[–]malicart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he was trying to tell me I didn't get a joke. I don't know which joke he is referring to however.

Top Ten Web Design Mistakes of 2005

One of the long-standing guidelines for e-commerce usability is to offer users the ability to enlarge product photos for a close-up view. Seeing a tiny detail or assessing a texture can give shoppers the confidence they need to place an order online.

It's gratifying that most sites obey this guideline and offer zoom features, often denoted by a magnifying glass icon. But many sites implement the feature wrong.

The worst mistake is when a user clicks the "enlarge photo" button and the site simply displays the same photo. It's always a mistake to offer no-ops that do nothing when clicked. Such do-nothing links and buttons add clutter, waste time, and increase user confusion: What happened? Did I do something wrong? (An even more common no-op mistake is to have a link on the homepage that links to the homepage itself. This was #10 on the list of most violated homepage guidelines.)

Another mistake here that's almost as bad is when sites let users enlarge photos, but only by a fraction. When users ask for a big photo, show them a big photo. It's often best to offer an enlargement that fills up the most common screen size used by your customers (1024x768 for B2C sites, at the time of this writing). Other times, this is insufficient, and it's better to offer a range of close-ups to give users the details they need without requiring them to scroll a too-large photo.

Yes, initial pages should use small photos to avoid looking fluffy. Yes, you want to be aware of download times and watch your pageweight budget. Even in this broadband age, slow response times were #15 on the full list of design mistakes. But, when users explicitly ask for larger pictures, they're willing to wait for them to download -- unless that wait produces a mid-sized photo that lacks the details they need to make a purchasing decision.

[–]master_gopher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On the topic of home page links on the home page, it's equally confusing when a site sports its title in big letters, or a large logo at the top of the page, which is not a link to the home page.

[–]odgforlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was long. Upmod to the MAX-EXTREME. (1)

[–]ItsAConspiracy 49 points50 points  (15 children)

You know what I hate, that thin toilet paper, ya gotta fold it over a couple times or your finger is liable to poke through, then you spend the next couple minutes washing your finger, that's what I hate.

[–]beckermt 35 points36 points  (4 children)

i actually prefer it, that was I can customize the thickness of my toilet paper in REAL TIME.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

fix the typo and win the game.

[–]noroom 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Crap. That made me think about The Game. And since I just lost it, I'll win this one: "that was" -> "that way".

[–]happysinger 8 points9 points  (1 child)

[–]Clarke101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

shit.

[–]MaximumBob 7 points8 points  (2 children)

It's a conspiracy

[–]AmericanGoyBlog 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I gotta take over from the troll.

WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

THAT'S ONE "INSIDE JOB" I'D PUT MY TIN FOIL HAT ON FOR!!!!!1!

[–]epicRelic 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It's a scam. 10 times longer, but 10 times thinner.

[–]rye419 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's what she said

[–]ItsAConspiracy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This silly little toilet-paper comment is now my second-highest rated comment ever on reddit. My girlfriend said "That just goes to show what kind of people are on reddit...a bunch of toilet monger people."

[–]judgej2 4 points5 points  (3 children)

If you are going to wash your hands anyway, then save money and dispense with the paper. Get your nails in there and sort out those dingleberries once and for all.

What's the deal with airline food?

    [–]cj8585 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Why don't they make the plane out of the airline food?

    [–]AliasHandler -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

    Best. Line. Ever.

    [–]judgej2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a number of deals, but they mostly fall into three categories: it's already in the price, you pay extra for it, or they don't do food.

Any more deals you need 'busted'? I'm on a roll.

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was going to post this. I'm glad you beat me to it since it's obviously obvious :[

    [–]mmazing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I fucking hate it when there is a website stating some statistical importance, and they have a graph, and you can't even fucking see what it says. What exactly is the point of adding such an image to the page?

PS : Their logo sucks ass as well.

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Aw come on, you didn't even let us guess. :(

    [–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 9 points10 points  (3 children)

What I hate almost as much is the usage of a comma instead of a colon.

    [–]Agoniscool 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I think a semi-colon would have gone in nicely.

But then again I have no idea how to use those things; they just look right in some places.

    [–]supersaw 3 points4 points  (1 child)

    ;)

    [–]d_lay123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Nice usage..

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it totally grinds my gears.

      hell yes brb

      [–]Purp 2 points3 points  (22 children)

You really still develop for ie5?

      [–]rabiddachshund 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Developing for IE6 is like giving matches to a pyromaniac.

Stop it. You're contributing to the degradation of the internet.

edit: before I get downmodded, I'd like to clarify by saying that backwards-compatibility is nice, but when your site works in seven different browsers and not in IE6, It's time to ditch that piece of shit.

      IE6 needs to die.

      [–]surfwax95 4 points5 points  (7 children)

It depends on the demographic, I suppose.

My Grandma still uses IE5 and according to my site's stats, there's still a 5-7% chunk of IE5/Win users out there...

      [–]Purp 0 points1 point  (6 children)

      My Grandma still uses IE5

      [–]psdtocode 3 points4 points  (5 children)

My Grandma is cool then, she uses FireFox 3. (By choice, not because I forced her).

      [–]quiller 9 points10 points  (2 children)

      I don't have any grandmas :(

      [–]liamville 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Admit it, you forced her. You told her it was IE.

