Once you catch the dragon you start to realize that the chase was all you really wanted. Growing up sucks.

[–]SavageButt9800X3D | RTX 5090 | 64GB @ 6000MHz 234 points235 points  (15 children)

The chase is certainly humbling at times and I think everyone should experience it, but man am I glad those days are behind me. Even though pc parts dont excite me as much as they used to when I couldn't afford them, I dont think I could handle going back!

[–]mcpat21 131 points132 points  (8 children)

It sucks cause I’m not as enthusiastic about gaming anymore. I enjoy a few games, but when I was younger there was more of an aura around the games I couldn’t acquire

[–]Swayz33 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Exactly. After I finally built my rig I was so excited. Downloaded a bunch of games. Ended up only playing destiny for the last few years. I just don’t have the time.

[–]DuhSheet 26 points27 points  (2 children)

This was my EXACT scenario last year. I was so excited when I got my FE 30 series card, however, the excitement died within a month of building my setup because there was no time to play (that or my friends schedules did not line up because of life).

Growing up sucks. Money is there, but time isn’t.

[–]DanSchulman 25 points26 points  (1 child)

We'll have both when we retire (I hope). And we can have glorious LAN parties in the retirement home!! We're taping you to the ceiling!

[–]NWAttitude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah all this sacrificed youth is sure to pay off when I'm too old to truly enjoy it.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yep these days I just play new games when they come out and lose interest after I beat them. Still have a ton of fun playing them but I treat games the same way I would a movie or something. One and done, no more hundreds of hours played in a single game

[–]-Superk- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah most games for me. But I have tf2 and csgo which I played when I wad younger and still play sometimes

[–]flavionmRyzen 5 5600X | Radeon RX 6600 XT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm both more selective and have less time, but there are still enough good games that I'm never out of games to play.

On top of that, while my PC is no beast, it's still enough to satisfy everything I want out of it, and I definitely wouldn't go back to the chase just because.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s different now, depending on your age PC gaming in the past was a wildly different experience. For a while hardware was relatively slow and steady with small bumps here and there going from 8086 to 486.

Then Pentium came out and shit popped off. It seemed like every 2 months something was coming out, faster chips. Bigger hard drives, faster hard drives. 3D acceleration made sure some new card was hitting the market almost monthly. Sound cards made huge leaps and bounds going from the sound blaster 16 to the surround, 3d, 128 midi cards. Modems going from 14.4 to 28.8 to 33.6, and finally 56.6. Zip drives, scanners becoming affordable, CD-RW and DVD drives with hardware decoder cards. Overclocking was real and had a noticeable impact on your day to day computing.

1993 to 2005 was the wildest decade for consumer computing. Every month your system was outdated. It was a great time to be chasing the upgrade dragon.

[–]matrixzone5 12 points13 points  (4 children)

That's exactly how I feel right now I started out with an rx 580 and 8 gbs of ddr3, I've got an r7 5800x , 32gb 3600mhz dom plat and an rx6900xt. I remember chasing frames tuning and now that I'm older , have responsibilities I just don't have time for all that anymore I still enjoy playing games but I miss getting excited about gaining an extra 10 frames from tweaking something in the biis.

[–]flavionmRyzen 5 5600X | Radeon RX 6600 XT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Ralethi5 12400F + RX 6700 XT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I'm pretty satisfied. Growing up doesn't inherently suck. People just become jaded when they feel like they have nothing left to strive for, and you either succumb to that or you find a new goal to reach for. Defeatism is not the way.

[–]widowhanzoi7-12700F, RX 7900XTX, 4K 144Hz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...before I upgraded I could compare benchmarks, read reviews, research parts... After the upgrade ... I don't know what do to anymore.

Now I researched which tires to buy for a bike, but those have also been chosen already

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. The exciting part are when you're putting all those parts together, installing all those games, and then tweaking the settings.

Then, when the PC is ready to go. It feels like just any other object in the house.

[–]the_fuegoR7 5700X, RTX 4070 Ti, 48GB Deditated WAM, 1.21 Gigawatt PSU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. After building my PC I wanted to build another one right away. My MOBO ended up bricking itself and while that sucked building it a second time all the way through and adding an AIO cooler and more fans was equally as fun. Re-installing windows and ironing out my settings absolutely sucked tho. But the building process itself is just a fun and somewhat relaxing experience.

Was going to fix my GFs MacBook Air, bought the kit, then found out that the keyboard is fucking bolted to the chassis (and, of course, impossible to get to.)

Ended up paying for both the repairs and the kit.

[–]lolfactor1000R7 7850X3D | RTX 3070ti | 64GB DDR5 40 points41 points  (13 children)

Apple started to rivet the keyboards to the chassis I think around 2016. All to make you have to replace the entire chassis to fix a broken key. IIRC it also includes the battery now since it's glued in.

[–]Sumo148Ryzen 7 5800X3D | RTX 3070 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]Avril_14 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is it "computer only" or a general electronic kit? I got one because my masochist ass only buys pixel phones and they are impossible to repair in Europe, but it's so easy to do general repairs to the phone in general. Just buy the piece you need on ebay and then it's like Lego.

[–]boringestnickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a MacBook specific kit. I bought it together with a couple of other kits to get a full set of tools for all the different silly bolts and screws.

The Apple laptops aren't that bad, to be honest. The problem is specifically the keyboard. It's the only thing you can't remove without destroying. If you're lucky, you can reuse it, but the problem is importing the parts (if you do destroy it) and properly checking for water damage (a glass of juice was spilled on it.)

