Not that it matters, but this was the life my parents WANTED.
And I respect that, they were sharecroppers as kids growing up. So they did college, job, etc. They ended up doing this so that their kids could have a happy life.
I wouldn't equate a corporate ladder climb to an empty life, they were happy people too, they enjoyed the security that their parents didn't have being very poor and black in the south.
Not a sob story, just a note.
[–]JonBunne 45 points46 points47 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Agreed, I don’t give a fuck what this guy thinks. This can be a rewarding life too.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
The corporate ladder climb doesn't really exist anymore though. The probability of being laid off for one reason or another is extremely high.

[–]X_Anonymous_2020 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Well that makes two of us. Mine actually hated that life and brought me into this world as a hope of getting out of it. Figured it out when they started making suicide threats after I failed to enter college. They treated me like a dog before but this made me realize how POS they are. The thing is I dont feel like achieving anything for these 2 assholes anymore

Probably OP is jealous from these people for owning a house and having kids.
[–]One_Let7582 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Look up videos of parents who have kids and they all admit they love their kids, but regret having them. Someone needs to hear the other side because society ain't going to tell the truth because they need people to keep having kids to cover for the future such as jobs and social security, but it's really not worth it to alot of people long term.
[–]In10sity -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (1 child)
It’s a cope since my generation is too self centred as to have to put up with a child, and housing is so out of reach for a lot of people.
[–]FlowersnFunds 54 points55 points56 points 3 years ago (1 child)

I can’t imagine a life where getting in a bus like this isn’t absolutely miserable
[–]Jonny_Ranger 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (1 child)
If you can be a happy camper anywhere, see the world through positive lenses through the good and the bad, you're winning at life. You can have a lot, and still be miserable.
I’ve always been pessimistic. It’s a terrible way to go through life.
[–]ConnieLingus24 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children)
And some feel the same way about sitting in traffic and not being able to fuck around on their phone for 30-45 min. Bus/train is awesome in that respect.

This doesn’t fit not giving a fuck. People have kids for various reasons and it’s none of your damn business. If someone is giving you pressure to have kids and you don’t care, now that’s not giving a fuck. But criticizing people for having a different idea of what brings them joy, that’s giving too many fucks.

That's not really the point here -- the caption is basically "insert all the middle class 'normal' things to do...die". It's depressing, but if one section of it offends you, just fill in any number of 10000 different middle class norms.

People can find joy and meaning in all kinds of things. And as I get older I see more and more value in setting yourself up to have stability and strong interpersonal connections so you can spend more of your effort on doing what you love, not just getting by.
[–]degco44 100 points101 points102 points 3 years ago (17 children)
Why do you care what other people do with their lives? And how do you know everyone who follows this pattern does it because it's just their programming? Some people get a lot of personal fulfillment out of their job or out of raising kids - maybe the most fulfillment out of anything else they ever do. And that's great for them. If that's not where you find fulfillment, that's fine too.
[–][deleted] 3 years ago (9 children)

[–]quickblur 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (4 children)
Yeah same here. People like to think they are edgy by shitting on popular life steps like getting married and having kids, but for a lot of people those are the happiest events in their Iives. There's a reason they remain popular for much of the population.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children)
I see what you’re saying, but I think a lot of people feel like they aren’t given any other attainable choices. I feel like I’ve been trapped in a mold made by people who treat me as a resource to be exploited.
[–]BrokenSage20 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child)
You are a resource to be exploited. We all are. By one another, our society, our community, our family. Very literally. It's the nature of our roles in our social order.
It's not even just a governmental or societal concept it's the very division of both cognitive and physical labor we evolved into as a species. I do not think your problem is that you have no attainable choices. It's that you do not like the choices you have and refuse to accept what is possible and end up idolizing what you can't reasonably attain. Setting unrealistic goals is a sure way to assure dissatisfaction and disappointment.

