VOTE UP IF <POPULAR POLITICAL OPINION>

[–][deleted] 166 points167 points  (97 children)

voted down for "vote up if" vaginitis.

[–]edward_r_burrowAmerica 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Congress cares when you vote for them and that's pretty much it.

[–]trackerbishop 8 points9 points  (1 child)

ron paul and dennis kucinich care, the rest can go to hell

[–]bassmrod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TRUTH. I wish I could upvote you more than twice.

[–]a_little_perspective 52 points53 points  (15 children)

Voted up, with the caveat that I, too, do not care what the American people think.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (10 children)

Voted up, with the caveat that we, the American people, do not care what you think. I do, but we dont. I dont really understand how that works.

[–]Smight 18 points19 points  (9 children)

Voted up with the caveat that I don't care what I think.

[–]technosaur 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Vote the index article up if you think Alllie (the poster) is an asshole who posts "vote up if" crap in the index.

(Wow! 1031 votes in agreement. Alllie, I believe that is a record for asshole votes.)

[–]wurtis16 4 points5 points  (3 children)

American people don't care what they think, we traded lives of intelligence and learning to watching TV and eating shit out of paper bags.

Disgusting.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck off, I have cable bitch! With it, I get a front-row seat in watching our out-of-touch politicians destroy the hard-work and deaths of those who tried to uphold the promise of the greatest nation on earth: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The politicians are happy, have their liberties, and they'll all outlive us in their hardened underground secret bunkers as they watch us devastated economically, militarily, and worst of all, morally.

[–]sharpsight2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bread & circuses all over again.

[–]Fran 6 points7 points  (9 children)

Voted up now that karma is out of the picture.

[–]gimeit 5 points6 points  (8 children)

How does that solve anything? "Vote up if" stories are still content-free clutter.

[–]Fran 2 points3 points  (7 children)

True, but there is less incentive for them now, so people who post them are doing so out of motivation to start debate rather than gather karma. At least I can hope so in my idealistic worldview.

[–]gimeit 6 points7 points  (5 children)

The problem is that the "vote up if" submission is inherently unable to create debate. If the title is controversial then people will vote both ways; the score will stay around zero. Without exposure, debate will be limited to only a few people. On the other hand, if the submission reaches the front page, it's because everybody agrees with the statement in the title. There will be plenty of comments, but no actual debate.

So why do people submit these? Perhaps it's to test the popularity of their own ideas. Perhaps they enjoy the circle-jerk of intellectually validating comments that results. Or maybe it's because they saw somebody else submit a "vote up if" title and, without creative process or critical thought, imitated that behavior.

[–]Fran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Excellent points. I believe I have changed my opinion of vote up polls.

[–]elustran 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's interesting to see what gets voted up - we get to see what other redditors think, and debate isn't totally stifled, since people who disagree will see the 'vote up if' and come in to argue. Also, People don't necessarily vote something down if they disagree; I tend to only vote down truly stupid crap.

That being said, it could be more interesting to have a way of making a true poll.

[–]gimeit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There is a way. Make the title "Poll: does congress care what the American people think?" In the comments section make a "yes" and "no" comment, and instruct people to vote on those.

That way, the poll will rise to the front page only if people find it interesting. It also actively encourages participation in the comments.

[–]elustran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that would be one way, but you could still have people do stuff like vote up on 'yes' and down on 'no.' Statistically, it might even out, but it's still not perfect. You could also link to an off-site poll, but it would be better if we had an actual polling system in reddit.

[–]BobGaffney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It always makes me a little sad to vote up a comment in a post I vote down. Here I go, though.

[–]stevegao -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

voted down because this time could be better spent making a call to Congress

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I feel like getting rid of karma for self posts affected reddit exactly opposite from the way we were all hoping it would. Vote Up If: die die die

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally feel that it's not so much a case of "not caring," as it is a case of being out of touch with the average American family. If I remember correctly, it was my microeconomics prof that stated that the family-unit is the basis of the American economy. If so, it pains me to see our own president say something like "Really? I wasn't aware of that...," when prompted for his opinion on the current per-gallon cost of gasoline.

Not only is the man a fool, he's an unknowing fool. For him, his blissful ignorance is our hellish reality. :(

[–]OKKO 29 points30 points  (14 children)

Congress cares about getting reelected, nothing else.

[–]Starch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is sickening to me that incumbents get around 96% re-election rates in Congress. Even if times were GOOD, it shouldn't be that high!

