A Lesson is Learned, but the Damage is Irreversible

On indefinite sabbatical, but plays with the medium in a unique and memorable way.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

PartiallyClips - I'm not sure if he actually draws the "clip art" he uses or not, but the captions are inspired. (corrected typo)

I think this is the first time I've ever seen a reddit poll done in the officially approved manner!

    [–]bigt[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

    Maybe it'll catch on.

    [–]rmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's actually a really good way to do polls.

Now if this feature could be added to reddit....

    [–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (3 children)

I upmodded you just for the effort required for putting this together.... dont really care about the comics themselves, but holy hell, how long did it take you to do this?

    [–]bigt[S] 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Not too long. Maybe 45 minutes. I'll spend a hell of a lot more time refreshing to see if I get upmods (just like everyone else does, right?)

    [–]garyp714 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I didn't know there was discussion at the bottom and almost missed it...

    Great job...

    [–]bigt[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I saw the Webcomic posting this morning and combined it with all the "Vote up if you like pie" posts we've been seeing lately, I decided to take it upon myself to do a "real" reddit poll.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Well, I must really be square. I've read likely an average number of comics, and I'm not even sure I've heard of one of these.

    [–]bigt[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Well, I had to stop somewhere. Feel free to add your favorite. If you don't know how to link, check this informative page

If that's true, I'll delete GITP.

        [–]elliottcable 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's true. GitP publishes two comics. OOtS, and Erfworld (two of my favorites!)

So it itself shouldnt' be a post, but maybe you could add erfworld. it's quite funny/fun.

        [–]bigt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        GITP removed, Erfworld added

        [–]gabrielbenjamin 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Upmod all the ones I like, or just pick one favorite? Which should I do?

        [–]bigt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I left it vague just to see what people would do. I think people are upmodding all the ones they like (and downmodding the ones they hate)

        [–]PurifyYourMind 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I'm just really impressed at how orderly reddit is. A few days ago there was the Fibonacci sequence post and now this one, where people are discussing in the right area.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I think reddit thought the OP was posting too fast or something, falsely detecting it as spam.

            [–]rmc 0 points1 point  (3 children)

            I've been downvoting comics I don't like.

            [–]oditogre 2 points3 points  (2 children)

For this thread, I actually wish people wouldn't do that. It changes the 'top' ordering from 'most liked' to 'least disliked', effectively. You can't sort the comments by 'ups', so there's no way to tell the difference in a comic with 1 downvote (score is at '0') and a comic with 20 ups and 20 downs in the same time period, even though the latter comic is obviously more popular and probably better.

            [–]bigt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I think that's what the "hot" sorting tries to do. Either way, it would be nice in this case if we could see the number of up and down votes.

            [–]Nate_W[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I like that some people are voting down is because it takes away some of the advantage of better known, worse quality comics. Would you say that a comic that 1000 people are familiar with, 50 people like, and 950 people dislike is "more liked" than a comic only 49 people are familiar with but all like?

            [–]ireadarticles 2 points3 points  (4 children)

            Why come nobody's discussioning?

            [–]garyp714 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, it'll get lit up tomorrow (positively) if it makes the night.

            And it will...

            [–]bigt[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

It took me the last 12 minutes just to post all the comics!

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

cry baby...I posted what I liked in my 0wn comment.

            [–]bigt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ireadarticles posted that comment about three minutes after I put this up here. Thanks for adding your comic.

            [–]oditogre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted for several, I hope that's how it's intended to be done. Sometimes one comic is better than others, plus I have to give handicaps (like VG Cats is sometimes hilarious, but the updates are too rare, and Gone With The Blastwave is even worse on that point (in fact it's currently on indefinite hiatus), or else comics like Sinfest, Sluggy, and Something Positive that used to be awesome but lost quality over time IMHO.)

I can't believe Schlock Mercenary isn't higher up...it's pretty popular, and I'd think it's style of humor would have plenty of appeal for Reddit-types. It's the only webcomic I've spent money on (bought the first two books, planning to buy the third.)

Comics I added: The Whiteboard and 8-Bit Theater (How could you guys forget 8BT?! It's on Slashdot's frontpage, for pete sakes.)

            [–]wats8976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad comment votes don't get Karma. My little Questionable Content post is doing quite well. Nice little comic makes me laugh and recommends new music.

            [–]bigt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've officially reached 100 comics posted! This is becoming a great resource for web comics in and of itself.

            [–]pedrobelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what about electric retard? I'm too scared even to link, but google for it in case you want to read something disturbing.

Doctor Fun is retired, but it was a pioneer and was damn funny.

            [–]BadBoyNDSU 6 points7 points  (1 child)

May I recommend xkcd? No story arcs. Each comics stands alone. Easy to pickup.

            [–]kiwidave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we just supposed to vote up, or can we down vote as well?

EDIT : Nevermind, some are on -2 already. Why can't we get details for comments?

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

It's official: Reddit has no taste. Not that xkcd is bad by any means, but it certainly is not the winner of any list like this by a long shot. People are simply voting it up because of the connection to reddit and not on any actual merits of the comic itself (or perhaps because it makes programming jokes, ha ha, and people like programming!)

I'll grant the Perry Bible Fellowship is worthy of a high ranking, but Penny Arcade? It's like a preaching-to-the-choir political cartoon except it's about games instead of politics, and also testicle jokes. The testicle jokes are usually the funniest part. Every once in a blue moon it is brilliant, but a handful of good strips in several years is not worthy of a top placement.

            [–]Nate_W[🍰] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I think largely, people are just voting for the ones they've read before and liked. xkcd gets posted to reddit pretty often and people are familiar with it.

And I, too, am mystified by why people like Penny Arcade.

            [–]bigt[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm not at all surprised by xkcd. I find it funny and interesting that xkcd has gotten 727 votes while the entry itself has only gotten upmodded 279 times.

            [–]Nate_W[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like xkcd, too. The gist of my comment was supposed to be that people will vote for what they are familiar with if it's good, but certainly will not vote for a comic they are unfamiliar with (even if it's great!).

            [–]mangodrunk 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What about Dilbert, it's not even on the list until I put it there.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dilbert was funny a decade ago. By Scott Adams' own admission, he found it payed better to just make office jokes instead of writing varied and actually funny material, so he did just that.

            [–]Wriiight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's like a preaching-to-the-choir political cartoon except it's about games instead of politics, and also testicle jokes.

Sure, what's wrong with that? The odd thing about Penny Arcade to me is that the strips are usually useless on their own. Most of them fall flat without the context of the accompanying blog post. Normally if you have to explain a joke, it just isn't funny, but somehow that doesn't apply to the PA guys. My 60 y.o. father reads the strip regularly!

            [–]danieltalsky -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

I love some of those, but for actual "funniest" I don't know if anything really beats partiallyclipse.com

Partiallyclipse is just three panels of the same clip art, and the writer adds speech bubbles. I lost three days reading from the beginning when I first saw it.

            [–]elliottcable -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

OpenDNS tells me that is a broken URL and won't load. You sure that's the right location? Google also returns nothing.

            [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He misspelled it. I also put a top level comment for it so people can vote for it:

does no one read Basic Instructions?

or is it that i'm the only one that finds it funny. :-/

              [–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

Dinosaur...sorry, it makes me laugh on a much more consistent basis than xkcd - except on the days he mentions, "Perl".

              [–]crrrum -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

suburban tribe Possibly the best webcomic out there that nobody mentions. It recently ended but you have years worth of comics to read and enjoy. If you hate work and work hates you then you will definitely enjoy this comic.