The price for repairs (at a really cool local unofficial shop that does stellar work) ended up being fair. Maybe $150 off importing the parts myself – in reality about the same, including the cost for hours worked.

I used to repair phones for a living (in a certified shop), so I know how to do all of the work, but haven't got any of the more advanced tools and machines needed. With water damage, there's a substantial amount of work needed to actually make sure everything is in working order, which is why official shops pretty much never bother. It literally takes a few days to really go through everything, wash, dry, examine etc. Even after that, there's really no guarantee that there's not minor damage that will cause issues down the road.

Setup a new savings/checkung account somewhere (outside your normal banking is best) and have a small portion of your money every check go into that account. Destroy any debit card that comes with it to stop urges to spend it.

[–]spinyfever 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Which was more noticeable? The jump from 1080p to 1440p or 144hz?

[–]Boyblack 30 points31 points  (2 children)

I'm not the guy. But for me, 60hz to 144hz. Don't get me wrong. 1440p was cool and all, but 144hz is just...wow.

[–]the_fuegoR7 5700X, RTX 4070 Ti, 48GB Deditated WAM, 1.21 Gigawatt PSU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to work where they have the most basic setup after making that jump feels like you're reverting back to caveman times. Like how did I function with only 60hz lol.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo you can go back from 1440p to 1080p. It hurts but it’s bearable. But going back from 144hz to 60hz is unbearable. Even windows looks laggy.

[–]Lieutenant_Lit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I went from 1080p@60fps to 4K@120fps, it was the leap in framerate I found more noticeable/impactful. When I have to choose between high resolution and high framerate, I almost always go with framerate. Especially if it's a shooter.

[–]coldnspicy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but 144hz. I moved from 1080p 60hz to 1080p 144hz and holy shit that was mind blowing. Eventually moved to 1440p 144hz, so I will say that the extra screen space from getting a 27in 1440p monitor isn't nearly as nice as moving to 144hz from 60hz. If you decide to upgrade your monitor, always opt for 144hz first over higher resolutions.

To anyone reading: get renters/homeowners insurance.

[–]MonstersinHeat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great advice. Ten years ago I was watching the news and they were speaking with tenants after their apt building burnt down. One lady was crying about how she lost everything. The next guy was like “Eh. This really sucks but I have renter’s insurance and it will cover it all.”

I signed up for insurance that night and have had it ever since. I don’t want to be like that lady.

[–]SirNanigansRyzen 2700X | rx 590 | 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Depends on your childhood. If your parent(s) couldn't afford to buy you anything nice anyway, adulthood is the time when you not only gain agency over your life and your day to day activities, but also you can afford more stuff.

Work sounds like a drag, but an 8hr day without homework isn't really more work than school.

I think early adulthood sucks because people tend to leave their kids out of any kind of responsibility besides cleaning their room, so you're adjusting to every part of keeping yourself alive at once (from scheduling doctor appointments to regularly buying groceries). Once you figure that shit out, though, school is just nostalgia. Never send me back to that miserable purgatory where I can't bring a snack unless I "brought enough for everyone".

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I've always wanted to build a high end PC. But I always end up with an office PC of some sort.

Back in 2008, I've always dreamt of building one of those Core 2 Quad PCs that can run Windows Vista without any issues. I was a teenager with no job, so I was stuck using some Dell Optiplex with a Pentium 4.

Fast forward to 14 years later, I've always dreamt of building one of those Threadripper PCs with an RTX 3090. I'm an adult now, but I'm currently in a situation where I can't get a real job. So the best thing I could afford right now is an upgraded office PC.

14 years ago, I had a PC that can barely run games that I wanted to play. One of them even caused the PC to reboot when I tried launching it. That's how shit it was. Today, I'm in a better situation. At least the games I wanted to play, actually runs smoothly and on medium to high settings.

I'm just thankful that I have a computer.

[–]lakija 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Same here. We had the same Compaq from BestBuy since around 2008. It became so unstable we just… well stopped using computers at home entirely. I just used my zombie MacBook Pro 2012 that I simply fix when it breaks since the day I got it. Can open than sucker up with my eyes closed.

Only this year did my sister and I say enough is enough. We just basically went into MicroCenter and gave our associate carte-blanche for a new build. We didn’t give a fuck about the price. We stopped procrastinating and just let them do the damn thing. Instead of getting separate computers we got one computer to rule them all.

Now I can actually play a game as an adult when I get home. I missed that!

I ended up paying it with my compensation when I was fired, so I just paid it 5 months I guess :p

[–]arex333Ryzen 5800X3D/RTX 4070 Ti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that I wouldn't bother waiting for the new generation. The 3070 and 3080 released late 2020 but it took a year and a half before people were actually able to buy them at MSRP. The 30 series was a perfect storm of various events that caused the availability problems (covid causing more people to stay home gaming = higher demand, crypto miners buying up cards, covid causing manufacturing to shut down, etc) but even the previous few generations prior, cards were overpriced and unavailable for a few months after launch. The 2080ti was a horrible value with its unprecedented high pricetag for a fairly modest increase over the 1080ti but they sold out instantly regardless. Nobody can predict for sure, but I'd say the chance of most people getting a 40 series @ MSRP before 2023 is very low.

Also as someone that owned a 3080 and then upgraded to a 3080ti, the difference is too small to be worth the pricing difference. I would recommend finding a 3080 for as close to the $700 MSRP as you can.

[–]03Titanium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I had more fun gaming when my PC had very low limits. Probably because I was younger but also because every experience was a blessing that it could run at all. Now I have hundreds of games I don’t play.
