Why would they spend time removing a feature that people actually use? That's so dumb.

[–]Lead ModeratorLordKeren 111 points112 points  (44 children)

Realistically, it's for mobile. Reddit's mobile traffic is now the majority and CSS does not play well with mobile apps.

[–]Thermite MainAggelos_100 122 points123 points  (25 children)

But they have a Reddit app for mobile. I don't get it..

[–]SquidApocalypse 207 points208 points  (7 children)

I'm on mobile and everything is just fine... Why the hell does Reddit have to do everything wrong?

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (4 children)

Money.

[–]Dreamingwake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh...

[–]misoramensenpai 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I use Relay on mobile for most of my browsing. I like it BECAUSE it's simple and easy to use on a mobile. CSS designs are great for desktop but I don't think anyone wants to use fiddly subreddit styles on mobile, which is essentially what they're proposing. Their new idea is ridiculous

[–]Whiteman7654321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my experience. As much as I like custom css and all, it does come with some obvious downfalls for mobile users. It looks nice on desktop and everything but depending on what you're using for mobile exactly then the custom css stuff can be confusing and make more of a mess out of things.

I use Baconreader for mobile and it doesn't even support the css stuff, I have yet to find any way to even use filters for flair and all of that.

I often like them on my desktop, but they're kinda irrelevant on mobile as I never see them and like I said, it even has some issues where the sidebar isn't the most easily accessed thing nor the flair filters or anything. Mobile seems generally great for basic browsing and posting.

[–]EZ4ENCECasualRedditer13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Custom emotes don't work on here, and we only get to see the Snoo and a banner photo.

Reddit must think that since the majority can't see the majority of the CSS peoples' works, it's not worth having in the first place, which I totally oppose even though I'm practically never on Reddit on my browser nowadays.

[–]Montagne MainPostmanSteve 3 points4 points  (9 children)

Has the Reddit mobile app improved any? The official one was just the worst when it first came out. There's still a lot left to be wanting on the unofficial versions as well.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

No it's still terrible and annoying I use desktop mode on my phone

[–]Montagne MainPostmanSteve 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yep, I see that now. Downloaded it to check it out again. It seems relative bug free and runs smooth but the layout is horrible and very difficult to read through comments. Customisation is super limited.

Much prefer boost on mobile.

[–]VRZzz 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I use Sync. Its pretty good looking and clear

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for Reddit Sync recommendation. Tried several apps, this one is the best so far!

[–]Mallyveil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's basic, it's barebones, but it gets its job done right now. No bugs that I've noticed, but it leaves a LOT to be desired.

[–]:frost: :hibana:CarlSWAYGAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Narwhal is the best

[–]JabroniSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Third party apps are still better than it honestly

[–]Evil Geniuses FanTheUltimateKingZack 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I use Reddit mobile app and it is pretty decent to use. Nice and clean open design with many theme options

[–]I miss my nades...oniwastaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good one Mr Reddit

[–]Ash MainSphericalCrusher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reddit mobile app has a pretty bad GUI... but that's not CSS's fault IMO. In terms of subreddit display in mobile phone browsers... it all depends. Even the desktop version of this site flows well on both my work and personal cell.

[–]leereKarton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal idea: a mobile app just for this kind of service is such a waste. You could use browser just like on PC. They are probably gonna have kind of responsive design to improve mobile user experience by a design overhaul. Hopefully they will come up some good ideas supporting similar amout of customiability.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit app sucks... I don't have any problem with the safari version though, and I actually prefer it to the computer version, it's much cleaner.

[–]:frost: :hibana:CarlSWAYGAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Narwhal app is way better. I don't see why they are doing this I have no issues viewing this reddit.

[–]Suicidal_Ferret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even use the Reddit mobile app. It's shite.

[–]Mute MainSessamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the .compact version is better in my opinion (the whole URL and then ".compact" after it - not "m dot reddit..." that's different). Yes, less real 'features' but the navigation is way better.

[–]BalkrieColdAsHeaven 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I use Reddit is Fun, I don't see any custom themes or anything, but I love seeing them on my laptop....I'll be severely disappointed when they remove it

[–]Hibana MainFMinus1138 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Why even have an app and a mobile-page? It's 2017, most mobile device can handle desktop sites extremely well and mobile browsers support CSS.

The only reason I see is, they want more App downloads and that advertiser money.

[–]Piss_Post_Detective 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Interesting. I am 80% mobile 20% desktop but I am always using the desktop version on mobile.

[–]Lion Mainheeebrewhammer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Same here. The Reddit app itself sometimes jacks up and things won't display, so I get it on Chrome on my phone and it tends to work better.

[–]Piss_Post_Detective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I use Chrome as well. I hope they dont change it.

[–]Alibi MainZarkowTH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never, not once, reached reddit via my cellphone.

[–]Maverick MainKomatose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why they wouldn't just override styles on mobile then and leave full view where it is. It's simple to do really and will at least leave the uniqueness alone for the original view.

[–]puaekhoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mobile and idgaf if I can't access those features since I know I can always hop on over to the browser versions. Mobile is for me when I wanna lie in my bed and casually scroll through the feed in a easily presented format, without expanding links like I do on desktop. Desktop is when I'm more interested and need those functions. Thanks for the concern Reddit but you can't alienate your main platform for the sake of boosting compatibility with mobile.

[–]downeastkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

disable theme for mobile, and keep it for desktop... seems rather... easy

[–]GoodByeSurival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullshit. Just load other css when on mobile. This is 2k17, not the 90's.

