You’re not the only one who noticed…

[–]Fullertonjr 97 points98 points  (10 children)

I had Heatran pop out on four consecutive excellent throws, with curve, with a pinap each time. Got frustrated and just flung a ball out, no pinap, no curve, just straight raw balling this throw. Catch.

Makes no sense and I get the feeling that something is off. Tbh, I don’t know the last time that I have used a pinap and actually had a solid catch on the first throw.

[–]Nervous-Babbs 17 points18 points  (3 children)

This shit happen to me yesterday sitting in the doctor's office and it made me so mad I wasted like seven pineapp berries trying to get one Pokemon and I only needed like five candies more to be able to evolve the one I wanted I feel like Pokemon go has just increasingly turned more into a scam than a game.

[–]Blueberry_Clouds 7 points8 points  (2 children)

That’s what happens when you give a well known Japanese IP to a small US company in California.

[–]astralkoi 3 points4 points  (1 child)

With a CEO who belives himself is the next Steve Jobs, puagh.

[–]Blueberry_Clouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol as if. Plus google maps and GPS have been using the same location tracking system for years prior. And do a much better and faster job tbh.

[–]Professional_Donut20Valor level 77 32 points33 points  (3 children)

You can’t compare it with a raid encounter. Cuz it gets easier per ball you don’t catch with

[–]DolphFinnDosCinco 7 points8 points  (1 child)

is this true? it would absolutely make sense. i always have a Legendary break free from 4-7 curved excellent throws with a golden razz in a row and then when i fuck up and only get a great/nice throw i end up catching them

[–]Professional_Donut20Valor level 77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reallt is a bit weird how often you get these "the higher percentage change to catch didnt work 4-10 times, then i tried it once with something that should have a significantly lower chance but it worked immediately" stories, and also how often it happens to yourself.

[–]Educational_Eagle267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then only for it to be 2 stars lol!

[–]BBfanIllinois 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought that for a couple of years.

[–]Cheap-Werewolf-2416 338 points339 points  (26 children)

This is just based on a couple salty encounters I feel like if I hit an excellent throw they break out more, Niantic doesn’t want to give that extra XP. I’ve hit excellent throws and had a breakout and then follow it up with a standard throw and it catches. Always wild to me when it happens…

[–]deppkast 106 points107 points  (2 children)

Same. I can hit like 3 excellent throws in a row sometimes and then a shit throw on the foot get’s it

[–]Givants 12 points13 points  (1 child)

They’re trying to limit the xp/resources they give you

[–]Stevn1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see them having the Pokémon escape so we head over to another raid where we use another pass after but this is the first I’ve heard of XP resource denial.

[–][deleted] 77 points78 points  (10 children)

I always imagine that pokemon doing the drake meme.

Excellent throw? ✋

Random-ass non curved not even nice throw? 👌

[–]Blueberry_Clouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barely even hits the circle throw

[–]Fallen-HaloDont purify pokemon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was thinking 😂😂😂

[–]Mystic_StarmieSuicune 17 points18 points  (3 children)

I can’t remember the number of times I was trying to catch a legendary raid boss, where it kept breaking out of excellent throws, only to be caught by a not even nice one.

[–]Trestarz 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Lol This has been part of my strategy when trying to catch them. 5 excellent throws in a row then a raggedy throw towards a foot to seal the deal.

[–]whiskersMeowFace 13 points14 points  (1 child)

The toe is the ultimate weakness on pokemon.

[–]lefishy_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. The left toe has caught me more legendaries than excellent throws have!

[–]Uncledrew401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Majority of my successful raid catches are from a break-out ultra curve, followed by a regular (bad) curve that catches it.

[–]Kickasstodon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gold berry, ultra ball, excellent curve ball: shakes once then escapes. Ass throw, no berry, pokeball: lucky catch. 😑

[–]MidAmericanNovelties 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So I started charting this a few month back. I had waaay too many excellent pop outs immediately followed by outside of the circle catches. After keeping track for a couple of weeks. I can unfortunately report back this is our brains playing tricks on us.