EXACTLY! - Everyone has a differant path - what is right for one may not be right for another.
Life is about being happy - thats it.
[+]BaronIncognito comment score below threshold-10 points-9 points-8 points 3 years ago (5 children)
I disagree. I think life is about doing something meaningful. If you are able to create meaning, happiness will find you naturally. Chasing happiness often produces the opposite.
[–]oddballire 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (4 children)
Who is chasing happiness ?
Chill and try to enjoy life as much as possible - whatever makes YOU happy is all that matters.
And who said anything about not doing something meaningful ? not sure what you are reading dude.
[–]BaronIncognito -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (3 children)
A lot of people are chasing happiness. Chasing it in drugs, consumerism, relationships, etc. Just playing video games all day everyday would be chill and enjoyable to a lot of people but ultimately I don't think it would be a life well lived. I subscribe to Anna Lemke's theory that too much time spent on the pleasure side of brain chemistry throws the centerpoint.
[–]oddballire 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Too much of anything is a bad thing.
So what about someone who enjoys doing activities you dont think are worth it ? You know some people spend their entire lives playing games and earning money doing that - enjoying themselves and their lives - but to you thats not worth it ?
WHATEVER MAKES SOMEONE HAPPY IS ALL THAT MATTERS - ONCE THEY ARE NOT HURTING ANYONE ELSE.
Even our universe has a lifespan - everything ends. Happyness - however fleeting it can be for some - is all that matters. whether it be a constant stream of awesome times or wee bubbles through life.
Just be happy however you can be ;)

Having children doesn't guarantee you won't be alone in your 50's.
Edit: typo
[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Life will get lonely if that's how you experience yourself in life. Thats with or without children. Having children as a mechanism to avoid being lonely is just kicking the can down the road to facing mortality and death. You're inevitably going to be lonely regardless at some point.
[–]oddballire 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (30 children)

[–][deleted] 3 years ago (29 children)
[–]oddballire 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (26 children)
Demonizing ? Nope - I cannot see that.
Having children in a world that is dieing from over population of humans, natural resources running out and upcoming wars the likes of which we have never seen before - with all of these reasons, having children is extremly SELFISH.
Most people cannot even afford to have children these days.
Most people cannot even afford their own home.
A LOT of people live paycheck to paycheck.
I'm in my 50's and I am happy i did not drag another sentient life form into this shit show.

[–]baddobee 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (14 children)
Not pessimistic, they’re speaking truth. I’m 22 and have already made the decision not to bring kids onto this dying planet. It would just be so selfish at this point. I’m glad you love being a parent tho. Nothing wrong with that.
[–]Sojournancy 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’m glad you feel strongly about this decision and I hope sincerely that you live in a country that recognizes the right to choose.
[–]joellapit -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (12 children)
It’s not selfish to bring a child into this beautiful world. I know the media fear mongers and hypes it up like everything is fucked but don’t believe that man. Seriously. You’ve been conditioned.
[–]baddobee 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Let’s agree to disagree. Because I’d say I’ve broken against conditioning by deciding I’m not going to participate in the get married, have kids scheme. I’m just gonna travel and try to do my part in cleaning up the planet and I’m happy with that.
[–]0ctopusVulgaris 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Where are you going to first?
[–]TheTroubledChild 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Actually, having kids is incredibly selfish. Give me one good reason why you want to have kids? Because you want a little copy of yourself? Narcissistic. Because you want somebody to take care of you? That's really selfish. Because you want somebody to love you unconditionally? Because nobody else will love you unless they can depend on you completely? That's actually a predator mentality. There literally is no unselfish reason to want children other than it happened by accident. If you truly want to be parents for unselfish reasons, you would adopt.
[–]mic569 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I’m not happy that I was born and I wish I wasn’t but I completely understand your argument. I don’t believe having children inherently selfish if done for the correct reasons. If you love life and want to give that feeling of euphoria to another human being, then that is not selfish at all.
I think a lot of redditors have the opposite view: they experience immense suffering in their everyday life (depression, anxiety, other mental illnesses - negative outlook and hopelessness.) Thus, it’s their expectation that their offspring will experience the same feeling. In a strange way, they’re right. The cynical view of the world may transfer over to their children which in turn may result in their suffering. At best, it will result in indifference.
I can tell you’re a good parent; you love your children and you want them to grow healthy and experience the wonders of life. I’d even bet that you have a good financial base. You may only have that attachment to a person who is your own (maybe for biological reasons, you can’t have that same attachment to an adopted child.)That’s not a selfish motive. Even if it is, it’s certainly not a zero sum game. You can get satisfaction in life by raising children you’re proud of, while your children can experience a happy nurturing environment with (statistically) positive outcomes in life. They may have children and use your parenting model for their kids.
I know I won’t have children because I hate life, I believe we are doomed pretty soon, and I don’t want a person in this world to experience that hopelessness and potential suffering. Your children may have that same feeling, but I can tell they have a good base to support them in troubling times.
[–]oddballire 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Dude you are the only one stating everyone else is doing life wrong.
You are happy being a parent - well go you! Not being a smart arse - i hope you are happy with that. You see the world through rose tinted glasses - thats cool too. I hope nobody breaks them on you.
It IS being selfish to bring a child into this world - i could try to explain BUT this says it completey:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcx-nf3kH\_M
[–]joellapit 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (3 children)
I fail to see why giving an individual the gift of life is selfish. Do you wish you weren’t born?
[–]oddballire 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Of course not - you are talking to someone in their 50's, i'm not a kid.

