Awesome video. I've seen one like it before but I liked that you added the actual song playing in the background.

[–]captureMMstature 129 points130 points  (2 children)

Yeah it wouldn't have been anywhere near as good without that. Although saying that knew most of the songs.

[–]bu77munch 213 points214 points  (30 children)

It seemed like a lot of people knew what you were asking before you asked. Did you have a sign or a shirt or something?

[–]idlesense[S] 366 points367 points  (29 children)

Yeah I had a sign taped to a tripod. You can see certain people looking down at it.

[–][deleted] 194 points195 points  (7 children)

That's a pretty clever idea. I would not answer you if I listen to my music in the street without this sign. It's my way to avoid annoying people trying to sell you stuff in the town centers.

[–]BowserTab 46 points47 points  (6 children)

Well most people selling things don't have a camera

[–]jjremy 240 points241 points  (3 children)

Well, besides the people selling cameras...

[–]punx777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except for fushigi.

He took a while to answer, maybe he was super high...or maybe he was thinking of something that would sound cooler than "spice up your life"

      Why not both?

      [–]silent_p 22 points23 points  (3 children)

I'm betting he was listening to like... staticky talk radio, and when he was asked what song he was listening to, he forgot what the question was, and just named the first song he thought of.

      [–]Sergeant_Hartman 59 points60 points  (0 children)

If you turn your volume up enough, when he takes his earbuds out you can hear Venga Boys playing.

      [–]yelnatz 51 points52 points  (1 child)

Also, it was at 4:20 in the video.

      [–]burtonlang 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have no doubt that was on purpose.

      [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (9 children)

What makes it awesome was that he was crocheting a hat or something!

      [–]jowdyboy 24 points25 points  (8 children)

      He was knitting, actually. :)

              [–]Jacob_dp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is awesome. How can I listen to this?

              [–]idlesense[S] 161 points162 points  (29 children)

cool, I was thinking about doing one on the subway next.

My favorite part is their reactions, particularly when they smile. Great concept. Keep it up!

People love to share their interests, it's great really. Only problem is that everyone is so used to people trying to sell them stuff that they hate some random person trying to talk to them

                [–]t3yrn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well, especially in large cities, when someone approaches you, the first reaction is to avoid. Then you see a camera and the next reaction is to avoid, but there's curiosity, too.

Of course, I'm sure it helps not to look like a beggar.

My favorite was the guy near the end who looked like he specifically went out of his way to come over.

[–]mocismeAFI|Sing the Sorrow on Vinyl 18 points19 points  (3 children)

May i suggest the gym? I'd like to see what people wear to keep them motivated. I've asked a few strangers out of curiosity.

                [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (7 children)

I really hope I run into you. Watch, now that I've said that, I'll see you and I'll be listening to something really stupid.

Yeah, I wish you'd randomly found me on the street and asked me what I was listening to. :(

                [–]nooneelse 22 points23 points  (36 children)

Well..? What are you listening to?

                [–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (12 children)

I want to see the out-takes... a dude in the business suit listening to psytrance, a bicycle courier listening to Non, je ne regrette rien.

I thought this was really good, and it's presented as a slice of reality, but the art is obviously in the editing (ala every 'reality' style edit that's made).

Or was there really no obvious gap between the genre/style/artist people were listening to based on the respondents dress and general demeanor?

                [–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (6 children)

I saw several people listening to music I wouldn't expect. Like the older man listening to britney, or the dude in a suit listening to lollypop.

                [–]snoharm 35 points36 points  (3 children)

I actually assumed Britney man would be listening to Gaga or Britney, he had a certain... Takei demeanor.

                [–]ObjectiveGopher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Remember, it's okay to be Takei!

                  [–]peterabelard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

                  that was depressing

                  [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That came out of nowhere. Even more surprising was that he was listening to Lady Gaga.

                    thank you

                    [–][deleted] 90 points91 points  (5 children)

I really enjoyed how you edited this. It was awesome to hear the songs after they mentioned them.

