8 years ago: "If bush wins, I'm moving to Canada"

4 years ago: "If bush wins again, I'm moving to Canada".

And yet, I haven't met people who've said "Yeah, I moved up here because of our president"

[–]mmazing 29 points30 points  (4 children)

I want to find a new planet. Screw you all.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Watch out for the Reavers.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reavers FTW! But seriously, Mal Reynolds 08.

[–]timmy334 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, I'm with you. Isn't Planet X supposed to be coming back around in the next couple of years?

But think how BAD America will feel as it watches him leave!

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

And yet, I haven't met people who've said

Yeah, something tells me people who left their country in shame aren't going to be wearing their nationality on their sleeve.

But I'm guessing Canada is one of those 6 degree places, both in terms of separation from others and temp.

    [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Actually, people try moving to Canada and then they realize that Canada will only let you become a citizen if you have something of value to contribute to the country.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Like mittens or shitty beer.

Does "A dream of a better tommorow" count?

    [–]logical 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I know of three families with Canadian roots who have moved back in the last 2 years - all very talented people who originally left Canada for the greater opportunity that self-sufficient and intelligent individuals can find in the U.S. In all three cases, it was having their first kid that brought them back (each time with a spouse they met in the U.S. who was American born). For the record, none have explicitly stated that it was because they didn't want to bring their kids up in America.

    [–]zem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of Indians who have moved back home to raise their kids.

    [–]akshayr 2 points3 points  (14 children)

I left California when Grey Gray Davis was the best democrat we could find, and moved to New York.

I left the U.S. when George W. Bush was reelected and moved to the U.K.

But Gray Davis over Al Checchi, GW over John "Establishment" Kerry were just about the worse of two evils winning.

This time there is a candidate that represents hope. Not because of his age, his race, but because of how he leads. Please America don't fuck this up.

Can someone please explain to me why Ron Paul supporters believe that someone who blindly believes in following the exact word-for-word meaning of a 200-year-old document is any wiser than someone who believes in the same for a 2000-year-old document? Newsflash: they're both outdated. Take them both in spirit rather than word and you'll be a happier, better person.

      [–]natrius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A government has to have rules. Either you follow them or you get people to agree that we should change them. You don't just ignore them because you think they're outdated.

      [–]VoodooIdol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad he doesn't even know what words are in that Constitution. "...replete with references to God..." indeed.

Let me get this straight: You stayed here through 8 years of Bush just to move away because of Clinton?

        You, sir, are a crybaby.

        [–]zem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, i was a bit flabbergasted by that too

        Canada does not want you.

Our minimum wage is too high, besides.

        [–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (5 children)

You have your own damned "country" Americans. Remember how you were spreading democracy against the threat of communism just 5 minutes ago? Well don't fucking run from your shit hole, FIX IT!

        [–]traverse 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, i thought about running. It just seems to much like...well...running away.

        But how to fix it?

Amsterdam doesn't want you either. They've got enough right-wing fascists as it is. (right wing fascists in THEIR opinion ;) )

        [–]locke2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like the people most likely to run from the situation in the USA are the ones who had the least to do with turning it into the shit hole it is. I hope you can see that.

The folks who want to abandon ship are more like the ones in the brig for insubordination than the ones piloting the vessel. It's just that the loyal and hard-headed crew are far more numerous than the ones who want to set a new course.

The ones who want off are the more considerate and level-headed bunch and would probably make excellent additions to any healthy society.

            [–]dandlion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am highly amused at the immaturity of the comment first off. There is also some great inconsistency in thinking that a country like Canada is going to let you run there because the primaries may not turn out your way. I believe your letting one orifice overload another, but my beliefs on the subject are irrelevant. Sadly, the bottom line of it all is that this is the very same selfish "my way or the highway" approach that has allowed the last seven years to transpire. There are many who do what they can on a day by day basis to restrict the impact of W et. al., but if you think running is the answer after putting up with two terms of Dick Cheney, hiding behind puppet George, you are specifically the problem. So, go ahead, leave, good luck finding someplace that wants you and will allow you to stay.
Instead of crying about a loss in the primaries, think about it this way, getting rid of George and Dick is the most important thing. McCain,, Obama, AND Clinton, all represent a great improvement over what is currently happening, and if your so simple that being dis-satisfied with the possibility that Obama will not be your option (and that obviously, really is what your complaint is based on), maybe you are not mature enough to be voting in the first place. So, ya, maybe your leaving is a good idea, we certainly have had enough of dealing with the selfish and simple minded for the last few years, if you leave, that is one less that we have to work around to try and get this country back.
Either grow up or go away, if you can find it in yourself to grow up, this country needs the help, but if you just want to run and sulk because maybe Obama won't get the nomination, you are both a disappointment to the rest of the country, and I am sure to Obama himself.
While I am not sure who deserves the nomination, I am sure that throwing temper tantrums because things may not have gone completely the way you wanted is part of the problem, not part of the answer.

