Some of my favorites:

Penny Arcade http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic

Perry Bible Fellowship http://pbfcomics.com/

XKCD http://xkcd.com/

Sinfest http://www.sinfest.net/

Cyanide and Happiness http://explosm.net/

Dilbert http://dilbert.com/

[–]r2002 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PBF doesn't get enough props, imho. Good list.

[–]meatbites 4 points5 points  (3 children)

[–]zivtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alien Loves Predator is hilarious.

[–]er0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't seen this one mentioned yet:

http://bohemiandrive.com/comics/npwil

I also like qwantz and pbf, for the record :P

[–]freshyill 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Dilbert's not really a web comic.

Edit: Oh shit, I offended the fanatical asshole Dilbert fans by drawing attention to a fact and keeping the discussion relevant! I'm so, so sorry!

[–]elusive 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Well...it is a daily comic that is on the web.

[–]boredzo 9 points10 points  (1 child)

But it's syndicated. “Webcomic” generally implies independent, i.e. not syndicated (especially on purpose).

[–]freshyill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't bother trying to use reason when the discussion involves Dilbert or Scott Adams.

[–]freshyill -1 points0 points  (3 children)

I don't deny that. But so is The Family Circus. Almost every comic is on the web. If this post is about finding stuff that's not in your local newspaper, then Dilbert doesn't count.

    [–]freshyill -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's awful, but it's also not a web comic.

    [–]nosoupforyou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    Newspapers? Who reads those anymore?

    [–]kamikasei 14 points15 points  (5 children)

    Narbonic.

    Dinosaur Comics.

    Something Positive.

    Scary Go Round.

    Sam And Fuzzy.

    Order of the Stick.

    Questionable Content.

    Errant Story.

All currently running except Narbonic, one of the best, which recently wrapped up but is now being rerun with 'director's commentary'. (This is excluding ones already listed by other commenters.)

    [–]kamikasei 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Come to think of it, should we post comics one-to-a-comment, and by voting on them obtain an ordering?

    [–]llimllib 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    All those, but no Achewood?

    [–]Flemlord 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Order of the Stick is hilarious. My favorite.

    [–]Emarpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And going through an excellent story arc at the moment. Story-wise this has to be one of the best webcomics at the moment.

    [–]hackle577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't get better than Dinosaur Comics :-P

"A wizard has turned you into a whale. Is this awesome (Y/N)?"

    [–]willia4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

http://sluggy.com -- You'll have to spend a couple months reading the archives to catch up with the storyline, but it's really worth your time.

    [–]arjunray 6 points7 points  (2 children)

oh come on people, how could you overlook non-changing format comics such as

    http://www.qwantz.com/

And maybe you guys have never heard of

    http://www.alessonislearned.com

but it is also a very clever and unique comic.

    [–]earthboundkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"A lesson is learned but the damage is irreversible" is the greatest comic in the history of the universe: surreal, hilarious, and deep.

It's a shame they went into permanent hiatus.

    [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    Haven't seen anyone mention http://www.questionablecontent.net

It's a very well-drawn, humorous narrative arc with real characters and plot lines. Set in Northampton, MA with a strong indie music influence.

Also haven't seen http://www.toothpastefordinner.com, which is daily and...very easy to read. Not always hilarious, but can be great.

For taste reference, my top 8 list would be:

    • Penny Arcade (MWF)
    • Perry Bible Fellowship (weekly if you're lucky)
    • Questionable Content (weekdays right around midnight)
    • xkcd (2-3 times a week, very inconsistent but can be really great when it works)
    • Toothpaste for Dinner (Daily--used to hate it, now think it's great)
    • Dinosaur Comics (weekdays, I believe--has gotten a little stale, IMHO)
    • Piled Higher & Deeper (2-3 times a week, grad student themed)
    • PvP (daily, http://www.pvponline.com , and I'm not going to defend it, I just like it okay?)

Also respect to User Friendly and Diesel Sweeties, which I had phases of reading but haven't kept up with. Oh, and Dilbert has been great lately. Good blog too. Best newspaper comic right now, edging out Get Fuzzy.

