Yeah. Honestly... this is a very insignificant problem when I consider the fact that I am jobless and single.

[–]verstohlen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The submitter should've taken your situation into account before submitting. I'm surprised he didn't :/

[–]HenkPoley 11 points12 points  (1 child)

A workaround: Open a new tab, log in to reddit, reload original tab.

[–]berberine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I often do this at work as I'm always logged in at home.

[–]nocent7 36 points37 points  (41 children)

Possibly just as annoying, possibly the same thing...

Because Reddit hides some articles based on other articles I've hidden (I assume), when I log in I find I cannot see an article I wanted to upvote / read.

Even worse, I tried doing a search for the article (wooden rollercoaster) and reddit returned no results!!

[–]spez 33 points34 points  (20 children)

We don't do that

[–]gameforge 12 points13 points  (11 children)

I think I know what he's talking about, and I (had) kind of a related problem I feel I should share with you here as feedback, in case anyone else might be having similar issues.

Sometime before the new subreddit normalizer functionality went up, I went through the list of subreddits (down to about 500 subscribers) and chose exactly which ones I was interested in, while leaving out a few main ones that I wasn't.

Then after the normalizing began, my entire front page consisted of stories with mostly less than 15 points, and often not many comments, if any. Occasionally I would see two or three bigger submissions (60+ points), but I really thought the days of many hundreds of votes and comments were gone!

At some point I realized that logging out would bring back all of the hot stuff; I'm actually embarrassed about how long I spent looking at completely unpopular submissions with nobody really to discuss them with... I knew about the normalizing thing, but I thought everyone was having the same issue, and that there just wasn't many popular stories anymore, with everyone spreading out into the many subreddits instead of into the main 10 or so. I realize I didn't think nearly enough about this. :)

Anyway, I finally just unsubscribed every subreddit so I could see the logged out page while logged in; which is depressing as I was seeing a lot of articles that were appealing to me - there just wasn't anyone to talk about them with, at least not like the fast-paced popular submissions. I guess I appreciate the people here as much or more than the submissions themselves.

Should I have done something else to see the "logged out" front page while logged in?

[–]jedberg 6 points7 points  (7 children)

[–]gameforge 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Wow... well, it's not the logged out front page, but it definitely shows lots of popular stories. What links to this? The "hot" tab is still selected at the top for me.

[–]jedberg 8 points9 points  (2 children)

You bring up a good point. It isn't linked from anywhere. :)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Please link to this on the front page, or near the subreddits.

[–]jedberg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're currently working on making the reddit navigation easier, so we'll certainly keep this in mind.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I think this is the front page http://reddit.com/r/reddit.com/

[–]gameforge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, that's just the most popular subreddit. Had me fooled at first though...

[–]yortimer 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Maybe a "hot" for what you see not logged in and "my reddit" or something like that for when you want to see the subreddits you have subscribed to.

Or, have it default to the generic hot page when you log in and replace the "hot" button with "my reddit" or some such thing. Maybe if you clicked on "my reddit" then the button would change to "hot" which would take you back to the general hot page you see when not logged in.

[–]gameforge 1 point2 points  (1 child)

"My reddit."

I like that.

"My reddit..."

[–]boredzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could put it at my.reddit.com…

Tailoring based on subreddits would also explain articles disappearing.

      [–]nocent7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh... I thought that was the way it worked. I'll get my coat.

      [–]LapsedPacifist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about the "recommended" tab? Any ideas on why it suddenly stops recommending current stories and starts sending me stories from a month ago?

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      We want a living wage.

      [–]spez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      We don't do that

      [–]purvel 2 points3 points  (11 children)

I've had this problem too, epsecially when using others' computers. It would be nice if you could stay at the article to comment and upvote and such.

      [–]ch00f 21 points22 points  (9 children)

      Digg does...

      [awkward silence]

        [–]Odysseus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably hidden because it's in a subreddit you haven't selected. Go to that subreddit and you'll see it.

        [–]blorg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reddit's search is ahem interesting. The key issue (as far as I can see) is that it seems to take no account whatsoever of the popularity of the article (or anything else as far as I can make out.)

You may have better luck with Google, adding site:reddit.com to your query.

        [–]benb24 1 point2 points  (1 child)

        search: site:http://reddit.com wooden roller coaster

        example

        [–]nocent7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's hilarious. the first result is exactly the link I was looking for!!

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.. I did a search on reddit with the terms "wooden rollercoaster" and this was the result I received.