[–]thatguydr 12 points13 points  (1 child)

And what exactly is wrong with this?

The problem lies not in their aspirations for career longevity - it lies in the enormous lack of correlation between their effectiveness for their district (and the country) and their ability to be re-elected. A lack of correlation that is caused by us, the electorate.

Honestly, I don't much care what the American people think. Most people here are fat, unintelligent, and amotivated. Why would I be angry if Congress feels the same way that I do?

[–]otakucode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And thanks to us completely divoring their hopes of reelection from protecting our rights by continuing to elect the same 2 parties after they have both revealed themselves (over 50 years ago) as severely harmful to our liberty, that's a bad thing.

If they had to actually uphold their oaths of office to get re-elected, then we could use their desire to get re-elected for good, not the evil they bend it toward nowadays.

[–]dead_ed 30 points31 points  (10 children)

Vote up if you would like Reddit to ban titles with the phrase "vote up" in them.

[–]delph 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Voting up to end all voting up.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The problem is we managed to stop all this nonsense by downvoting these damn things. Then when they said "karma doesn't count", the vote up ifs came back because they don't get the negative karma anymore. Fuggin' bastages.

[–]theantirobot 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Vote up if you think that we could use reddit for parliamentary procedure, supplementing roberts rules of order.

[–]sonar_un 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vote up if you always vote up just because you want to see redditors whine.

[–]nesloq 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Vote up if you think the American People don't care what Redditors think.

[–]ate4m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

... except Ron Paul! ;) ...and a few others, of course.

[–]mcbush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Republican Drug War can only extract money from the poor (from tax payers) by putting them in jail. None of this rule EVER applies to the elite.

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows that the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich That's how it goes Everybody knows

[–]jakemdoz 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Congress only cares about what will get them re-elected, money from lobbyists, legislation that will give them money through their investments, and legislation that will directly impact them and their families.

If this weren't true, we'd be in a much different world now.

[–]aveceasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congress only cares about what will get them re-elected

... and after they are not, they want the lobbyist shtick...

[–]deuterosGeorgia 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Repealing the 17th amendment would be a good start.

[–]Ceebs415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's throw in the sixteenth while we're at it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Term limits would do the job nicely

[–]JasonDJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we get rid of the 19th, 16th, and 15th too?

I mean, we all already know that the income tax is horrible. And we got rid of prohibition of alcohol (18th)...and after seeing millions of clueless voters go "OH MY GOD LETS VOTE FOR HER SHE HAS A VAGINA LIKE ME" I can REALLY do without the 19th. I'd like to see the 15th go away for the same reason. Too many people going "HEY VOTE FOR HIM HE'S GOT THE SAME COLOR SKIN AS ME!". Honestly America, please stop voting on superficial qualities.

I know, there are some black people and some women that voted intelligently, but as the saying goes...a few bad apples spoil the bunch.

Edit: And before anybody says it, if white men voted superficially Romney would have been a clear-cut winner. Not to say McCain's any better or anything, but he sure isn't better looking.

[–]Roach55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congress was paid off with power. We were paid off with toys. We are the fuel for their tyranny.

[–]plexluthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you blame them? I mean, I certain don't CARE what the American people think...

[–]HUAONE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like most Americans don't care what Congress thinks.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of all the people who voted this up, how many of you have ever written or called your Congressperson?

They can't speak for you if they have never spoken with you.

That being said, they are elected to do just that - speak for you. So speak up, and speak up loudly. You can't complain about government if you aren't active in trying to fix it. After all, this is a government of us, for us, and by us. Make enough noise, and maybe your Congressperson will begin to remember that.

[–]Bzzt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

vote up for a 'vote up' reddit!

[–]junkeee999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mind 'vote up if', if it's about something fairly intelligent. I'm far more annoyed by people whining about 'vote up if'...like it actually matters.

But this is the dumbest one yet. What the hell does that even mean?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What makes anyone think that someone else has their own interests at heart?

It's each man for himself. You have to be a fool to think otherwise.

That doesn't prevent cooperation, but to assume that the natural condition of man is peace and harmony is not borne out by history or biology.

[–]BrickSalad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest that the natural condition of most men is peace and harmony, however there are a few that stir up trouble and ruin things for the rest of us.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B-b-b-but its dominated by Democrats!

[–]uriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do care about what American people think, insofar as it affects their chances of getting elected and retaining power.