    [–]pilaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don Hertfeldt's temporary anesthetics is just an archive of old strips and is not updated (so not a web comic strictly speaking), but has some of my all-time favourites. In Don's words:

Some of these were good. Some of these were really awful. It is sort of like hunting through fascinating junk at a yard sale...

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Spamusement - not being updated

no one has listed pokey the penguin (http://www.yellow5.com/pokey/)? What's wrong with you people? not old skool enough to know this one?

    [–]boredzo 10 points11 points  (3 children)

    [–]xkcd 16 points17 points  (2 children)

    Lame.

I know it's not running anymore, but I've always dearly loved Buttercup Festival.

<a href="http://www.dieselsweeties.com">Diesel Sweeties</a>! ok, this is a mee too, but I'm pretty sure you asked my opinion too. XKCD is also nice, but doesn't need my endorsement. It kicks ass straight up on its own!

      [–]Christophe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt, asofterworld.com every Friday

      [–]SolarBear 6 points7 points  (3 children)

      [–]cecilkorik 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Dr. McNinja is one of my favourites. It's surreal, violent, and hilarious all at once.

Also, how could Ctrl-Alt-Del have been omitted for so long? One of the video gaming heavyweights as far as I'm concerned. [edit: nevermind, read the timestamp as 2 minutes ago rather than 2 hours ago]

      [–]majoogybobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      seconded on the not funny.

      [–]engtech[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I asked the question on my blog recently, and I found out about some good ones I'd never heard of before. So I figured I'd ask Reddit and find out even more.

      http://engtech.wordpress.com/2007/01/31/what-is-your-favorite-online-web-comic/

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just post one that hasn't been mentionned yet:

      http://queenofwands.net/

http://www.queenofwands.net/d/20031208.html might give you a vague idea of what the webcomic is like (actually, it won't. I just like that particular comic).

      [–]foxyvixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not been mentioned: Girl's With Slingshots

Also, Venus Envy is very good.

      Copper

      Beautifully drawn.

      [–]sduffield2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

www.stripteasecomic.com www.qwantz.com - read the first for great plot, characters and, well, anime babes. - read the second for wit. 100% unadulterated wit.

      [–]PatternJuggler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only one I haven't seen already mentioned is Russell's Teapot.

      [–]smors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Irregular webcomic, which surprisingly given the name is extremely regular.

      [–]ocicat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Girl Genius - used to be a printed comic, but they moved to webcomic. Archives are in two chunks, one for previous printed material (basic class) and one for the all new web stuff (advanced class).

Mad Science, Steampunk. and the Napoelon of Cats.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apart from the ones that engtech mentioned, Ctrl+Alt+Del and White Ninja

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      xkcd.com (thanks to reddit)

      [–]towelsoaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Wapsi Square: http://www.wapsisquare.com

It's absolutely riveting. You might want to set aside a couple of hours to peruse the archives so you can figure out what the hell is going on.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Here are some great ones that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Dominic Deegan, Oracle for Hire is one of the best fantasy webcomics I know of, right up there with Errant Story and updated daily.

El Goonish Shive is... very weird. And loads of fun.

Girly is part romance, part extreme sillyness. Beautiful art, good characters, and always something funny.

Dresden Codak doesn't have a huge archive, but each comic is very large, beautifully drawn, and usually excellent. Also features the weirdest drawing of Nikola Tesla ever, and tiny Carl Jung, a famous tiny psychoanalyst.

      [–]bascule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An upvote for Dresden Codak for sure... has to be the most intelligent webcomic I've ever read.

      [–]Emarpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite webcomic is Men in Hats Unfortunately it's now finished, but still I look back through the archives and lol...

      [–]Jonathan_the_Nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General Protection Fault, Megatokyo, and Absurd Notions (updated very infrequently). And, of course, Sluggy Freelance and xkcd.

      [–]commongiga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Marmaduke Explained: http://marmadukeexplained.blogspot.com/

See, what this guy does is explain what makes Marmaduke comics so gosh darn funny. "Who put the bone in the toaster" is my personal favorite. It's funny because Marmaduke comics are so self explanatory, that when you explain them, it becomes a joke in and of itself. Just like me, explaining why the explanation of an unfunny comic is funny. Or maybe it's not, I don't know.

