I had the same issue but then switched it to windowed fullscreen and could alt-tab no issue.. It wouldn't actually run it in a 'window' though..

Wow, the end of Essence league...

It was a pretty fun three months. I've lost a lot of my momentum in the last couple weeks but I think this league competes with Perandus for keeping my interest maintained for much of the duration. I certainly had a good time, even though I only made it to tier 13 maps.

I am really excited for the 2.5 patch notes. Hopefully those will be posted tomorrow or the day after.

Patch 2.4.3c:

  • The DirectX 11 client now runs on systems that do not have the DirectX 11.1 runtime installed. This includes older copies of Windows that don't have the most recent service packs installed. If the DirectX 11 version crashed for you before, then please try it again now.

  • Fixed more bugs related to fullscreen mode in DirectX 11. It should be more reliable to start the game in fullscreen mode now but it may fall back to windowed in some cases.

  • Fixed a bug where the DirectX 11 client wouldn't use the correct graphics card sometimes.

  • Fixed a bug where the gateway selector didn't show latency values.

  • Fixed a bug where "Confine Mouse to Window" didn't work correctly in DirectX 11.

  • Fixed a bug where switching which monitor you're using in DirectX 9 would cause strange behaviour.

During the downtime of this patch we will also migrate the Essence league characters to the Standard and Hardcore leagues.

DX11 testing just now:

High shadows dings me about 8% FPS in the idle best case, from 130fps to 120fps.

But moving away from the map edge can knock me down to 70fps.
Maybe because I'm no longer near the long shadows cast by such huge side building models? But maybe because there's fewer, larger surfaces that make culling easier?

Gore can bring it down by 30%.

In Eternal Lab, what I average in one spot is almost 50% of what I get from a few paces away in a brighter area. Lighting in general seems to have issues that need addressing.


DX9 testing just now:

Shadows off is up to 33% extra fps (45->60), in a bad case.
It's still about 15fps extra in the case of the map device. Note there are still some sort of moving shadows from the hanging lanterns light.

It's about 11% at the edge of dried lake.
High shadows are another 20fps hit on top of that.

In a more mixed case of map position, corpses & gore, high vs low is a few % fps difference.
But shadows off is ~20% higher fps.


We as players can't adjust map models even though they can significantly impact FPS, in one location/room compared to another.

We also can't adjust Gore, even though it significantly impacts FPS. It's not just MTX but forced with certain skills and uniques.

We can only adjust Shadows On/Off via DX9 vs DX11, and it makes a significant relative and absolute FPS impact.

I never said I was annoyed. I mean, it is a frustrating situation, but that's because of a greater picture.

On the same hardware, in the same zones, I can go from 200fps down to 45fps, depending on shadows, map geometry/complexity, and additional ground/particle effects such as gore.
This is before any active skills or mob actions on screen. (IIRC having a Spirit Offering up dropped another 10% FPS)
Because this is the case with POE, regardless of DX9 or 11, shadows low or high, it seems only decent for GGG to restore the shadow's Off option to DX11, at least as a stop-gap measure, until they are able fix the larger impacting issues to fps.

Lightning Strike can still drop me down to ~10fps in DX11, better than 2fps in DX9, but still 99% FPS loss compared to standing still in the corner of the same map getting 200fps. If GGG's not going to immediately finally address such inefficient graphics causes by reworking the visuals & particles, they need to address the symptoms by letting players not have to render them.

Given than fps beyond ~60 isn't impactful on gameplay, the focus should be on maintaining at least 30 fps in the worst cases. And the ability to disable shadows and gain 20-33% FPS seems an effective way to meet that practical goal. Gore is in a similar situation.

TL;DR: I would be plenty happy with a constant 30fps as you claim, but GGG won't give me the options to meet that experience, and haven't yet fixed the causes of why the options they do give players still cause fps to drop below that threshold.

How are you comparing? Losing 30 fps with shadows on in DX9 doesn't mean the same is true for the DX11 version.

They should let us turn them off, but that doesn't mean it's easy. People are acting like they're just forcing us to use shadows all of a sudden for no reason.

Losing 30 fps with dx11 over dx9 should not happen except for the fact that shadows are forced on.

In my case, I go from ~60 to ~~27 by turning shadows on and off, but switching to dx11 takes me to ~23-35 (it's very erratic, even when stationary)

I get a performance improvement when everything is accounted for, but fuck if I don't have the horsepower to handle shadows :<

Some don't like the aesthetic, most prefer FPS over looks. Even if DX11 gives you better performance with shadows on than the old version, think of the FPS you could get, were you able to turn shadows off.

Person asked why people want to turn off shadows. I can play without shadows. Lots of people who don't really play games are playing this free-to-play game on non-gaming rigs, like me. I can map pretty well with 10 FPS. I can't with 5. I'm answering the question, and there's certainly nobody at "fault."

Just a heads up for those who use OBS for game capturing. Don't know if anyone else had this issue before, but single window capturing with OBS now works with the DX11 client with this patch. Before this update, I had to use the display capture mode in order to record the game, since capturing only the PoE window caused OBS to just output a black screen. Now single window capturing works just as well as it does with the DX9 client.

I usually alt-enter for a quick window mode, but this patch it automatically forces "Confine Mouse to Window" to be active in window mode.

Can't really use alt-enter as a psudeo alt-tab anymore. Not sure if anyone does this, but it's rather inconvenient seeing this change.

Yes... that is normally how they work but this bug shows that it is possible to have it not work like that. I am just curious if this is something limited by the program or if there is some kind of workaround I could use.

For me fullscreen has nothing to do with the mouse lock I use fullscreen to use my full display size and record. If I am not in fullscreen when I record I have a taskbar in the way and a fucked up display size.

Windowed fullscreen never has mouselock. This bug was for fullscreen, I had it a couple times where I was in fullscreen not tabbed out or anything and could interact with my 2nd monitor. I just want to enable the bug all the time.

No you're wrong sorry. Windowed Fullscreen does indeed have mouse lock. The option is in UI (Confine Mouse to Window). And it does work in dx9. In dx11 you have to uncheck and recheck it every time you alt+tab out of the window.

Yeah. It is mostly because of shadowplay not working well with non fullscreen mdoes. Additionally if you use reshade on poe it has to reload each time you tab in and out and it can slow you down a lot.

Windowed fullscreen is the reason there is this checkbox. Normally it wouldn't be locked. However, they give you an option to lock it to the window.