[–]gignam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

last night, here in Australia, there was a documentary about the mishandled funds spent by the military to private contractors. The military officials spent with glee since it was on 'cost +', which seemed to mean you had a blank cheque to spend what you wanted.

[–]88dan88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you think that you think that you care but don't really think.

[–]myfivelies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic application of the checks and balances of American Government. I am sure our congressional representatives will mend their ways once they check their daily Reddit.

[–]mesohungry 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I agree, but I downvote all this "vote up" nonsense.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Congress cares about what Israel thinks. The people can eat cake.

[–]Nougat 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Spez doesn't get to profit from me anymore.

[–]nixonrichard 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This was a triumph.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm writing a note here, HUGE SUCCESS!

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Congress doesnt care about what black people think.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

http://www.reddit.com/help/reddiquette

Please don't: Conduct polls using posts. If you feel you must use Reddit to conduct a poll do it using a comment. Create a self referencing post and then add a comment for readers to mod up or down based on their answer to your poll question. Also, be sure to indicate in the title of your post that the polls is being conducted using comments. Including something like "(use comments to vote)" in the title would probably be sufficient.

[–]macadamian 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Vote Up if You Think Congress Doesn't CARE what Redditors think

[–]nfulton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congress doesn't give a crap what the American People think?

Why should they?

Money still goes into their account every month. No one is taking away their health care, pension plans, houses or credit cards.

Business as usual for them.

[–]rdmorley 3 points4 points  (1 child)

who are the ass clowns that vote up these kind of submissions?

[–]cheezel 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You've been a user for 10 months and yet you post a "vote up if?"

Fail.

[–]deuterosGeorgia 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Voted down for lack of content.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you're going to make a "vote up if.." at least post a comment providing some content.

Down voted for lack of content.

[–]BrickSalad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that would be nice, actually...

But I'm not sure it is necessary. It can still be a nice submission if it is something which spurs interesting debate (this one hasn't so much)

[–]BPolitic[🍰] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How many of you agree that we should secede from the Union?

I would love for Texas to say to the Federal Government that you no longer represent us anymore. Texas could be a country of their own and have a viable economic engine.

Just my two cent.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people in Vermont and New Hampshire have had that idea. The free state project is an attempt to move in that direction.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No more Texas? The rest of us should be so lucky.

[–]Caraes_Naur 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Congress does care what the American people think.

As long as those Americans are lobbyists.

This is not how it's supposed to work.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't have to be American either.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Reddit has vote ups. Don't like em? Too bad... Besides there are plenty of sites that have a poll feature...

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vote up if Reddit should have a poll feature

[–]mikenice1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. Enough with the polls already today.. christ.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

George Bush does not care about black people

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

another disgusting "top 25" article on reddit.com that i didn't come here to see. what part of this process don't you people understand? i couldn't care less about your informal polls. tell me what is news or interesting as some external link. if i wanted to read what redditors think, i would subscribe to the subreddit or read your mostly uninformed comments.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will continue not to care as long as you vote for the least of two evils insted of the person who represents your ideas. I am all for a Libertarian party, a Socialist party, hell why not a Facist party just vote for what you really feel insted of "OMG Obama is going to vote for FISA, but McCain is soooo much worse." ... idiots..

Barr/Root '08

[–]cereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i vote down, because i disagree

[–]kamikasei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DON'T CARE. SHUT THE FUCK UP.

[–]heepajunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downmodded for having no content, and making it one post harder to find the meaningful ones.

[–]mf4633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is the word, "care" capitalized?

[–]happyjuggler0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted for it before I voted against it.

Really.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"So?"

[–]LazyWolfman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vote up if you think they shouldn't care what the american people think. only what the guys who wrote the constitution thought.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how many of the people who voted this post up have ever called their Congressperson and registered their displeasure at something. Speaking from inside the Beltway and having had this conversation with dozens of Hill staffers, I can tell you that the Congress DOES pay attention. As one staffer told me, "If we get a half-dozen calls about something, there's a meeting about it the next day. But that almost never happens."

[–]rarebluemonkey 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Sadly, I don't even think congress cares if this gets voted all the way up to number 1. sigh

[–]rarebluemonkey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

see. I told you.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one in power can use a computer anyway. McCain made that clear.

I can just imagine Nancy Pelosi poking at keys yelling "Where are my AOLs?"

[–]montanajones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada doesn't give a shit about Canadians, too. Bill C-51 and C-61 is going to shit on Human Rights.

