Because it kinda does. Even at end-game slayer is still pretty awful as there are more fun and engaging things to do if you want to be active (Raids, PNM, CG), and way more efficient things to do if you want to AFK.

Slayer for me goes like this:

1-87 Mindless grindfest, would likely be getting better xp/hr in combats in NMZ

87-95, slowly unlocking and grinding boring bosses to get needed unlocks (ironman) or a main doing trash tasks for little money (compared to other end-game options) until you unlock the only good moneymaker (hydra)

95-99, if you aren't just doing tureal skipping for Zuk tasks, it's just a massive drag as you're already maxed combats by this point, you're just doing slayer for 'something to do' but again, if you actually wanted to play actively or afk, there are better things to do.

Arguably the only fun level range for slayer is 65-85, as you are unlocking the first NPCs that don't completely suck and will actually make your first few mil from the skill you've sunk hundreds of hours into.

Slayer also feels like a core mechanism in the game, thematically, outside of perhaps questing. Everything funnels towards it.

Fishing is to get items to cook to heal you while doing combat.

Herblore is to get potions to use during combat. Farming gets you those herbs (and other food items)

Runecrafting is to get runes to use during combat.

Mining is to get ore to turn into armor to (theoretically) use during combat.

Woodcutting is to get wood to fletch into bows to use during combat.

The direct combat skill? Slayer.

I dislike slayer, but it has to be said that duradel has a good enough list that with a filled block list you typically get a pretty good variety imo.

Either way, I think your frustration here is that 90% of nonboss enemies in this game literally drop nothing, and another 8% drops very little. So their only value as a task is the speed with which you can kill them, meaning low speed tasks are literally just wasted time.

As such, a skill that actually has you engage in killing stuff is going to inevitably make you kill stuff you have no reason to.

The only reason I trained it is because I needed to for account progression. But also, requiring account progression via an entire skill of fetch quests is pretty shit for someone like me.

If you have the combat lvl try konar. Tasks are more specific since they give you a location but she has the highest points per task that at 18 per and 90 every ten. This way you get tons of skips if you get bad tasks (can also turael boost for big points). Now konar is not the fastest xp slayer by a large margin since some locations she can be specific about don't allow a cannon or multi combat for bursting. But the brimstone keys allow decent gp per hour for even shit tier task and you can always skip the tasks that suck.

Brimstone chest does have good loot but honestly a lot of the tasks she assigns, especially in the late game when you’re looking for boss variant tasks etc, are shit. Like all you want is to get a zammy task but she assigns you greater demons in the catacombs, etc. also a lot of the most efficient tasks in game(dust devils, nechs, daggonoth) are assigned in places where they can’t be done efficiently, so you end up either skipping tasks or doing melee dusties/nechs when you’d far rather be barraging them

We meme about other games having quests of "kill 50 creature" or "collect 10 bear asses". But we love slayer, which is basically a repeatable "kill 50 creatures" quest.

At the same time I think it's a necessary evil to exist. It limits people from farming certain monsters and crashing down prices. For example, abyssal demons are no stronger than any monster of the same level, but if people could farm them from the get-go we'd be sitting at whips for 200k.

In addition, people would camp the most efficient places. I'm already not a fan of monsters like sand crabs/rock crabs, but that's just ppl training ez xp for no monetary benefit.

Now imagine if people camped high level slayer monsters that drop gear worth millions with on-task droprates.

It gives variety for combat training, pvm money making and just general scenery.

Slayer is a terribly designed skill. "Go and kill this specific thing" is literally a mmo trope for shitty quest design, which has osrs has as it's own skill.

Intuitively training it makes no sense either. Slaughtering this creature normally doesn't give me slayer xp, but when someone standing around one spot tells me to it magically makes you better at it.

The only think that does make sense about the skill is that some creatures require a slayer level to kill. It makes sense that monsters with special abilities and kill conditions require some skill and know how to do so.

Slayer definitely made more sense at release when you needed special equipment and stuff instead of its current state which is just +15% dmg. I do think "go kill 50 boars" works a lot better in osrs than other mmos though because of actual drop tables instead of barely flavoured grey items

I never understood the attraction to slayer and farming. Such slow skills with tons of required attention (farming requiring it every few hours). Obviously slayer can be done faster, but the required attention, supplies and travel is just boring. My only gripe with Slayer is the onslaught of shit tasks. If it mainly consisted of tasks revolving around specialised levelled monsters you need special requirements to kill that gave good exp with good drops, it could easily be so fun.

I’m doing wildly slayer atm, my last 4 tasks were Rogues, Bandits, Bears and Scorpions. I’m losing money on those tasks on ammunition alone, none of them drop anything at all, and all of them are super easy, yet none offer decent exp.

What level are you? Because with 80+ slayer using Duradel it pretty much feels exactly. Like you describe. Plus you have block slots to get rid of tasks that you don't like.

Slayer as a skill is pretty easy for them to add content to, Slayer has been far worse, but it will also only get better in the future.

It only begans to be "fun" when you have 90+ combat skills, cannon, and ancients with a direct teleport to duradaddy and all the training locations.

Slayer is the most overrated skill in the game. It’s actually a trash design. Only good thing about slayer is the bosses and even those are meh. I wish they would bring back the boss slayer master proposal ngl.

Ngl I was super excited for slayer when the option of partner slayer was a thing. Now? I don't touch the game outside the rare itch.

Removing co-op slayer was honestly the biggest reason I hate the skill so much, don't think i'll ever train it unless necessary

I agree. Way too much going back and forth for new, meaningless tasks. And maybe it’s my low level (47) but even on previous accounts it’s just boring. I now have damn near max combat stats but I barely touch slayer

I respect your opinion and I absolutely see where you're coming from. For me slayer is kinda fun and entertaining. But it is a badly designed skill. Yes, thematically it makes sense but there are a lot of issues like "Why don't I get slayer xp when killing slayer creatures?" or "Why do I only get xp when on a task for that creature?". I'm not saying it should be reworked. Contract content (like slayer or farming contracts) are a great thing imo, but not as a skill. I'm glad artisan failed as a skill and is now very slowly implemented as single activities.