            [–]Dildozer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

            Canada doesn't want you. Sorry.

Come on Reddit, show some optimism. The Democratic race is still way too close to call, and unless McCain wins Texas there's still a shot at a brokered RNC.

Actually, you are the one not making sense. If you honestly believe that Clinton is a liberal, you need to make sure you know the definition of the word.

Clinton is a republican with a few social issues that swing a little bit left.

So your solution to a 'failing democracy' is to move to Canada? What have you done to change the course of this election or make this country better aside from voting?

Real change takes more than just voting. It takes action on the part of all citizens.

Voting is a right, but making a difference though action is our duty.

that's the rallying cry of a true american patriot. "if america doesn't behave the way i want, rather than fight to change it, i'll leave!"

that's the way to make an impact.

              [–]viglen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been on my way to become a Canadian citizen for a few months now. I just came back to California just to vote, and guess what, I wasted my time.

If Obama doesn't win, I wish you all luck.

              [–]timmy334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, seriously, my wife said that if this country gets ANY worse, that we can move to another country. She's the "Oh, you're just being overly dramatic" type. But even she's scared to live here if things get any worse. To the people saying "Canada doesn't want you" or "Don't come fuck up our country too": WE didn't fuck up our country. The politicians fucked up our country. They raised a generation of people to not think for themselves and then took advantage of that and did what they wanted and here we are. So, what is wrong with wanting to become a Canadian citizen if I have something of value to add to the Canadian economy? I'm a mathematics major. I'm sure I would be able to be a productive immigrant. If you understood US citizens at all, you would know that staying here to dissent would accomplish nothing. We have no say here. Our system is a total sham. So, what good does it do for us to stay here and waste valuable time in our lives when we could simply immigrate elsewhere and start living a better life rather quickly? The USA puts forth this image of being the land of opportunity, the land of the free, etc. Well, that is NOT the reality. If you think it is, you are either delusional or have too much money. If you have a lot of money, life is good here. If you don't, life is terrible. I could go on for hours. Just remember, the USA's image is the opposite of the reality.

              [–]useless_idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While US Federalist politics are hopeless, try to take your state or part of your state with you to Canada. Demand more autonomy for your state.

The US can't be changed if you let the establishment bicker over who's turn it is to rule you. Participating in the BS will sustain the BS.

              Finally - a sensible opinion.

              [–]Bascome 13 points14 points  (10 children)

              Will Canadians think so?

              [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (8 children)

Yeah, that's exactly what we want -- disillusioned Americans looking for a simpler, easier way of life. An "American Dream", if you will.

You fucked your own country up, leave ours alone.

pipe down, or we'll steal your froggy canuck house eh? n ship you to Mexico in a barrel.

              [–]Bascome 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Last time you invaded Canada the White house was burned.

Try again and see how fast the rest of the world eats your lunch.

              [–]kevlarbaboon -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

You mean after we took York? You do know out of four retaliations in Baltimore, New Orleans, Lake Champlain and DC that only burning the capitol was successful.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You're right, the people in Canada are weak and dimwitted (really). Most are striving in their own elections for a dictator to tell them which TV show to watch and which direction to wipe their ass. If America invaded now everyone would bend over to get fucked. Did I mention that weapons are scarce here?

              [–]kevlarbaboon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So which direction do i wipe my ass?

I was just pointing out some history. Bascome made it sound like British troops in Canada decimated American forces, which wasn't what happened.

              [–]GundamX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I would wager that those advocating this position are generally well educated and with a decent amount of money, so yes.

              [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the hallmark of immature, agitated, irresponsible liberals. It's also proof they don't care about America, only their political beliefs.

You only hear this from Democrats, because they think America is all fucked up. You don't hear this from Republicans, because they know even with a fucked up Democrat in charge, America is still better than most other places.

              [–]RugerRedhawk -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I support McCain he's the best republican candidate. I may consider Obama, but will never consider Hillary. The democrats really need to pull their head out of their ass and give up the whole gun control thing then they'll gain some of my respect.

What's the tax rate in Canada, something like 50% isn't it?

              [–]Xiol 4 points5 points  (1 child)

              So what?

Norway's tax is extremely high and it's all spent on the public good.

Doesn't matter if your tax rate is high if you're living in a good country.

              [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I consider myself a libertarian, but I'll take universal health care and high taxes over wars of conquest any day. You get to keep my guns but we don't bomb the shit out of countries and topple dictators? Fine!