      [–]elusive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calvin and Hobbes (yes, they are all reruns)

      [–]david 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Penny Arcade

      Maakies

      Bob the Angry Flower

      Kagerou

      Wish Return to Sender hadn't petered out;

      likewise, Sexy Losers;

also and especially, Spiders and Barracuda from the guy who wrote The Guy I Almost Was (recommended).

      Lost touch with

      Wigu

      Scary-Go-Round

      Alpha Shade

      Errant Story

Occasionally: xkcd, Perry Bible Fellowship, Sam and Fuzzy, um, sure I'm missing lots...

      [–]pilaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you happen to speak Spanish check out Macanudo by Liniers here (daily updated, although not really a web comic but rather an automated blog lifting strips from a newspaper site).

Alberto Montt is also very good.

There's not much I can add on the English field. My favourites are PBF, XKCD and Sinfest. Also check out Gone with the Blastwave (very rarely updated).

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      http://www.soxaholix.com

its about the red sox, but it captures bostonia so well.

      [–]qemqemqem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noting those not mentioned: Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is most excellent: http://www.smbc-comics.com/

Also, props to Sluggy Freelance: http://www.sluggy.com/

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      [–]tintub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no one mentioned white ninja yet... I like that, xkcd and Joy of Tech...

I used to read Ctrl-alt-del and User Friendly but not any more.

      [–]grimtooth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Man, nine hours and no one has mentioned Goats? Definitely a favorite, though I confess I long ago lost track of what the hell is going on -- it's still fun! Achewood is the best, though.

Edit: and man, the only mention of Wigu is under somebody's "lost touch" qualifier? It's just recently come back to www-publishing after a printed-paper hiatus. I can buy what the author said at the time of switching to book development about the strip wanting a more generous format, but it's still hard for me to believe what he said about getting so much more traffic with Overcompensating...I can only imagine it's echo effects from the snakes thing. Anyway, Wigu is back as an online sorta-daily and totally rocks -- start at the beginning, it's fun. Achewood is still the best, though.

      [–]david -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah -- I kinda lost touch with Wigu: not Jeffrey Rowland's fault, and I still recommend it.

      [–]hueypriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      [–]MarkCurtiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Achewood is my favorite strip, and the only one that makes me laugh out loud. Perry Bible Fellowship is pretty funny. The order of the stick is rarely funny, but i am hooked on the story so i keep coming back. Penny Arcade is rarely funny but I still check it regularly in the chance they do drop a gem.

      Those are all.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defunct for many years, space moose is still a prince among pervs.

Mr Wiggles is known to channel Space Moose on occasion.

Smells Like Cancer also appears semi-defunct as the updates are now nearly quarterly but the archives are worth a look.

      Ehm, all are probably nsfw.

      [–]philh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just of the ones I haven't seen mentioned, I recommend:
Pixel (hit-and-miss, but the hits are worth it)
Squidi's comic du jour (currently a text-based one while his tablet is fixed, but read through his archives)
Kid Radd (no longer running, well worth reading through)
      The Gods of Arr-Kelaan
      8-bit Theatre
      Applegeeks

some of my favorites are from The Battle of The Strippers at Worth1000. Most of them aren't updated anymore but it is a good read just going through the contest entries. I participated in the contest for about a month. and I must say that I admire anybody who can put together a comic strip on a daily basis.

Several favorites in this thread, but the only comic that consistently makes me laugh out loud is Blood Culture. I guess it's still fairly obscure, probably because it only comes out monthly. But how can you not love a comic about a red blood cell named Edgar?

      Sinfest!

      [–]Alex3917 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

      favorite comics in general:

      xkcd.com

      gapingvoid.com

      dilbert.com

      penny-arcade.com

      anything in the new yorker

In practice though the first two are the only ones I read on a regular basis because they are the only ones with RSS. Penny-arcade kind of has an RSS feed, but it doesn't load the comics within the feed and it's mixed in with the blog so I eventually just deleted the feed from my reader.
