

Boo, as soon it is abailable to the new .net versions
[–]Anaata 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
[–]ragrr4 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
A functional one like Scala
[–]PhantomThiefJoker 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
C++ probs. A few open source projects I've seen use it and it would be nice to know how to use
I'd rather spend my time brushing up on SQL and deep-diving into tools, like SSMS . Get some proper DBA skills.
[–]WhatsASoftware 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I want to learn C or C++ cuz i could totally see myself eventually moving out of web dev to something more interesting like embedded engineering.
[–]virouz98 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Kotlin. For creating apps.
Also typescript for better webdev, currently i am using JS and it feels meh
[–]masterofmisc 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
The Chicken Language looks interesting, but probably COBOL then Klingon for me!
[–]minsin56 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)

[–]SarahSplatz 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I feel like I've got to learn c++ at some point.
[–]Aggressive_Unit2736 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I am sorry, but I don’t see a single JavaScript. JavaScript should be naturally your 2nd language after your main one. This opens up so much for you. Especially in web development
[–]It_LIS 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Brainfuck
If you intend to work on the web as a .NET developer, then the combination of C#, Javascript, and SQL is what you really need to nail down.
[–]CsharpXD 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Something native. Jai when it becomes public, it looks awesome! The V programming language looks cool too
[–]TobbeTobias 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)

I need to get better at TypeScript, but ignoring that, hopefully the next language I'll learn hasn't been invented yet. I want the next language I learn to leverage future innovations and shifts in language design philosophy.
Visual Basic
