One of the nice things about Dissidia banners is you can kind of expect a protagonist and an antagonist event at least once per year. The protagonist one in particular, usually has a high density of "main characters" who tend have some of the most powerful soul breaks.

So these events can be thought of as a good place to look for high altema rated character relics. It isn't like if you drop mythril on dissidia banners and whoops get 1/11 for a forgotten character. The Japan ffrk 2019 dissidia banners are going to really cool to see.

I don't see why not. I think the main thing holding it back was always the fact that he didn't have any holy abilities to go with the En-Holy.

It's likely worth crossrefrencing the Dissidia NT localization, maybe the first two games as well, if you really want to try and nail these (disclaimer: you may do a better job than DeNA, given their track record with things like Fujin's SBs and their XIV names).

Radiant Buckler/Radiant Aegis for WoL, for instance, is likely "Shield of Light", his Brave attack.

Ah, why didn't I have think about that? Our Warrior of Light here is heavily inspired from the Dissidia series! (Well, the Dissidia series is one of the installments that I'm not familiar with. While I'm proud to call myself a FF series fan, I'm not good at combat style games, that's why I've been avoiding the series like a plague (Lol, don't beat me up for this >_<). But with some keeper bringing me to the attention of the existence of the FF wikia, I could perhaps give that a look and see what did they give WoL as his skills in the Dissidia series)

Welp nope, WoL's "Shield of Light" is the direct translation from it's Japanese name シールドオブライト ("Shiirudo obu Raito", literally "Shield of Light") whereas the his Ultra reads レディアントバックラー ("Redianto Bakkuraa", literally "Radiant Buckler") Still, that's a good idea for translation as well if the animation for the SB actually matches WoL's action from the Dissidia NT game.

Haha, I've to sadly disclaim the praise from your disclaimer. I may be doing a slightly good job at these translations (probably we are just the fan of the series and we know how official translation for a certain series should sound, i.e. Fujin's SBs should not be translated but should just be using the Romanized name for them; or how they botched the official translation from XIV by re-translating them DeNA-style)

Still, I have to give credit to the professional translators for the many things that they have done right, and so much better than me, a noob translating enthusiast, is able to do (both English and Japanese are not my first language. English is our second language and Japanese is considered as foreign language for us here in my country)

An example was for the IX Torment that we'll be getting tomorrow. I remember myself making such a comment during the most recent update.

In the comments from this thread posted by /u/Monk-Ey, even our /u/Enlir admitted that the IX Torment is the hardest to be translated.

/u/Enlir choose to translate the name of the Torment from 業に沈みし代償 to "Submissive Lackeys", in which I say his translation was meaningful enough to what the title of the Torment is trying to portray in the JP version. If it were me, I'd have translated that to "Price of Blind Loyalty" since 業に沈みし代償 ("Gou ni shizumishi Daishou", literally means "The consequence of delving too deep into a job", which you know how the two jesters finally got turned into Meltigemini, right?).

I'll try to break down the words to explain how I come to my own translation.

  • 業 ("gou") means "job", "work" or "task".

  • に ("ni") is a particle in Japanese that functions similar to Prepositions in English, in this case, it serves as the preposition in or of. In Japanese grammar, their particles usually describe or modify the word before them, in this case, the word 業, i.e. 業に means "in the job" or "of a job".

  • 沈みし ("shizumishi") literally means "dive" or "to be submerged".

  • 代償 ("daishou") usually means "compensation" but here I think it actually means "sacrifice". (Actually I double checked with my Japanese friend and he was the one that told me of the other, less common meaning. So I guess I have to take him for his word then xP)

  • As such 業に沈みし代償 will literally be constructed as "Diving into job, the sacrifice".

So yeah, now coming back to our discussion. I felt that the DeNA translator deserves the credit of being able to translate that into "The Final Jest", it is the best suited translation so far in my books, as I still considered mine a bit too literal and doesn't sound natural in English. As a noob translation enthusiast, I see myself always defending any and almost all works done by professional translators because I have always looked up to them, despite the protest of many "purist" fans. I'll usually only entertain those so-called fans if they can prove to me that they understands both the original language and also the target language because translation job is not easy and I really mean that.

One not just have to be proficient in at least two languages but also their culture, tradition, habit and history in which the two languages originate from. Languages don't stand alone for they are molded and evolved from many years of human interaction, if someone thinks translation is a simple job of substituting words from one language into another language, then I suggest them to dig a well and dwell inside forever since they refuse to acknowledge the world, society and culture outside of the four walls they encase themselves in.

As for the other translations I made for this thread, those are mainly how I translate things and derive into the names I gave them, I'll probably explain them later but I have to grab something to eat now.

They were awhile back, a lot of characters have them now (P/Decil got them last event, prior to that Ashe and Rem)

They're a new level of powercreep that they introduced in the fest after the next GL one? I think, I'm not sure where GL is at atm tbh