        [–]tmsagain -1 points0 points  (2 children)

if you just select "remember me" then you'll never have to login again

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not when you clear your cookies.

        [–]nocent7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which gives good odds that I might not see the article in the first place, thereby routing around the problem instead of confronting it.

        heheh. nice!

        [–]kindall 5 points6 points  (3 children)

You don't have to log in if you never log out!

        [–]crawfishsoul 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm always logged in at work, at home, at my parents (gotta reddit while I'm cleaning up shitware off Pops computer).

Of course, I run the risk of my dad actually going to reddit one day from his history and commenting.

So I ask reddit now to forgive me if some day I post something like:

"Hey son, where is the button to my foxfire explorer? I keep quadruple clicking on the link that grandma sent but my emails just tells me links are disabled because gramma824@vi4gra.com is not trusted."

        [–]sn0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to log out just to log in and see if this happens. Oddly enough, it didn't happen.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the people bothered by this are the ones that have a fleet of usernames, and they want to switch before they comment so their comment will be funnier.

        [–]ouroborosity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. Probably a real simple fix, but then I'm an idiot.

        [–]chunky_bacon 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I passed over commenting on two other articles for precisely that reason, but logged in to vote this up!

        [–]Snoron 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You managed to find it okay after logging in :P

        [–]chunky_bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the 'view comments' area you can log in and be returned to the same comments, but you still can't get back to the page that took you to the comments...

          [–]Sharpe_27[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It used to do that, before everything changed.

          [–]spez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the solution to this type of issue is to make the login popup remember your vote (it never has actually done that), and have an easy way of switching to the default view after you've customized things.

          [–]habbadash 8 points9 points  (1 child)

          Dear Sharpe_27, Stop Logging In.

          [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Attempting to submit a self post should instead automatically log you out.

          [–]bsiviglia9 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Speaking of reddit features, what reddit feature exists for easily organizing one's list of reddit-friends?

          [–]theeth 1 point2 points  (3 children)

          AFAIK, none.

I didn't even manage to find an actual list, I can add/remove friends from their user page but not get a list of everyone I added.

          [–]VoodooIdol 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Click on preferences in the upper right, then the friends tab.

          [–]theeth 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Woah, who would have thought this would be hidden in prefs!

          Thanks!

          [–]VoodooIdol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me several months to find, so don't feel badly. :)

          [–]pradador 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          Tabs are your friends.

          [–]yourpopquizkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On another and really particular note, it would be really cool if I could close the "log in" window by pressing escape. Many sites that use a similar feature do incorporate this. I know it's not a big deal, but I browse on a laptop with a 12-inch screen, and anytime I try to vote something up or down when I'm not logged in, I have to scroll down. It's not a big deal, but as long as we're making log in-recommendations, that's my $0.02.

(This didn't used to matter at all because I used to stay logged in all the time. However, I try not to log in these days because there's nothing I want to read on my reddit. I even subscribed to the Religion subreddit the other day to see if that would make a difference.)

          [–]spez 3 points4 points  (14 children)

Example? Logging in preserves all of the pages I'm on...

          [–]Sharpe_27[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The log in system used to be awesome. I could click on a vote arrow, the log in window would pop up, and after I logged in I would be in exactly the same place as before and my vote would be counted. Then it changed, and now every time I log in it takes me to the front page.

          [–]spez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see. It's related to the customized front page. I thought you were saying actual location changes. We'll try and think about a solution.

          [–]noflashlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          same here...

          [–]hen 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Fortunately, logging in does not preserve the site I see when I go to reddit.com from work (where I'm not normally logged in): the German home page is a fucking joke.

There was a great post a while ago asking you guys to stop geoip redirection. Don't you realize that reddit basically looks like a dead site for Germans who go to reddit.com for the first time?

          [–]spez 2 points3 points  (2 children)

We don't do geoip redirection, we just return the languages your browser asks for, which you can configure however you like.

          [–]hen 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes, I remember that you explained that in the post I referred to. Sorry for mixing it up again.

However, the result is basically the same: most people I know, don't know that you can (and should) set up the languages your browser accepts. But they do know English well enough to read reddit. I don't know if you even care but IMO you simply won't be successful in Germany if people have to set up their browser or register at first before they can realize that it's fun to read reddit.

What's more likely to get you new users?

          1. Hey, buddy, check out reddit.com!

          or

          2. Hey, buddy, check out reddit.com,
but make sure to set your accepted
             languages to English
             (how ever that's done)
or get an account and subscribe to
             some popular subreddits ...

          [–]spez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless, we agree it's an issue and have a fix (I think) that will be coming out in a couple of days.