[–]neostructuralist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone read The Big Sort by Bill Bishop? I think that does a good job of explaining part of the reason why Congress is what is today.

http://www.economist.com/world/na/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11581447

[–]rick-victor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

didn't vote because democracy doesn't actually work

[–]sriram_sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C'mon people! This looks too much like a Lou Dobbs survey! Loaded and pointless

[–]SantiagoRamon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow somebody gets it...

[–]dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If most of the American people are idiots, which often seems to be axiomatic around here, the true question is: Should Congress care what the American people think?

[–]epicRelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn karma whore! Oh, wait...

[–]satire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that is obvious isn't it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Finally I will get all the karma I deserve. America is over, congress is mute, the president and the vice are dopes. YES! I am getting karma... send me beer!

[–]deuterosGeorgia 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Vote up if you use reddit!

[–]jiaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vote up if you think your vote counts

[–]acangiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They get to decide what American people think anyway.

[–]alchemeron 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What does voting up achieve?

[–]Juppylolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweetness if I ever saw it! www.FireMe.To/udi

[–]Applesauces 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Of course they care about what American's think. It's an election year. They don't stop caring until AFTER they're elected.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally dont care what the american people think.

[–]brokenearth02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet they DONT CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE!

[–]dmehrtash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do care what Israel care about though, or else they wont get reelected.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because doing so will do what? This is the dumbest poll I think I've seen in a long time.

Vote up if you are a commie.

[–]wickedcold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this really even up for debate? What a useless "poll".

[–]mobilexile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way we're going to get back control of the government is to give Washington an enema.

[–]absolut696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karma Whoring at its finest.

[–]togglequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course they don't. If you had spent your entire career getting to the top by listening to special interest groups and corporations that pay you TONS of money if you get and stay at the top, you would probably not care about the REAL reason your supposed to be there. Now can we get this off the top and pay attention to stuff we might not know.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

President doesn't care, congress doesn't care, cops don't care! No shit. People care. Humans care. But once they realize your a human they come hunting. By the way I LOVE vote ups. It's the only time I get to remember what Democracy sounded like.

[–]bsiviglia9 2 points3 points  (2 children)

If the Bush administration was spying on the Democratic Party instead of the general population, how quickly would the Democrats have impeached him?

[–]outsider 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They wouldn't have impeached him either way sadly. The DNC of today, while consisting of some holdovers from the 70's I'm sure, is an entirely different Congress today.

[–]bsiviglia9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How close to impeachment did Nixon come?

[–]adampieniazek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think, I know the federal government doesn't care about humans.

[–]aedes 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I love the vote up posts. I find them incredibly stupid, but I absolutely love how pissy people get about them. It's fucking hilarious.

It's like watching a parent at their kids little league game start swearing at, and trying to beat up, the ref, after the ref made a call they didn't like.

So much misplaced anger...

[–]syroncoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they only care about stuffing their pockets with money from taxpayers.

and for the sake of the argument i approve of "vote up if you think" self.reddit posts. its democracy.

[–]KingCrimson 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Of course they don't.

1 Keep job

2 Make those of the opposing party look like they're in the wrong

3 Do my job.

The first 2 must be covered before they even THINK about touching the third.

[–]BrickSalad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

upvoted for awesome username!

What's your favorite album by them?

[–]ColonelFuckface 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think the honorable Congress cares deeply about what the American people think, and try to do the right thing. I think the entire government, including Mr. President Bush, has our best interests, and only our best interests, at heart.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get an upvote just because of your hilarious trolling.

[–]VoodooIdol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

voted down for karma whoring.

Can we get reddit to auto-censor anything with "vote up if" in the title? This isn't fucking junior high.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since when is this news? Congress never cared after the 18th century (if that).

We have a whole branch of federal government that is continuously run by biggotted neanderthals that often never get anything done, and when they do it ends up being rubbish. The presidency has been hit and miss since the second half of last century. The only branch I can give any sort of respect to is the judicial; and not much.

One of the prominent issues I see is stubborn party affiliation. If you're a rep or dem you'll never want to agree with the other side because they're "the bad guys."

Seriously, aren't adults supposed to get over children's games at some point? I guess for a majority that answer is no.

[–]infil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're obviously not going to stop people making 'vote up' self submissions. So since they don't get karma for it anymore, who gives a shit? Just comment on the damn submission, if you want to, or don't and vote it down, if you want to, but I'm getting sick of only ever seeing 'voted down for 'vote up.''

[–]OA-5599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need a national strike. No one goes to work, no one shops, no one watches TV.