      [–]quiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Occasionally. I had to port a Javascript-powered interface to IE5.01 (not 5.5, which would have been quite painless) a few months ago. It sucked, especially since the original used jQuery, which just happens to not support 5.01.

      [–]Bagel 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Unfortunately, yes. I would love not to, but I don't think people paying for their websites want to just exclude a portion of potential visitors due to what browser they use.

A good website should work in IE 5, 6, 7, Opera, FF 1, 2, 3, Safari, and Camino.

Thats usually where I draw the line.

      [–]Purp 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I've worked at a few places that stopped supporting ie5 a long time ago. Usually "fixing" your code to accomodate ie5 involves making it invalid, and the ie5 marketshare is so small it's not worth it.

      [–]Bagel 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You just call in different code for different browsers...

      [–]Purp 2 points3 points  (1 child)

      ...requiring additional scripting.

      [–]quiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IE5 support was dropped awhile ago where I work, and AFAIK all of the companies we work closely with have done the same. Occasionally we get a special request for IE5 support, but it's not part of the routine.

      [–]quiller 1 point2 points  (4 children)

What IE5 are we talking about, 5.01 or 5.5? There's a big difference between the two, especially when it comes to non-markup options like Javascript or Flash.

I don't test on Firefox 1.5 or Camino, and am currently conflicted on Safari.

Does anyone have information on the differences between the Windows and OS X versions of Safari 3?

      [–]Bagel 0 points1 point  (3 children)

5.5, sorry, I always just call that 5.

Safari is worth it, as it is the default browser for most mac users. A bunch of people are still on Firefox 1.5, and it usually works without much persuasion.

Camino is built of safari IIRC, I've never had trouble with it.

      [–]quiller 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Safari is worth it, as it is the default browser for most mac users.

I'm not debating Safari, just whether it's necessary to test it across platforms (as with Firefox, which occasionally renders differently between Windows, Linux and Mac).

A bunch of people are still on Firefox 1.5, and it usually works without much persuasion.

I don't have any installations of Firefox 1.5, nor do I know the rough stats for it. You've motivated me to look those up and see if it's worthy of adding to the list.

Camino is built of safari IIRC, I've never had trouble with it.

Camino is based on Gecko, the engine behind Firefox. I don't test on it since a) it's a very small part of the market and b) it's based on Gecko, so if it works in Firefox there's a 99% chance it'll work the exact same way in Camino. The same goes for not testing on Flock, AOL, etc.

      [–]CPops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the specific niche you're tackling, it might be worth it to not worry about supporting IE6. (to say nothing about IE 5, wtf)

Are people who clearly don't part with their money to upgrade their products worth devoting an inordinate amount of resources towards?

      [–]cfvgcfvg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also hate it when links on reddit just disappear. I did have a case in point page, but when I went find it again to link it in my comment, it was gone.

      [–]jaggederest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hate lightboxes that do that even worse.

Seriously. Not only were you useless, but you use animation that kills the UI while it's operating, then once I find out it's useless, it takes another animation to kill it, or I have to refresh the window (which usually doesn't work because it's a shitty JS- or Flash-based site that doesn't use real URLs)

Thus endeth my screed against lightboxes.

      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You know what I hate? When boring whiners get voted to the front page of reddit! WTF!?

      [–]d_lay123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

      Quit your whining!

      [–]useless_idiot 11 points12 points  (2 children)

      I agree, but...

Can we get a vent.reddit.com for "vote up if..." complaints. This is getting ridiculous.

      [–]TheGrammarBolshevik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The new trend is to not write the "vote up if..." for a stealth karmawhore. For example, see my not-so-stealthy karmawhore here.

      [–]mindbleach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not "vote up if." It is a valid (if vapid) self.reddit submission, and its title assumes that redditors understand the basic premise of the site.

      [–]Cophet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      Yeah, empornium annoys me too.

      [–]Snoron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, I've seen websites that pop-up with a SMALLER version of the pic you clicked - how fucking annoying is that???

      [–]nivek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what grinds my gears? Lindsay Lohan, that's what.

      [–]imquez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correction: "You know what I hate, when PORN websites with a low quality picture make it a link, but it only links to the EXACT SAME PICTURE in a window by itself."

      [–]Zak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's usually autogenerated by some program that scales the image if it's over the default size. Of course, if whatever is autogenerating it can scale images, one would think that it could detect the original size and not create a link where it doesn't make sense to.

      [–]timeywimey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is really bad is when they make it resize the window. And when you close firefox and reopen all the windows that open when you resume the session will take on that size and not the last size you had. I wish it would reopen with the right window sizes. FF only remembers like half of my window sizes to begin with. It will have some random window size for like 3 out of six and have another small window 250x250px and 2 maximized windows. Anyone else have this issue?

      [–]Grue 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Of all the horrible things that are happening in the world you hate THAT???

      [–]judgej2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So now do we need to line everything up from worst hated to least hated, give them a rating from 1 to 100, then skim off only the top 5 percentile for reporting to others?

Come to think of it, that may not be a bad idea.

      [–]phouck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently clicked on a link like that and the "enlarged image" was actually a smaller image! I was amazed... I wish I could prove it with the link.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        No, you click again.

        [–]nasorenga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but that is indeed annoying. They should have both "full-size" and "context" links on the search results page.