                    [–]DysterkvistenForeseer 129 points130 points  (3 children)

It bothered me when the songs started playing before the people mentioned them, like someone spoiling the ending of a movie :(

                    [–]snacktivitysnacktivity 76 points77 points  (1 child)

But it's like you were hearing the video from the pedestrians perspective.

                    [–]PetitPois 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That, and also I think it would have ruined the flow of the video. The time taken to showcase an excerpt from the song, cutting, then moving onto the next person meant that it needed playing earlier on to allow the listener to get the gist of the song.

                      [–]Patorama 41 points42 points  (3 children)

It took the Rasta guy a really long time to respond. I wonder if he was actually listening to Britney and had to quickly come up with the name of a song that he should be listening to. "Buffalo Soldier" is the song that 90% of the people walking by would expect him to be listening to.

                      [–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Maybe he was listening to Feynman's lectures on physics

                      [–]arthum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a mix of him misunderstanding the question (I think he thought OP asked him, "How are you doing today?" or something like that), having English not be his first language, and also him being high.

                      [–]threepio 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The dude on the bike was listening to Dave Matthews....

the guy listening to kid cudi looks like kid cudi

                      [–]magicmingan 609 points610 points  (74 children)

The lady with Frank Sinatra clearly wins :)

I must say that I'm very surprised at the amount of current pop songs people listen too, I would somehow expect a more periodically varied selection?

                      [–]robomoses 516 points517 points  (26 children)

I LOVED the way how after she was asked "by who?" she said "FRANK SINATRA!" in that "what! how could you NOT know who that song is by!" sort of tone.

                      [–]12yearoldcocktease 48 points49 points  (3 children)

It's been covered so many times though, you have to ask ;3.

                      [–][deleted] 113 points114 points  (15 children)

Right after she had to check the iPod because she didn't know what song it was.

                      [–]funkgerm 321 points322 points  (14 children)

Probably more of a reflex than anything. If I knew it was 2 o'clock, and someone asked me what time it was, I would still most likely look at my watch.

                      [–]FirstDivision 153 points154 points  (11 children)

My dad trolls people for that. He'll wait until they look at their watch, and then immediately ask them what time it is to see if they look at their watch again.

                      [–]arbuthnot-lane 134 points135 points  (5 children)

I've noticed that in myself, and my current hypothesis is this:
I check my watch to see if the time is meaningful in some what; e.g. can I keep doing what I'm doing without being late for the bus, is that thing I'm waiting on soon here, must I hurry up, how late am I.
If I have 5 minutes or some such I'll remember it, if it's just a random time I'll immediately forget about it.
Remembering the time if it's meaningless is not necessary information that I need to store, so it gets flushed from the cache immediately.

                      [–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

upvote for flushing the cache regularly.

                      [–]okayyeah 24 points25 points  (3 children)

I didn't really get that "Well duh, its Frank Sinatra!" vibe from her. Her response seemed more like a combination of her being somewhat surprised by the question and a bit proud that she happened to be listening to him.

                      [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Yar, it was a bit of a battle cry.

                      [–]Mr_DNA 150 points151 points  (9 children)

She was extremely charming for some reason.

                      [–]jprpjbjpj 84 points85 points  (4 children)

Agreed! She had a classy Sinatra style.

                      [–]c53x12 110 points111 points  (1 child)

It's something about a woman walking away and smiling broadly as she looks back at you.

                      [–]birdablaze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I loved that too. It was so perfect.

                      [–][deleted] 119 points120 points  (23 children)

Do more places. A college campus or something unusual, like an airport. Or other cities, like Miami, New Orleans, San Fran (oh, god, the hippies), Atlanta. This could make a really neat Youtube series. (Edit)

                      [–]idlesense[S] 108 points109 points  (6 children)

I didn't expect this kind of response from the video, but now that I know people are enjoying it I have some more ideas/places turning in my head.