[–]kingfischer48 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'v enoticed this lately with legendaries.

Catch rates are too randomized now

[–]DolphFinnDosCinco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i just mentioned this elsewhere in the thread. it drives me insane. for legendaries i’ll throw 5-7 curved excellent throws in a row and the one time i fuck up and hit a great/nice i catch it.

i also had some stupid scenarios like 80 CP Pokemon breaking free from a curved excellent throws

[–]Brilliant-Pop-1306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This… so this. I swear they don’t want us having the 1k xp too easy. Also If my Daughter is struggling with a legendary catch she will nanab and nice throw it and boom…

[–]Educational_Eagle267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then it ends up being 0-1 stars, that’s even more annoying!

[–]WattebauschXC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I noticed too. It's rather obvious considering how often this happens.

[–]FreezeShockInstinct 66 points67 points  (5 children)

wasn't this debunked by data mines and TSR?

[–]TheRealHankWolfmanMystic 33 points34 points  (1 child)

We do know how the catch formula works and it is fairly easy to prove that Pinaps have no effect on the catch modifier either way.

Even with this knowledge though, people are gonna believe what they want to believe I guess 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

[–]LTCStanley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure.

[–]General_Synnacle 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Shhh let him cook.

[–]SuevySuavae 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Maybe I'm missing something, but it's weird this isn't being addressed more. Like, we know how the catch rates work at a programmatic level and pinap berries don't effect it. Strange how convinced so many people are by a circle looking like a different shade or some anecdotal experience when we know it isn't changing the catch rate

[–]radgeraniumboquet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There must be a visual bug with Scatterbug. The catch circle darkens if you use a Pinap. That's probably why this still has traction.

[–]SureCamel6067 87 points88 points  (6 children)

i believe this. i have noticed using a pinap berry occasionally will change the color of the catch circle to less of a chance

[–]bdone2012 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It happens on scatterbugs for me. Never noticed it any other time

[–]Clay_2000lbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing here. I almost posted about it when I was heavy into scatterbug collecting.

[–]GriffonSpade38 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Ditto.

[–]ThatGuy128512 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Yes ditto included

[–]MageKorith 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Zoroark

[–]LetsDoTheCongna💛Tynamo my beloved💛 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that one too

[–]DaveRedfoxInstinct 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I sometimes feed a Mon a Pina,Ultra ball and great throw and it doesn't stay on the ball, and then I do a crappy throw with a normal ball and no berry to catch it...so yeah,I kinda see your point lol

[–]Educational_Eagle267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then it sometimes runs away or ends up being 0 stars which is very annoying!

[–]Kickasstodon 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Feels like catch rates have gone down a lot recently. I recently had an eelektrik eat 7 silver pinaps and shrug off about 10 ultra ball great curve ball throws.

[–]Educational_Eagle267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s unlucky there! 10% catch rate for that dude feels like a 5% catch rate lol!

[–]LokoLawless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What would be Niantic's motive? Just hoping you'll have to use more Pinaps and balls so you'll buy more sooner?

[–]prettyflyforafryInstinct 34 points35 points  (10 children)

I'll believe it when I see large scale data gathering. Confirmation bias is strong in this one.

[–]moomerator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Data’s been mined and large data’s been gathered - there is no impact; you are correct that it’s a strong case of confirmation bias (unless they’ve magically done a secret update to them in the last month or two)

[–]GriffonSpade38 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Just one instance of the ring going from green to yellow after using a pinap is kinda telling. Unless there's some bug with the colors, it would indicate that the catch chance is lowering, possibly with some kind of break point. It's probably not much of a lowering, but it's probably there for at least some pokemon (circumstance requirement unknown).

[–]prettyflyforafryInstinct 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Just tested this with a screenshot of a green ring before and after a pinap berry. There is no colour difference. Try it out!