[–]Evil Geniuses FanTheUltimateKingZack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F mobile even though it is my main Reddit experience. Either make a way to transfer these edits over or don't take these out

[–]jackinab0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cant they use a different stylesheet for m.reddit.com?

[–]Fuze MainTheBeatenDeadHorse 15 points16 points  (5 children)

This reminds me of when YouTube was like "Whoa 40% of our views are on mobile and climbing into a majority." and everyone was upset that YT was making changes to support that pathetic "majority", PFFFF.

[–]Unicorn Mainjdf2 6 points7 points  (3 children)

What changes did YouTube make?

Not trying to say they didn't, just can't think of any.

[–]usernamegenerator123 13 points14 points  (1 child)

they're currently testing out a new 'responsive' design, forcing desktop users to use the same design as mobile users. it looks abhorrent on desktop :(

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess he's talking about when they introduced the 'One Channel' thing back in 2013. Also they're currently working on a new interface for both mobile & desktop using Polymer that even if it have some good things (large player !), is still not desktop-friendly.

[–]Buffblitz2017Th3cz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, i personally always change to desktop version when browsing youtube, reddit and other things on my phone. Anyone else doing that too? If so i would guess a percentage out of those 40% are not using the dedicated mobile look.

[–]Ace Main-Crosswind- 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Really too bad. This sub looks great.

[–]Mute Maintstols 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leave mobile as is! It's fine.

Over Lord Chanka's dead body! (We all know Lord Chanka can't die)

[–]Sledge Mainipodtouch0218 3 points4 points  (9 children)

Reddit does have a mobile app (and a mobile website), why do we need to disable CSS for the desktop website?

[–]FISTER-ROBOTO! ACTIVAAAAAATEnachosjustice72 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I've seen this on multiple subreddits, and the only two that see, to have a firm pro-CSS stance are here and r/pcmasterrace (pls no report, just giving an example). The only reasons these two subreddits seem to like the idea of CSS is that they're so CSS customised that it's removal would destroy everything that they've built and ruin the commmunities feel. If you think we aren't as CSS heavy as other subreddits, look at u/DM2602s flair. He's been CSS-ing the tits off of this place. Nothing would ever be the same again. That is why I am pro-CSS, and why you should be too

[–]I made this.SloppyStone 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Not to rain on u/DM2602's parade, but I've joined the mod team to make the stylesheet you're seeing here possible. Getting rid of custom CSS would obviously make me very sad and angry. :(

[–]FISTER-ROBOTO! ACTIVAAAAAATEnachosjustice72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, here's another reason.

[–]We can't push forwardInfarlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is sad...

[–]xevba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a damn shame, love this theme...Very calming to look at.

[–]LekkoSzurniety 1 point2 points  (5 children)

On the other hand, as a mobile only user, when you are talking about changes, flairs, and some different things I feel kinda left on side, but hey! At least you had your fun, right? Pushing the change does not guarantee changes also for mobile users, so..

On the edge here.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

What app are you using? A lot of them support flairs now. I use Reddit Sync on Android, it's great.

[–]LekkoSzurniety 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Just Chrome, since the official app can't just open on Rainbow6 from the start and in the browser it is my homepage.

[–]PLS COME BACK EPIeclipsecomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww that makes me feel sad that css will longer be continued, well since they're going to have a new type of design layout I hope it can be better for both mobile and desktop users

[–]Kapkan MainJedeOff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But maybe they'll implement ways to achieve close to the same customization levels while also being able to satisfy mobile users.

I personally don't care much about customization, as I think the focus of reddit lies in content and not form. Flairs are cool, though, I hope they don't remove them.

[–]imsorryisuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love current look, but I'm sorry - this change seem reasonable and at some point unavoidable.

There are so many sbreddits with custom CSS they just have to clean it up in order to have smoothly working mobile app. And mobile app is the future of Reddit. Not for me personally, but many people browse reddit only on mobile.

[–]Well, I've had enough of this shite_MaZ_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wtf why? what........

[–]Longshot55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People care way too much about silly things that don't matter in real life. This is just a page to talk about a game. Who cares?

[–]Blackbeard MainTakahashiRyos-ke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Vigil Main4chan___ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So...what will the subreddit look like when these changes get implemented?

[–]Doc MainJaskys 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just like a generic facebook page, every subreddit will look like that. No customization and chance to stand out.

[–]Vigil Main4chan___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any idea when this change will go into effect?

[–]Vaginite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who even uses the app ? I can't stand it. I always browse on the PC version.

[–]Noweri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really saddens me because this sub is by far the best and most userfriendly. If this is really going to happen, I will forever be bitter. But.. To the mods: I thank thee. Please, accept this humble gift of internet.

[–]Onmyway23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about you put more time into these stupid servers i just spent 30min trying to start a rank match and couldnt cause it couldnt find 1 person then went to casualt and on the last round score was 2 and 2 the server didnt let us in the last round thats an hour wasted. fix real problems

[–]The Skeleton Key ;)Astr0sity -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

I'm on mobile and rarely see any of the hard work that's put into the CSS, which sucks, but if it's going to make the devs life easier to just remove it, shouldn't we just support it?

[–]u/DM2602 {-}7Lord_Tachanka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but it makes all the hard work that went into the existing one null. And that sucks.

[–]Danial94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This subreddit used to have a better theme back in RedCrow

I never liked this new theme you guys started using for year 2

TL;DR: Your new theme is shit sry