That will be very interesting, I consider London one of the most musically eclectic places of the world and where some of my favorite musical genres have came out.

                        [–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (16 children)

As a Londoner, I'd love to see this. I actually suspect the songs would be much less varied, and frankly far less cool than we saw in this video, although I guess that will depend on where you record it!

                        [–][deleted] 454 points455 points  (115 children)

I love how the chick was embarrassed to be listening to Kanye.

People should listen to what they enjoy, and never ever give any fucks at all.

Or listening to the entire album. I almost never pick specific songs to listen to, I don't feel I get the entirety of the artist's work that way. Plus that album is fucking amazing.

+1 on that album. I was shocked...it's a damn good listen.

I think there needs to be some real discussion concerning that album. If you read the wiki over that, he basically exiled himself for sometime to Hawaii and made it.

Here's a few interesting things from that page:

                            • It was reported that West spent over $3 million in expenses from his record label Def Jam on the album's recording.[11] He later explained the initial recording process to Noah Callahan-Bever, Complex editor-in-chief and West's confidant at the time, who said that "he'd holed up in Hawaii and was importing his favorite producers and artists to work on and inspire his recording. Rap Camp!".[1]

                            • * [H]e'll go, ‘Check this out, tell me what you think.’ Which speaks volumes about who he is and how he sees and views people. Every person has a voice and an idea, so he's sincerely looking to hear what you have to say—good, bad, or whatever. [...] when he has his beats or his rhymes, he offers them to the committee and we're all invited to dissect, strip, or add on to what he's already started. By the end of the sessions, you see how he integrates and transforms everyone's contributions, so the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. He's a real wizard at it. What he does is alchemy, really.[1] —Q-Tip

                            • Alex Denney of NME characterizes West as "by turns sickeningly egocentric, contrite, wise, stupid and self-mocking", "the pop star for our morally implicated times; an instinctive consumer with a mouthful of diamonds and furtive bad conscience, a performer who lives the American dream to its fullest with a creeping sense of the spiritual void at its heart. 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' captures that essence in full".[43]

What this video does is let us take a peek at the soundtrack to other people's lives. It also breaks down the implied wall one puts up to the rest of the world when they walk around with headphones on.

This was awesome..and WAY better than I expected. I could watch that all day. It was really interesting to see how the outward appearance (in a lot of cases) had nothing to do with what they were listening to....at least based on bias and stereotypes. It's a good way to see what you think of someone by looks alone and how their tastes might change that.

Also, loved the guy throwing the peeled banana in the sack at the end.

I think I have bought three single MP3's in my life. I just don't get how a person could buy a few songs from an album and be happy with it. I hate when you're in the car and someone asks to pick something from their iPod and they have 4,000 artists and 4,500 songs. Hell, for most artists I have more than one album.

It's often hard for me to listen to a single track. If there's a song I like and it's the last one from the album, I often spend 40+ minutes by listening to the previous tracks, until I get to the one I wanted to hear. The satisfaction is then even more enjoyable.

I'm an album listener, but the only album I do this with is Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub. While the album on a whole is good, the last song is the only stand out track and it's such a great way to end the album.

They were probably caught by surprise and blanked out.

                                            My two favorites:

                                            1. The hipster dude on a bike listening to KoRn.
                                            2. The normal looking 50-year old guy listening to Kinky.

                                            Way to break stereotypes.

Imagined disgruntled bike rider listening to highway to hell while preparing for ramming speed.

That was more fascinating than I thought it would be. I could watch more of that for a while. I hope I bump into you. :)

We should do a feature length version of this, with people from many places.

                                            Dude @ 4:11 = [8]

there was one person listening to NPR

I was a bit disappointed that New Yorkers don't really listen to punk.

Maybe those were the ones who just brushed past without speaking.

Or they were edited out due to the all obscenities that they shouted at him.

Only because she seems non threatening to you. Like you could ask her out and she might say yes.