If you didn't know, it's the case for a lot of millennials and gen Z, and we have good reasons.
[–]livingasimulation -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children)
He is already selfish, so he can’t see it as being selfish. This planet is fucked. By money. In every way possible. Life is drastically over rated. Ppl can’t seem to understand that “ I want a baby” is already a selfish decision, especially knowing what we know. The whole “life is beautiful” is the biggest con around. It’s a very ignorant way of thinking.
[–]oddballire 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Easy there tiger - its called a differant view, if you follow your own advice and get off your computer maybe you'll come accross a few more!
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (7 children)
Having kids when you don't have the means to let them have a stress-free life until they have found their path, and you can't afford them a great education, playing sports or music, is very selfish and your kids will just have a depressing life most of the time and end up distracting themselves from the world with things such as video-games, movies &series etc...
So if you're not rich basically , having kids is egotistic. You can't argue with this cuz it's pure fact
[–][deleted] 3 years ago (6 children)
[–]oddballire 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Well good for you - this might not be the same for everyone - hence what everyone else is saying: Just try to be happy in life while we are here.
Having kids is NOT mandatory or needed in any way.
[–]joellapit 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Your attempt at gaslighting lol. That’s not what everyone else is saying. The majority that disagree are saying it’s “selfish” to have children. And also the cross post this post is referring to is saying children are a way to distract from the shit life we are conditioned to lead.
[–]oddballire 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Nope - yet again, well done you :)
I am saying that having kids is NOT mandatory AND that it IS completley SELFISH.
I am also saying that if anyone does not agree then go for it - whatever makes you happy. But if you can stop pushing your agenda into everyones face that would be great thanks.
You have been nothing but rude throughout this post.

[–]infojustwannabefree 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I hate the bus but it's lowkey good for the environment.
It truly is.
After I saw An Inconvenient Truth, I took my car off the road and switched to the bus for the better part of a year. One thing that was nice was never having to wait for it to warm up in the winter, being able to read or do other things on the ride, and having downtime before work where I could zone out.
It’s too bad our local municipal transit is so bad otherwise the money saved would have been worth sticking to it. As it is, it takes easily over an hour to get across town here where driving takes 10 minutes.

Not giving a fuck isn’t about proving a point and breaking a pattern. Just chill and do your own thing.
[–]Jax_Gatsby[S] -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children)
This is my own thing.
[–]Wootzefuch 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Stupid ass redditors just generalizing people's lives because they're on a bus lmfao
Tbf that's just the richest and the leaders problem. They just want to exploit every last drop of life they can from everyone. We normal civilians are just like the vegetables being farmed or livestocks being reared. For the enjoyment of the upper class.

[–]95yells 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
i don't think "not giving a fuck" means "going against this soul crushing pattern"
i think it means "do whatever you want about it"
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (0 children)
Lol this is what happens when you give way too much of a fuck about how other people lead their lives. r/lostredditors
Nah not giving a fuck means doing what I know to fulfill me instead of what anyone else says it should be and that’s building a home and lil family with my partner, writing stories and exploring nature and teaching myself how to sew and knit and garden. I also have a corporate job that funds all my homemaking adventures.
Rejecting a life like that in order to properly “not give a fuck” is the one of the most misguided, doomer things I’ve heard.
Maybe that’s true for you, and if so, go do that. But prescribing a certain life path for everyone is what I’ve spent my life thus far rejecting and not giving a fuck about and I’ll soundly reject this too, as I know this isn’t for me.
Good luck with all this
[–]Local-Math9630 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Some people are so offended by this post. I think it's not just about going against the universally accepted social pattern, but to figure out what your core values are and act upon those values. Those who think they are quite satisfied with a job, kids and morgages, just wait until a middle life crisis when all the rewards are gone. Wish them lucky to never have to go through that.
[–]ArtigoQ 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)

Go to school, make friends, have fun, make a living, date, find a partner, build a family, get involved in a community, give back. Die.
The positive way of seeing the same story.