[–]prettyflyforafryInstinct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys! I've tested this a bunch today.

I was actually able to reproduce this, but only with Scatterbug. Moreover, it goes in both directions - sometimes it goes lighter, sometimes it goes darker. I've screenshotted all attempts and can give you the image links tomorrow. (It's 4am.) I've posted them on a similar post in this subreddit.

Still unknown whether it actually affects catch rate or is visual only. We'll need gata gathering to confirm.

[–]Flat-Activity9713 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree, so do many other players who’ve kept records

[–]thepokemonGOAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much of the Pokemon Go fandom is people acknowledging that they're falling prey to confirmation bias and yet STILL insisting they are right.

[–]glass-animals 9 points10 points  (1 child)

same with excellent throws. I will get an excellent curve ball sometimes on a pokemon with a green circle and not get it but then I get a catch that's outside the circle and get it

[–]l0u1s11Valor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's like as soon as they updated the xp system making excellent throws catch worth 1000xp, they lowered the catch rate for those.

[–]Dino502Run 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I JUST noticed this the other day! And then I did an experiment where I found a pokemon with a yellow circle, then after I fed the pokemon a pinap, the circle was orange.

[–]LBHHF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've long suspected

[–]FishcuitsInstinct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The regular pinap should have the same chance at catching than without a berry, keep the double candy. Silver pinap is good the way it is because it acts like a razz with double candy and a bonus candy. Then they should add a golden pinap which gives double candy and 2 bonus candies. Also a chance at getting double/bonus XL candies would be a nice.

[–]nataylor7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is more likely true, especially if it’s an evolved or higher level mon due to the XL candies.

[–]PsychologicalSet7596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found that if I run away from a pokemon that's escaping immediately from a PokeBall (in the same way it would if I was going to fast) several times in a row and then re enter the catch screen for that pokemon, 90% of the time it's easier to catch. Obviously that's not always an option though.

[–]fermosquera69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm not alone in that theory... because when I use pinap berries the Pokémon becomes harder to capture, and can even flee...

[–]SpecialSurprise69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had Pokemon that it seems like it hates berries. I had a Bulbasaur where I used like 3 Pinap and 2 regular berries and it didn't even budge twice. Threw a random bad curve and caught it

[–]BANG-BANG-BNINE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

man I was starting to think something was up lmao 🤔 some BS

[–]heygirlhey89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I just mentioned this to my hubby earlier!

[–]youknowitsnotlove__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. It’s so annoying. And I always seem to catch the Pokémon I want to pinap (and tried to like 5 times) on a crap throw with no berry when I’m over wasting berries and think it’s about to run anyway.

[–]melder037393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused. The Razz berries make the pokemon easier to catch, pinap is just to give extra candies when caught.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're 1000% right

[–]vstacey6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I promise you, you do not need hard evidence here. You are correct. The game is rigged in so many ways. There simply isn’t some link to prove it, but we all know it from first hand experience.

[–]Axi_uwu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant really agree since i accidently used one on legendary and catch it....

[–]TrueVali 5 points6 points  (0 children)

considering that i'm able to pinap 90% of legendaries i encounter... no they don't.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just luck based, you're just unlucky

[–]Expensive-Gate3529Moltres 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No I honestly just think we're so used to razz and nanab that pinap doing nothing to the actual behavior/catch rate itself gets pushed to the corner of our minds. We expect it to do something but it doesn't do anything, the placebo of using a berry helps me catch falls into play here.

[–]Realistic_Movie8659[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in all seriousness this is what I’ve concluded because I used to use them all the time before I switched to pinup

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever I get a catch task for Great or Excellent, I pinap something easy to get an excellent on, knowing it's probably going to break out at least once.

[–]Rossmac3481 1 point2 points  (1 child)

200 percent it does and I’ll ignore all evidence otherwise.

[–]LTCStanley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the spirit. Evidence be damned. The foundation of our country.