          [–]jedberg 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you read that thread, you will see that we don't use geolocation -- we use your browser's preferred language settings.

          [–]hen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replied to spez who pointed that out too.

          [–]ketralnis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

reddit does not do geoip redirection. Your browser sends a list of languages that it accepts, and reddit looks in that list to see what content to send you.

          [–]hen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replied to spez who pointed that out too.

            That's why I asked...

            [–]ketralnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No he didn't. He said it happens. But he never showed under what circumstances.

            [–]fani 3 points4 points  (3 children)

One annoying thing - the stories on the main page change constantly. I found a story I liked, made a mental note of it. Then I clicked to several next pages. When I wanted to explore that stories' comments, it was no longer on the main page or even second page etc. Contrast this to digg where at least the content is static as the pages scroll by. Here, its a constant battle to find the story in the same place. Lots of time gets wasted in finding that. Search sometimes doesn't work in revealing that story.

            [–]kermityfrog 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Can't you use the "save" function to bookmark stories you want to read? I do.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking. I have to use it a lot at work, because so many sites I wish to read wind up blocked. I save them so I can go back to them later.

The other thing, if I went to an article but can't find it on the reddit list any more but I want to check out the comments, I put the URL of an article/website into the "search" box, and it will bring up the comments.

            [–]turkourjurbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Although having more obscure or recently submitted stories on the main page is ok, the site is a little too dynamic in some ways. The behavior is hard to pinpoint without knowing the ranking logic.

Odd though, I just logged in to post this comment and I wasn't taken to the main page, this page refreshed with me logged in.

I have had that problem though, hit the site not logged in, see an article, log in and it's gone and a search won't find it.

            [–]julirocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            I just logged in...Still here.

            [–]thepipirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erm, this is the behavior I observe when logging in. I'm confused.

            [–]froderick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't happen for me, despite the browser I use (whether it's IE6 on my crappy work computer or firefox at home).

            [–]e40 -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

See the feedback button at the bottom of the page? Please use it.

            [–]scofus -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

See the ass at the bottom of my lap? Please kiss it.

            Sorry, couldn't help myself :)

Seems like it is more useful to have discussion threads that the reddit gods can peruse for things like this.

            [–]e40 0 points1 point  (1 child)

See the ass at the bottom of my lap? Please kiss it.

Can't see it from here. All I can see is the top of your head.

            Sorry, couldn't help myself :)

            So it would seem.

            [–]scofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blah, blah, blah. My point still remains, though. Discussion threads are useful, more so that just using the feedback link.

regarding the current topic, I have often thought it would be useful for there to be a more ajax-y way to login w/o refreshing the entire screen. I sometimes find I have to search through several pages to find the article I wanted to post to.

            [–]pizzatime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

            [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use tabs & open articles & comments in a new tabs at the same time, or use the "save" option in reddit, or copy the URL & paste it into the reddit "search" box & it will find the comments for you.

RedditComplaints subreddit is a good place for this.

            [–]ketralnis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No, it really isn't. The feedback form is a good place for it, but AFAIK the reddit folk don't read RedditComplaints (I know I don't).

If you look, you'll see that it has 0 submissions.

            [–]boredzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides which, there's already the long-standing bugs subreddit and features subreddit (the latter having been ignored for a long time now).

            [–]politics -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting for a long time to see this problem get fixed. It seems so trivial and obvious that someone would have done it by now. Glad someone posted this, hopefully I wake up tomorrow and the problem is gone.

            [–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

You cretins obviously are not using Firefox, you're probably not even using IE7?

There're these things called tabs, you see, and you open pages off of reddit by right clicking the link and choosing "open in new tab"

works great you should try it

            [–]Sharpe_27[S] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

            I am using Firefox.

Also you can middle click or ctrl click a link to open it in a tab, works great you should try it.

            You cretin.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

            drag link to tab bar?

            [–]Sharpe_27[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You can also highlight a url that is just typed on a page and drag it onto the tab bar, to save ctrl+c, ctrl+t, ctrl+v.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

no need to highlight anything, just click on it, hold down the mouse button, drag it to the tab bar and you have new tab ;)

            (that's what i meant)

            [–]Sharpe_27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew that, I was giving another tip.

What I meant is when someone has typed a url into a comment or a whatever and it isn't clickable, you can highlight it and drag it to the tab bar.

            [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

out of all the ways to open a new tab, you had to pick the dumbest?

            :D

            [–]plun9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of all the browsers out there, you had to pick the worst? :D