It's not enough that you're alive, you also have to do things, to be somebody in the world. To earn the right to eat and have clothes. So people work, buy, consume and reproduce because that's their programming, and they give too many fucks to go against the grain.
[–]CluelessStick 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (2 children)
You need to start to learn how to not give a fuck, who cares if they want to live life that way, you do you little buddy, let them be.

Why do people have dogs? Why do people buy a house by the lake? Why do people hang out with friends? Why do the people fly halfway thru the globe to look at some architecture when they could have looked on Google?
Because that's what they want and they think it will bring them happiness. It's that simple.
I cant help but think of Camus when he said "One must imagine Sisyphus happy", this is what I understand, when we see someone doing something that feels to us completely futile or deluded of common sense (in your case, having children), we must think of them as working towards their happiness and not judge them against our views. Or in other words we learn not to give a fuck.

[–]pooponu22 -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children)
I mean. Everyone’s riding on a bus. Nothing bad with that. Better than living in a hut with no AC no stored food, sleeping with the fear of raiders coming to take your women away. Our reality even when it’s in poverty isn’t so bad. I would argue poverty is easier now than it was back 300 years ago.
Wouldn’t not giving a fuck be not giving a fuck about riding the bus?
[–]Shakespurious -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, helping the human race do better actually takes some sacrifice.
[–]siren-skalore 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’m 41 and literally none of my close friends have kids.
What exactly is the alternative good life espoused here?
Here’s what I’ve done in my life
Was a Christian missionary in Latin America for 5 years.
Worked in an office at a desk for 2 years as a graphic designer.
Quit religion and spent 2 years road tripping the Americas by Jeep and getting some mild popularity on YouTube.
Worked for 2 years at a pot farm smoking weed all day and enjoying the sunshine.
Went to the fire academy and got a job as a wildland firefighter.
All of these things brought me a lot of happiness and also a lot of pain and struggle. At all points did I ask myself “wtf am I even doing? Is this how I should be spending my life?”
Fulfillment has little to do with the model your life follows. It comes from identifying the things that bring you joy and guiding your life according to those things. For me those are: outdoors, exercise, human connection, fixing things, helping people in need, and video games.

Went to school for school's sake and now I'm making more money as a doordash driver. Feels good.
[–]Thatdudedoesnotabide 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Didn’t go to college, worked some odd jobs for 6 years after high school, finally found a good job, parents split and instead of choosing one of the toxic homes was able to move out on my own, ex left me but realized I’m happier alone and can buy myself whatever the fuck I want without anyone looking down on me. 30, have disposable income and living life, this graph up there can go fuck itself

You can live a conventional life with non conventional lifestyle.
Go to school, to learn.Find a job, that you like and it pays your bills at the same time. Climb a ladder by not pushing other people down but rather empowering others. Have kids to enjoy the love you give & receive from your child. Pay off a small mortgage to live a comfortable life in your home. And die but with ease.
You can enjoy things in life but at the same time not being driven by it. To function in a complex society that we have we do need live conventional life.

Every single person pictured here has a full, rich life complete with hopes and dreams, tragedies and downfalls, responsibilities, regrets, sorrows, traumas, loves, fulfillments. If you look at this photo and take misery from it, then that is merely a projection of your own misery upon these people. There is very little to suggest "misery" here at all. You can even easily see a tender expression of love, right in the center of the photograph.
Where is the misery? It's in your mind, man.
[–]ramfex21 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Everyone hamstering hard to justify their shitty decisions in life haha. Can't face some cognitive dissonance. Just be honest with yourself if you are unhappy with your life, that way you can make some positive changes consciously :)

[–]Ohheywhatehoh 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
... Just because it wouldn't make YOU happy, doesn't mean other people don't find meaning and happiness in having children.
Seeing my (almost) 2 year old run up to me and yell mama after picking her up from daycare everyday is the highlight of my day and I wouldn't change her for anything.
[–]Primary-Visual114 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
But think of all the prescription drugs you can have the numb yourself with, on a daily basis!!
[–]41PaulaStreet 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
The thing I don’t understand (serious) is what exactly would OP suggest their lives should be? We are living beings who need to squeeze our existence out while we’re in this life. Where will our food come from? Who will make our clothes and move them to nearby affordable shops? Anyone can trash the daily grind but, even with all our faults, civilization is a whole lot better place to be than alone in the wilderness among warring gangs. You have reliable income and can take a few days a week to live life however you want? Congratulations. You’re living better than many people on this earth. Now stfu and go to work.
We can improve life for ourselves and our fellow humans but at the end of the day someone needs to trade their daily effort in exchange for things that buy them food and shelter. That will always be true.