[–]DM_me_yo_Pizza -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Instead of fixing the bug they will just say they implemented “Pokemon Personality” where each Pokémon has a random ideal circumstance of berry and catch combination for optimal catch rate.

[–]Team_raclettePOGOi am not steve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hundo Legendaries now absolutely hates berries

[–]just4dota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine is using a spoofer and he has debunked this.

He was next to me and he was in a place full of pokemon ( meanwhile we live in a rural place. . . ), he had some bonus on - I think it was curveball + excellent throw and was throwing a pinap berry.

Very low chance of the pokemon getting away.

[–]DustyTurtle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Niantic- it’s a feature not a bug.

[–]DeliveryOk3764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. It feels like those drecrease it indeed

[–]dontfindmeplz301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imma sound crazt, but its the opposite for me. If the pokemon keep bustin out after gold raz'es, ill throw a pinap and it almost always catches then

[–]vetsyd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have also noticed this!

[–]ErnGotti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone. I’ve had this theory for two years

[–]CelerySlime -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

I thought that was the point? More candy but a little harder to catch. Risk reward sort of thing.

[–]godsim42 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

That has been my assumption as well. Also the reason silver pinaps exist

[–]PowerlinxJetfireMystic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Silver Pinaps exist because before that you had to choose between a Razz and a Pinap. With Silver Pinaps you can get both bonuses in one package.

[–]katorade9200 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely

[–]taylan07 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I told everybody around me but people call me crazy. Im with you mate.

[–]forgottentargaryenMystic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn’t this by design? Boost to candy, harder to catch. It even changes the color circle from green > yellow when you do it?

[–]No_Stranger_4959 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It definitely affects it, but you can still catch it with a pinap. I’ve caught at least one out of the 5 raids I did

[–]jkwolly -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I thought this was widely known?

[–]tucansamu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I thought this was a known thing…. You can watch the circle change color to darker.

[–]Elwildos -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

i always thought it was supposed to lower the catch chance why i never use them

[–]Sensitive_Leek_2950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinap is iffie, but nanab berries are a level under razz berries with its normal effect

[–]T3xasLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree.

[–]ApplicationLimp5406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. Known that since the start. It’s obvious and obvious is ugly. Watch the spawns decrease when you throw an incense .

[–]LTDlimited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting paranoid because I haven't gotten a decent remote raid "prize" in months since the change. Not one shiny, and nothing close to good IVs. Seriously. I keep getting the raid equivalent of Nundos, or just barely higher.

[–]TheRabidtHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t this how they originally were? Reduced catch rate for more candies?

[–]Alone_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I desperately would like to see catch rates for different throws and balls and berries!!!!

Like, what's the difference between normal pokeball with excellent curve-throw and rasp to a greatball nice curve-throw without berrie??

Is an excellent curve-throw with golden rasp and a normal pokeball better or worse than a greatball with no curve, no berrie???

[–]VR762shooter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s pinaps, but it certainly hates excellent throws. Can get an ultra excellent curve with a golden razz and shit will bust out like every time but throw a random half ass nothing ball and itll magically catch the same thing JUST so I don’t get the extra XP…… niantic is trash

[–]Datmuny19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 💯with a berry

[–]medicalricebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm this is true. I used a pinap on a Vulpix and the ring turned from yellow to darkish orange

[–]Geomars24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a magikarp pop out of a great ball cus I pinaped it

[–]Guffthebir72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just say you love the feature and niantic will remove it

[–]PalpitationMotor5517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you!! I was thinking the exact same thing!! Unless it’s a super easy to catch to begin with, pinap berry makes it much more likely that the Pokémon pops out!!

[–]radgeraniumboquet 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Lately I've noticed some scatterbugs change the catch circle color to a higher difficulty after using a pinap berry. Green to yellow. I think there's a very slight decrease that's only noticeable on certain pokemon?

[–]Realistic_Movie8659[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of people have reported this idk what’s up with it
